These are the Green Magic Humbuckers and their origin story is as legendary and their tone, so lets take a closer look--
The magic is this Duncan humbucker pickup set stems from an honest mistake back in the 60s when Peter Green had a neck pickup installed with the magnet put back in the wrong direction creating an out of phase sound when both pickups were selected.
This epic midrange honk turned out to be a key ingredient in Green’s supernatural sound, along with his epic ‘59 Les Paul of course.
But it’s not just about flipping a magnet 180 degress, Duncan based the Green Magic pickups on some of the finest vintage PAFs around, with a formula based what MJ used in the Duncan Custom Shop builds years back.
When isolated, these humbuckers are all about vintage PAF tone with Alnico II magnets, excellent clarity by not being overwound and resistance of 7.7k on the neck and 8.7K on the bridge to help with output balance. With both pickups on and out of phase, you can back off either pickup volume and explore sonic sculpting brought on by the shifting frequencies being cut, from classic midrange quack to just a touch of low end roll off and mid emphasis. The Seymour Duncan Green Magic humbucker set is available in a variety of cover options to fit your style and come with a 4 conductor wire for extra wiring choices such as coil splitting or series/parallel.. I believe the late Gary Moore had a Les Paul like that
Yep, the same guitar (Greeny) was passed from Green to Moore and now it’s owned by Kirk Hammett!
Damn you know it by Gary Moore only damn. Read the history about that guitar and it's tone. Peter green was one of a kind.
Every demo that comes out I find myself more amazed by Andy’s playing than the gear itself. Sometimes I even forget what the videos about and just vibe to the playing.
I agree, I don’t even care about most of the actual gear.
straight facts has been for years.
Oh, to be able to just noodle away like that! 😑
Hey Seymour Duncan, you should let Andy keep that guitar for all the pickups he just sold 👍
I love when Andy plays a Paul. It sounds like he's doing the musical version of preaching.
Really appreciate it! I feel right at home with a LP, I hadn't owned a strat at all growing up!
In the great Gibson Vs. Fender debate, I come down pretty hard in the Fender camp, but Peter Green’s playing has always been such an inspiration (along with other LP players like Andy Latimer, Snowy White, etc).
I recently bought an Epiphone Les Paul Traditional Pro IV and installed these pickups. It sounds incredible and gives me EXACTLY the sound I was hoping for.
Great demo Andy, awesome job showing off all the different attributes this set has and what they can do. The out-of-phase sound isn't for everyone but man when it's utilized the right way and in the right setting it's an amazing sound! Cheers.
You create joyful and glorious sounds Andy. Really wonderful playing and great demo of that out-of-phase tone that cuts through so distinctly. I love my MJ Greenie custom wound set from a couple years ago and these new versions sound just as sweet and rich. You really make them shine brother. 👍
Thank you so much, this comment made my day! 👊👊
Andy makes those 'Green Magic's' shine! Beautiful tone!
These sound incredible Andy. Thanks for your demo.
Dang, Andy...I play Black Metal, but you've convinced me that I need me a set of these...that out-of-phase fuzz tone was 👌
Fuzz? 6:12 😬
@@JohannesLabusch 9:41 😉
@@lordimpaler3899 oh you got me good.
@@JohannesLabusch Its all good lol...i had to double check for myself (which is good sometimes), plus i got to hear Andy playing again lol
This demo sounds really good. Good job demoing them. :)
That makes me wanna buy a Les Paul, those pickups, and a timberman shirt.
They sound really good Andy. That tone on ‘Mr Wonderful’ is perfection for me, and this sounds very close.
Damn, this guy can play :D . Excellent demo , great playing , great tone. Have a good one !
That's the sound dude. Andy killing it! I still listen to old Fleetwood Mac, Perter Green had KILLER tone.
I use a lot of Seymour Duncan products, it's all good stuff.
That run at 46 seconds in🔥
Some tasty playing and tones!
Sounds amazing!!
great demo thank you Andy!
Love this!
Andy ...u r terrific 👍👍...totally awesome
The out-of-phase tonal variations you can get with slight tweaks to the the controls is amazing (and addicting).
*Addictive. 'Addicting' is something someone does to someone else and requires sentience and intention. Without sentience and the capability of forethought, something can only be addictIVE, not addictING.
@@aceflibble I believe Andy and the makers of this particular pickup set are sentient and capable of forethought.
Great video Andy! One thing about vintage Humbuckers I don't see much is people reviewing their high gain possibilities. Seth's on a low wattage amp like a Marshall JVM 205C, or 59's, Al Pro 2, SH- 16, and Pearly Gates. I'd love to hear a review of these pickups in that hard rock gain territory. No dropped D metal stuff, just good over-the-edge hard rock. No pedals, just straight jacked saturation. Again great review. Good pickups. I'd like to hear those to!
I flipped the magnet of the neck Burstbucker (and rotated the PU itself) years ago. Free and useful change to the middle position that I otherwise never used.
This is the proper way to achieve this "whacky" or "quacky" sound. Is not needed to flip the humbucker. And the trick here is: If you down a bit any volume (neck or bridge) this massive "quacky" sound will almost dissapear.
@@JaimeCerrada It's different way if you don't flip both the magnet and the pickup. And it it depends on a lot of your pickups and their height how the volume controls affect the tone of both pickups played at the same time. I have no problem getting quacky tones this way.
Oooh ya , sweet tones Andy !
I have a set of Seymour Duncan custom shop skinner burst set in my Les Paul,I recently purchased a set from Sd custom shop MJ Magic (skinner burst) they sound great just what I was looking for my ES339 . Great tone
Andy great demo!!! Please review the Seymour Duncan High Voltage pickups too!!! Thanks!!!
Beautiful. Amazing Tone. Paul-Caster. You've really got a Sweet Touch there 'Ol Boy with that Finger Picking Style that you've got down like a Clown Charlie Brown.Great Pickups ! 8.8k is plenty of output Kids ! It really allows for the Guitars Tonal Wood qualities to come out. Quack as you said is really accurate. You can really reach a wide Pallet w/ the Out of Phase. I think it is quite diverse and nails the '60's & early 70's Tones superbly. Great Demo. I for one would like to see you do a monthly (weekly) Series on Pickups. Bravo A.M. !. Great Playing, as usual. The space between Notes, the subtle nuances , "Forget About It" lol. PDX, In The House ! \m/-
Those pickups are bloody great, Awesome demo Andy!
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it! 👊
I was going to throw some P90s in my #2 LP, but after watching this video I'm thinking of just flipping the Burstbucker 2 around in the neck position, and doing some custom wiring. Saves money and gets some tone options outta my cherryburst. Thanx for the idea.
I just wanna say Doña Maricela Juárez is a legend. Of course Andy's demo make them sing!!
Great job sir
You’re an excellent guitarist.
Andy throwing down some peace frog !!!!!
That out of phase fuzz tone was so rad Andy
Thanks!! I usually keep pickup demos fairly “pure” but after trying the out of phase with fuzz, it seemed to bring out some awesome vocal qualities in these pickups, so I had to share it!
Dang you Andy!! I just bought these pickups. You sold me on these.
Happy to help! I hope you enjoy them 👍🏻
Andy is one of the great guitar players.
GOD DAMNIT! I just bought and installed fancy new humbuckers for my LP build, but as a Peter Green acolyte, I can't pass these up!
These sound amazing! I love the out of phase sound…these really have me in contemplation 🤔. I have a Bastard Frankenstein Tele Deluxe with Humbucker sized P/U’s that would be perfect for an upgrade? Shit! 😳
sounds beautiful when you play them. Not so much when i do it;)
5:18 Andy you always impress with the songs you play for your demos. But busting out Peace Frog is tremendous.
Thank so much, been waiting for the right opportunity to play that one! It’s an out-of-phase must 👊
Nice! Tell Seymor Duncan they should send you Blackened Black Winter Pickups aswell! I want to hear what they do when used for something else than just metal.
I'd love to see more demos of people using the Black Winters in other settings than just metal too! They're far more versatile than their name & marketing would imply.
Dirty Fingers are the same way.
Every demo’s a lesson. Love the way you’ve explored the interaction between the pups, and keeping the neck bright rather than too low on its own was great to hear. I’ll be off to practice that Radiohead rendition then. 👏🏻 Bravo Andy. Hopefully see you back on TPS to recreate the new ident chord soon?
So glad you enjoyed it, thanks!!
Where is the Radiohead rendition you mentioned?
@@Sorakorra 05:31 he started riffing around The Bends.
You could also get out of phase wiring by putting the ground where the hot should connect and the hot where ground should connect on your volume pot of one of your pick ups
Those sound good
Excellent playing and demo. I’m not sure how these will sound in a Sire L7 but I’m gonna find out. I hear “Jeremiah was a Bullfrog” in my head
💥💥💯 hot. I like it.
Sounds awesome! Now to see if someone puts a set in a 335...
Great sounding pickups and really nice looking LP Standard. I didn’t think the USA standards came this nice. 👍🏻
It's trendy to trash Gibson these days but they're legendary for a reason
@@jasondorsey7110 Gibson’s are my go to guitar’s.
In 96 I ordered a PRS Custom 24, took 9 months to get it. I’ve had it over 20 years , still can’t get used to it. They’re made very well, but sound Cold...
I was speaking with Don Felder and he can’t get used to his PRS either. He said, you can get used to it because it’s not. Gibson Les Paul....
I own many Les Pauls, a 64 Firebird V Explorer, 1967 ES 335-12 and a Johnny Smith.. , Ovation and many Fenders.
@@jamiemorgan4146 I have 3 gibsons in my bass collection...if you know about the bass community, most hate gibsons, primarily because they don't sound like a fender, but you can't really make a fender sound like a gibson either
I would like to see a comparison of these and Distortion Mayhem pickups. I have.
Super Pagey sound🤘🏼
I'm not a Les Paul guy but wow that top is making me question things.
I'm wondering/assuming a regular phase switch would change the pickups to normal phase.
I have a custom set of magnetically out of phase humbuckers wound by someone local to me in my SG, and a regular phase switch brings them back in phase. They sound really amazing together, the vintage-style wind makes the in-phase sound alot more characterful than alot of modern guitars
I'm giving serious thought about putting these in a 98 Epiphone dot 335 with a bigsby I just picked up.
What’s the difference in these and the greenybuckers released in the new custom shop greeny guitar ??
Dude, I love these pickups. How many watts are they? Are they true or false bypass? Asking for a friend
Saludos desde México ¿Estas pastillas me sirven para el sonido Gary Moore?
Hello there!!! For you with pickups are better ? This green magic’s or SD59
I prefer backing off on the bridge pickup in the middle out of phase position to favor the neck slightly - less strident than favoring the bridge pickup, still plenty of phasey character, almost Fender-ish.
Excellent point, I showed this briefly at 7:00 and it’s definitely a warmer tone. I just always seem to grab the neck vol just because it’s closer 😃
Did they have to wire it out of phase or does the neck magnet come flipped already?
@AndyDemos are you the voice of the Rocksmith "game"? 😁
The photo of the pickups in the box has the adjustable bobbins in the normal position but this guitar is like Peter's with the bobbins on the bottom?? So how do you install them then?
The orientation doesn’t affect whether it’s out of phase because the magnet relationship is the same. Duncan installed these like Green, you can choose either way.
@@AndyDemos Thanks Andy for the clarification bud.
These are killer and the are Duncan's most accurate sounding PAF clone to date with the Bonamassa skinnerbursts a close second. I hope gibson will eventually realse the Greeny Pickups they wound for the recent Greeny replica. They sound absolutely amazing . They are the most vintage sounding modern Gibson PAF type yet . They are slightly overwound like a BB2 and BB3 set but have way more clarity and are better balanced . They have the best aspects of custombuckers and the BB2 and 3 but sound better then either one of those. The are hotter then custombuuckers but also have more clarity and balance and are sweeter then the Custombuckers.
I don't expect this anytime soon as givisn us planning a less expense custom shop versions and maybe even a Gibson USA Version but it highly unlikely the USA version would get the customshop pickups. The USA Iommi monkey SG just got the regular Gibson P90s instead of the John Birch Simplux P90 clones the custom shop versions got . I would say any USA version at best would have a regular custombucker set with the neck magnet flipped but even that is unlikely . It would Almost certainly be a BB2 and 3 set with the neck pickup magnet flipped which is exactly what they did for collectors choice 1 which was the first Greeny les paul clone they did but then again that was 2010 so it was pre custombucker era . I would love to do a duncan and Gibson Greeny bucker shoot out
Based on the limited videos available The Duncan's sound warmer and sweeter while the gibsons seem to be more clear and a touch brighter.
Had t heard Gibson created a set of Green replicas. The Duncan pickups in this video sound great, but my burstbuckets wired for out of phase sound more like Greeny than the Duncan’s do here. That of course could also be the amp used here, too in part. Was excited to learn of these, but they don’t quite hit the mark enough to make me want to swap mine out. Anything that keeps people listening to and/or discovering Peter Green is a good thing. Kudos to Duncan for making these!
Does it sound that du j’y out of phase at every sound or tone level (in the middle position) ? Thanks a lot 🙏☺️
The phase relationship changes when you adjust the individual pickup volumes and tones. For instance, if you back off on the neck volume, the overall sound is bigger and brighter. In general, they are most "out of phase sounding" when both volumes are maxed.
I'm split on these and the slash model
Very Pink Floyd-esque good Sir
Can the neck pickup be paired with a different bridge pickup and still get the out of phase tone?
You can buy the neck separately, yes. However, there are a lot of variables to consider when doing this. Your bridge humbucker should be wound in the same direction and have a similar output, otherwise the out of phase tone may be harder to dial in due to the imbalance. It’s also possible your bridge pickup may have the same magnet orientation as the Duncan and you’d not be out of phase. You can buy those little magnet polarity tester tools to confirm.
@@AndyDemos Thank you! Great answer
Nothing beats SNS.
Only thing I never liked about seymour Duncan pickups was that big name logo on every pickup. Many friends I talk to agree thats a turn off when searching aftermarket pickups. Now, I did get a new YJM fury pickup and it has the seymour Duncan name on it, but its blacked out impregnated in the mold. Now that does look cool!!
Where can I buy that magic Andy talent?
Is that an Orange/Lemon Fade LP? What year?
Tobacco Burst would have sounded 78% better... because SCIENCE.
@@R1GAMBLER Definitely a smokier tone. 😉
Gibson robotic magnet flipper for standard and out of phase by remote control
Now I just need a guitar to put these in....
wonder how these would sound in a 335?
I think Andy is the Green Manalishi
What amp were you using?
(I think I can predict a few of the responses, but I really want to know!)
Hamstead Artist 60.
His gear's usually listed in the description.
@@grundunterrecording4197 thanks. I should’ve checked that.
Do you do lessons at all?
I did a series call Riff of the Day for ProGuitarShop but otherwise, no. I never had formal lessons myself, so it's not really my area. Thanks!
I'm watching this only to hear Andy play Peter Green.
Why is the pickup installed backwards? *edit* the magnet is already backwards. It's supposed to be installed like a normal set.. its even shown that way on SD site.
Peter Green’s was installed this way, so that’s the way SD sent this guitar. You don’t have to flip the pickup for it to be out of phase, though. Just up to your preference. The poles being in different spots is said to have an influence on the tone. Thanks!
@@AndyDemos I understand back vs forward Vs up and down. In my defense, it didn't sound right or perform as expected. It's not your fault.
My mind hasn't changed btw.
Well, from what I hear, that out of phase thing seems like a weird copy of mini-humbucker sound.
Another gear demo? Meh. Oh? Andy is doing the demo? COUNT ME IN!!!
Don't really like it much in a LP but in a 2xHB tele it could be perfect IMO.
I see that your screws are in the same place on your humbuckers… aren’t they supposed to be bridge screws to the bridge and neck screws toward the neck???
Did you watch the video? That's the point...
That's the way the neck pickup was installed in Peter Green's guitar after it was repaired.
Actually, the magnet being flipped inside the pickup is what matters, not the way the pickup is installed in the guitar.
Can only imagine what they would sound like with a pick...
Pretty much the same, pick attack doesn't equal tone.
new seth lovers?
The Gibson 61r set sounds better out of phase
split the coils and you have a les paul, a strato and a mustang in one guitar.
No mention of Gary Moore? hmph.
In the interest of time, I didn’t get into the story of his Les Paul. I’m happy that it was in good hands with Moore and now Hammett. Thanks for watching!
I can never understand why in demos like this players add TOO MUCH overdrive. Peter Green's classic tone was much cleaner and purer, especially on slower blues, often with the addition of haunting reverb. As a player of more than 60 years, I think I can safely say that 90% of the sound comes from the player, a combination of technique, "feel" and above all emotion expression. Peter Green in his heyday was master of all these qualities. Two or three notes can say much more than ten minutes of overdriven "shredding"!
I don’t know, did you watch passed the intro tune? Also, it’s not a how to sound like Peter Green video, no disrespect to the legend, this is a pickup set demo. Thanks!
@@AndyDemos Cheers Andy, fair point. I suppose tbh I was really making a general observation. You find a review of eg an original 1959 Les Paul or 1957 strat and the person proceeds to pile on the gain and shred. Not really showing the qualities such classic instruments! 🤘
@@elguapo3526 I get it, that’s a pet peeve of mine as well!
4 conductor wiring? No thanks.
Curious 🧐
Andy plays great, but you could just turn your neck pup around and get that screechy horrible sound.
Nope, this is a common misconception to get out of phase sounds. Although Peter Green's pickup was installed with poles toward the bridge, out of phase happens when the MAGNET direction is reversed in relation to the wind of the pickup. It's not for everyone but there are lots of great tones that are out of phase, besides Peter Green and Gary Moore, like the solo to Bohemian Rhapsody!
$258 bucks for a set of these...plus tax. Thanks, but I'll keep my stock pups.
bareknuckle prices, but lower slightly
If they were made by MJ, they're worth every penny, that's straight facts
