It's cut out in this video, but one of my favorite parts of the ending is Johnny having a change of heart because he realizes his teacher is in the wrong and handing the trophy to Daniel telling him "Hey, you're alright Larusso!". It's a small bit of a redemption arc for Johnny.
@@Kyjohnson1500 Maybe, but remember: Johnny’s built up a lot of animosity towards Daniel in those thirty years, mostly due to Daniel’s success and Johnny’s, well, LACK of.
Who remembers Pat Morita as Arnold from Happy Days? I really love his role as "Master Yoda" in Daniel's life. (However, I do question his skill as a handyman. You saw the condition of the pool and the LaRusso's plumbing. And the reason he was catching flies with chopsticks is because the bug zapper is broken too, and he hasn't fixed that either.) LOL.
I remember seeing this in a movie theater. When that last kick hit literally about 1/3 the theater jumped out of their seat and cheered. I'd never seen that reaction before.
Amazing that a relatively low-budget teen-centric movie from 1984 (in an era full of teen-centric movies) went on to inspire not just a bunch of sequels and a reboot, but also an even bigger television series w/the original cast 40 years later.
14:55: Okay, this may be Addie's most hilarious face yet. The whole "wax on, wax off" thing really does have multiple layers to it. First, building up muscle memory, but also conditioning, as you point out. It's part of helping Daniel close the gap with the Cobra Kai students, giving him intensive, one-on-one training, while they're probably only having an hour lesson once or twice a week. But also, in many different areas, martial arts practices have been banned by assorted governments, so the teachings were passed on by cloaking training in other activities, such as chores or dance. It's also part of what Mr. Miyagi wants to impart to Daniel, the discipline and inner strength. He's not just teaching self-defense, he's teaching a philosophy by which you can live your life with nobility and honor. Cinema Wins has a great video on the film, discussing the idea of fathers and sons, that neither Daniel nor Miyagi were looking for a replacement for the father/son they'd lost, but they were both open to finding someone who could fill that gap. And they found each other.
Hey, Addie. Elizabeth Shue was a sweetheart to many of us tgat grew up with her in the 198o's. From the minute she appeared in BACK TO THE FUTURE 2 & 3, to ADVENTURES IN BABYSITTING to COCKTAIL with Tom Cruise. Even later on, with Nicholas Cage in LEAVING LAS VEGAS to C.S.I. Since following your channel, I think I can honestly say you will thoroughly enjoy both COCKTAIL and BABYSITTING. In fact, I highly recommend t by them. Keep going and enjoy
Mr. Miyagi is one of the best written mentor characters in pop culture, imo. A highly decorated combat infantryman who's wife and unborn child died in the American internment camps while he was defending the country he loved. And so much more that you discover in the following films. Yet despite all that pain/suffering, he somehow still remained a good and kind hearted man. As an infantryman myself, who deployed for 12 years out of his 21 year career, I tend to avoid social interaction unless I absolutely have to (work/shopping). Wish I had his mental strength and disposition. I max out with appropriately faking it for life in general and then going into recluse mode during my time off.
Totally have to disagree with you. The karate kid part 2 does not go down in history as a equal or better sequel. That's reserved for something like the Godfather part 2. Let's be realistic here. the karate kid part three is just milking it a little too much. But I did actually like the karate kid part four a little bit, but still the first one is the classic.
An important aspect sometimes missed by first-time viewers is that Mr. Miyagi's wife and child didn't just die during childbirth. They died in a Japanese internment camp, likely due to poor conditions and the lack of medical care. Mr. Miyagi was fighting for America in the war while his wife and unborn son were locked away in a camp somewhere in an American desert . These camps are one of America's biggest shames.
This. This is absolutely not talked about enough in schools, neither. I didn’t learn about these camps until college. Once you get the whole picture that was subtly alluded to in this movie about Miyagi’s past, it really shows the levels of pain and torment that sweet man endured. It’s horrifying and hurts so much more. Miyagi is absolutely a beautiful character and was obviously written from a deeply personal and real nightmare.
Can’t wait for Cobra Kai! Makes these movies so much more enjoyable. Johnny’s perspective is really interesting to see the same events from his point of view.
Last year I met Daniel/Ralph, Johnny/Wiiliam, Kreese/Martin last year all are amazing dudes/people and very kind to their fans. At the of the movie all the extras were booing Johnny because he was the bully. Johnny/ William mother was like he is the kindest person in the crowd. It’s funny how people back then used to take characters seriously because they thought the actors are like that in real life. It’s just acting lol also the 80s movie Summer School is also filmed at the same school. I watched it a few months ago and noticed the lockers because lockers outside of school is very uncommon. Most lockers are inside. Back in the 80s the film company wanted to take out the drunk scene out from Miyagi of his wife. They convinced the company to keep it in because it is a serious scene for the film
There is a song called Sweep the Leg which is about the end of this movie, and they got alot of the original actors to be in the music video, it's awesome!
This film has a large place in my heart as a life long karate praticioner/mma coach. The life lessons Mr. Miyagi would teach, I passed on to all of my students. Before all of my competitions, we would watch the tournament scenes to get us all pumped up. I cant wait for your reaction to KK2. I didnt like KK3 as much but its part of the journey. I hope you react to Kobra Kai and complete the journey.😊
This is one of the few movies which had a sequel that was equal to, or better than, the original. Addie, you'll love Karate Kid 2, particularly the deepening friendship between Mr. Miyagi and Daniel, it goes to a whole new level. Karate Kid 3, eh, not so much, but if you're going to eventually move on to Cobra Kai, you'll need Karate Kid 3. I can never watch this movie, Karate Kid, the same after watching Cobra Kai. So many parts of this original movie are turned upside down, the bad guys suddenly more sympathetic, everything different. You'll love it all.
Mr Mayagi is the best. I remember him in Happy Days. As Arnold. Funny when he also said, look at all this money (paid stalls for the toilets), I must be the only one who crawl under. 😂
It's such a powerful scene of how much Mr. Miyagi had lost in his life. The truly sad part is that Mr. Miyagi was just 19 years old when his wife died and he never remarried.
Many of the characters from The Karate Kid movies have really interesting and well written backstories, arcs, and future character arcs that are fun to explore. I highly recommend watching the Cobra Kai series after watching the movies to do that.
Everybody loves Mr Miyagi ❤❤ an absolute gentleman, genius and everybody's best mate!! Can't wait for you to watch the others now! Great reaction Addie ❤
This is such a special series to me, I hope you continue it. And whether you react to Cobra Kai on here or not, I very much recommend you watch that as well. It keeps the same heart as these movies. Such a great reaction, Addie.
19:54 The jerk with the camo and plaid is played by Larry Drake, who besides having a long run on LA Law, was the be-sashed Lord in Shindig who had cattle for Mal to transport.
21:35 although mr.miyagi is fictional, the 442 regiment was very real. It was an all japanese regiment in the us army fighting in europe during ww2. There is a movie on youtube "Go for broke"(1951) that tells the story of the 442. Pretend mr.miyagi is the young guy in the back ground and "go for broke" becomes a prequel to "karate kid".
All three Karate Kid movies with Daniel and Mr. Miyagi were directed by John G. Avildsen, who won the Best Director Oscar for Rocky. There is The Next Karate Kid, which had Mr. Miyagi and starred a very young pre-Oscar-winning Hillary Swank. After the primary three films, you should start Cobra Kai, which has begun its sixth and final season. Cobra Kai initially focuses on Johnny and Daniel 30 years later, but it gradually becomes a great ensemble that includes a new generation of Karate students. It is one of the best shows, and I will be heartbroken when it finally ends. The final season is in 3 parts, with 5 episodes in each part. Part 1 released just about two weeks ago, Part 2 will be in November...Part 3, who knows...Spring 2025, most likely. Pat Morita was a stand-up comic and comedic actor before playing Mr. Miyagi. Nobody was willing to entertain Morita as Mr. Miyagi, as he was best known for his stand-up and playing Arnold on Happy Days. When he finally was allowed to audition, he blew everyone away. And when all was said and done, Morita was nominated for Best Supporting Actor for this film. Mr. Miyagi was in the European Theater of World War II with the 442nd Regimental Combat Team, made up of Japanese-Americans who were all highly decorated. Mr. Miyagi won the Congressional Medal of Honor during his service. But while he was serving, his wife was interned at Manzanar Internment Camp, which was one of several camps set up for Japanese Americans at the beginning of the war. Basically, it was a really horrible thing that America did to those of Japanese descent, kind of akin to what Germany did, forcing the Jewish people into the ghettos. Only this time, America didn't just begin killing the Japanese Americans. The tragedy of Mrs. Miyagi's death due to childbirth complications is just extra heartbreaking. The yellow convertible is a 1947 Ford Super DeLuxe. Before the film wrapped, it was given to Ralph Macchio (Daniel) as a gift, who still owns it. In fact, the car was brought back for a few scenes in Cobra Kai.
While serving in the US Marine Corps, I was stationed on the island of Okinawa from October, 1978 to November, 1979. I wish I could have learned more of the Okinawan culture while I was there.
Great video. This and The Goonies bring me back to my childhood. I can truly say “they don’t make them like this anymore.” Too bad😢😢😢 Hopefully we will see part two. Thank you very much Addie😊
These movies are great because Daniel and Mr. Miyagi fill what is left in each others lives. Daniel gets the father he didn't have and Miyagi has the son he never had.
Welp, now you gotta watch the next two movies (fourth one may be optional, but I say go for it), followed by all of Cobra Kai. Gotta finish what you started, lol.

Remember watching this on VHS with crewmembers on a Coast Guard vessel. Everyone agreed Daniel should've bopped Johnny on his head with the trophy at the end. 🙂 Great reaction!
Let The Karate Kid journey begin. This is one film series that I have to get into, since a new Karate Kid (2025) is coming out next year and because I've only seen The Karate Kid (2010) with Jaden Smith and Jackie Chan.
Yes!! The Karate Kid is one of my favorite films! Yes Mr. Miyagi is such an incredible character.. everyone will say to watch the sequels and then Cobra Kai, and they're absolutely right! Lol
Reacting to the karate kid is such a deep commitment. At least 3 movies and 6 seasons of a tv show your fans will be begging you to watch. Seems like a rabbit hole that reactors prepare to go down and some just accidentally fall down. I feel addie is the former. I’ll enjoy the content coming from the karate kid universe for the next couple of months.
This is such a timeless classic, I watched it with my young boys a couple of weeks ago and they love it too. We've also started watching Cobra Kai, which is far more fun and entertaining and campy than I expected. Would recommend.
The even sadder part of Mr. Miyagi's wife and child is when you realize that the letter was sent from an interment camp and their deaths were likely due to the terrible conditions and substandard medical facilities... all while Mr. Miyagi was fighting for this country.
That, and the doctor refused to come. Which I understand happened a lot back then when minorities were sick or injured, as most doctors were white and held prejudices against any non-whites.
@@Thundarr100it was more because of pearl harbour, it created a ton of hate towards Japanese people, also they were at war with Japan so they put a lot of them into camps to prevent spying which I believe she was in one of these camps.
That was among the darkest chapters of the last century for the US was the imprisonment and property forfeiture forced on American citizens and legal immigrants of Japanese ancestry, and one of the worst SCOTUS decisions that upheld it.
Miyagi's pregnant wife was in an American Concentration camp (Manzanar CA), where there weren't adequate Medical facilities available to save her and their newborn son.
Also, great soundtrack. Feel the Night and Youre the Best specifically, but the whole thing is just good. This, Rocky 4 and Top Gun were my favorite soundtracks back then
A seminal part of my childhood. As someone who was bullied by not one but three at once back in the day, you can imagine the joy I felt in the end of this. You really should check out Cobra Kai when you've watched all the KK films. Very well done!
One of my favorite movies. Ralph Macchio as Daniel and the late Pat Morita as Mr. Miyagi were both amazing. One of the Cobra Kai students, Dutch, was played by Chad McQueen, the son of my favorite actor, Steve McQueen.
Thank you for this reaction! I really hope you can watch all of the Karate Kid films; including The Next Karate Kid because it still has Mr. Miyagi only he trains a new student, and it’s the last film in the series that Pat Morita plays Mr. Miyagi. Also if you decide to watch Cobra Kai, not only do you see what became of Daniel and Johnny, but you’ll get more backstory on other characters as well as the origin of the dojo Cobra Kai itself. 🥋👴🏻🧑🏻🤜🏼🤛🏻🧑🏼🌳🐍
9:45 "Did he put that together for you?" Almost certainly! If you look closely at the background of the previous scene (when they're talking about the event), you can clearly see the large metal ring and distinctive patterned red fabric hanging on the wall of Mr. Miyagi's shop.
So much quotable in this. My friends and I have been using for years. Mercy is for the week, Sweep the Leg and Get 'em a body bag among others. plus everything Mr Myagi says
The song used in the tournament montage "You're the Best" was originally slated to be in Rocky 3. It was only due to "Eye of the Tiger" being written for Rocky 3 that changed the plans.
What makes this movie stand out to me amongst other 80's sports movies, is the lovely story of a man finding a son, and a boy finding a father.
Yea I always thought that Daniel was the son Mr. Miyagi never had and Mr. Miyagi was the father Daniel lost.

The relationship between Daniel and Miyagi is so incredibly wholesome. I absolutely love it.
Please continue the series! Karate Kid part 2 is a direct continuation of the first one!
Hey Addie, j ust want to tell you..,, your the best around! Nothings ever gonna bring you down!!! ❤
I can’t wait to see the sequel. Amazing reaction as always.
yes!!! I have been looking forward to this. Please do all three movies and Cobra Kai otherwise you are getting an incomplete story :D
Let The Karate Kid journey begin. This is one film series that I have to get into, since a new Karate Kid (2025) is coming out next year and because I've only seen The Karate Kid (2010) with Jaden Smith and Jackie Chan.
The remake has nothing to do with all 3 and Cobra kai
@@Nightwolf_500 Daniel LaRusso & Mr. Han are going to be in the upcoming new movie.
Such a beautiful, heartwarming movie!
Yes!! The Karate Kid is one of my favorite films! Yes Mr. Miyagi is such an incredible character.. everyone will say to watch the sequels and then Cobra Kai, and they're absolutely right! Lol
[3:15] I love how in Cobta Kai S1, a random parent at the assembly yells out "I heard you started that fight!"
I thought that was Season 3 (Not 1) after the brawl and the parent yelled “I heard you were the real bully".
You are so adorable, Addie. I am so glad you enjoyed my favorite film from my childhood.
Addie-san, I hope you continue with the Karate Kid movies... and then the Cobra Kai series.
This is a wonderful movie, comma, glad you watched it Addie.
If you look around Mr. Miyagi’s workshop, you can see pieces of Daniel’s “shower” costume hanging on the wall.
there was a music video created in 2007 called "Sweep the Leg" by No More Kings, has lots of the orignal Karate Kid cast in it.
This is such a timeless classic, I watched it with my young boys a couple of weeks ago and they love it too. We've also started watching Cobra Kai, which is far more fun and entertaining and campy than I expected. Would recommend.
Ralph actually still has that car, he got it after the movie, in fact it returns for Cobra Kai.
Not after this movie. They gave it to him after the 3rd film wrapped.
FDR’s internment camps.
Yep, just another thing the liberals screwed up.
Dang you really so close to 100k subscribers hope your day comes really soon for you and all that have help you in your channel
Also, great soundtrack. Feel the Night and Youre the Best specifically, but the whole thing is just good. This, Rocky 4 and Top Gun were my favorite soundtracks back then
The song that plays during the tournament was originally considered for use in Rocky 3.
Trained by Chuck Norris
I was rooting for Addie when she said she'd beat up Johnny herself. Go for it!
You can watch first 2 season cobra kai after just this movie
Thank you for this reaction! I really hope you can watch all of the Karate Kid films; including The Next Karate Kid because it still has Mr. Miyagi only he trains a new student, and it’s the last film in the series that Pat Morita plays Mr. Miyagi. Also if you decide to watch Cobra Kai, not only do you see what became of Daniel and Johnny, but you’ll get more backstory on other characters as well as the origin of the dojo Cobra Kai itself. 🥋👴🏻🧑🏻🤜🏼🤛🏻🧑🏼🌳🐍
a classic…the crane kick is forever etched in my memory 🥋
I have an origami “crane” tattoo. I even trekked out to the South Seas apartments when I was out LA for a work trip. 😂
Chozen completely debunks the myth of the crane kick
Johnny is not as bad as you think, continue the story!!!!!😊
Enjoy the movies your watching and reaction. Keep up the good work.
9:45 "Did he put that together for you?" Almost certainly! If you look closely at the background of the previous scene (when they're talking about the event), you can clearly see the large metal ring and distinctive patterned red fabric hanging on the wall of Mr. Miyagi's shop.
When I saw this in theaters as a kid, I remember Crane Kicking all summer.
So much quotable in this. My friends and I have been using for years. Mercy is for the week, Sweep the Leg and Get 'em a body bag among others. plus everything Mr Myagi says
Just from watching this reaction, I think Addie Counts would enjoy these two films: "My Bodyguard" and "Breaking Away"
This movie does such a great job of demonstrating the importance of strong father figures. ❤❤ Everyone should have a Mr. Myagi. ❤❤
Very good job as always! 💯🙂
Sweep The Leg, and No Mercy both huge phrases from this movie.
The song used in the tournament montage "You're the Best" was originally slated to be in Rocky 3. It was only due to "Eye of the Tiger" being written for Rocky 3 that changed the plans.
That song is so funny because it's not "You're the best!" it's "You're the best _around."_
Like, yeah, you're the best until so and so shows up.
The "A" in the bottom right frame reminds me of the Arnold sign from happy days.
