Totally. All these folks trashing the Aquarian heads…and I’m like, REALLY?? To my ears, they have SO much more character than every Remo/ Evans head I heard in this video.
Timpano percussion Really you have saved me so much time for choosing new drum heads and I would never have the patience or time to do this. I would have paid for this demonstration lol.
I'm a bit shocked, but I have to give the gold to the Aquarian Texture Coated. Thank you for your hard work! I only wish a few things were different... - The you had used a more standard snare like a Black Beauty - That you had used the same kick drum the whole time - That you had used the same room and rug the whole time - That you had used a metronome and played the same tempo the whole time
Hi there, thank you for your constructive criticism! We hear you but we just want to clarify a few things :) - The snare choice is subjective and we thought the 14X6 (right between 5.5 and 6.5) Yamaha Maple snare would be somehow considered as "standard". But we get it for your choice of a Black Beauty ;) - This video is a mashup of our 3 ULTIMATE snare comparison videos (each made specifically for a certain brand) and almost 2 years and a half have passed by the time we did the first (Remo) and last (Aquarian) comparison. We've sold many kits during this period including those that were used in the videos so we had to change kick drums obviously! - It is the same room! For the rug, we didn't really pay attention. - As previously stated this is a mashup and we never thought that it would be leading to this compilation! We did replicate the same beat but it's only when we've edited THIS video that we realized the tempo was slightly varying from a comparison to another. Anyhow we're glad it helped you make a choice! Keep groovin' :)
Yes, a great comparison video. Many great sounding heads. The variety we have to choose now a days is really mind-blowing. Back in the early 60's when I started out playing, not as many options obviously. I've been using the UV1's from Evans since first were introduced. Just recently pick-ed up a UV2 for some thicker depth snare drums I have, loved them. The UV series so far holds up for a long time before needing replaced. Take care of your equipment, be safe, and all good things fellow drummers!!!
I been playing speed metal music for 16 years. I have destroyed or deformed evans and remo snare heads on just 2 weaks. I've been using Aquarian high energy and hi impact for the last 8 years, the sound its great, they are undestructables!! Even after more than 2 years of usage they still on good shape and sound.
My 4 favorite snare drum heads are a Remo Vintage Emperor, an Evans UV2, a Remo Coated Emperor and an Evans Heavyweight. In general, Remo Drumheads and Evans Drumheads are my two favorite drumhead brands.
Never have I been able to so clearly hear the differences among all the heads. In the end, it reinforced my decision to play Remo heads. I was surprised however at how notably some of the Aquarian heads kicked up the volume and energy level.
Thank you , you are a legend. I have listened to most of your videos over and over. Still a Remo fan though. My faves are Emporer 1st . controlled sound 2nd.
It's really interesting, all Evans heads have a distinctive mid-range "chock" sound that is really noticeable in the ghost notes, while Remo heads are less abrasive and have a woodier spank to them
Made me realize how much of an Evan's man I am. I've never used an Evan's and instead endured with various remos and and mufflers. Turns out I just needed to change head companies.
@@anthonynunyabizness9989 same. my drums always sounded cack with Remo heads. Evans brought the drums to life and everyone comments how great they sound. Every gig.
After the 1,000,000th time of listening to this, still feeling Remo man. They just have more nuisance and charisma to them that makes them more musical. I like how there are a range of sounds to choose from, open and ringy to controlled and tight, as well as being able to choose clear or coated for each head shown. Evans overall sounds a little more synthetic and copy-paste from head to head in comparison. It’s almost as if they try to make all their heads to sound mixed out of the box, which is cool in one way but limiting in another
When it comes down to it, it’s all personal preference. But in my opinion from listening, the Evans heads, no matter the thickness, all sounded very much alike and high pitched? Aquarian seemed like hit or miss? Meaning some sounded really good and others, I wouldn’t use even if someone gave them to me! Remo, everyone of them in this video, sounded great!
Evans are naturally higher pitched and brighter than Remo... at the same Drum Dial tension. But if you tuned them all to the same pitch with a Tune-Bot, all of a sudden it's a different ball game... and the Evans start to sound more open and full, while the Remos start to sound choked.
Thx for the video & I really appreciate the time and effort that was needed to produce the product. Surprisingly Evans had a few that I really liked with Remo having one. I didn't care for the Aquarian heads.
Beautiful. Took days to pull this effort off I’m sure, but the amount of information we drummers get from it is hands down the best! You guys really hit it out of the park with this one.
That was a wild ride! You can always muffle a lively head, but not the other way around. All my snares have internal mufflers and coated Ambassadors. Cheers!
To me it's like this: Pinstripe > Powerstroke > Controlled Sound > Ambassador > Emperor even if the last models have catchier names, Pinstripe have the perfect balance between punch and sustain!!!
This is amazingly useful, thank you! The variety of heads is simply bewildering so, not having bought a drum head in 25 years, I was going to go back to Remo. Now I know that would have been a good choice. They just sound ‘right’ to me.
Aquarian is weird cause half the heads sound great and really unique and the other half just sound cheap. One head by them not listed here is the Hi-Velocity Onyx Coated head. I use that on my snare and it’s really awesome sounds great
The Evans heads just don't really have any tonal quality to them. I was actually impressed by some of the Aquarian heads. I remember trying some of their heads back in the day and not really liking them. A few really stood out to me here though.
Thank you so much. I have an emperor on my LM402 that I’m gonna switch out for a CS today. Just try it for fun. I also liked the ambassador Fyberskin too. Might have to order that one as well.
That's what I thought for 30 years, but I'm testing out some 2 and 3 ply heads at the moment because I'm sick of the ping and ring from ambassadors, but I'm morally against moon gels and gaffer tape haha
I am not partial to any brand. From Remo, I liked only 4 models. The 77, the Powerstroke 4, the Ambassador Fybreskin and of course the Pinstripe. I played the Pinstripe for years so this is not a surprise for me. Sounds super familiar. The Evans have only 2 models on this video that really catch my ear. The EC1 and the EC reverse dots. I like their punch and control without sounding dull. Can imagine to have it on the live and practice kit. The Onyx also deserve some experimentation. The Aquarian Reflector is the only one I really would buy from their offerings. The rest of the Aquarians have a boom to them which somehow doesn't sit well with my playing. That said, a lot of their heads can be used in different tinings and music genres/styles. I just happen to like balanced, punchy and direct sounding heads more. Thanks for this test again. A lot of work indeed.

Totally. All these folks trashing the Aquarian heads…and I’m like, REALLY?? To my ears, they have SO much more character than every Remo/ Evans head I heard in this video.
I switched to Aquarian a few years ago and love them
Thank you so much for taking the time, interest, and energy to do this. You are awesome.
Hi Greg, thank you for your comment! You're awesome too ;)
Timpano percussion
Really you have saved me so much time for choosing new drum heads and I would never have the patience or time to do this. I would have paid for this demonstration lol.
Wow, appreciate all the work, thanks.
Remo hands down
Evans has a few surprises.
Playing remo 77 few years now but really loved how the powerstroke 4
I had no idea that different heads made that big of difference. Mind blown 🤯

The best head comparison video, period... That's one sick groove right there!
Remo is the best ❤
Man.... Thank you for doing this. You don't know how much this helps.
I'm a bit shocked, but I have to give the gold to the Aquarian Texture Coated. Thank you for your hard work! I only wish a few things were different...
- The you had used a more standard snare like a Black Beauty
- That you had used the same kick drum the whole time
- That you had used the same room and rug the whole time
- That you had used a metronome and played the same tempo the whole time
Hi there, thank you for your constructive criticism! We hear you but we just want to clarify a few things :)
- The snare choice is subjective and we thought the 14X6 (right between 5.5 and 6.5) Yamaha Maple snare would be somehow considered as "standard". But we get it for your choice of a Black Beauty ;)
- This video is a mashup of our 3 ULTIMATE snare comparison videos (each made specifically for a certain brand) and almost 2 years and a half have passed by the time we did the first (Remo) and last (Aquarian) comparison.
@@Timpanopercussion Totally understandable now that I know the story. Great work!

Did you used Powerstroke 77? Im using one, and i heard it is pretty durable
Thank you very much for this. Remo CS is still the king apparently.
The pleasure is all ours!
I think the Ambassador X for me is the goat. But CS sounds crisp tho
The amount of work provided to make this video is substantial. Thank you for this effective video.
Wow! Amazing video!!! You are going to sell LOTS more Aquarian from this video for sure!
We hope as well! Thank you for the comment Gabriel!
My 4 favorite snare drum heads are a Remo Vintage Emperor, an Evans UV2, a Remo Coated Emperor and an Evans Heavyweight. In general, Remo Drumheads and Evans Drumheads are my two favorite drumhead brands.
This video is a wealth of information. Thank you so much for making it!
I bought a evans hd dry but as i improve as a drummer i been leaning more into ringy snare.. i love it when it blends to my recordings
These Aquarian heads are tuned much lower than the others. I have all three brands on different snares. They all kick ass if tuned properly!
Vraiment merci beaucoup pour cette essai comparatif. Très bien réalisé et aide beaucoup dans le choix de la peau de snare
I feel like aquarian heads are good for piccolo size drums while Evan's are good for bigger 8 inch drums. And remo is that sweet spot of 5-6
For snare yeah
@@James-pf3ej havent got my hands on anything bigger, but I have been looking at purchasing a snom tho
I ain’t ever seen a snare deeper than 8 that’s crazy
Elijah McCormick marching snares are big af
I had the jack dejohnette on my 12 inch piccolo. Sounded great.
out of all 62 heads, my two that i use are the Remo P77 and the Evans HD dry

Remo Ambassador Hazy Snare Side 14
Excellent comparison. Thank you so much for putting this together!!!
Hi there, thank you for your comment! The pleasure is all ours :)
Never have I been able to so clearly hear the differences among all the heads. In the end, it reinforced my decision to play Remo heads. I was surprised however at how notably some of the Aquarian heads kicked up the volume and energy level.
Hi Eddie, glad it helped you make a choice! Keep groovin'
Remo sounds awesome.. ✌️
one of the most useful videos on UA-cam, you can get an idea of the sound of the drumhead without having to buy it, thanks!
My Favorites. Do you agree?

Nice choices mate!!👍
I personally love the power stroke 4
Im a remo fan myself. I tried evans, and aquarian, but I just love the liveliness of remo.
I was about to buy some Evans heads... Wow Remo just has it! Every head breathes and has so much tone.
Bravo! One question though: were the aquarians miked differently? They sound crisper and louder than the others.
Yeah I was wondering the same thing. The aquariums definitely sounded considerably louder which actually made them sound better to me
They use a different Mylar they make themselves. Aquarians are vastly superior.
@@RustyKnorr I personally thought the Aquarian sounded significantly worse than the others
Awesome - I only wish this video existed when I was an active drummer 20 years ago. Great vids!!
Remo CS
Reno Powerstroke 77
Evans Heavyweight 2 ply with reverse dot
Thanks👍🏼
Thank you , you are a legend. I have listened to most of your videos over and over. Still a Remo fan though. My faves are Emporer 1st . controlled sound 2nd.
It's really interesting, all Evans heads have a distinctive mid-range "chock" sound that is really noticeable in the ghost notes, while Remo heads are less abrasive and have a woodier spank to them
Made me realize how much of an Evan's man I am. I've never used an Evan's and instead endured with various remos and and mufflers. Turns out I just needed to change head companies.
I've always used Evans and this video made me realize why.

If I was in Montreal, you couldn't get rid of me....... lucky for you! Thanks for another super informative presentation!
Thank you for the kind words! You can always order from our website if ever ;) Cheers
Stranger danger there, buddy.
This is wicked! Remo bass drum comparison soon?
That would be terrific, especially if it’s done with the same concept.
Thx for the video & I really appreciate the time and effort that was needed to produce the product. Surprisingly Evans had a few that I really liked with Remo having one. I didn't care for the Aquarian heads.
The Evans EC Reverse Dot heads are fuckin iconic. I'll never use a different snare head
Beautiful. Took days to pull this effort off I’m sure, but the amount of information we drummers get from it is hands down the best!
You guys really hit it out of the park with this one.
Hi Ross, it did take some time but the result pays off! Glad you found this to be useful!
I've been a Remo guy for 30 years.
But Aquarian eh? Holy Shit balls, I love the sound.
Whitecloud Ramone are you deaf?
What?
Whitecloud Ramone all the Aquarian heads sound like complete trash.
@@bhutch216to each their own. Maybe you're not playing them right 🙄
That was a wild ride! You can always muffle a lively head, but not the other way around. All my snares have internal mufflers and coated Ambassadors. Cheers!
The Remos sound all dope🤷🏽♂️
To me it's like this:
Pinstripe > Powerstroke > Controlled Sound > Ambassador > Emperor
even if the last models have catchier names, Pinstripe have the perfect balance between punch and sustain!!!
SuperBrictson I have played the pinstripe for a while but I do like the Ambassador Coated most🤷🏽♂️
@@philippmarkusjahn6500 I forgot the Remo's Diplomat, they all sound kick ass!!!
This is amazingly useful, thank you! The variety of heads is simply bewildering so, not having bought a drum head in 25 years, I was going to go back to Remo. Now I know that would have been a good choice. They just sound ‘right’ to me.
Hi there, we're glad you appreciate :)
Aquarian is weird cause half the heads sound great and really unique and the other half just sound cheap. One head by them not listed here is the Hi-Velocity Onyx Coated head. I use that on my snare and it’s really awesome sounds great
Thank you for this. I'm just glad that I'm not the the one that had to switch the heads!!
I think overall Evans has a dryer sound whereas Remo is a little more resonant. Guess it all depends on the sound you’re going for.
The Evans heads just don't really have any tonal quality to them. I was actually impressed by some of the Aquarian heads. I remember trying some of their heads back in the day and not really liking them. A few really stood out to me here though.
Amazing and comprehensive work on this video, definitely reduces time and money!
Fyi: with snares on, all 62 heads sound like a snare drum.
And all 62 sound better than mine
Thank you so much.
I have an emperor on my LM402 that I’m gonna switch out for a CS today. Just try it for fun. I also liked the ambassador Fyberskin too. Might have to order that one as well.
After 40 years and nearly every drum head, nothing frees up the full sound of a snare like a Remo coated Ambassador.
That's what I thought for 30 years, but I'm testing out some 2 and 3 ply heads at the moment because I'm sick of the ping and ring from ambassadors, but I'm morally against moon gels and gaffer tape haha
@@totigerus Coated ambassador seems to just have that perfect snare sound even if the durability is questionable..
