- Voice teacher Sam Johnson's reaction to Brendon Urie of Panic! At The Disco's cover of Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody
I hope this observation on how they sing helps you figure out how the voice works better, so you can learn how to make smart choices in your own voice.

"Brandon" lmao what a moron
Brendon not Brandon
It's "Brendon" not Brandon
you should also react to him singing “saturday night” on the late late show ^^ it’s one of my favorite performances of his!
Why did you call him a moron? Did I miss a new bit on him or is this just your delayed opinion?
I think he was calling himself a moron because he said "brandon" and not "brendon"
U trying so hard not to sing along is the most relatable thing

He’s not grunting lol 😂 he’s identifying the sound brendon uses for the vowels
It was bad, so bad, that even the untrained, like me, know its bad. He seemed so undecided on how to sing the song. The entire vocal performance seemed all over the place.
heartlessoni13 It was a very impressive performance, It's one of the best covers of the song I've seen in a while. it's authentic but still incorporates the artist's style. And the change in technique throughout the song is a stylistic choice which can be seen in most of panic's music.
"You can do whatever you like with my image, my music, remix it, re-release it, whatever... just never make me boring."

An interesting point is that Queen/Freddie Mercury never performed that "Poor Boy/Galileo" section live. Ever. The lights always went dark and the studio track was played. So there is no audio/video of Freddie doing it live, so we have no idea how it would actually sound. Just something to think about.
I'm sure i seen on a documentary that Brian May sang the Galileo's in the record
.
Freddie didn't sang the Galileo E5 it was Roger, lol.Roger and Brian still leave the Arena dark and go behind the stage during that part, they never did it a life because queen was edgy when it wasn't cringe.
I was going to say the same thing and of course it is going to be perfect in a studio recording but brendon is awesome at that part

Been here since the beginning of Panic at the disco. ❤❤

4:58 if the E-5 you’re talking about is the “Galileo” part, then no Freddie didn’t sing that part, Rodger Taylor the drummer did. He tends to go un noticed, but he provided Queen with not only excellent drumming, but also excellent high notes and falsettos

The Nosey Artist the best part of that scene was when the chicken looked like it sang ‘galileo’
“There’s only one room for a crazy queen.”
Yes it was. Also the last "for meeeeee" 😅
"Actually, that's a lie. Because it was perfect" hilarious and true.
Dude sang one of the hardest Freddie Mercury songs there is and people on here are being vicious. If he had 20 bad notes, he's still doing better than most of us. Not a fan of Disco, but jesus, it's just a show-cover done in their style. It's not that bad. It will never be Freddie and everyone knew that going in.
Rory Stevens Bohemian Rapsody is something you just don’t cover.. never, ever. All karaoke bars should ban it. It just becomes rape on the song every time. The only good version I heard was Adam Lambert with his huge voice and still, it was not Freddie.
To those saying "why cover it when it was already mastered" I will answer that it's because it's music. It's meant to be reperformed for new generations. Otherwise it dies away. I'm sure Beethoven's ninth was once performed perfectly, and even recorded, yet still it is justified to be performed.
ok but most of us is a low bar to clear
@@joannaklimas-kangas5844 shut up
Brandon has the ability to sing anything just isn't the best at covers. His ego is too big.
I saw Panic! in concert a couple years ago and it was absolutely amazing. Brendon is such a great performer live, I truly think he's one of the best male singers of this generation.

I think anyone who genuinely loves music can see this as the loving homage it was. Urie knows he's not Freddie, just like Lambert (who tours with and was chosen by Queen) knows and constantly acknowledges he's not Freddie. Freddie was just one of those magical vocalists. But Urie does an admirable job and still puts a bit of his own flavour on his choices. Great insights as always, Sam. Man, this is fast becoming one of my fave channels
You should definitely react to more panic at the disco

I saw him and I had no idea how lucky I was... He took his shirt off and with the sweat and the light dude literally turned into twilight.. I didnt know that was a real thing and I kind of just fixated on that 😂😂😂
I'm not a fan of Panic! At the Disco but theres no denying that Urie has a lot of vocal talent.
His fan base frightens me slightly. 😂
Can I just add BREDON WAS ILL WHEN HE SANG AT THIS PARTICULAR SONG isn’t that amazing
It's respectable sure. But he does also always preform it like that... which is a shame.
hannibal jr even if he did “always” do it like that, it’s not a shame because he’s still incredible
It takes an incredible performance to get me emotional through music.... goddamn this cover hit me hard. And it 'always' does. Shame I can't witness it live everyday.
Bear studios a shame? Sure he won’t sing as good as him but he is still a fantastic singer, compared to how Kanye did it.
Nah get fukt Kanye was the best cover ever!
I think his dropped vowel shape in the begining is an artistic choice, he's heavily influenced by Frank Sinatra, so it's that crooner type pulled vowel sound. That's my opinion, of course I could be wrong. Also, that e5 Galileo was sang by Roger Taylor, not Freddie.
I came here to say that about Rodger too, such an unsung hero of this song
Ha ha, I just wrote a similar comment about the Galileo - and the high B, as well. Then I scrolled down to see your comment, and so deleted mine! :D
Freddie was just a beast, can't really imitate him or get near him, but I think he would be honored that new bands in the 2000's are covering his opus. This was such a cool video, thanks Sam.
Yo, listen to The Protomen's Queen cover album. Lead singer sounds uncannily like Freddie at times.
Well this and all other cover are really really good sooo... I’d say B is pretty near
Elton John and Axl Rose killed it.
Listen to marc martel , you cant get any closer to freddies vocals
I feel bad for those who compare him to Freddie. The point of a cover is to put a personal twist on the song.
Also, I'm 99% sure Brendon was drunk during the performance. He is usually drunk. lol
I thought he was sick singing this
@@thenosieyartist6924 Maybe. But I was watching anothwe video of him singing it and he was drinking during the video.
When I saw him live he kept going on about being "drunk asf"
And he was sick.
@@thenosieyartist6924 Yeah, he had laryngitis while performing this
I think my favorite part of this cover is that this could be Brendon in his bedroom. He's just having a good time rocking out to one of his favorite artist. He kept the integrity of the piece and his personality is very apparent.
There's a lot of talk how no one can live up to Freddie but I feel like the misunderstanding here would be thinking that Brendon is trying too. There was so much care and respect put into every piece of this cover that it doesn't sound like someone trying to upstage the original, this is someone having a good time spreading the gospel.
Seeing Panic live was the best experience I have ever had, especially in terms of hearing live vocals. Brendon is definitely such an underrated artist, not even just for the music itself but the skill he has in singing. I'd say him and Ariana Grande are the best vocalists of the century.

I had no problen because Brendan Urie did not really sound like he was trying to be Freddie Mercury. 'Good cover.
Always sing the songs you love even if compared to Freddie.
Honsetly Brandon did it better than Freddie :P
Brendon just smashed a song that 99.9% of people are too scared to even attempt with only 20 mistakes, theres theories of him being ill during this but I don think it matters he still smashed it, he even nailed the super high part that queen didnt actually perform in there live performances, including the super high note that was originally sung by the drummer not Freddie, but people still manage to slate this performance saying it was a mockery to Freddie. (Brendon has a wider vocal range than Freddie did, ha get triggered)
@@mtabby8791 Your comment is irrelevant, shut up.
Yeah so true about Brendon having a wider vocal range, although Freddie is more technical with his voice
Freddie was noted to have a 4 octave range. I think Brendon's range is higher, but not more expansive. Plus also note that Freddie's performance was so much more consistent than Brendon's if you compare all the live recordings. Mercury was pretty much the staple for the perfect male pop rock voice. Brendon's got some really cool style, but he can't wear that badge.
Triggering aside, if you stick to the truth you'll do much better with comparisons.
"ha get triggered" made my night 😂😂
You do realize that Freddy sang and loved Opera..... pretty sure Vocally Freddy was far more capable. Hence why his music is a classic and Panic is sellout music😉😘
Wow, didn't know this version. I tend to react very conservative towards Queen's songs and their covers, but they did a great job with that 'trembling' style the Panic!'s singer has.

Freddie didn't do the high notes in the song. It was Roger Taylor.

Z Freddie could hit all of the same notes as Taylor, but Taylor had a different tune or sound when he sang them, to put it very simply. The video I got that from was Marc Ajax’s analysis of Bohemian Rhapsody.
I know we’re all here for the content but is anyone going to mention how beautiful Sam’s bone structure is? No? Just me? Ok. Back to vocals then.
HulaMommy I second that. Beautiful man, not just handsome, but classically beautiful. To me I don’t really see Brendon struggling to hit high notes.. ik all singers struggle and their voice gets tired but to me he’s one the the top singers in the game and he’s voice and his music he doesn’t get enough credit but his voice is soo unique and amazing but he can hit high notes easy to me somtimes but i do notice when he’s voice is getting tired too.
Ikr he doesn't look like he struggles in Saturday night either
Brendon knows how to control his voice very very well, he would've done things differently to how it should be performed because he knows what would sound best for him at that moment, like j watch beebo religiously he knows what he's doing and he uses different techniques in different videos so it sounds the best at that point

@@nyodeler6647 Freddy was more of a "middle ground" guy, Roger Taylor sang most of the high notes in their songs

Sam seems like the kind of coach that after the worst performance of your life would say you'll do better tomorrow. Good on him.
Do you know that Queen always did the middle part of the song with playback right? Because what this guys did was brilliant.
Queen uses playback for artistic reasons, Roger Taylor who sang the E5 and not Freddie, is a High Tenor and has a better Falsetto then Brandon.
Brendon*** :)
Marti irregardless, they just never sang it. their 4 voices wasn’t enough for that part, plus, they would hype the public for the following part.
Queen overdubbed those vocals a million times or something (okay, maybe dozens of times). That would not be possible to recreate live without a playback.
@@guillemgamell7945 btw irregardless is not a word. Say it with me... Irregardless is NOT a word

Brendon has reacted to some of these types of vids and I really want him to see this one because Sam has really good analysis that he’d probably find interesting
I think it was Roger Taylor who sang the highest notes, especially in the Call/Response section.
During the call/response it was - otherwise it was usually both. For example, both sang high in harmonies but in the “for meeEEEEE” Roger did it was a stylistic choice for him to do it as both could hit the note but Freddie preferred the way it sounded when Roger did. (I think it was Brian May who said this but i can remember lol).

except freddie murcury didn't do any of those high notes live. they were always recorded. difference in talent is there
RM LaBeau I hope you aren’t insinuating that Brendon is better than Freddie
Adrian Lopez oh I am. if Freddie is as talented as Brendon, he would be able to hit the notes in his own songs LIVE. But he didn’t, said it himself. It’s my opinion of course, but Brendon’s range is larger and he has more control, imo.
