"I heard you struck my son." "Yes sir, I did." "May I ask why?" "Because he stole John Wick's car sir, and uh, killed his dog." "May I ask why you *stopped* striking my son?"
It’s the way the mechanic knows he is safe, he knows that an act that would normally see him killed is not going to have any repercussions on him at all.
One thing to remember; EVERYONE in THAT world knows John Wick, his story, and how he got out and for whom he did it all for. It was THE story in their world for a time. Everyone knew about his wife and the gift she left behind. Notice he gave zero hesitation for telling Viggo about the car, but the dog… he took a breath.
The scariest thing wasn’t Viggo’s story about who John Wick was or that telling his son that John was coming for him and there wasn’t anything he could do about it. What WAS truly terrifying was when John gave Viggo nothing but silence over the phone then once he hangs up the phone’s bell on the mount is basically used to symbolize the death toll for his son Joseph.
I love how when John Wick finally catches up to the son he doesn't draw it out or showboat. He simply strides up to him and shoots him in the face without saying anything.
I really liked how there wasn't any hesitation either when killing Iosef. It goes back to what Viggo said about him to his son. "He's a man of focus." He probably didn't hear a word of what Viggo's kid was saying at the end, because he was just so focused.
@@rikk319 Maybe, but I thought I heard them call him Jovonovich when he went to get his card mended. And it flows better to go with Inigo Montoya as a Princess Bride parody.
I love the meme where Thanos wizard says "My lord we have a serious problem - your snap killed half of humanity; but John WIck survived" - Thanos replies "So what?" and the Wizard answers "His dog didn't..."
Just imagine, for a moment, you are Rolf Åke Mikael Nyqvist (Viggo) and you read the script and realize you have one of the most impactful responses in the movie, and it's just two letters. How do you prepare for that line? Just think of all the different ways it could have been said that would've ruined the scene. Great job, Rolf.
Rolf and Åke were like his middle names (in Sweden, they're not always in the middle). He went by Mikael Nyqvist. But, yes, he was a brilliant actor. His most impactful performance was, to me, in Såsom i Himmelen / As It Is In Heaven. He played a conductor who moves to a tiny town in the north of Sweden. It's a fantastic movie about music and life. I highly recommend it ❤
And it’s a no-win situation. If he gives up his son, he loses the respect of the entire criminal underworld. His empire crumbles and his status goes from boss to mud. And his former partners and subordinates would tear him apart and likely kill him for it. But if he DOESN’T give up his son… well, we saw the outcome of that.
Rough translation of that scene: "Aurelio, I heard you wanted me to kill you." "Yes sir, I did." "May I ask 'why'?" "Well, sir, your son took a stick and poked the Devil in the ribs with it." "... Oh... " SHIT!!!!!
Never, I think, has so short a sentence carried so many connotations. "Oh." from "I want your to beg me not to destroy you for touching my son." to "Oh f-ck, my son done screwed me into oblivion, maybe I can talk us out of this apocalypse, if he's in a good mood, but my son killed his dog. If it was just the car maybe, but John Wick's dog? You don't f=ck with a man's wife, pet or car. That's part of the understanding. He just lost his wife, and my son stole his car and _killed_ his dog... My son is so dead the sperm that created him imploded and I'm about to be sucked into the time vortex."
Vigo went from thinking he's about to give Aurelio a lot to think about on his last night alive, to himself thinking about what kind of Hell he's going to go through to keep his son alive..
I find it odd that only the first set of reactors actually laughed at the scene. I remember seeing this in the theaters when it released, and just bursting out laughing. It was just such a wonderfully timed comedic moment.
It’s more than that because Viggo gave John Wick his freedom from being a dangerous hitman to have a normal life with his wife until she died he Knows John Wick would have taken his car being stolen as a huge insult and having his dog killed it was a belated gift from his dying wife to help with his grief after her death so John Wick took the killing of his dog and theft of his car as a great insult and that he would be coming for Virgo’s son to exact revenge viggo knew that and that was why he said oh because he knew John Wick would come kill his son
You really have to keep in mind, the kind of things John has to do to leave are more than just the little bit for Viggo, it is a long list of impossibilities that John has checked off immaculately. These are tasks given to kill a person, you are not expected to survive. John survived.
to the youngster not knowing this: The Dog was the last Gift of his dead Wife. His Wife was the Reason, why he stopped his Profession. Before he was allowed to quit, he had to do a last Job... for the Viggo in this Clip.
It's not two letters but still one word: in Commando after the bad guys kidnap Alyssa Milano, that guy with the hat and coat says to Arnie something like "we have your daughter, which means you will do what we tell you to do, right?" And Arnie immediately says "wrong!" and shoots the guy with a shotgun.
Here's my question... How is it everyone in the world knows who John Wick is ....accept the son of the guy he used to work for?? Anyone else think that's kind of a plot hole here??
@@shiftybea Exactly. He doesn't even really care about the "business" or the day -to-day of it, because Viggo makes a point in telling him that "John is a man of focus. Commitment. Sheer f*cking will. Something you know very little about. " to bring this point home.
John was out of that world and it would appear it had been for a few years. Viggo probably didn't tell his son about him when he felt it was time to bring Joseph into the business.
Viggo, the head mafia boss of that city, was giving him a chance to explain his actions and save his life if the reasoning was good enough. A good boss. In mere seconds Viggo went from being upset that Aurelio hit his son, to being upset he only hit him once.
i heard you struck my son.
yes sir i did.
and may i ask why?
because he stole John Wick's car sir, and killed his dog.
...why did you stop?
At that moment, Viggo knew two things: that hell was about to break loose and that his son would suffer the consequences of his actions.
With one little word (and an incredible backstory), a legend was born.
10 years later, this movie still slaps.
"I heard you struck my son."
"Yes sir, I did."
"May I ask why?"
"Because he stole John Wick's car sir, and uh, killed his dog."
"May I ask why you *stopped* striking my son?"

"What did he say?"
"Enough."
Such efficient storytelling. "Oh." So much said in one word.
The classical playwrights of Greece strived for the emotion in that simple "Oh.".
Never has a single syllable carried so much weight

That "Oh," means that the conversation goes from a courtesy call to let you know that you're dead to you're fine but we're fucked.
The tone of that simple two letter word delivers more pregnant meaning and foreshadowing than a long-winded expose.
It goes from 😤 to 😮.
Viggo: Why did you hit my son?
(Ten seconds later)
Viggo: Why did you let him live?

Vigo went from
"I'm gonna skin you alive, give me a reason not to"

In that moment Viggo is confronted with the classic dilemma of rule.
Follow his heart & protect his son.
