I'm so glad that everyone is loving this eye look! Lots of people are asking which products I used-it's some new makeup that I'm testing. I applied the whole look on camera and the video will post on Friday January 7th (the day after tomorrow). It will probably be labelled as a "try-on haul" or some such thing. See you there!

Before I even watch your video…my opinion is that smaller eyeshadow palettes have been trending (4 -9 pans) for over a year.

“Collective advertising that we call a trend” is the perfect way to phrase it. It’s not really a trend until it’s so heavily pushed through marketing that we believe everyone is buying it, at which point it becomes an actual trend because the everyday consumer beings purchasing it.

You’re spot on about trends! I would add from the perspective of 62 years, trends are cyclical. My palette is very different from yours; my best colors are lavender, aqua, and tangerine. (Very fair blue-eyed redhead whose hair has turned pale gold.) Every few years, they come back around and I replace things I need in my favorite colors. I no longer feel a panic when I miss out because I know I’ll see them again.

I'm a perfume collector/ a person in "the perfume community" and I think that perfumes did really well over the pandemic and more people got into them. I think the reason is that scent can help with mood, and I use perfumes to make myself happy, comfort me, change or regulate my mood. Also, I mostly stopped wearing makeup and got deeper into perfume because I was home and no one saw me, but I felt comforted by fragrance. I think a lot of perfume lovers can relate. I do think perfume is being hyped more now because of that. You're not imagining things here. Sales went up and of course now fragrance is the thing. I'm immune to mainstream perfume marketing because I'm into niche perfumes, but there are perfume people on UA-cam now who really push buying the latest releases, even in niche brands.
Where I get sucked in with makeup is limited release in luxury brands, esp for springtime because I'm fair-skinned and cool-toned and all these pinks and stuff look good on me. So I want Dior and Chanel stuff really badly starting around Feb. And then they are gone because they are limited! I have had some regrets missing some things but I try to keep it in perspective.

@Christine I am very hesitant to purchase anything on limited release because if I really love it I am not able to repurchase. Even though it may be beautiful, I can’t justify spending on a limited item.

    • @sarahshoxx
      @sarahshoxx 2 роки тому +3

@@Figgatella I don't understand this idea. I've Heard lots of influencers say they are not interested in limited items or they don't want to use it because it can't be repurchased I just don't get that because something else better will come along there's always plenty so there's no need to worry about something being limited.

It's definitely a thing. I run an independent shop and one of the main things I make are weird/unique perfumes and custom perfumes and I've been SLAMMED this year.
I feel the same way, it's definitely a mood boost thing. Even not leaving the house, smelling good makes me so happy.

    my theory re perfume trending:
apparently there's this thing called the lipstick index which states that in times of economic trouble the sales of lipstick rise. but in the current crisis lipstick sales didn't increase because of course not - because masks.
but perfume is the perfect substitute, a luxury product you can wear when starting to leave the house again, giving you a sense of control and providing another facet of curating your presentation to the outside world. scents are so personal.
i know i know, the lipstick index was long discredited but i still like the theory as it makes so much sense to me :D i definitively see it in myself... the more i feel uncertainty, the more i want to buy shiny things to feel a sense of control.

I love that you're contextualizing hot takes within marketing of trends! I noticed that rosey pinks and browns seemed to be really prominent in all of the "best of 2021" lists by big magazines so I feel validated that you've seen it too lol. I think when I can see a pretty product as being part of larger pattern or trend, it really does help with externalizing a desire for the one specific thing. For example I was taken with the lovely looks created with that new ND mini palette. but once i realized that this color palette is just being promoted a lot by various companies, I didn't really care about the specific palette as much as wanting to recreate the looks. Now I have a pretty 9 pan made with my old CP shades that does everything the ND mini can do and more! It felt like a perfect way to start off my no/low buy year. Thanks for all the inspiration Hannah!!

Spotting these trends in new makeup releases hot takes reminds me of the the trains you have mentioned in previous years - like the grungy rainbow train - but with a slightly different focus.
I think it’s hugely useful to identify trends (or trains!) for all the reasons you have mentioned. I also use it in an additional manner: if the thing I’m attracted to is a trend, I bet many more brands will be bringing out the same sort of thing, so I’ll wait to survey the whole selection before making a purchase choice. I don’t want to jump on the first to be released in case it gets better. (And often by the time I’ve waited, I’m so oversaturated, I don’t want the item anymore …)

As someone who loves lip balms I definitely see a rise in releases from brands. It was super tempting for awhile, however, the thing that has improved the condition of my lips and skin the most is drinking a half gallon of water a day. I bought a cute half gallon jug and it’s been the best thing I’ve done this year. I was considering lip fillers, but they are so full and plump now. Dehydration is a hell of a thing lol

What a fantastic approach to a "new makeup releases"/"will i buy it?" video. As for products that need to be used regularly to be of any benefit (like brow serum, lip masks, and skin care), i tend to purchase inexpensive/drug store versions first, whether or not they are of high quality. I use them to develop the habit of consistent use, then once the product has become part of an "auto pilot" regimen for me, then i might venture into higher-end products (unless the inexpensive works well enough for my needs/expectations). My thought is that regardless of how "good" a product is, it will not do anything for me if i am not using it consistently; i would rather waste $10 on a product i don't use, than $50 on a product i don't use. 🖤

I live in Japan, so "what's trending now in USA, and or European countries" doesn't affect what I feel I should wear to be a trendy person, because we have different trends in own country, and I keep myself away from it by being inspired by something else.(That's why I'm here watching beauty channels of Americans) still, it did make sense when you pointed out that seeing numbers of similar products makes you think that's trending so you should buy one or some for yourself. My guards are up now! I'm not going to be tricked by that! Lol
I wouldn't say I'm going to try no buy year, but I'm sure I'll be less buying things because of you!

I have a similar take on perfume. I always try to get the little samples and testers with my Sephora orders and that’s been enough for me for years. It's so refreshing and important to discuss being mindful of our makeup lover impulses. I catch myself getting distracted by sht like a dog going SQUIRREL before I remember that I don't even wear that type of makeup. Glad I'm not an impulse buyer or I'd be regretting a lot. And idk about anyone else, but I don't mind content about "old news" items at all. I actually find them super helpful to hear more perspectives once people have had more time to get past their first impressions. I think quality items will stick around if they're good enough to, instead of just seeing first impressions and then never hear of them being used again. The fast fashion makeup is making a lot of us jaded....

I agree about older products, I am one to take a lot of time before making purchases because I want to know how it performs beyond a first impression. It’s also important to know how a product will perform over time, does it have longevity or will it be unusable after a few months?

I would love a Rare review, because your reviews are so enjoyable in general.
The fragrance industry is definitely about to pop off, and I think it's thanks to the pandemic, as another commenter described.
To my dismay, I feel like astrology is even more ubiquitous these days. CP had earlier had a themed palette with Kathleenlights, but didn't have the little mini palettes (perfect for casual Ulta checkout line grabs and stocking stuffings) until recently. People really do remember that just because something has your label on it, does not mean you have to buy it. *You do not need to buy it.*

LOVELOVELOVE this format for a new releases video! It made it so much more helpful than just a typical “here’s what’s new” format. As someone who finally realized the need for a no buy, this format really helped me think about why I get sucked in from a big picture perspective, why something that as a single release may not interest me but once I see it from a lot of different brands I suddenly find myself wanting. It’s hard to see patterns when every day is a barrage of new releases, so this format really helped give me tools to see patterns and better understand my own desires. Great work as always. i just watched your last video yesterday and i’m so happy that you posted today, because i truly appreciate and love your content. i’ve noticed fragrance and candle videos everywhere on all platforms. i loveeee my chloe nomade perfume and i’m extremely content with it. i was so attracted to the fenty highlighters but i have two and i have wanted to try the rare beauty first, because i can’t get it out of my head since it released. the bliss liquid blush was one of the first ones to release, and i would love to see you do a true review on it because i have also been eyeing it since it released. i have heard that the fenty highlighter is gorgeous. the pantone color is stunning but just not on myself. at all. i love pink but i’m soooo OVER IT!!! i’ve always loved lip balms, like since forever and decades ago from fresh when they very first released, and i’m good with the ones that i already own. yes, i’m very glad that you made this video. it made sense to me personally. thank you so much for this video. 😘😘😘
ps… your nail polish is beautiful.

Thank you! Loved hearing why I shouldn't buy a trending product. Back away from the shopping cart & focus on what I already have (which are super fun products I love already.) The makeup/beauty community needs more people encouraging others to make thoughtful, mindful purchases instead of impulse buying. Keep these videos coming. ❤❤

I love the idea of doing this type of video on the onset or midway through seasons as I feel like microtrends (like the lip mask) pop up more or less by the influence of the season (e.g., brand's trying to sell the summer fantasy of laying pool side with a body highlighter). Also, I wanted to add, as a fellow pale olive, I also recognized pretty quickly that very peri was wildly outside of my color palette!

i got recommend your channel through another youtuber recently and i am so glad i found you. i noticed my implies shopping getting bad while out of work over the the last year and just listening to you think through trends and purchases has been just so wonderfully helpful even if i am not a make up person just listening to you really think about how you are spending your money has been super inspiring. this might be a weird video to comment this on but like i needed to hear you talk out the astrology make up. like that was so needed as i am a sucker for anything in my star sign (also also i would love to hear your thoughts on rare beauty if you want to give them. the liquid blush was one of my only make up purchases of the last year)

I just found your channel a few weeks ago and I am binging! I love how you are so mindful and able to create interesting content without only reviewing new make up all the time. And I love your deep reflection about the products that you do review. It is so helpful and changing the way I am consuming beauty content! I am so over watching new make up try ons all the time, even if I like the personality of the youtuber. Your channel is amazing! Thank you so much for puttting your point of view out there, because I think it is super important. Lots of love from Germany ❤️

Trend I’m noticing: Lunar New Year limited edition releases. I can see how these would be very tempting for people who love reds and golds, or are true collectors rather than users. The packaging I’m seeing is gorgeous.

This video is great!! We are so on the same wavelength right now. I was just telling my husband how I feel like perfumes are super hot and trendy right now, because I have been feeling the urge to buy perfumes as well, and have been feeling interest in them. I just also totally agree with your entire point in this video. Love your content and love your style! Much love Hannah and happy new year!! 💛💛

It's funny because as soon as I saw the Pantone colour of the year, I realised I already had a matte and a shimmer eyeshadow in this colour haha. For anyone interested, Give Me Glow Peri and Wink fit the trend pretty perfectly.

I totally agree with you about the perfume trend! I also caught myself looking into perfumes and youtubers for sure unboxed more perfumes than ever. I also think it is as very "logical" trend because every influencer is so overstocked with makeup and skincare, perfume makes it "ideal" direction as they have "shortage" so to say:)))) Also it is a great opportunity for companies to introduce products that we consumers are not tired of yet, I feel like everything has been released too much in recent years, except perfumes.

I loved this format! I would be very happy to see more videos like this. Also, I feel like the perfume industry went through a mini time of innovation recently. Perfume relied heavily on in person sales and samples in the past. There were many attempts at changing this format in the past year when shoppers couldn’t test in the store. I might guess we are seeing a bit of these creative sparks in the category.

I'm excited for the color of the year! Just in general it feels like I can never find things in the colors I look best in in the cuts or styles or products I like which aren't really things that have ever been trending (at least not that I've seen in anything I can actually afford).

Yes please review rare beauty! Even though i had couple of their mini liquid blushes, I still want to hear about your opinion cause you always have new perspectives that I haven’t looked at. I am not sure if it is still available but if you are going to buy them using your own money, maybe buying small tube of the liquid blushes is a better choice since it’s VERY pigmented therefore you only need a tiny dot for your whole cheeks.

Oh Hannah - you totally got me. I actually have been feeling a major fragrance pull. I also bought the Sol de Janeiro hair oil today at Sephora while I was running errands. I actually wasn't on the shelf yet and they pulled it from the back for me. I feel good about it though - I saw it as an "Early App Exclusive" a few weeks ago while browsing the Sephora app and put it in my cart, but ended up holding off on the purchase. I kept thinking about it which was why I stopped in store today to see if it was available. Hopefully I end up liking it, but either way I'm glad I didn't impulse buy it (which is a habit I've been working on for the last year or so as I try to become more financially healthy). Loved this style of video and I always appreciate your videos!

The fun thing about having a best friend who is very into astrology is that I know my whole natal chart, so I know that, although my Sun sign is Sagittarius, my moon sign is Libra, and my Rising sign is Gemini and my Mars sign is Scorpio and my Venus sign is Capricorn..... and each of those have different meanings for different facets of life. So if I see something I genuinely like and it has a Zodiac sign on it that is even in the top 5 prominent chart placements that I just listed, then I have no problem getting it IF I was in the market already lol. Ultimately, its fun to know your whole chart so you don't feel weird buying a piece of makeup with a sign you don't relate to. But also .... who cares? If you are a Taurus but you love the Capricorn color and all the other boxes are ticked for you.... who cares if its the wrong sign? Especially if you don't care one way or another about the zodiac. I'm right though, right? lol
