- A couple of weeks ago I got a new Vintage V100THB single cut guitar, that comes factory loaded with Wilkinson pickups.
Not anymore - it's now loaded with Seymour Duncan SH-1 '59.
While the Wilkinson pickups are generally great, punchy, and aggressive (yeah that's an Oxford comma - sorry not sorry), I was looking for something more vintage-y (no pun intended), yet still affordable.
The Seymour Duncan Vintage Blues Set, consisting of matched SH-1 '59 Model™ neck & bridge pickups seemed to fit the bill, so here we are!

Thank you... excellent vid really. The Duncans sound fantastic and have an immediate intimacy sounding genuinely vintage but I like the Wilkinsons too!!!! especially on the cleaner tones, great sounding little pickup, articulate and bright/biting.

Thank you for the kind comments :) Yeah, the Wilkinsons aren't half bad, the bridge has a monster bark for overdrive and has already found a home in another guitar. But I really wanted the vintage tone on this one, so the SD's are staying for now :)

The vintage blues set is killer. Super gentle, sound great with cleans, don't sound overwhelming next to a strat.
I've personally used these pickups...lemme tell ya..for a vintage pickup, these humbucker babies are hot AF...when the distortion kicks in, and you bend the high notes...OMG the guitar will scream!! oh and don't forget to add tasty vibratos for pleasure🤟🤟🤟 awesome pickups by Seymour Duncan!

Wilkinson pickups are brilliant and no need to change them. If you want to change the sound of your tone i would suggest to any newbies, learn how to use your amp, its the major factor in dialing in tone!!
Agreed on the quality on the Wilkinson pickups and learning how to use an amp, and what different speakers will do for you (or IR's if you're so inclined).
But if you're looking for a PAF-esque sound, a pair of 15k ohms, ceramic magnet hot pickups aren't going to cut it, no matter what you do with your amp... 😁
Agree and disagree. Agree: Just adjust your pickups height & set up your tonality by the amps (tubes, ss, digital, whatever. As long as good for you and your listeners dont have a problem of it, so it's great).
Disagree: i ever tried to ask my local builders to clone the jb, texas, etc, to get a materials, inductances, resistances, blabla, and it never get any closer to the real and genuine one). And what i found is: even with the same specs, same materials, every builders have their own characteristic and nuances. There's no good or bad, it's all about your preferences.
In the end is: try to explorates any kind of the options and budget you have. You wont be jimmy page if you are not jimmy page.
I’d say leave the Wilkinson on that guitar, it seems to sound better on it.
Now, if you happen to have a Gibson SG, o would put them 59’s on it, just my 2cents..
Stock pups have scratchy highs, like most stock pups.
Duncans are classics for a reason!

While WIlkinsons are perfectly okay especially pricewise, I swear Duncan SH-1 is the best pickup I've ever heard in the neck position of my LP.. Considering buying one for the bridge as well. Btw, Vintage guitars are awesome!
This Wilkinson bridge barks like mad, I found a place for it in another guitar, but these Duncans match really well with this guitar - me likey lots. 😁
I have a samick Les Paul it is a monster with a 59 neck and sh4 in the bridge

The pinch harmonics on the SH four for ZZ Top it’s right up there with pearly gates I think pretty close
5:33 wilkinson neck pickup is awesome under gain. Duncans are brighter and have better clean tone.

Did not expect Wilkinson pickups or a Vintage guitar, was just looking for some samples of the SD pickups, and always liked Wilkinson products for their bang for the buck.

But the Duncan's had way more body and sound and not to shrill and dead sounding
Interesting I have a Vintage V100 the model that Gibson sued Vintage over, it's hard to really hear the difference , considering the price difference you would expect the SD to blow the Wilkinson's out of the park they didn't in fact in some sound examples the Wilkinson actually sounded better, I am looking to upgrade my V100 if I have to pay £300 quid for a set a Humbuckers they better blow me away, this is was a useful review for me, I can't tell you if it was worth because we all looking for that specific tone for our needs, but right now Wilkinson Double Coil Alinco 5 is winning , so far, my sound quest continues
Thank you for the comment! Couple of things though:
- the Wilkinson's on my V100 were high output ceramics, which are certainly amazing for heavier tones and have found their home in another guitar. Definitely not throwaways, or just covers for the pickup holes 😁
- these SD cost me something like £150, so I found them worth a punt - and ended up really enjoying the lower output, Alnico V smoothness, which sound closer to what I had in my head for this guitar. As you well say, we're all looking for something specific, and so far I've found it in this set 😃
... that said, I'm also rather curious to get my hands on some ToneRider pickups... 🤔 😉
@@PedalPlatform I am looking to upgrade my V100 in the future it was the V100 series that Gibson was not too happy about, and after Vintage had to do some changes, I paid just £160 quid for this guitar hardly been played considering it's the closet thing to a real Gibson I'm not selling it, so I am going on a quest to find that set, still like a PAF , yes Tonerider Iron Gear, but then there is the boutique makers Bare Knuckle, Monty's etc, I let my ears do the work, the quest for that sound

Yeah, yours are probably more vintage voiced than mine were... they were metal monsters :) As I said, fun for some things, but not what I wanted for this guitar 😁

You're not going nuts, they are more focused 😁 Ceramic magnets, higher output, more mid focused. On the other hand, darker and smaller dynamic range. I prefer the SD's on this guitar, but I also like the Wilkinsons a lot, so they have been transplanted to another guitar 😁
@@PedalPlatform Yes, I Love Duncans too. Each pick up is different , and with different output, and different amps with lower wattage, and or higher gain, there is a Duncan for you. I am starting to sound like a promotional ad for SD. I love the Antiquities, Seth Lovers, and the 59s in my Les Pauls. I just slapped a set of the 59s in my Heritage H 150 CM Guitar. Incredible tone
The 59’s are definitely more musical.

I'm genuinely confused. I grew up with a guy who played a 'vintage' les paul. I had an epiphone. We both agreed mine sounded and played better. That was 20 years ago. The sound that came out of a stock 'vintage' today just woke Seymour and Duncan up! I'd like to know about the longevity of those pickups. My epi lasted 12 years before the crackle cancer wrote her off. That's the difference I guess between higher quality electrical parts. Little difference in the beginning but in 30 years I'm guessing the seymour duncan set will be doing what they did as new. Its why I'm here. Rebuilding my first love, wanting the best, but yeah, wow, genuinely thrown off by this.
While I obviously can't comment on the longevity of the Wilkinson pickups, they don't feel flimsy built in any way. They feel nice and solid, and yeah - if you want to push the amp, they'll do the trick. :) I have moved the bridge pickup to another guitar that I use for the heavier stuff, but for this Vintage I wanted the more 'vintage' sounding pickups - and almost 6 months in, I still love them!
I hear just a touch less high end on the Duncans vs the Wilkinsons when played clean but somehow more when distorted. Not sure why that is 🤔
Might be the higher output of the Wilkinsons pushing the amp more than the SD's, and compressing the high end. Either that or UA-cam just doing what UA-cam does to the sound. 😆

Both sound great, however The Wilkinsons are superior. Reason being they're a bit more muscular, and slightly more open sounding. This adds to their Dynamic and volume possibilities, they're just more touch sensitive. The Duncans sounds smaller and also have a smaller range of tonal and volume Dynamic possibilities. The Wilkinsons sound like a bad boy in the principal's office, and the Duncans sounds like a polite teacher's assistant.
I like your analogy 😂 When playing them, the feeling is almost the opposite: the Duncan's open up lots of possibilities, and the Wilkinson's just want to go full on, all the time. I really like them, but I prefer them in another guitar. 😉
can you wire up phase switches to these pickups
I'm not a wiring specialist, so please check with one, but I think you can only do that if you get the 4 conductor wire version. Mine are the single conductor + braid, which I believe should always be wired with braid to ground.
Question. I grabbed an SH1B from my local shop and I am confused. The adjustable pole pieces would be along the top of the pickup. This is a bridge pickup..shouldn't they be along the bottom? The prints on the back of the pickup (the seymour duncan designed etc) would be upside down if installed with the pieces closest to the bridge...I that normal? I dunno...🤔

Up.cthe adjustable pieces are along the top when wire is down. It IS labeled SH1B so THAT IS the bridge one...SO odd.
To My ears the W's sound brittle overall, the SD's are more chimey and dynamic

I like the Wilkinson more.
They sound more musical and round, the Duncan's sound too precise and therefore somehow sterile and flat without depth.
Find on all demos the SD to trebbly sounding and to crisp/sharp/spiky... But if you and/or your guitar needs lots of treble- the Duncans are for you.

Thank you! And yes, the Duncans have a lot more treble than most high gain humbuckers, but I do like the flexibility I get from them. I purposefully didn't do any changes in the signal chain between both pickup sets so I could compare apples to apples, but in reality they work better with different settings, and I'm still using them on this guitar. But don't worry, the Wilkinson were also put to good (great 😁) use in another guitar 😉
I got a sh-1n for my prs se 24 but for the life of me can't figure out how to wire in. I know it shouldn't be that complicated but when I wire and ground to tone I'm getting no output
Sounds like something is shorting somewhere... have you checked the wiring diagrams on the Seymour Duncan website?
+++hhhmmmm i expected a bigger difference++ + i´d love to say that seymour duncan is the clear winner, but i struggle++ volume at 7 at wilkinson would make the gap eavan smaller i guess++
I believe the old UA-cam audio compression plays as part in this, as does not being able to convey the feeling of playing them. The SDs feel more dynamic, whereas the Wilkinsons also sound amazing but "flatter". Not exactly a one trick pony, but they don't seem to have the dynamic range and top end that the SDs can have. On the other hand, if you want something to push the amp really hard - yeah, that's where the Wilkinsons really shine.

I can’t hear a big difference to be honest and I want to as I need new pickups for a muddy old Yamaha
Are you watching in HD? UA-cam compression doesn't play nice in the lower quality settings, and it still smudges a bit in HD, but better. Either way, I'm still loving these pickups - they're brighter than the originals, and respond really well to picking dynamics. If you can find a set for a good price, I think you won't regret it.
Alternatively, you could pick up a set of Wilkinsons for almost literally peanuts. I have one waiting to fit into the bridge of a Pacifica...
I also just got a good recommendation for Rockinger pickups, but I haven't played them... yet! 😉

Yeh I get you, I feel very similarly about them. The Wilkinson's have their place on a balls to the wall guitar, but the SD's just feel more versatile. 😁

Now that's a very interesting comment, thank you for that 🙏🏻 Made me pause to think for a bit before answering, but I think I figured out why that was. In a nutshell, I tend to prefer higher output pickups, which for my sloppy style of playing and preferred gain staging can be a lot more forgiving - and I was making sure I didn't change settings for the sound comparison to be valid, so one of my safety nets was taken away. Added to that: brand new strings. I recorded the SD's straight after changing the strings, so they weren't bedded in yet and still feeling stiff.
And at the end of the day, I'm still a sloppy player 😁
I'll probably address this in further detail in the next Q&A, as it gives me a lot more food for thought than the easy "the Wilkinson's sound better". 👍🏻
I have tried this pickup which is the 4 conductor version ... sounds crazy ... the split coil is also similar to Strat / Tele

They both suck in the neck position. It is nearly impossible to find a clear, great sounding neck humbucker, regardless of brand. They're all just a wooly, muddy mess when pushed.

what kind of tone can we judge if all the sound you produce sounds like cats fighting in the middle of a railway accident. For God's sake haven't you heard of Hank Marvin or Mark Knopfler ..... we are talking vintage..... right ???? Any demo i go to ...you all sound the same and you make all guitars sound the same...yowling their heads off. Even the Beatles never resorted to such overdrive trash...and you guys are certainly not the Beatles.
I am wild because after hearing all the noise you made out of that poor instrument I still do not know how the pickups sound. So the use of your demo to me is Zero. Note : I have been playing a strat for about 15 years now in the shadows of Hank Marvin and desperately trying to get his sound.... so I know what I am talking about.

But why for heaven's sake do all guitarists today seem lost without their OD?
Doesnt a guitar produce all type of sounds ? One has to listen to MK's live " our Shangrila" with Emmy Lou to know what tone he conjures out of his strat. And what Hank did back in 1961 with Apache ? It is these sounds and tones which made the strat and the Les Paul the icons they are today....not the yowling and the screeching.
There's nothing wrong with what both HM and MK do with their Strats and clean / edge of breakup sounds, and if that's where someone wants to live - fair play, it's a lovely place to be in.
But I'll disagree with the characterisation of "guitarists today", and the tones that made both the Les Paul and Strat the icons they are today. Peter Green, Paul Kossoff, Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, Gary Moore, Jimmy Page, to name but a few - all of them around in the 60's and 70's, all of them driving their amps as hard as they could, and some still begging Jim Marshall to give them more gain. And they were a lot closer to 1961 than we are to them today. Even Knopfler sometimes grabs a Les Paul, kicks on the overdrive, and goes up to the dusty end of the fretboard.
And while I'm not comparing myself to any of them - far from it! - I will admit that a cranked Marshall tone wakes me up a lot quicker than a clean Vox. Think of it as food - I love the Vox clean sound, but I wouldn't want to eat just that every day for the rest of my life.
For the type of music I like playing, I prefer to have all that tonal palette at my disposal, knowing full well that in some songs, 3 bell-like notes played with a Strat's neck pickup going into an edge of breakup Vox will be a lot more powerful than 30 played with something else into an high gain amp. But not all songs are like that, and not all moods call for it. And sometimes only a Les Paul's bridge pickup into a Boss SD-1 into a cranked JCM800 will do it for me.
