Quick comment on the Luddy badges - The Transition series of badges were used between Nov 1958 - Nov 1960 during the brand switch between WFL to Ludwig Drum Co. In that period, you can find drums that mixes WFL and Ludwig hardware
@@ImSueeb @E-Tube315 Maybe Easton Mitchell wants to be able to play the snare drum first. I'm a guitar player, but I know that the snare is pretty important to a drummer, and I wouldn't want to buy a guitar without playing it first if I can help it.
Adam Rainstopper Thats exactly what I want to do. I don't want to spend a lot of money on something from online if I haven't played in person first. Videos usually mix the sounds of the drums and even if they don't they don't sound the same as it would in person.
No virus is going to stop me 😤, bought a Yamaha Musashi oak 13x.6. 5 at a pawn shop for $45 amd then scored a 1986 Gallien Krueger 800rb bass head for $125 from a guy off of Offer Up 🤷♂️
That Ludwig drum; the painting could be original because the grommet there doesn't look tampered with, or replaced, as best I can tell. The top rim looks to be Slingerland, the bottom looks to be a brass hoop which is most likely original. The paint would be referred to as "Duco," meaning Dupont Company paint (same term is used to often describe the two tone finish on some drums). That transition era badge is between late 1958 and into 1960 when William F Ludwig II bought his name back and began making drums under the Ludwig name again.
That could be a good idea.... and maybe the winner can decide wha5 type of motif David can add? Or the winner can also help do it.... yeah, I know...after Rona is done wreaking havoc
Had a great drum week myself. Got my first Black brauty. Snagged a vintage gretsch ssb bass drum and scored a Tama royal star in amazing shape just needs to be cleaned
@@faperito2389 Yap, I've a ludwig black Beauty and a Sensitone Elite bronze and I can say that I like more the Ludwig but, the pearl is pretty similar and it costs less than half bb...
Like your Imperial Star snare drum at the end of your video .The Pearl sensitone aluminum is a great snare I think you'll like it . I had a 6.5x14 Pearl aluminum snare drum and I really enjoyed it but I sold it. The Ludwig supraphonic the shell that you have that has a lot of pitting you can have the Chrome professionally removed and then shine up the aluminum shell and it'll look pretty bright give it a shot. That's a pretty sweet 8x15 old Ludwig snare drum you have there, can't wait to see what you do to it and also hear it.
Hey David, I have an old Tama Imperialstar 10 lug steel snare that I would really like to restore! It needs a lot of work, but I was wondering if I could email you some photos with a few questions?
I've also been having the same issue here lately with some people selling stuff on fb or Craigslist.. Seems like they overprice alot of times and sadly they don't even know what they actually have and get offended when you prove otherwise..Its a gamble when meeting up. People are people i guess...
Question please. I'm attempting restoring a 1960 round badge Gretsch snare. Great snare but it has a finish separation (1.5" bubble). Would you have a way of flatten it back to the wood shell? Thank you. Love your vids on vintage restoration awesome work.
I like if you say "i buy it because it's a cheap" 😁, just like what i do when buying secondhand snare or other drum stuff 😁😁, btw very good classic snares...
I have realized this channel has evolved into so much I remember when you made that video about Tom resanance in snare stands and now you have all this good gear and subscribers
David you legend please answer I know you'll know.. Does the remo quick clutch fit inside the pipe of the iron cobra hi hat stand? Thanks for all the knowledge dude!!!!!
People are still buying. I literally just sold a 5piece Sonar set . Made some cash . This would be my 3rd full set for the year. Soon sell lots of my small odds and ends. Great video 👍👍👍
My selling ventures include selling a "Revere" snare from a thrift store and a HCS ride, they both sucked so I wasn't expecting to profit but I didn't even break even after paying for shipping. But I bought a Pearl Sensitone Steel and a Tama Imp Star.
Me: 5 Snares: DW Design Series Nickel over Brass 14 X 6.5 [my favorite}; pdp Concept Maple 14 X 5.5 (came with the PDP 6 Drum Kit I purchased Used last year); DW concept Maple Black Wax 10 X 6.5 Popcorn : Mapex 13 X 3.5 Piccolo ; and a Griffin 13 X 3.5 Piccolo. Except for the Mapex Snare and the DW Popcorn , I replaced the Batter snare heads with Evans HD Dry heads. Stock wires used on all the drums. They all produce "different" sounds. I play solely as a Hobbyist in Retirement (70 YO), and have set up my kit to include playing either the PDP or the DW as my main snare, mount the Popcorn snare on my Hi Hat stand, and either he Mapex or the Griffin as a side snare off the kit. Allows me to add some "spice" when I play to MY MUSIC. My observations : the Pdp Maple, the DW Brass snare, and the Griffin with the HD Dry heads produce the most pleasing sound ( no mics or EQs), to me in my Finished and acoustically untreated Basement. With The Mapex, I use the stock head (Remo UC coated); the DW Popcorn snare has a stock Remo coated that is wearing - just purchased a Remo Controlled sound with center dot head that I will install to see the sound difference. The Piccolo and popcorn snares do add some Flare to the sound as I roll around them for some Fills, especially in the Latin Rock (Santana) plays. Happy Drumming to All. I guess Variety is the Spice To Life.
I owned a Ludwig snare from this era in this color. It looks factory. It’s the same dark blue as the blue/silver fade duco. Look at the back of the grommet if you want yo know if the badge was removed.
As far as I'm aware, Rogers drums were only made in the U.S.A. That was until they went belly-up and sold off to Brook Mays in 1998. I believe some of the Rogers Drums I had during the Brook Mays era were maid in Taiwan. In 2006 Brook Mays sold off Rogers to Yamaha who in turn sold them to Dixon in 2017. Rogers Drums are now being handmade by Bill Detamore of Pork Pie Percussion for Dixon.
Terr Cain they did make their r-360 and r-380 series over seas. The first generation of those was manufactured by Yamaha and then finished in the US in the 1960s. These are really pretty nice drums. The 1980s generation ones are.... bad. This dynasonic however, is absolutely real (aside from the parts he mentioned) and is a rare bird at 6.5 instead of 5.
I’m still very happy with my 1966 Rogers Holiday kit. I bought it at age 16. All the stands are replaced and I’m using an AcroLite snare. Still have the DynaSonic but it’s too loud.
I found a weird 9x13" trans badge stamped in '60, same lugs. It was in shambles then i fixed it up real nice. Cant find any info on it like the shell but damn i love that odd size!!
Hey man, just in case you still have both Ludwig Superphonic shells, you could leave the ugly one as it is and make a sound comparison with the same hardware and heads. Would be an interesting video, at least to me
Awesome vid man, love your posts. I often pretend I live my life like yours. Hey will you ever get any more of those teal kick drum stickers? They were sick!
Looking for a new snare drum and want to stay in the 400$ range. Currently playing a big black brass by pork pie. It has a nice sound but I’m pretty sure it’s warped because the end of the hit on it has a weird wamp noise. Basically looking for suggestions on something for rock with a nice deep but crisp hit if that makes any sense
Been there done that! When you go crazy and think you need to try every snare on the planet you get to a point where you realize that "space" is a real issue and that in reality U only need one good snare that sounds good. (that everyone in the band likes)
is it possible to own too many snares?
nah.
No.
not if theyre cheap!
never.
No
Whenever I'm sad, I talk to my snares and they always give me some sympathetic vibration. They get me.

cool video, the magnet test for the brass shell was pretty cool too!

How many snare drums does a drummer need?
One more!

I just sold a snare. Mapex mars pro. First edition.
Remo makes specific drum heads for out of round vintage drums and it’s a game changer- Remo classic fit coated or not coated
Seriously do they make them for the kick drum also cus my bass drum hoop is out of round
That's not the idea , the idea is they fit vintage drums that are not the same diameter as modern drums.
Nickel plating is put down on the brass before the chrome, that's where the magnetism comes from. Cheers!
Tie a string around the bells and the other end tie a pull loop and place it by the door bell button.
Had a great drum week myself. Got my first Black brauty. Snagged a vintage gretsch ssb bass drum and scored a Tama royal star in amazing shape just needs to be cleaned
I have almost the exact same supraphonic, its a 917 too! Easily one of my favorite snares for sure.
That Pearl snare looks amazing
And the sound is killer too...
I have one of those, and they sound amazing. And they're way cheaper than the Ludwig ones, so wiiin.

You can attach these jingles to some kind of drilled cymbal, or stick them with some tape to a normal crash, i think it would sound quite nice.
