I'd have gone with Teddy Duchamp, personally.
Mom Fratelle was Mrs Ballbreaker from Porkies and one of the sons was cypher from the Matrix.
EDIT: Not Mrs Ballbreaker. My bad.
@@mcoffroadinaz4075Joe Pantoliano is great, and so is Robert Davi, he was an FBI agent in Die Hard.
@@mcoffroadinaz4075 Cypher yes, Ballbreaker no.
One of my favourite things about younger reactors seeing this for the first time is they all freak out at a skull and a guy seemingly hanging himself right at the start and all seem to say "I thought this was a kids movie!"
The 80's were a different time
In the 80s, they didn't have the internet where you could look up every detail of whether the movie was 'appropriate' for your kids. Often the rating system was less stringent, too. Even if a movie was R or PG13 (which only started in 1984), we still didn't know if the rating came from sexual content, violence, or just language. All you had was hints from the trailer, so often kids would see things that their parents didn't intend. Kids we're also more jaded. We saw plenty of dead bodies and violence on TV.
It was made close before the introduction of PG-13 ratings because of Temple of Doom and Gremlins.
@@Cau_No It was actually made after the introduction of PG-13. Red Dawn was the first PG-13 movie in August '84 and The Goonies started filming in October '84.
Fake a suicide at the beginning of the film in a kids film. Bold move cotton
@@WolfPlaysGames2 Kids are far more jaded today, everything and anything I had saw by the age of 14 back then my son had been exposed to by about the age of 10 thanks to the internet. Even if you go to every length to protect them at home they will still see it on someone else's phone at school - sex, gore, you name it..
This is one of those movies that you watched as a kid that can do no wrong no matter how old you get.
Neverending Story is another.
They're connected, musically, too. I've even seen a trailer for The Goonies that has the Neverending Story music in it. I wonder if it was accidental. They're quite similar, from a music theory perspective.
I imagine you know which two musical compositions I'm referring to.
I'd throw Stardust and The Princess Bride in to that mix too.
@@jedislap8726 Labyrinth, Explorers, Flight of the Navigator, etc.
i was 11 in 1985 when I saw it and 50 when I saw it again this week. movie never gets old.
I'm almost 60 and I always feel like a kid again each time I watch this!
"Hey you guys!" was Sloth repeating a catchphrase from "The Electric Company" TV series of the 1970s. The movie contains a number of pop cultural references that go over the heads of young audiences today.

And the accompanying song was from the Erol Flynn film Captain Blood from 1935.

FINALLY!!!!!!! This movie was a definition of my childhood
Jeff Cohen, who played Chunk, became a lawyer and negotiated the contract for Ke Huy Quan‘s Academy Award winning role in „Everything Everywhere All At Once“, which is why Ke thanked him in his acceptance speech, and I believe he ended with „Goonies never die“.
Most of the child actors seem to have stayed in contact and were very happy for him winning.
Ke‘s parents didn‘t allow him to swear, which is why he says „holy S-H-I-T“.
The dead body was one of Steven Spielberg‘s go-to stuntmen, and can be seen, e.g., in E.T. when the kids on bikes drive over the police car.
The audio commentary on the DVD is very interesting, because it occasionally shows the actors together with the director, and they really managed to get all the former child actors together, but Sean Astin had to leave early.
Someone mocked the special effects of Mikey lining up the doubloon with the landscape: „Mr. Donner you mad Superman fly, what‘s up with this bluescreen?“
Yep on the dead body/stuntman. He was the guy in the rowboat that gets his leg chomped in Jaws. "Hey you guys ok over there?"
Yeah his name is Ted Grossman
For me, as these actors were growing up and getting more mature roles, I too was getting older, not necessarily more mature though.
I don’t know if you knew this, but “HEY YOU GUYS!” was in the the intro to “The Electric Company”, a PBS show very important to my generation, Gen-X
Oh man, the Electric Company.... that name brings back memories!
Thank you!! When she said that in intro, I was like wait a minute... that's from somewhere else, originally. Could not rmbr where 😅 I too loved The Electric Company
Thanks for telling her so I didn't have to, lol.
Yep, glad to see someone mentioned The Electric Company.
Salude!
Came here to say this. I think a lot of us 50-somethings owe huge parts of who we are to The Electric Company. I remember long before the goonies, storming into the house after a long day of play, screaming HEY YOU GUYS! Or going to my grandparents for sunday dinner and racing my sister to the door so I could HEY YOU GUYS! them before she got the chance.
Now to rewatch Deadpool 2, just to hear Wade call Cable "One-eyed Willie"
And Thanos.
@@davelister2961 the "one-eyed willie" reference was far more epic....
The Thanos was good. But, with One Eye, you had to go way back, and have watched The Goonies a thousand times to catch it, immediately
Zip it Thanos lmao
One-eyed willy is a euphemism for a penis and predates the goonies by generations.
Lol when the girl say I don't know if it's an A sharp or a B flat, they are literally the same note.
The older Fratelli brother, who sings opera... was Special Agent Johnson in "Die Hard"
The younger Fratelli brother, the one with the glasses... was the guy who betrayed Neo in "The Matrix".
Ke Huy Quan who played Data would later go on and win a Oscar for best supporting actor for 2022's Everything Everywhere All at Once, and the actor, Jeff Cohen who played Chunk is now a entertainment lawyer and Ke's lawyer.
My friends and I saw this in the theater when we were the same age as the kid characters so this was a magical movie for us! The fact that we played Dungeons and Dragons and spent our time outside roaming through the forests (having 'adventures') where we lived, just made this movie even more special to us.
It remains a top 3 movie for me today, 39 years later. Thank you Addie for checking this one out!!
Me too. 1984. Such a great year for movies. I came out the theatre wanting to be a Goonie 😂
"It's our time down here! That's all over when we ride Troy's bucket!"
My friends and I still use the term "Troy's bucket ride" whenever someone gives up or sells out to The Man.
I find it interesting that this, Short Circuit, Kindergarten Cop, and Free Willy all take place in the town of Astoria.
I knew Kindergarten Cop is based there, but not Short Circuit or Free One-Eyed Willy, it's an interesting little town that gets mentioned a lot for it's size. In Band of Brothers there's a scene where Malarkey runs into an American who was fighting for the Germans due to his ancestry and they hit it off because they are both from Oregon, one from Eugene and the other from Astoria.
When I was in college, I met a guy on the message board that went to Astoria high school and was a photographer part time.
He flew out to a meet and greet and he brought us some awesome photographs of Cannon Beach.
Love this movie.
If you think about Sean Astin’s career starting here, a mid period hit with “Rudy”, an unforgettable role as Samwise, and then as Bob in Stranger Things, he’s had an incredible career.
Also some iconic voice roles.
He'll always be Rudy to me
Rudy, Rudy, Rudy!
The scene under the well is why I knew Sean would be an amazing Samwise. He could deliver an incredible heartfelt speech from such a young age

Fun fact, Spielberg hid the ship from the cast until they came out of the tubes and saw it for the first time. Those were their natural reactions.
Spielberg did do that, but Josh Brolin ruined the original take with a curse word, so they had to re-shoot and act anyway.
@@cobrian45Josh? I thought it was Corey.
sadly it was a fully functional sail ship, did any other studio or boat companies want to buy it?nope, so it was actually cut into timber and what not!so sad!
It was actually Richard Donner who did that, since he was the director (though Spielberg reportedly did direct some scenes, just not that one).
@@Osprey850 uh, I can't believe that. Never heard that. Highly doubt it. Sorry.
Ma Fratelli was played by the fantastic Anne Ramsey. She plays an equally objectionable mother in "Throw Mama From The Train".
Please watch "Harry and the Hendersons" (1987). It's one of my favorite childhood movies.
#HarryAndTheHendersonsForAddieCounts
I LOVE HARRY! 🥰
Great choice 👍
That was known as Bigfoot and the Hendersons in the UK, which is ironic as it is usually European movies that get a dumbed-down name for their US release. On top of the irony it was also a silly move for the distributor since back in the 80's a bigfoot wasn't a very well known mythical creature outside of North America so the title went from "Hmm, I wonder who or what this Harry thing on the cover is?" to "What the fuck is a bigfoot? and am I supposed to know?"
This gives context to Deadpool calling Josh Brolin "One-Eyed Willie".
The greatest thing about being born in 1974 was growing up in the 80s. I was 11 when my pops took my brother and I to watch this in the theaters❤. Movies, television , music, fashion, toys, the pop culture.... For a kid, the 80s were the best. Long Live Generation X!😎
I was born in 1980 but my sister was born in 1971 and she would drag me everywhere so as much as I enjoyed the 90's I consider myself a young Xer because I was always being fed her movies and music. Kids in high school thought I was weird for preferring Weird Science and Tears for Fears over the contemporary shit they liked. 😁
@krashd I think 1980 tends to be included in Gen X. I was born in 1976 and my sister was born in 1980, and we're both pretty much Gen X kids.

They built the pirate ship for real, and the reactions of the kids when they see it are genuine. After the movie was finished, they offered the ship to anyone who could take it, but nobody wanted it, or could house it, so it was eventually destroyed.
When Sloth rips off his shirt to reveal the Superman T-shirt, the music that plays, is the theme to the 1978 Superman movie, also directed by Richard Donner.

The Goonies is the peak of American Cinema
As a kid of the 1980s, the phrase (Hey, You Guys) comes from a popular PBS kids show called [The Electric Company]. That's how they started the show every day. Morgan Freeman was a cast member of the show.
This was one of the seminal films of my childhood. We quoted this at school for years afterwards and I still work in the occasional Goonies reference today.
Ke Huy Quan (Data) was also in the recent Loki season 2, as Oraborus (OB) the guy down in the tech room.
(in response to the cold open) HEY ADDDDDDIIEEEE! After TWO YEARS of waiting, we finally have your reaction to The Goonies (1985). You did say that it was one of the movies that Jeremy wanted you to watch, and now we're finally here. I own the movie on DVD and I STILL plan on watching the movie, eventually. BTW, Richard Donner (RIP) directed the movie, while Steven Spielberg was executive producer. Always remember, Goonies never say die.
Warner Bros produced and Richard Donner directed Superman as well as The Goonies, so there's a nice nod with the theme and everything in this!
"Hey You Guyyys!" Was the opening of the kids show The Electric Company, which is where they would have heard it first.
11:50 Apple ice cream.... Grape too... I was a kid back then, and never had those...
Apple ice cream is yummy. I've never heard of grape, except grape sherbert. There's a champagne grape sherbert that's just out of this world. Not ice cream, though.
The apple ice cream I knew growing up was more accurately called apple pie- apple, little bits of crust, and the spice. There were a couple brands that made it, and depending on who's it was it was "apple" or "apple pie".
A fun film. The actor playing the “Evil mother” role was at her absolute best in “Throw Momma from the Train” with Danny de Vito and Billy Crystal.
Fun fact - Sloth was played by NFL defensive end and all round bad ass John Matuszak. He went to a rival high school of my dad's, where they played basketball against each other a number of times. My dad's big claim to fame is they beat them in a big christmas tournament, so my dad trashed talked him with a sarcastic "merry christmas John" as they were walking off the court. Per my dad, John (who was already a brick house of a human) responded by taking a swing at him, nearly knocking him out.
All he said about it was "yeah, in hindsight that was a really stupid idea....."
Your dad should've shouted "Hey, you guys! Merry Christmas!"
The scene where they see the ship is their actual first time seeing it. Those are genuine reactions.
Perfect movie! Except for one part. When she played the organ she said she didn't know if it was an A# or a Bb. That's the same note but functions differently. Yeah. I'm a music nerd 😭
I straight-up wore out this VHS, and thankfully we had a back up. I used to be able to quote all of Chunk's interrogation misadventures. I'm so glad you enjoyed this movie so much!
Also, I'm asian, and seeing Data be such a great character was awesome as a kid. And I remember my mom just non-stop laughing every time he was on screen.
I _hated_ Short Round in Indiana Jones 2. But then I hated the whole movie. But I loved Data in this. Maybe because I could relate to him, even though I'm (whisper it) white.
A kids' movie that begins with a mock hanging, jail break, shoot-out and car chase. Gen-X rolled hard, there's a reason we're often referred to as "the feral generation".
Yeah, I was laughing when she thought that the real treasure would be the friends we met along the way. A bit, but ACTUAL TREASURE! We were not happy with just the sappy.
And movies like Heathers got filed under comedy/thriller.
The ending (beach) was shot at Goat Rock in California. I was lucky enough to be living about a mile away during most of the pandemic. Spent a lot of time hanging out there when it was open.
"Hey you guuuuys" is Sloth referencing the 70s kids PBS TV show The Electric Company (which is screamed by a kid in the intro). Morgan Freeman was on that show, and I think it also had the first live action Spider-man. Sloth watches a lot of TV 😂
Were gonna turn it onnnn

You may already know this, but this movie features an early performance from future Academy Award winner Ke Huy Quan ("Everything Everywhere All At Once"). Also, the "Hey, you guys!" line originally came from the kids' public television show "The Electric Company."
He thanked Jeff Cohen (Chunk) in his acceptance speech, as Jeff is now his lawyer and negotiated his contract for that movie.
"Hey You Guys!" I loved The Electric Company as a kid. I remember watching specific episodes in my reading class in elementary school as well as watching it on PBS at home. Still great watching it now
The Goonies is a classic!
The ship is an actual full-size mockup. They kept the kids from seeing it until they saw it for the first time in the movie. The director wanted their genuine reactions. The only problem was that Josh Brolin's genuine reaction was to yell "holy shit!" So, they had to reshoot it.
"Ayyy youu GUUYYYS!"
"HEY YOU GUYS!!!" Came from a PBS Educational program. From a black screen you'd suddenly Hear Rita Moreno Scream "HEY, YOU GUYS" and that let you know the fun was beginning! Another one of their Cast members was a young Morgan Freeman.
"What a good evil laugh!"
Those of us who grew up on Goonies know not to trust Joe Pantaliano and Robert Davi 😉
Both great actors, they are so funny and cartoonishly villainous as the Fratelli bros. Their scenes with Jeff Cohen (Chunk) are hilarious as they try not to crack up.
One was Special Agent Johnson in "Die Hard" and the other... I can't remember his name but he's the guy who wanted to be blue pilled in "The Matrix"

Hey you guyyyyssss!!!
Fun Fact 01: They built a full size pirate ship for this movie and the kids were not allowed to see it ahead of time. Their reaction in the movie is their actual reaction seeing it for the first time.
This is Sean Astin, Josh Brolin & Kerri Green first movie in their entire lives.
Interesting that Kerri would co-star with Corey Haim (in Lucas) before Feldman did (Lost Boys)
And what bothers me is that I know Sean and Josh as the children of John Astin/Patty Duke, and James Brolin, respectively. Every time I see Josh Brolin, it strikes me how much like his dad he looks, and I flash back to "Marcus Welby MD" (kind of the opposite of "House MD"...)
You watched another great one from my childhood, Addie. Glad you had so much fun with it!
Just to let you know about the pirate ship: We saw it drifting out to sea at movie's end, but it didn't actually stay out there. I haven't read it personally, but according to Wiki, the novelization of the film goes into more detail about the aftermath of the Goonies' adventures.
Because it was a danger to commercial shipping, Willy's ship was eventually brought to shore by the U.S. authorities -- along with all the treasure on board. And from that point on, the Goonies' happy ending got even happier, if you can believe it!
You know, when we say “they just don’t make ‘em like that anymore”, this is pretty much what we mean. Memorable characters, a wholesome story, hilarious villains and an adventure you’ll never forget.
Ever heard of Stranger Things? We do make them like they used to be and occasionally even better. Dont be a cynical old fart.

The aesthetic of season 1 came directly from this and from Stephen King's It. The 80s kids on bikes, doing adventure stuff. They were probably thinking about the bike chase in ET as well.
I'm on your side, though. Stranger Things is great. But they do deliberately reference 80s movies. There were Easter eggs that people were making videos about for years. It was part of the excitement for a while.

The score for this film is just so incredible. Love the new intro!
The rule of thumb - if you want to keep yours - is not to touch dynamite, like ever. The nitroglycerine in it becomes unstable when improperly stored. The brother of the inventor of dynamite, Alfred Nobel, died in an explosion in Stockholm along with others, involving nitroglycerine. Old dynamite can go off from fire or impact. In old comedies all explosives were marked TNT, whether it was actual dynamite, TNT or black powder but real TNT is actually more stable than the other two, and it has to be properly detonated before going off. Safer, in a way. The old film 'Wages of Fear' and the 1970s remake 'Sorcerer' with Roy Scheider are nail-biting thrillers with the theme of handling explosives.
Professor Arnst taught me that lol
There was an old western... "The Professionals" I think... where the dynamite "sweated"... the guy handling it (Burt Lancaster?) wiped it off with his finger, flicked it and there was a loud *crack* !.
when you watch this movie, every character is your favorite character -- also thx, this was a lot of fun! great reaction!

Chuck getting caught again by the Fratelis has got to be the worst luck in cinema history 😅😅😅
Notice Jake was singing but not in the mirror. Also Chunk never heard Jake sing before then.
If you look, when the dead guy in the freezer starts to fall onto Chunk , he starts to break and smile.
Now you know why Thanos was so screwed up in the head. He had to ride a girl's bike and got driven off the road.

This movie is almost 40 years old and I still enjoy watching it to this day. It’s weird how a movie can have that it factor that makes it so endearing over the passage of time.
Great reaction Addie!
My movie theater was having a Tuesday night classic showing of this movie and I feel so blessed to have been able to see it on the big screen, I can only imagine the theater full of laughs in the the 80s. Great reaction, and I’d have to say I resonate with Mikey more, but the whole cast is perfect.
This is one of my favorite movies ever. Got my kids hooked on it when they were both little and now it is one of their favorite movies also.
One of the all time greats!
I was 12 when this came out. It was AWESOME as a kid especially when you're watching people around your age. They took what it was like being a kid during this time and turned it up to 11 😂
My grandparents took me to see this in the theater and everyone had an awesome time with it! I've always wanted a Part 2 to this film where the grown up actors return to their roles and they can go after the pirate ship that sailed away where they run into all new challenges as they come back together after having drifted apart for decades. This film is such a fantastic kids adventure movie that it deserves a part two.
Saw this for the first time when I was in 7th grade and have loved it ever since. Such a great movie and a quintessential '80s phenomena when it happened. Everybody has wanted to do a sequel most especially Sean astin and from I understand everybody's on board with it they're just trying to get everything together. You probably know by now that the act of the played data won an Oscar last year, and that chunk grew up to be an entertainment lawyer and was actually data's lawyer. They've been friends ever since.
Iconic movie, hits me just in my childhood
I was born in 1984 and this film was a big part of my childhood, along with Indiana Jones, Flight of the Navigator, Short Circuit, Batteries Not Included, Gremlins, Home Alone, Critters, Romancing the Stone, Cocoon, Explorers, Three Men and a Little Baby, ET, Lost Boys, and many more.
That was one of my favourite movie as a kid, and still is. The 80's were such a great time for hollywood that still today they are doing remakes of "old" movies.
This and the Sandlot has made my weekend better, which I desperately needed. Thanks!
One of my favourite childhood movies along with Back to the Future and still love it. Me and friends as kids always wanted to be The Goonies 😂
Ahh, the summer of '85. I had just turned 13 and went to see this followed by Back to the Future a few weeks later... best summer ever!!
