vibrant for a copper shell is always a good thing.
Totally! This was the first metal snare I owned that sounded like it was already EQ’ed out the box. This is a beautiful combo!
Cool
Appreciate the kind words. Glad you enjoyed! 🥁 🥁
SO tasty! Sounded great at all the tunings.
Almost sounds EQ’ed in real life, this thing is unreal!
Nice job Nick! Great review!
Many thanks, @icharbuckle ! Appreciate you taking the time to watch and leave a comment. Did you have a preferred tuning?
I think the Medium High is my favorite. I like the medium as well. But too much lower is too messy for me... Also, The cranked tuning seemmed like it was ready to choke the drum... I usually use 40 or 32 strand snares with my bigger drums. I have an 8x14 Maple Gretsch 8 ply, sounds so good with the wide snares. Cheers!

I like the medium high tuning with this one - nice direct sound without it being choked. That gretsch sounds like a tank! 10 lug or 8 lug?
10 Lug. Very sweet and Big...@@NickCostaMusic
Nice detail in the video. I have a 5x14 of this same drum. This sounds great.
I’ve always been interested in hearing the 5x14 in person. Probably a bit more direct?
The look of this snare is stunning! Very beautiful finish! But I tend to dislike the sound of a metal drum on low and medium tuning. It always feels like the metal is buzzing, that metals are vibrating against each other. To my liking, metal drums need to be high tuning. Then it sound like your hammering an anvil and that sounds great! Anyway, just my liking.
Another great observation! I use to be the same way, now I find myself gravitating towards metal over wood snares. I also tend to default my snares to medium - medium-high tunings though
Nick, love that drum! It sounds great!
Can I ask about your cymbal setup in this video? Specifically about your ride and hihats. Thanks...
Thanks, mach1man001! What was your favorite tuning?
Cymbals we’re 14” K fat hats, 19” k sweet crash, 24” classic orchestral ride, 20” k dark thin, 18” k efx - all from the best, Zildjian!
I liked all the tunings except for the cranked. I was surprised how good it sounds down low. Honestly, I don't think most metal snares sound good tuned low. That one did though.
Totally get that. Might be the overtones from the metal that really stick out?
This had a pretty interesting tone! I feel like almost any drum can be used for certain situations which is why snares and cymbals must be so addictive.
Looking forward to my LM402 (60s) arrival. Should be here Tuesday. Just getting into some of the Luddy snares. A Black Beauty is still on my radar.
I have a pretty good selection now of metal snares. What do you suggest as a really good wood snare? I know you like that company you used to work for that had the steam bent shells (forget the name). Any other must haves? I have a Stage Custom Birch, that i just never seem to really love. And a PDP Maple thats almost piccolo thin (i think 4.5k. I don't enjoy that much either. I would like to find a nice warm wood snare for jazz that can have a nice wet snare sound with good sensitivity to ghost notes. If thats a possibility lol
Such a great sound that’s unlike anything else out there in my opinion. You’re gonna love that 402 - there’s a reason they’re the most recorded snare.
Black Beauty is another sound album everyone tries to imitate, but never comes close. The closest one is also from Ludwig - the universal black brass.
For wood, I couldn’t recommend Ludwig’s universal line. The beech is my favorite - Ludwig Universal Series 6.5X14 Beech Snare Drum (LU6514BE) Demo and Review!
