  • On to the next one!
This vintage 2001 Jaguar XJ8 refuses to crank over.
Maic Salazar ( / @maicsalazardiagnostics ) and I do our best to reach a logical conclusion as to why this European is setting a P1260 security DTC.
    Launch Diagun: bit.ly/2OPJYeWW
    Enjoy!
    Much more to come!

This video helped me immensely this morning. I was using my backup key the last couple weeks after digging it out because my doors locked on me mysteriously at the gas station. Tried starting 2003 XJ8 this morning with that backup key and .........nothing. No crank. Put battery on a charger most of the day. Noticed it was drawing some amps, so figured that might be the problem. Came back to fully charged battery later on.....still nothing. No crank with backup key that worked up until now. Watched your video and the light bulb went on. Sure enough, tried my original every day key ......VOILA!!! Started right up! Maybe these keys are getting to an age where they are going to be a high fail rate part. Pass the word.

I believe that the security indicator light is not at the top of the dashboard, that is the ambient either temperature or light sensor. The light your looking for is a little LED directly left of the gear shifter. Typically people miss it because the LED is finished smooth against the moulding, When you run your finger over it you don't realize it's there

Hey Ivan, it's worth understanding clearlty exactly what the flashing on the key test coil indicates. Tell me if I'm wrong, but the most it can tell you is that the Ignition cylinder antenna coil is receiving a V pulse from the immo module? It does not tell you if the embedded key chip transponder is sending its code even though the magnetic induction from the transponder does also pulse the cylinder coil. There is really no way of telling from the test flash LED whether this indicates just a good pulse from the key module, or a good pulse from the key module and then from the key transponder. ie you don't know if the transponder is good or bad? Do you think that's right?

I drive a Jaguar X Type 2004. First thing I did was get 2 clones of the Key made. I always drive with 2 Keys to help prevent this issue. I do live in England so new and used spares are cheap and easy to get. And I think having only one old Key for your Car is rather foolish.

Ivan Can the Autologic blue box program used keys on these? I know it can with other models and has a key decoder for the barcodes. I’ve done hundreds of used land rovers fobs this way. The transponder is probably able to be viewed in their software too. Don’t know if Keith has t he software or not. Snap on/aftermarket are pretty piss poor when it comes to UK stuff and programming/genuine data- pinch of salt. I’ve also fixed these keys by reflowing the solder on the fobs many times.

Ivan, you need an multi-frequency RFID reader that you can place near the key to see if it is responding. It is likely that RFID chip in the key uses the low frequency radio (the power lighting your LED device) to re-transmit the correct numbers back to the car. Even if you couldn't actually read the data, you would then know at least if the key was dead or not. Maybe this key was dropped one too many times ......

  • @小卷卷-f1y
    @小卷卷-f1y 5 років тому +2

How do these keys work? Is it just like an RFID tag? Can you read them out with some other RFID reader to check if a value comes back? Kind of hard to believe a passive key can go bad... Maybe he put in the microwave by accident 🤣

I have a newer model a 2005 jaguar xk8. You can reprogram the key and the remote controller. There is actually only 1 key given with a jaguar. The other is a valet key green and can only be used in the door and ig ition. The guy or customer may have pressed the valet button by accident and now the regular key doesnt work. I am almost positive that your diagnosis is correct and it is the key. Good job! And excellent video.

Jag keyfobs have a pretty significant failure rate over time. The issue is, I have yet to see a third-party scantool capable of successfully reprogramming, or programming new fobs. There's a million and one different "dances" you can supposedly do if you have two keys, but more often than not, they don't work.
If memory serves me correctly, you can order new fobs from any of the various reputable sources online, disassemble the fobs, and swap the physical key into the new fob, then program the car to accept the new fobs. See if Keith has a Magical Pringles Can that's able to do the relearn, if the launch is unable. :)

[thank, you for you're video. I, own a 2004, x type 3.0 jaguar. I'm having the samething going on with my jaguar just like the one that you're working on. now this is what I did
I, made a jumper wire and put the jumper wire were the starter relay is at then I shot 2 sprays of starting fluid in to the air box. then I got back inside the jaguar and turn the key on then the jaguar started up only off of the starting fluid. so I know that the starter checks out good. everyone is telling me it's the electric fuel pump gone bad. so I did what I could do. so next I cannot figure out what else it could be. I do notice that I got 3 fault codes that popped up on the cluster. so what my plan is to load up the jaguar on to my roll back and carry the jaguar to the jaguar dealership were they can work on it.👍]

This was an excellent video. I have the exact same problem with the exact same car and model year. The Jaguar dealership has had it four times and couldn't figure it out, new battery etc all repairs that didn't work. Still sits there unable to start. For some reason placing the key in the drivers door, locking it and unlocking it and repeating that cycle again seems to reset the key and starts some of the time. It looks like I need new keys, something that wasn't even suggested by the experts. So thank you very much for this video, it was the most in depth and accurate video I have seen with this problem...
People should also check to make sure the light is engaged by the Park Shift as the car won't start if it doesn't recognize park at the shifter either... This model year is plagued with this problem you solved... Thank you!

[back, again. / I called the jaguar dealership and they told me this. The reason why my jaguar won't crank and won't start is 1. check the starter relay. or 2. bad electric fuel pump. or 3. the jaguar needs to be reprogrammed and i would have to give them over the phone some info on the car

    From Jagrepair.com :
"Take your transmission shifter and put it in the “N” position from “P” and try to start the car. The shifter selector switch has been known to wear out or out of adjustment causing a no start situation. If the car does not start put it back in “P” and check the inertia switch.
The inertia switch is installed next to the fuse box in the LH end of the fascia. When activated, it de-energizes the ignition relays in the engine compartment, driver's side fascia and trunk fuse boxes. It also removes ground inputs from the BPM and windshield wiper stalk switch. This stops the engine and fuel pump, unlocks any locked door, and de-energizes unnecessary electrical systems. The switch is reset by pressing down on the rubber cap on the top of the switch. If your doors lock, windows, seats and the wipers work and the dash lights up then all should be good, but if it makes you feel better reset the inertia switch.
Check that you have a fully charged battery and that you have power to all fuse panels.
First check that you have 12V + a few. This is important and should not be taken lightly. For whatever reason these cars are sensitive to fluctuating and low voltage. Depending on where you are you can take your battery to AutoZone, PepBoys or Sears and have it tested. This test is performed using a tool that is not just a volt meter. It examines the integrity of the battery. In most Jaguars you have a fuse box in the trunk, the drivers and passengers section both left and right and two under the hood. You will need to check voltage at each fuse box. If voltage is not present you need to check the fuses in the High Power Protection module."

I think it's unfair to call British logic system in this video, logic state 0=low, logic state 1=high, your reading it like it should be saying on/off. If you read what it says at the top of the column it says "VALUE". I bet if you look at code setting criteria for this it will tell you the inputs are active high or active low therefore what your seeing is the logical value of the input/output. On an active low system taking the input low can actually switch something "ON".

Looking back at the codes I would check the engine ecu has power. Mine wouldn’t crank when the engine ecu was swapped so plays a part in cranking. And you had system voltage codes

Can't you just wire a resistor in and bypass the KTM?

Why not just 'hardwire' the "okay to start" input of the ECU?

2000 XJ8 owner here. No scan tool. My diagnostic tree...try to start after each. 1. Put gear shift in neutral. 2. Check vehicle battery...connections/internal short/correct voltage. 3. Disconnect battery and reset by touching terminal ends. (this "fixes" my no power to driver window/sunroof issue everytime.) 4. Check to determine if fuse/circuit breaker for ignition system. 5. Look at wiring (rodent damage/corrosion) 6. Voltage at starter and starter relay. 7. Tap on starter if it shows voltage...bad spot in armature or brushes worn out.
    8. Call my local independent Jaguar (non dealer) specialist. Boffo Motors, Inc (Jag/MG/Fiat) Gary Boffo, 724-843-3181, New Brighton,PA (3 year owner, have not had to go beyond step 3.)

Since this is an older system, it makes me wonder if the system could be tricked (bypassed) into allowing the engine to start by connecting a test light to battery + and then connecting the other end to the "OK to start" wire, then turning the key to the on position and attempting to start the engine. It might work, but I don't know exactly how this system functions. Could it also be a possibility that the "OK to start" wire is open between the key transponder module and the engine computer?

Joseph Wash I was wondering that too. I thought the key code was also in the engine ecu. :(

does the key have a internal battery?

    • @billyyoder8171
      @billyyoder8171 5 років тому

The keys internal transponder chip does not use a battery. It uses the magnetic field produced by the transceiver ring antenna, around the key cylinder, to excite and wake up the transponder chip inside the key. This magnetic field was seen at work when the key was initially turned on and his tools LED blinked. This proved the key theft module was turning on and energized the transceiver antenna ring. Hope this helps. Have a blessed and safe week.

@@billyyoder8171 oh ok, Thanks for the info. the led proved that the key theft module was transmitting, but there wasn't a test to validate that the electronics in the key were working correctly. I'd love to see what the inside of the key looks like. a spectrum analyzer would be helpful to see what the RF transmissions look like.
