It's crazy to think that Ace Ventura, The Mask, and Dumb&Dumber all came out in the same year. 1994 was an amazing year for movies in general but Jim Carrey was crushing it like no other
This movie's script was written EXCLUSIVELY for Jim Carrey. When Carrey read it he said "This seem like the perfect script for me." The writer said something like "I hope so, I had you in mind so if you said no to this we'd be in trouble."
Little fact The big teeth The Mask had were only supposed to be used in silent scenes, but Jim Carrey learned to talk with them in He also saved them a fortune in CGI because of how much he could do with his face
Clark even stole this line in Lois & Clark for his first real romantic date with Lois. He spun into multiple nice suits until he found the one he wanted, said, "Sssssssmokin'!" and then raised his leg and zipped away just like the Mask.
When this came out, I misheard him and thought he said "Spoken". I had no idea what he meant by that. If you listen to his pronunciation, you can almost hear a "P" sound.
Addie in the lore of “The mask” comic, the powers basically let you do anything you want as long as you find it humorous. Since in the movie Stanley likes watching cartoons, he becomes a real life cartoon.
In the original comic, The Mask was much more violent and nihilistic, it was Jim Carrey and the director Chuck Russell who brought in the homages to classic Looney Tunes… And as you wrote in the title, Jim Carrey is perfect for this role 🤩
@edwardthompson4600 I doubt it'll happen, the comic's too niche to bank on it as a selling point, and people would see a dark remake as trying to be edgy and reject it on concept.
All of the cartoon effects are specifically in the style of the great cartoonist Tex Avery. The "Cuban Pete" number is a song that Desi Arnaz, as Ricky Ricardo, had performed on an episode of I Love Lucy; I understand that he had previously performed it in a movie in the late 40's.

I say this every time because it STILL blows my mind. Jim Carrey just exploded out of nowhere. The Mask, Ace Ventura AND Dumb and Dumber all released in 1994. That's more success than some actors entire careers in one year! Not to mention Cameron Diaz is absolutely stunning in her first movie 👀
He wasn't from "out of nowhere," he was the token white guy and most talented cast member of "In Living Color" for four years before this movie came out.
Addie, you are just rolling with the 90s nostalgia! Haven’t seen this one in so long and it brings back great memories…this was Carrey’s second big hit of 1994, came out after Ace Ventura but before Dumb & Dumber
Milo's name was Max. And this movie was the closest thing to a hit that he did. He was such a great actor, I'm surprised he didn't get more work. He improvised the biting the frisbee scene, and not letting go.
Originally, the VFX artists were worried about the amount of effects that would be needed to "animate" Jim Carrey's movements as The Mask, but Carrey ended up doing a lot of the movements on his own which saved them money. All they had to do was slightly alter him for cartoony effect.
according to Lore, the mask changes the wearor into their inner character. for example: Stanley a Cartoon character, Dorion a Demon & Milo a.... Cartoon Dog

Bonus Fact: Studebaker's first modern automobile factory was established in my hometown of Hamilton, Ontario in 1947, in an anti-aircraft gun plant purchased from the Canadian government.
Ace Ventura 1& 2, bruce almighty, liar liar, Me Myself and Irene. All must see Jim Carrey movies. Also the live action How the Grinch Stole Christmas, but thats for the holidays.
Hey, Just you know, the name of the dog that played Milo is Max. Jim Carrey loved working with the dog so much that he adopted a Jack Russell after the film was made.
And just a few years later, Jim Carrey had another great dog co-star, Max, in "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" (while wearing another green mask, oddly enough).
Years ago, when this movie came out, I had a friend who was getting married in Mexico City. On my flight there, the plane played this movie in Spanish. The scene with the dog accidentally getting the cheese instead of the keys didn't survive translation. "No queso, la llaves!" I had already seen the movie in English, so I knew what the joke was, but if anyone was seeing it for the first time, I wonder what they thought of that.
@@randocalrissian1980 Well if it was found out what she did she can pay that 100K in legal fees when she's in court for almost getting a guy killed. Wasn't so worth it then.

I have no idea how much they promoted it in the US, but in my country they went wild with the promotion for this movie. Terminator 2 and Jurassic Park levels of wild.
There is a sequel to this film starring Jamie Kennedy that was made a decade later. It’s really weird, Jamie Kennedy finds the mask and gets his wife pregnant while wearing it and the child is born with the mask’s powers. Alan Cumming plays Loki who is looking for the mask and his father Odin is played by Bob Hoskins (who was Eddie Valiant in Who Framed Roger Rabbit). The only returning actor from the first one is Ben Stein who was the guy that Stanley visited to get his professional expertise on the mask.
Arguably Carrey's finest hour showing his versatility in slapstick as well as dancing like a demon. The salute to Tex Avery 'toons is the cherry on the top and nice job Ads re: Jessica Rabbit vibes on Cameron Diaz' introductory role. Sadly Richard Jeni committed suicide :(. And yep Milo is the true star of the film D:
Check out the movies Major Payne(1995), The Nutty Professor(1996), Richie Rich(1994), Austin Powers: International Man Of Mystery(1997), and Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me(1999).
Is fun to think that Jim Carrey with his face wrap powers save a lot of money for the special efects departament, much more than he was payed for the role on the movie
Yes! That’s what makes him the best comedian ever. It amazes me how stupid alot of people are… because they just dismiss him as “just another comedian.” Uh… no he’s not! He can do physical things that no other person can do
Another fun film with a dog character is "K-9" (1989) starring Jim Belushi. A police detective is reluctantly partnered with a police dog with a mind of his own. Sort of like detectives Riggs and Murtaugh, they just don't get along.
I would've loved to have seen how Jim Carrey would do playing as Dr. Evil in Austin Powers if he had taken the role since he killed it as Dr. Robotnik in Sonic.
Yeah, I heard about that… Mike Myers wanted him to play Dr Evil. But he couldn’t find another comedian/actor to play him so he just said “screw it, I’ll just play him too”
Dogs are pretty much always cute in movies but Milo actually really was a good little actor too ! (a _very_ silly movie but part of Jim Carey's "miracle year", I doubt many have had a run like it since)
I LOVED the joke the Nostalgia Critic made when Jim Carrey made himself look awkward in front of Ben Stein with the former's gesticulating. He pretended to be Stein by saying *"This is why I don't believe in evolution."* 😆
I freakin' love this movie! Looney Tunes meets Jim Carrey, with a touch of Gangster violence! Oh, and let's not forget that this was the introduction of Cameron Diaz (my VERY FIRST Hollywood CRUSH!!! STILL LOVE HER!!!)!!! S-S-S-MOKIN'!!!!!
I can't help thinking that Milo didn't show up to help Stanley, per se... but because he was waiting for dinner, and was willing to do whatever he had to. 😂
Jim Carrey almost didn't make this or Dumb&Dumber because the casting director for Jurassic Park auditioned him several times for the role of Dr. Ian Malcolm. Speilberg eventually decided he wanted Jeff Goldblum's take on the character, which gave Carrey the availability to make this and D&D.
Milo is the real hero of this story. The mask emphasizes the wearer's inner id. Stanley was a cartoon, the villain was a monster and Milo was a fierce dog. ✌️❤️🌹
The source material for this movie is A LOT darker. In the original comics, the mask is evil. There are several wearers through the series and most of them start out using it for more or less altruistic reasons but after a while they basically just become serial killers that make cartoony jokes out of their victims. I much prefer the way the Jim Carrey version went.

Not to mention two of them almost didn't get made due to Carrey nearly being cast in Jurassic Park.

5:06 Fun Fact...AND Continuity error: The "loaner" car Stanley picks up at the mechanics is a 1951 Studebaker Champion. However, the car that falls apart on the bridge is a 1950 Studebaker Commander.
Bonus Fact: Studebaker's first modern automobile factory was established in my hometown of Hamilton, Ontario in 1947, in an anti-aircraft gun plant purchased from the Canadian government.
Notice that when he puts on the mask, he's watching cartoons. Imagine what he'd be like if he was watching anime.
*insert Fist of the North Star*
"NANI?!"
@@robertlombardo8437 I was thinking Rosario Vampire
It's so different from the comic book which is very violent, but this movie is brilliant and a classic!
Ace Ventura 1& 2, bruce almighty, liar liar, Me Myself and Irene. All must see Jim Carrey movies. Also the live action How the Grinch Stole Christmas, but thats for the holidays.
Could stand to do without that first one
Hey, Just you know, the name of the dog that played Milo is Max. Jim Carrey loved working with the dog so much that he adopted a Jack Russell after the film was made.
I'd forgotten how much goofy fun this movie is. RIP, Richard Jeni; I'd also forgotten that he was in this movie.
Cuban Pete will live in my head happily for the rest of my life.
A real delight watching your reaction to the 1994 film, The Mask.
I can't believe you've never seen this. It's a classic. Absolutely know every word by memory haha.
And just a few years later, Jim Carrey had another great dog co-star, Max, in "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" (while wearing another green mask, oddly enough).
"The Mask" was originally a dark adult themed comic book/graphic novel series.
You don't blame the reporter for betraying Ipkiss? I thought you were more wholesome than that, Addie..lol.
Wholesome? In this economy?
Yeah that was brutal, her true color came out there. Apparently a guys life is worth 50K to a women.
@@janekotoole8751 The economy would be fine if everyone was wholesome not greedy.
I mean $50,000 then is about $105,194.10 now. I don’t like what she did but I also understand.
@@randocalrissian1980 Well if it was found out what she did she can pay that 100K in legal fees when she's in court for almost getting a guy killed. Wasn't so worth it then.
The actor Peter Greene play as a bad guy every time. For example: The Mask, Pulp Fiction, Blue Streak & Judgement Night.
Also Training Day
The Usual Suspects too.
He also plays a supporting bad guy in Under Siege 2, alongside Eric Bogosian's antagonist character.
@@alancoy5305he also played the villain in that Halle Berry movie called “The Rich Man’s Wife”
Will have to check it out.
2:18 - “Jessica Rabbit vibes” - amazingly perceptive for 5 minutes into a movie that turns the main character into every classic cartoon character! Also, I never thought of Jessica Rabbit… good catch!
I have no idea how much they promoted it in the US, but in my country they went wild with the promotion for this movie. Terminator 2 and Jurassic Park levels of wild.
My favorite Jim Carrey movie! Milo is the MVP of this movie!
Nobody could have played that role better the Jim Carrey!
"From zero to hero."
Fun fact - Jim Carrey is been in a movie with Clint Eastwood - Jeff Daniels has also been in a movie with Clint Eastwood
And both Carrey & Daniels playing Dumber Dumber
Arguably Carrey's finest hour showing his versatility in slapstick as well as dancing like a demon. The salute to Tex Avery 'toons is the cherry on the top and nice job Ads re: Jessica Rabbit vibes on Cameron Diaz' introductory role. Sadly Richard Jeni committed suicide :(. And yep Milo is the true star of the film D:
Milo the wonder dog steals the show in this one. And imagine how hard that would be to do against Jim Carrey!
28:36 Fun Fact: Garrett T. Sato and Jeep Swenson perform Dorian while wearing the mask.
For most of my life, thanks to low quality tv's, I always thought the condom was a fish. The "moist" noise it makes helped reinforce that thought lol.
Check out the movies Major Payne(1995), The Nutty Professor(1996), Richie Rich(1994), Austin Powers: International Man Of Mystery(1997), and Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me(1999).
When you're a cartoon reality is no limit and you can kiss as good as you imagine!
He can do physical things that no other person can do
@@nsasupporter7557 Nobody considers him as a comedian. He's considered as that guy who does weird things with his face and body in everything he's in.
I quote this movie on a daily basis! "Somebody STOP me!!"
Absolutely iconic, but "Once Bitten" is probably my favorite Jim Carey movie.
Painful place to be bitten.
Why? He wasn’t even famous yet when he did that movie
@@nsasupporter7557 Contemporary fame has nothing to do with fun, that's why!
@@brucemaximus3797 I mean, Once Bitten was probably his most famous “Non famous” role, if that makes sense
Another fun film with a dog character is "K-9" (1989) starring Jim Belushi. A police detective is reluctantly partnered with a police dog with a mind of his own. Sort of like detectives Riggs and Murtaugh, they just don't get along.
Such a great movie.
This movie and Aladdin's Genie made me wish I had cartoon superpowers as a kid. Ah the good old days.
It’s funny you say that because both characters are played by the greatest comedians of all time… Robin Williams and Jim Carrey 🙂
@@nsasupporter7557 both of them are the best part of the reason :)
I'd love to see you do The Core, which is a lil' different, and a disaster movie, but maybe you'd like it? Love your work Ads! ❤
I'm on board with you here too. #TheCoreForAddieCounts
Nah Milo wad an absolute ride or die for Stanley. Him just hanging out outside the jail had me tearing up
I forgot just HOW fun Milo was in this :D
Jim Carrey almost didn't make this or Dumb&Dumber because the casting director for Jurassic Park auditioned him several times for the role of Dr. Ian Malcolm. Speilberg eventually decided he wanted Jeff Goldblum's take on the character, which gave Carrey the availability to make this and D&D.
In 1993 production ?
@@lexkanyima2195 Yes.
@@passionsquietrage wow, i never heard
Perfect role for him. Even without the mask, his face is so rubbery ^_^ OMG Cameron Diaz is stunning here! I'd forget all my words if she walked in.
Even after all these year I’m still pretty dumbfounded over the scene with Milo going stealth mode for the keys.
They really watered it down for the movie. The comic is much more violent and dark.
It's a good movie, such a shame it doesn't have a sequel
Milo is the real hero of this story.
The mask emphasizes the wearer's inner id. Stanley was a cartoon, the villain was a monster and Milo was a fierce dog. ✌️❤️🌹
The source material for this movie is A LOT darker. In the original comics, the mask is evil. There are several wearers through the series and most of them start out using it for more or less altruistic reasons but after a while they basically just become serial killers that make cartoony jokes out of their victims. I much prefer the way the Jim Carrey version went.
