I am in tears watching this video and reading the research, it feels like such a relief that I can adjust my sleeping positions during the night because I've been sleep deprived due to pain in my hips and knees and feeling anxious about falling asleep on my back as I am now 21 weeks. I had put a pillow behind me, preventing me from falling asleep on my back, but that left me with a lot of back pain. I also did the exercise against the wall with a wool dryer ball and felt a lot of relief from that as wel. Thank you so much! Love from Sweden
I'm at 5 months and started to have alot of hip pain at 2months... I let my seamstress made a small comfortable baby like pillow for my hips and it does help. Also I let my husband do soft massages daily which also help a lot, and I feel better. ❤.. I wish every delivery mom a healthy happy safe delivery 😊
My hip pain literally makes me moan at night. I keep changing positions like every 30 mins.. and it just disrupts my sleep!! And I'm only in my 2nd trimester. Not sleeping at night is a real nightmare😢 I practily sleep proped up in bed like sitting in bed, only then can I catch a few hours sleep
I'm 29 weeks pregnant and regardless of either side that I sleep on. And how many pillows i use. I still wake up with painful hips on both sides. I mentioned this to my midwife and she suggested that I sleep on my back, propped up. I'm now lying in this position and I find it pretty comfortable so far, no pain. Just relief 😊 Will give a review to this position when i wake up 😊
I’ve always been a side sleeper anyway but omg the pain now. I’m 23wks and it gets worse every week. This is my 3rd pregnancy and I don’t remember it being this bad before. I’ve got a bump wedge and knee support pillow still can’t seem to find relief. Roll on delivery day!
I’m 27 weeks pregnant and have been struggling with my sleep, being woken up by awful hip pain during the night which was only getting worse. I’d been using a pregnancy pillow which helped a bit but not much. Since I implemented the things you recommend in this video I wake up pain free the next morning - thank you so much!

I’m 19 weeks and am in agony every night, no amount of pillows or different positions have helped so far. I just need to sleep on my back but I’m still wary
Lots of fantastic suggestions that I'm looking forward to trying, thank you! I'm not sure when you filmed this but unfortunately recent research has shown that sleeping on your back in the third trimester is associated with an increased risk of stillbirth. I was advised by both my maternal-foetal medicine specialist and a midwife to avoid that position and there's also recently been a lot of public health messaging on the topic in Australia.
@@BeyondBirthingPelvicFloorPT I shared a link to a meta analysis a few days ago, but unfortunately the comment has disappeared-maybe UA-cam prevents link sharing? Do you have a Facebook or Instagram page that I could send a message to?
Interesting! I just looked and didn’t see any comments held for review. Anyways yes if you can dm me on Insta @beyondbirthingpt that would be awesome!! Thanks a lot!
They say not to lie FLAT on your back. As long as you are propped up to either the right or the left, you should be good. Back sleeping after 28 weeks was physically painful for me and I could tell immediately that it cut off blood circulation.
It’s hilarious that we give ourselves hip pain(because is the only way to sleep without killing our baby) and then work on ways to fix the pain we just caused to our bodies🙃
I recommend going to a Chiro once a week. This has helped me SO MUCH with pain during my entire pregnancy. I am still able to get good sleep at night, take a nap during the day and I've been working on my feet 4 days a week at 38 weeks pregnant! It's been a lifesaver!
30 weeks pregnant and suffering! I do keep 4 massive pillows around me. My husband says it’s like a fort haha. I’m going to try the ball at the small of my waist. It’s true what you said about sleeping positions… I read not to sleep on my back when I was 4 weeks in so it’s been basically 7+ months of side sleeping. Some days I cry in pain. I’ll also try propping myself up high.
Back sleeping is only a no no after 28 weeks. I'm not sure who told you no to back sleeping completely but I feel so bad for you! Side sleeping for that long sucks!
@@Oliviagold__ you can prop yourself up to either the left or right but yes, they definitely recommend not sleeping flat on your back. It's not good at all. Your doctor should be able to explain it to you as well
What is helping me with heep pain is that my husband massages my hips every night before ned. It helps coz i can start feeling pain around 4.00 am as compared to the first weeks when it would staarts just an hour after i enter bed.
Everyone’s talking about hip pain and I’m here struggling with PELVIC/pubic bone pain when I lie down. I can’t keep my legs together or it’s worse!! It’s soo hard to lie down with this pain
Hello, please talk to your provider as everyone is different. As mentioned in the video, if you do not have symptoms while sleeping on your back (dizziness, light headed, nausea, feeling unwell), it is normally fine. New studies suggest that after 28 weeks it would be preferable to sleep on your side, or elevate yourself with pillows if you want to sleep on your back. But check with your provider :)
Hi Carole! Thanks for reaching out. Like I said, we want to try and alternate between right and left side, and even on the back can be OK if you don't present symptoms of dizziness/shortness of breath/nausea - but check with your medical provider to make sure. If there is no medical reason for you to be sleeping only on your left side, then you should try and vary your positions through the night. No one is meant to stay still while sleeping. Even a non pregnant person would have hip pain if they were sleeping only on the left side through the entire night. And yes sleeping on the left can sometimes cause pain on the right depending on mattress' firmness, body alignment etc. Varying positions a lot would be my advice and using sleep props. Hope this helps.
Maam my fetus kicks me if I don’t sleep on my left side. I can’t change my position even if I want to. I m not getting it what it could be ? Can you pls explain what to do in such situations?
My best friend who is a labor and delivery NP said to not sleep on your back because the baby can compress the umbilical cord and it could be fatal for the baby.
This is true but in that case it would trigger symptoms for the mama such as being nauseated, light headed, short of breath or just wouldn’t feel right. That is why going off of symptoms is OK. But in any case follow your intuition - if sleeping on your back triggers more anxiety than anything, then avoid this position :)
Also note that this situation would happen more likely after the 30th week of pregnancy, not in early pregnancy / second trimester. Check out this study: www.nichd.nih.gov/newsroom/news/092019-pregnancy-sleep-position
