Packing in cold and rainy weather has two big advantages: Firstly, you can figure out how many swear words you know and secondly, it is character building if you don't say them.

great video! I dont understand why so many people are worried about how they have to hike the trail. If you slack pack or take a zero day or whatever, it still does not take away from the fact that you are doing something amazing for yourself. Great job Kelly, hope your friend gets better. Be proud of yourself period!

Agree totally Jennifer!! This is a journey of a lifetime. An adventure! It really drives me nuts how some people try to impose "rules" on how it should be done. I would love to see a rule book for hiking/backpacking. Oh wait....I don't think there is one....lol!!! Take care!

The start of this video should be mandatory viewing for anyone considering the AT. It truly captures what the conditions can be like. Bummer that Hemlock Hollow was closed. Was one of my favorite hostels on the AT. Only bad part was the walk past the hillbilly farm with lots of pit bulls and rebel flags on the way to the hostel.

Hey Kelly.. Excellent video showing the realities of trail life where you're always adjusting and yet you never get adjusted. One day warm and dry; next day cold and wet. It's learning to flow with the trail instead of fighting it that gets one to Katahdin. The trail doesn't adjust to the hiker; the hiker must adjust to the trail, and the way all of you started out cold with everything wet illustrates that. Loved the thorough editing too, and the hostel tour was great. Keep pushing north, one step at a time... one day at a time!

Morning Kelly! You know it has to said at least once, no pain, no rain, no Maine! Your gear looks like it's holding up well so far, nothing like a good puffy and rain jacket! Very nice lunch, KH Italian ramen! Such a funny rescue story! Thank you momma Kelly and thank you Kate! "Why put in a boxwood thats never going to do anything with its life” damn that’s deep. Reminds me of “if you plant ice you will harvest wind”. Very awesome second shelter, I need to add that to the list. I hope Stephanie feels better soon, and you don’t need to spilt up. If you do I am sure you can meet up again. I think slack packing will be good if you can swing it. I will try to send you a little miracle over on Venmo later. Thanks for bringing us along today. I hope tomorrow’s miles are kind. Keep truckin’ and be well.

You can look into getting a Snugpak special forces bivvy bag that is basically a raiin and windproof cover for your sleeping bag but you can use it on nights not as cold too. And they pack down to almost nothing.
I wish my buddies and I did that after we got out of the Marine Corps. when we had less in life to take care of.

Hiking the AT is a microcosm of life. Paths intertwine then lead away, people come and go. The only thing you can expect is change, but that's necessary because stagnation can't help growth. The only prerequisite is to keep moving forward. HYOH, because although we're all going to the same destination, we all have different paths to get there, even if it's physically the same path. You have to let go of what's in your hand to grab ahold of something else. Just from experience, speeding up or slowing down should be reserved for avoiding those you don't want to be around, not for sticking with those you hope to stay with. When you find your speed, they find you, maybe.

I’m hiking my own hike by sticking with these girls. I need the moral support and mental stability of hiking with others after what happened to me. Not to say it will always be this way, however during my first few weeks out here I’ll be sticking with the tram until I feel confident enough mentally and physically to be on my own.
