The writers know fully well how to stop Tom or any vampire with a stake or crucifix, but they intentionally don't so the adventure can go on and play itself out. More trauma, more drama 🧛♂💗

Seriously, it never occurred to anyone who attacked Tom in the first place? Barnabas isn't a vampire. Then who is? Find the vampire and that solves the problem. Joe, use a cross or garlic on Angelique. I can't believe how dense Julia is.
It is not as easy to find Tom's vampire attacker as it is to find Tom since they know where Tom is buried, but they do not know who attacked Tom nor where the attacker's coffin is. So, they are trying to solve the easier problem first. It is a common trope of vampire stories that only an occult specialist or superstitious villagers know about vampire lore and methods to ward them off. It is also too late for Joe to use garlic or a cross even if he knows about them, since the vampire can will him to throw away those items. If Joe had enough will power to use the garlic or cross against Angelique, he certainly would have exercised all his will power to not aid Angelique in getting access to Tom in the hospital. I agree that writers make Julia dense sometimes and brilliant at other times, but they do this with Barnabas as well.

Sometimes the writers make the characters so stupid. All Barnabas and Willie had to do is affix a silver cross to the interior of Tom's coffin lid, then Tom would either not be able to enter the coffin and be burned by the sunlight, or if he did enter the coffin and close the lid, he would not be able to get out of the coffin the next evening unless someone else opened the coffin. Barnabas and Willie could return the next morning to see if Tom is in the coffin or if there is a pile of ash next to it. Barnabas should know to do this since Joshua had Ben do this to Barnabas' coffin to trap Barnabas inside of it. The chains around Barnabas' coffin were only required to keep others from opening the coffin. (See episode 460)
