Since you have defeated your neutral/park safety switch by breaking the shifter assembly...that of course could be the problem also...wiggle the stick while trying to start and see if that helps. You can also bypass the key resistor all together by getting a resistor reading off of the key, buying a resistor of that value or +-10% and finding the two wires that come out of the steering column at the bottom and go into a connector...put the resistor across the two wires/connector going back into the vehicle harness (not up into the column)...you will no longer need a chipped key, though they still will be used, and your security system will be bypassed (Actually circuit completed with right resistor reading going to the alarm control box so completing the circuit needed)so your doorlock problem may go away at the same time.

I just replaced the guts of my Acura key. My main key just seemed to get tired; not transmit very far, take multiple tries to unlock the door(s), etc. Backup key worked fine. After I replaced the electronic part of the key, the mechanical part had to be re-synched to the ignition, which on the Acura is really easy. At first I thought you had a parasitic drain caused by a defective relay. These things sometimes slowly leak to ground and everything in the car is dead the next time you try and start it ... even though the battery and charging hardware all seem to work just fine. In the Acura it was an AC relay sticking closed which meant I was probably working the heck out of my compressor with the clutch always engaged.
There are transponders in the keys that are coded to the ECU. If they are not recognized correctly, the car won't start. My first Jag was a brand new X type in 2004 and have driven Jaguar ever since! Never a problem in all these years! Love my 2016 XF but they are neutering the new ones with 4cylinders!
i have had a no start no crank intermittently, and then a couple times i've also noticed what my engines cooling was fan running after i turned the key off... turns out the engine is rather quiet and running too, despite the key bing out of the ignition... both issues are cause by a failing ignition switch i reckon
I don't know a lot about Jaguars but recently inherited a 2006 Lexus RX330 with 40, 000 miles that has always been maintained and technically it's not even " broken in yet" . The motor runs beautiful, I had it repainted, detailed, did a complete leather clean and restore. At this age baking in the Florida sun little crap is breaking and as you know especially " Jags" are a fortune for parts on the used market too.I was surprised as well with the" glorified" Toyota parts.I think I could do without some of the luxury and keep it simple. My $.02
Old turntables? You just became interesting . I had a 2000 VDP and I loved it but the transmission went out at 40K and even though it was repaired under warranty I couldn't trust it anymore so i sold it. Where do you live that a cop brought you home to get your key? Don't see that happening to me.
Transponder issue, However since you have engine check light resolve that first. Food for thought Brad, Had a no start prob with my dads car, Mechanic came out with his code reader couldn't get it started. He did say that the code he had was saying the the injectors where in operation as if engine was running, Erasing codes just didn't work, I know its not the same as your problem Also I'm saying it might not work for you, I just disconnected battery for at least a day ,I was thinking Cap's in the the brain/ module holding charge, Connected battery again and it started with no engine check light
since the 1980s, people have been putting old school Chevy V8 with carburetors in these XJ series Jags.... for damn good reason. More computers equal nothing but trouble.
Don't put a chevy in it, the problem is electronics, nothing to do with the excellent engine in these cars. Reset the keys and security system, give the locks a service and lube. Jags of this age can go on forever looked after.
Yeah, people confuse the xj8 with the 6 and 12. These don’t have nearly the same kinds of engine issues as those engines. My engine has been reliable. The car is approaching 17 years old. Of course it’s going to have some quirks.
@@Fixologist1 The straight six engines are bullet proof as well. The V12 was always troublesome though - the cooling system was prone to failing and the engine would cook in a few minutes. Happened to an XJS I had, which is why I now have an XJ6.
dang, Brad. I’ve been subbed to your other channel forever. if you don’t know what Brad is: he can fix anything electronic & I mean everything, so feel confident in listening to him. what was the fix here?
It probably has something to do with the shifter. I dont think it's the factory key. I'll bet the computer is telling the ignition(when using the factory key), that your car IS NOT in park. Try wiggling the shifter in the park position while turning the key. A good mechanic would know. Just call around
There's a chip in the key, that is matched to your car. I think your 'host' of problems comes down to the engine management light which is on. There are obviously some issues with it. Best thing is to take it to a dealer or a garage that you're happy with and get them to put their laptop on it, and reset the codes. I think then, you will probably find that your spare key which came with the car, will most likely work . . .Good luck!
The antenna receives a signal from the transponder in the key they lose their programming take to your local locksmithto have it reprogrammed and it will work fine I a Locksmith and we do it all the time it happens to all car
I love British cars( Land Rover) and motorcycles (Triumph ,BSA) but, they have always had "shite" electrical systems ,I know this from experience as I am a retired Motorcycle Mechanic and occasional classic car owner. P.S. I hope you had a great Thanksgiving Brad.
Your problem is the key module on your second key. You have to reprogram it to a dealer. The gear shift is because your brake pedal switch is faulty. Fix this and it will be normal again. Good luck.
Don't boil the key. Why do you think that would help? Check the Date on the Battery. If it's a 1,3 or, 5 year Battery and the times up, Replace it before it gets any Colder. Old or Expired car Batteries never work any better in the Winter. If it's still got life left in it, check the voltage right across the terminals for reference. Next, check with the engine to read the difference when the Alternator is running. Battery should be 12+vdc if it's good. With the Alternator runing it should read at least 2volts higher. 13.5 to 14+vdc. If those are good, you need to get an engine diagnostics module and read the error codes to find the problem. It helps if all of the known bad or disabled sensors are repaired/replaced before testing. That way you won't waste time chasing those down. Since, everything is read by the EMS or Engine Management System. Eliminating known faults will only save time. And, the actual problem will be more obvious or apparent. Good Luck!🍀
I'm not confused at all. Cold weather is a test for batteries. Just like extreme heat tests your AC. So far this year I've seen below 0°F wind chills. If, your battery hasn't reached it's life expectancy? And, you've had to charge it? Your alternator is suspect. It's a simple voltage check with engine running and engine off. Takes 2 minutes to find out. That's easier than being stuck on the side of the road in your pajamas in -0° weather. The key looks like it probably has a chip in it. You can go online or phone a dealer to find that out. And, why it's not working. Getting sufficient power to all of your control modules, sensors and, accessories might clear a lot of your error codes. Think of them as alarms instead.
@@karenkelly1216 I just went to Wal mart.I had spares made for cars before and they always worked fine.Car dealership is expensive, at least it will work.
MySixStringBichSustain Ok, my problem was that I’m when I switched the key fobs I didn’t put the transponder back in and that was causing it not to start. Thank God.
I'd consider just getting all those error codes cleared. My 01 230SLK has a fun trick of slamming on the front right brake for half a second once in every journey but if you go and get the error codes cleared, not just the main ones but in the sub-menus too then it doesn't do it for months. Could there be a battery in that key? I'm pretty sure not looking at the answers below. I like the idea of checking the physical dimensions of the key, see if it's worn. Looks like a simple resistance check is involved. Keep your lovely Jag mate and get a shitter for just in case. By the time you'd fixed it up so you could sell it you'd have a lovely car worth keeping. Could you imagine enjoying a 300C after an XJ8?
Reminds me of problems with the"valet" key and keys with a bad chip in them. Was thinking it might have been your transmission sensors, but since the primary key still works, it is a bit baffling.
Poor Jag owners...need to have two of them so when one is in the shop, you have another you can drive... see a lot of these problems with these cars...🥴
@@GearGasms Their reputation for reliability has definitely improved over the last 6 years and Jaguars are without a doubt some of the best looking, most comfortable, most fun to drive vehicles on the road. But if I am buying for reliability, I will go for a Merc any day over buying another Jag.
the not shifting is prob the park shift interrupt solenoid, which could be causing the no crank no start issue. Have you tested the battery in your keyfobs? Some cars rely on that to send a signal to the cars security. Might not hurt to blow out the ignition switch cylinder, but be careful spraying liquids in the lock cylinder as it can short the security switch and really cause problems.
I notice you have an engine coolant low light on. I,m at 62000 miles on my 2003 and I cant get rid of this light? Any ideas? Also、I had same starter problem。 Problem was crankshaft position.
@Mark Swarbrick They used to be REALLY British, but now the cars are actually mostly made elsewhere, and in fact are not really jags at all. Take a quick look at what they really are and you might be surprised (and dismayed lol)
did the first key put your ignition lights on .i can see the 2nd did and started it but could not see the first .

Is there a battery in the key that powers the immobiliser? If so, could be the spare is dead. Or if a chip, could it have been affected by a strong magnet on the safe?
Seems to me that the transponder in your extra key is bad. Sometimes you can simply put the key with the working transponder directly underneath the lock cylinder while attempting to start the car with the inop key. It might help narrow things down.
Nice one Brad: Maybe get one of those OBD II diagnostic jobby things from ebay about $10 if you have the port for it. My Ford Focus is 13 yrs old and I filmed it from 99999 to 100000 - still going strong though (it's a diesel 1.8 Ghia) - part of the family. I didn't want to put a link on here but you could search for: MS309 OBD2 OBDII Scanner Diagnostic Engine Code Reader Auto Car DataTester Tool
The back up key probably needs to be reprogrammed. You can find how-to instructions on youtube. Also, since it's a back up key the battery may need replaced. There is a battery in the key fob and possibly in the key itself. If it's the battery it may not need to be reprogrammed. I wouldn't boil it though.
With the key that isn't working in the ignition hold the working key as close to the other key in the ignition as possible then try to start it. If it starts then the chip in the non working key is bad
Brad, you know how electronics work when they get old - grounds go bad. I suspect you have a ground issue at some point, possibly intermittent, and the ECU is not sensing signal correctly. That could explain the low coolant level, low squirter juice level, RFID transponder having sensitivity issues (the possible cause of one key not working) and so on. I'd pull the ECU harness and look for corrosion. I bet you are going to find a common cause for a lot of the electrical issues. Good luck!
Had a key issue similar with my El Dorado... the key had a little resistor bead that changed its value somehow. There’s ways to bypass this problem on Cadillacs, but idk about Jags. Good luck, boss.
Perhaps the computer is stopping the second key from working because its your back key, not supposed to use it all the time. also other problems sounds like your battery is not holding enough charge ?
The key don t works with the remote control ? perhaps the remote opener need new battery ? i mean , if the remote don't have battery , the key only don t work ( like a double check )?
Have you tried programming the key like they do with an x-type of the same year? Open door Turn from 1 to 2 on ignition four times then push button on key then close door I think .. check on youtube. Could also need a new switch behind the lock but I don't know why it would work with one key and not another, that's why I think the rfid chip is the first place to look. There is a youtube of a taxi mechanic saying he has replaced 10 of the key switches recently and it is an easy fix.
Maybe try taking it to a locksmith to see if they can reprogram the key to the car. Or you may have to buy a new key and have it programed to the car. Good luck with it anyway.
Dude you've been lucky lol - those things are usually good for about 60k then they self destruct, so you've actually had a good run really. Trust me it will keep breaking - GET RID !!! 🚙 🆘
Check out the Jag forums - the X300 and X308 series will easily do 250,000 without major work on the engine. My '96 X300 series XJ6 is at 105,000 miles and still purrs like a pussycat.
I had a 1989 XJS and in the winter damp used to get into the distributor and it wouldn't start, I had to put a bag of desiccant in there when I parked it up for the night then remove it in the morning and that solved it, It was a bit of messing about but these things are to be expected with old cars. By the way, Brad what is the purpose of the old 10p English coin under the gear selector?
You got 99k miles out of feel lucky. I worked with an English man at one time, he told me that their cars were made to be tinkered with to compensate for the high price of gasoline. It gave them something to do besides drive them.
Happy Thanksgiving, she just needs some TLC. Buy yourself a OBD2 scanner for your year of car to read codes and pair key to car (I assume you have checked its battery)
@@bebo5558 Why do you object to Brad owning his own and understanding how his car functions? He reads the code, determines what the issue is and this stops him from being scammed

I don't know this car. Does it have a security (or immobilizer) light? Check how it responds to either of these keys. Try changing the battery of the key fob on the non-functional key. Maybe the RFID chip is in the fob, not the key.
True.
Why did you let everything get so far behind on maintenance?
My first Jag was a brand new X type in 2004 and have driven Jaguar ever since! Never a problem in all these years! Love my 2016 XF but they are neutering the new ones with 4cylinders!
The X type... a ford taurus with new body panels.
i have had a no start no crank intermittently, and then a couple times i've also noticed what my engines cooling was fan running after i turned the key off... turns out the engine is rather quiet and running too, despite the key bing out of the ignition... both issues are cause by a failing ignition switch i reckon
The fan continuing to run when you turn the engine off is a feature. Mine does that too.
I would not worry about the key but would fill the coolant. I have a Jaguar car channel here on UA-cam,
Why coolant?
I had the same key issue and a quick programming qith a capable scanner did it
I don't know a lot about Jaguars but recently inherited a 2006 Lexus RX330 with 40, 000 miles that has always been maintained and technically it's not even " broken in yet" .
For the earlier V6 ones and V12s, I understand it, but this era don't have a lot of the same issues.
Wow Jennifer you know cars.
@@Fixologist1 OK boomer
In the manual it says something about what each key. Can do a, b, c
There's no battery inside. There is a passive transponder and yours is broken. A jag dealer can cut you another key using the working key.
Lucas!

Good Luck!🍀
Meant to say, with the Engine running check the Battery again.
Also, the Key Fob probably has a Watch Battery in it. Check that before Boiling.
You’re confusing the fob with the key. Fob works. Key doesn’t. And it obviously isn’t the battery. Engine starts fine with the other key.
I got some keys made for my car and they don't crank my car neither.Unlocks door though.
Hi do u mind me asking what’s the solution? I’m having the same problem
@@karenkelly1216 Go to dealership.
MySixStringBichSustain Do u mean go to Dealership for new keys? Did a locksmith make your keys? The dealership is so expensive
Thank God.
Thank you! You need a mechanic like mine! Find someone who has been in business a long time, independent shop, cheap and reliable.
I mean the key fob takes batteries
There might be a bad transponder in that key. Looks like a time for a new car, take advantage of year end sales if you can afford it...
Poor Jag owners...need to have two of them so when one is in the shop, you have another you can drive... see a lot of these problems with these cars...🥴
The Truth!
Yup - this is how shit post friday turns into scrap yard saturday 🤔
15 years and 3 brand new Jags and never have had a problem.
@@GearGasms then why did you need a new one every 5 years?
Did you have any issues with the steering wheel adjusting itself when driving, if yes how did you resolve ?
You love your British stuff mate. :-)
Jaguar ain't British mate lol - was once, but not for a long time.
I didn't want to put a link on here but you could search for:

The back up key probably needs to be reprogrammed. You can find how-to instructions on youtube. Also, since it's a back up key the battery may need replaced. There is a battery in the key fob and possibly in the key itself. If it's the battery it may not need to be reprogrammed. I wouldn't boil it though.
Looks like my car keys, 1996 Ford Escort. The car is fine but the keys are a lot of trouble.
Greetings from Germany. Hawky.
Ford owned Jaguar in the 90s, they probably used the same key manufacturer
With the key that isn't working in the ignition hold the working key as close to the other key in the ignition as possible then try to start it. If it starts then the chip in the non working key is bad
Either the key RFID has failed, or it needs to re-programmed
it can happen to any car too, my friend's '06 honda forgot both his keys and had to be reprogrammed.
Idk your situation with the jag video being a yr old. What happened did you figure out what was causing the problems?
YOU PAY EXTRA FOR THE LUXURY, NOT THE LONGEVITY, IT IS MOST LIKELY
THE KEY FOB BATTERY ?
Cool Jag! I've got a 2000 S-Type V6 240 HP.
What numbers activate my cell phone in my 96 Jaguar
Did the key get around a strong magnet? Maybe that messed it up.
You never mentioned anything about the plastic chain tensioners which are famous for breaking. They must have been replaced before you bought the car.
Have you checked the rectifier valve? :-p
It was based on the Ford Mondeo in the UK
Maybe need a new battery in your key fob?
The chip in the second key failed. Use the other "original" key until you can get a new one.
[nice, looking jaguar]👍
Maybe try taking it to a locksmith to see if they can reprogram the key to the car. Or you may have to buy a new key and have it programed to the car. Good luck with it anyway.
have you had your key reprogrammed
Dude you've been lucky lol - those things are usually good for about 60k then they self destruct, so you've actually had a good run really. Trust me it will keep breaking - GET RID !!! 🚙 🆘
Check out the Jag forums - the X300 and X308 series will easily do 250,000 without major work on the engine. My '96 X300 series XJ6 is at 105,000 miles and still purrs like a pussycat.
I dated a girl who's stepdad owned a Jag repair place. He did very well for himself. Very.
Very helpful…Thank you
Is 2003 Jaguar electronics still made by Lucas Prince of Darkness?
That maybe a vallet key that only works temporarily
Happy Thanksgiving, she just needs some TLC. Buy yourself a OBD2 scanner for your year of car to read codes and pair key to car (I assume you have checked its battery)
Nic Thomas. Some auto supply houses will read your codes for free, AutoZone and others!
@@bebo5558 Why do you object to Brad owning his own and understanding how his car functions? He reads the code, determines what the issue is and this stops him from being scammed
@@freepress8451 In what stretch of the imagination, did I object to Brad diagnosing his own car?? I just suggested, he doesn't have to "buy" a code reader and car manual to look up the code. AutoZone will scan the car, tell him the code and look up what the code means, for free, then he can spend money on fixing it! I think he's already been scammed he owns a POS Jag doesn't he?
@@bebo5558 You missed the other advantage of owning OBD2 he would also be able to pair the key to his car
@@freepress8451 I didn't miss anything! Pairing a remote is usually done with dash controls, sitting in the car, not with a scanner from the OBD2 port! When I had my car scanned, they read the codes and then erased them. I'm sure they could pair a key, if this was required!
Jag's are beautiful cars.... to look at.
The chip may be demagnetized
Sounds like he wore down the ignition switch. Had the same problem with my lexus.
A no start on a Jag is not a problem , it's a solution . ;) LOL.
I don't know this car. Does it have a security (or immobilizer) light? Check how it responds to either of these keys. You may find, that it blinks with the spare key - that usually means the key will not work. That is my intuition. If it is really this, then you nedd the immo recoded. Take all Your keys and tags You got with the car and ask around for a good mechanic.
Many small (non-networked) shops may check out Your car for free. If You were living around NY, the I would have recommended You go to South Main Auto (check out their channel on YT) :). Eric O. - the proprietor of the shop - is a very thorough person when diagnosing a car.
Jags ...hmmmm Prolly a loose wire in the dash. Entire drive-train will have to be dropped to get at it. Call Hogwarts . Jags require wizards to repair. Jammy pants was funny. Good vid Brad.
It's a black pats key and needs recoding by Jaguar. I have an XK8.
