"This is the score that turned me into a Goldsmith fan." Me too! I remember being thirteen years old and sitting in the theater and hearing the main title to this for the first time. Later that summer, The Swarm, and then a year later, Star Trek: The Motion Picture, sealed the deal.

Ohhh I agree!!....not to mention the opening soft notes of the original "First Blood".... Goldsmith made me think only 2 words to describe it....Faded Glory".... The man was a genius... Hard to believe his only Oscar win was for "The Omen"...he definitely should have got one for the original "Planet of the apes".

Ohh and one more...seek out a movie called, "The reincarnation of Peter Proud".. It is meant to be haunting....and Dear God it is one of the most melodic haunting scores ever made..Good Times!!

His work is unsurpassed. His music spoke for the films heart.. The bombastic weight of this one.... The hauntedness of Peter Proud... The plotting of The Satan Bug....The tainted glory in First Blood..The discovery of conspiracy in Coma...and of course the whispering of evil in The Omen,...He was as diverse as film composer could be.

I have collected soundtracks all my life the first being the very first album I ever bought which was John Williams' "Jaws" right after seeing the movie opening day in 1975. I had loved movie music but being rather young had no idea so many scores were available and that many I really wanted were not. (The scores of "The Poseidon Adventure" and "The Omega Man" anyone?) There was no internet to look for them and record store clerks didn't care enough to look for a title if a kid asked them to. "If we don't have it it didn't come out" was the usual answer. The first Jerry Goldsmith score I bought was "Patton" and even then I was frustrated that much of the music from the film was not there and that George C. Scott's last monologue was run over that short little piece of the score at the end of the film.
"Capricorn One" was an absolute must when I saw the film when it opened in 1978. By then I had collected about fifty soundtracks and always looking for more. I bought it at full price and the hastily run off album was of very poor quality with a ton of ticks and pops all the way through it. Luckily I later found some "cut out" promotional copies for a buck each that were of perfect quality and bought all that were in the bin. My OCD need to collect more than one of all the things I loved. It was a fantastic score and I loved to play it full blast on my stereo while building some model or drawing or something. Goldsmith became one of the three kings of movie music the other two being Williams and Barry of course. At that time they seemed to be the only three composers out there. Goldsmith was wonderfully prolific though. That period
Eventually I came to collect over a thousand vinyl soundtrack albums by the time CD's came around in the early 80's. I then had to buy all the CD re-releases of them all and I STILL have them all in a storage locker! I keep telling myself I'll have another dedicated media room for them all along with all my videos when I finally manage to buy another house.

Man, your story is so much like mine from the 70s. My first ever Goldsmith score was Alien on LP. Then I got Star Trek:The Motion Picture later that year and that sealed it for me. Gold became and still is my favorite composer. That sent me on a quest to get everything he had done up until that time. This meant lots of cut-outs and used LPs but I didn't care. I had to hear everything so I started going backwards snapping up everything I could find. The Blue Max, Chinatown, the Wind and The Lion, Patton, The Omen, QBVII, The Great Train Robbery, Coma, The Swarm, Macarthur, The Cassandra Crossing, Logan's Run, The Boys From Brazil, Papillon, Freud, A Patch of Blue, The Sand Pebbles, Planet of The Apes... everything until I was caught up to that time which was 1979. For me there were three film composers who's scores I would buy note-unheard. Goldsmith, Williams, and Barry.

Goldsmith did for helicopters what Williams had done for sharks. I prefer the cues in the film to the re-recordings used on the album release. It's a very influential score and you can hear its influence in 'Conan The Barbarian', 'Aliens', 'Titanic', 'Last Action Hero', etc.

You can hear James Horner's inspiration for Aliens' soundtrack in this suite, particularly at 5:49.

Me too, this is the one where I discovered Jerry Goldsmith. The soundtrack was so powerful as it blended with and enhanced this underrated movie. Later, I went to a concert where he conducted his best stuff. It was AWESOME!

There were several heart-breaking and terrifying scenes in this movie: making that terrible climb up a sheer cliff, only to find two black copters waiting for you was one of them.
And yet, the one line that scared the crap out me most was when Dr. Calloway told the trapped astronauts: "You have to help!" "What do you mean, I have too?" "You HAVE TO HELP!" "What if I don't?" "YOU HAVE TO HELP! Please: YOUR FAMILIES!"

If you're not making any money on it then it's considered fan sharing. It's also such an old score that the labels that might own it have sold out and the studio doesn't care.
