- This one was a chore to learn and practice to say the least. Gave myself an extra couple of days to get it burned into memory as it's pretty long, and there's two of em. All told, it's about 4 1/2 to 5 minutes of soloing.
Really wanted to take this one on for quite some time now, mostly to see if it was possible, haha. Neil is Neil, and it's damned hard to replicate.
Hope you enjoy my take and commentary on this classic Neil Young pair of solos.
Cheers, K

I've never understood people who say that Neil isn't a great guitarist. Is he great in the same way that Malmsteen or Vai is great? No. He's great in a way that no one else is great, and as you've demonstrated here, trying to replicate what he does is as difficult as replicating what those other guys do. Neil didn't just play that Les Paul on those early records: he assaulted it. He pounded sounds out of it in a way that no one else would have ever thought to do, and he did it essentially as a folk rocker. That you managed to nail his style here is just amazing. You've just earned a subscriber and a thumbs-up.
I’ve been playing guitar for 15 years and Neil is hands down the hardest guy to imitate. His style is completely his own, and it kinda makes me mad when people write him off as a “bad” guitar player. He knew exactly what he was doing, he creates emotions with his guitar.
Neil is the best
Neil Young is a fantastic guitarist with his very own style. So good that no one can tab it!
Neil Young is one-of-a-kind, in the best way possible. You captured his feel amazingly well.
Hear Hear!!!!! I bet he busts some strings HUH?
Neil plays with raw emotion. Emotions can be sorrowful, uncomfortable, sloppy, but always honest and that comes through in his playing and you've captured it welll. Neil's playing has always hit me in the feels more than anyone.
Neil's guitar opens up the quantum portals
Wow, you played this one very accurate!. , i like Neil’s playing this solo, it ‘s got so much feel, raw but sensitive...and alway’s given me goosebumps!
Wow that was so good..I’ve heard that solo for over 40 years.....you captured the soul of the solo.....very well done..my respect to you. I also love his noise, picking mistakes and mis-strikes , also his pitches and squeals that make the sounds in this solo so perfect.
Just awesome! This just might be the best guitar vid I've ever seen. And your commentary on Neil is spot on.
❤🎉 Wow wow Wow! Kelly excellent job. Just superb I can only imagine how much time and effort and dedication you put into learning this and then taking the time to share it with us. I remember hearing this way back in the day for the very first time cranked up loud and as a guitar player I've always dabbled with this song but never to this level! Thank you so much I'm going to take away as much of it as I can
I’ve been playing Neil Young shows for a good few years now and just want to say I think this one of the best accounts-performance wise and analytically-of his lead playing I’ve ever seen. As you say, many people see his limitations but not his extraordinary strengths as a soloist. I loved your impassioned explanation of the emotional energy he puts into his playing and your praise of him is all the more persuasive given that you can play superbly in so many styles. He is a feel player to the zenith and shows what it’s possible to do if you work devotedly within your limits whatever they happen to be. A brilliant video. Many thanks.
I love Neil s playing. Revolutionary.
You really captured the "beauty of pain" that these solos are for me. 👍👏
Holly mother of God!!!
Oh yeah, I'll always take an expressive "simplistic" solo over a mathematically precise "mind-bogglingly technical" one. I love your playing and I don't really care if it's exactly like what Neil played or not as long as the "message" is there. I actually prefer that "inexactitude" and variation to be honest. On the other hand, your commentary on this one is incredibly accurate and to the point. Great job as usual, Kelly!
Beautifully Done
Perfect. Thank you for playing it right just like in the album American stars n bars.
What can I say about your playing (TOPS !!!!!!!!!!!!!).....................
Great job........
Great cover. Great song. Great commentary. Looking forward to having a go at the tutorial.
Hey man you nailed it absolutly!! I just fell in love with you because of playing and feeling from the very deepest zone/ lizzardbrainmemories, and also what you said made me glad to feel that i am not alone on this planet, that there are still some other musicians - at least one ;-)) who feel realy deep and talk feelings with the strings. Because you are one of those few you can realy play this solo so so good. Love
hi Kelly, I've always loved NEIL YOUNG and over the years I've had the opportunity to listen to thousands of tributes of this splendid creation by Neil ... But your solo is the only one that generates the same emotion as the original solo !!! You are great !!! Grazie ❤ Sandro from Italy
Wow. Fantastic!
those two solos , i aiways feel it in my chest.
Nailed it Kelly.
That's it!! ..THAT'S why I love his solos so much!! It makes me FEEL!!!! THANK YOU!
You captured Neil's spirit beautifully on this solo......raw and melodic. Wonderful playing. 👍
Totally agree with your assessment of his playing and you capture it really well in your playing.
Fantastic solo of the classic...loved it!
Man, that sounds really good!!! Your helping me fill in the gaps, thank you :)
So clean , a very cool job thanks for sharing , get this show on the road man !!
Awesome stuff. The last 30 seconds or so of Like a hurricane are my favourite 30 seconds of guitar ever.
Nice, clean and full of passion cover. Thanks.
Glad I found this - made my feel good. Thanks.
Excellent. We used to do this song. Great video.
Thank you for this tutorial. I’m listening to this song since it came out in 1977, and while I’m listening I hear every note that will come, but it’s so dame hard to reproduce it. Thank you for making the statement of his unique style of guitar playing, it’s not a competition. It’s the ❤ that speaks, and hits you.
Thank you for this! Just amazing playing as always. You nailed it. This *is* my favorite solo of all time by anyone.
Thanks Nathan! Yeah, I obviously love this one myself a whole lot.
Man that was killer
Wow !! Stunning performance / guitar work KD!!! Playing with PASSION as always!! 👍👍 great choice Love Neil Young- I think you pretty much nailed it
Amazing man, well done!
Good Gosh man YOU absolutely crushed that & agree on Neil’s feeling on guitar
Excellent take on the solo dude. Like you said, hard to nail this one note for note. But I feel its not ment to be like that anyway. Its a powerful song and filled with emotions. Even Neil doesnt play it the same from show to show.
Cheers to good music
great solo cover
Ah man, watched this playthrough again after watching your lesson ... I dunno who is crazier, you or Neil 😂😂 As an Aussie, all I can say is that you are both awesome Canucks!!
Great man! FANTASTIC cover, had to subscribe (:
Great job on the solo
Really really well done!
I've listened to this brilliant song and it's famous solo for as long as I can remember and boy do you get it right it has to be played with raw emotion totally nailed it👏👏
Thanks man! Love me some raw and emotional Neil Young playing.
Beautiful.
thanks kel neil is an artist. thru and thru
Amazing! 🤘🏽
I get a wild hair now and then and the past few days it was the song woodstock and neils dirty riffs...one dude on the tube nailed the intro solo. I'd love to see all the guitars parts deconstructed on that tune. there's some sweet rhythm chording I can only imagine is stills and neil is playing little riffs thru out the tune.
anyways, when I hit this video this morning It was some sort of karma I tell you. lol. Your explanative of neil's artistry was epic. neil ina nutshell! long may he love!
Great job. Love the PRS!
Best cover I ever heard of this Song
LOVED IT!!!!!!!
Definitely got some 'live rust' vibes... Keep on rocking on the free world brother!!
wow!
Feeling it brother!!
I just stumbled across your channel, and after checking out your videos, I had to subscribe. We're from the same music era, which leads me to this question. I've been playing since the early 70's, and when we wanted to learn something, it was in front of the turntable playing one little track over and over and over till we finally figured it out. I'm sure you can relate, whether it was a turntable or tape. One song I struggle with to this day and just can't really figure it out is a song by Mahogany Rush called "Child of the Novelty." If you ever have the time, take a listen to it, has a Hendrix feel to it. Then if you wanted to do a cover or a quick lesson...... and I get it if you'd rather not put the time in it. Either way, great playing, great channel.
Hey man, thanks! You nailed it. Turntable and a book of matches for me. Jam those matches under the turntable to slow it down, de-tune the guitar so it was the same pitch, and off I went. Primitive, but it worked. It's all I had.
I love Frank Marino's playing. I'm gonna check out that tune as it's not ringing a bell. Hendrix vibe from Frank for sure, but way faster. Seriously underappreciated guitarist from that era.
Great job. Some patience learning that. I can never learn anything that well. I just end up jamming. You are right, Neil is the greatest guitarist. His emotion with Crazy Horse at their best is as good as it gets. I love that he says "it's all one song." Bring on The Horse!
Had to subscribe as that was bloody brilliant
Thanks mate!
Wow bro OMG the feeling of Neil came through with that song
Great mate!!!
Awesome man..thanks
Nearly perfect
最高のギターソロ。魂に響きます。
Bravo 👌👋
I couldn't agree more! (although wouldn't have thought calling it "primitive lizard brain" guitar playing, but the shoe does fit!). I look forward to the tutorial and will use your cover to get me started! Many thanks - much appreciated!
Awesome. Really enjoy your channel.
Thanks Peter, appreciate that. Challenging and fun to do.
@@KellyDeanAllenGuitar hey - your lesson on Cortez the Killer - freaking awesome. My family and neighbors aren’t happy... but F ‘em. All. Lol!!! More rust!!!!
Rest assured, you did a great job. This is genius as you got the feel and of course the sound of the song. I love this song and Neil's music just for the reason you mentioned. I got already hooked by your Cortez cover and tutorial. So looking forward to the tutorial of this song. I just love what you do and the quality with which you do it. Keep up the good work. Thanks
Thanks very much man! Appreciate that.
when i shut my eyes it.s neil great man
That's what I was hoping for. Thanks man!
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
good job! what gear did you use to achieve this tone? I love the tone Neil uses on this song. I got close to it but just not quite there
i have searched far and wide for how to play watermelon in easter hay and your rendition was insanely good. Is it possible for you to do a tutorial on it?
pure pain
♥️♥️♥️🎸🤟
Man that sounds more like Neil Young than Neil Young!
Very kind mate, thanks!
''Neil Young ,sors de ce corps !!!""
Excellent, but not quite sloppy enough 😂
