Car won't shift into park - Broken Shifter Cable - Replacing a shifter cable - Trailblazer/Envoy

  • In this video I show you how I replaced the shifter cable on my 2003 Chevrolet Trailblazer. I will admit that I accidentally broke this shifter cable while trying to fix it. This is applicable to the Envoy, Bravada, Rainier, etc.
    My vehicle would not shift into park. I had to climb underneath and manually push the transmission shifter lever into park. I purchased a brand new shifter cable from rockauto.com. It cost me approximately $50. I definitely saved myself some money by doing the repair myself.

    Next time put it in neutral. Too dangerous leaving it in gear. But hopefully there isn't a next time.

      Excellent point. I'm embarrassed to admit that that didn't even cross my mind. Put it in neutral, and kill the engine. Thank you for helping me gain a firm grip of the obvious! I guess I like to live my life on the edge. LOL

    My wife was picking up or 5 year old from school today and she thought she was in Park but she really wasn't. Thankfully she unknowingly happened to keep her foot on the brake as he was getting in. This vehicle is somewhat easy to work on, then again they have all this unnecessary crap in the way and it's unsafe. Thanks for pinpointing the issue for me but why in the heck is that shifter soo exposed liked that and they bushings appear to only be made of nylon. Everytime I turn around I'm working on this thing. I'm not a mechanic or anything either. Thank God for UA-cam video tutorials.

    So I know this video was made some time ago, but I just did the exact same thing you did! Replacing the bushing and bent the cable too far (trying to get a better angle to push the bushing in). Snap! And now I have a sloppy - non waterproof cable that won’t shift properly. Ordered the same cable you did, and because I’ve installed a custom stereo previously I am well aware of the console removal process. Thank you so much for making this video, very helpful!!

    Great Video! Tying some high-strength string or fishing line to the end of the old cable as you pull it through the truck can help because you can tie the
    same string to the new cable for pulling it back through the carpet and tight spots.

    Thank you so much. You saved me so much work Watching you do it first . One thing I did that seem to help the Installation under the carpet was to cut the carpet a few inches where it emerges into the tunnel.
    That area is hidden so it does not hinder the cosmetics.
    Thanks again.

    Good video. Thank you for posting. I used a shoe string tied to shifter end and used that to pull the new cable back up. Also, my issue was the bushing that connects to the shifter, not on the transmission end underneath. I spent alot of time down there trying to figure out the problem, watching different videos, and was positive I knew the problem. A half hour problem turned into a 3 day event. (Had to wait on shipping)

    I saw the mileage on this vehicle. Mine was not quite that high. I have a 2008 and this happened at 144k. Mine broke as I was almost ready to place an order at a fast-food joint. Thankfully, the place was on an incline and I was in neutral. I glided to the end of the driveway and parked, The bad part was I had to walk home which was not down the street. Took mine to the shop and they fixed it. I will not tell you what I paid. It was less than what I was prepared to pay, though. Thank goodness I did not have to replace it. I feel bad that I had so much change in my console. Check wallet light is an understatement!!!! Since my vehicle is climbing up in years I think I need to get a new one. As a female without a driveway and no male friends where I live - getting a newer vehicle seems like the best option.

    Just replace my cable..07 Envoy. Dorman bushing kit is a waste of time unless it's an emergency repair. New $50 cable from Amazon is great. Fishing line trick was very helpful. Hard part was forcing the carpet threshold piece out without thinking it was going to break. White mark on inside connection goes toward pass side. Thanks for your video!

    Man! Great video, but I saw enough that I sure don’t want to attempt all that mechanical disassembly and reassembly myself! Before I watched your very informative video, I thought it may have been a relatively simple fix, but how wrong I was! Mine is an ‘02 Trailblazer LTZ. I love the truck (when the electricals are working properly)! I thought your term, “Failblazer” was funny, and kind of appropriate for the electrical snafus I’ve occasionally experienced in the 4+ years I’ve owned the truck. The odometer on mine just turned 180,000 miles. I noticed this happened on yours at 170,000. Now I’m wondering what else is about ready to fail. That 4.2 L straight six is a wonderful engine! Powerful, and runs like a sewing machine. Just wish they had mated it to some better electronics. May be about time for a replacement vehicle. Having mine towed to the shop today.

    New cable arrived yesterday from RockAuto. Had to shift it from under the vehicle all week to get to/from work. A real pain but gotta do what ya gotta do.

    • @duaneb55
      @duaneb55 4 роки тому +1

      Wound up just being the shifter end bushing broke apart allowing cable to disengage from the shifter. $12 for a set of new bushings from O'Reilly Auto and all better in much less time than would have taken to replace the whole cable assembly.
      Thanks again for the video.

    I just replaced mine holt crap what a nightmare. What do I do tho if when I put it on drive it feels like it’s all the way down in 1st gear. Then when I put it in park it feels like it’s in neutral but the car is actually in park. It’s like I’m two notches off. Maybe I installed it while it was in reverse and not park? It got stuck in park? Can anyone help? I had to actually disengage the bushing from the shifter in order to push it all the way up to park so I could get my key out.

    My trailblazer won't go into park, but I can shift it into drive or reverse. So the cable isn't broken?

    I drove to the grocery store put my car in park and left in running to keep my passenger cool. When I returned my car was still running like a champ but I couldn't get out of park. I pressed on my break(like you normally would)and my shifter moves freely but the car won't go into any gear. It's like there's no connection between the shifter and the transmission anymore. Is that a problem with the shifter cable or bushing? 2005 envoy. Hope you can kind of help thank you.

    Get you a soulder gun and go to harbor freight and get some plastic welding rods there like 3 bucks and weld them back together

    I had this same problem. Please don't crawl under the car while it's running in reverse! You should shut the car off and then push the linkage from underneath

    I just got an estimate to replace the cable - $850. For a bear, that's a pretty good rate of pay.

    Was the vehicle still turning on? This recently happened to me but my trailblazer won't turn on.

      No, when the car is not in park, it will not turn on. My truck was already running and it wouldn't go back into park. If I turned the vehicle off in that condition and tried to restart it, it wouldn't have started.

      @@TheDaninator thanks, now I'm looking for a mechanic to do it. My truck has been a pain in the butt the last couple months. A mechanic recently told me I need to get the engine replaced and it'd be 2 thousand something dollars 😤

    How do you get the safety lock off to move the shifter?

      On the right side of the interior console once you remove the console plastic there is a silver button. With the key in the on position and brake pedal applied push the button to unlock the shifter.

    I'm a 52 yr old disabled woman (Rheumatoid Arthritis) my Chevy Cavalier shifter Cable broke as I was sitting at bank drive thru window! Had to get it towed. Is there any way of using a zip tie or wire hanger to Geri rig it? I have no one to help me because I am literally broke.

    • @TheDaninator
      @TheDaninator  5 років тому

      It's hard to say without knowing where it broke, but yes, it's possible. Obviously it would be prone to breaking or coming loose over and over, but it could work in a pinch.

      I fixed my mother in laws with a zip tie but it was Pontiac sunfire. Should be same way though. Here was in a tight spot on top of motor/trans under the hood
