It's crazy to think that Ace Ventura, The Mask, and Dumb&Dumber all came out in the same year. 1994 was an amazing year for movies in general but Jim Carrey was crushing it like no other
Great minds think alike.
Wait all 3 of those came out the same year? dayum
Not to mention two of them almost didn't get made due to Carrey nearly being cast in Jurassic Park.
94. The year of Carrey. All 3 are hilarious.
I struggle with comedies as a general rule (I have no patience for stupidity), but this was so hilariously creative I really enjoyed it. 🙂
Milo's face when he's stealing the keys is the best. The way he pauses to make sure the cop is still asleep. Brilliant. Give that dog an Oscar.
Only the dog from The Thing is comparably good.
@@christopherb501 More recent competition has emerged with the dog from Anatomy of a Fall
you should watch The Artist (2011) which features another Oscar-worthy canine performance
"Ssssssssmokin'!" Jim Carrey OWNED his role in this movie!
the original line was snaaaaazy but Jim changed it and honestly I think it was the right call :D
Clark even stole this line in Lois & Clark for his first real romantic date with Lois. He spun into multiple nice suits until he found the one he wanted, said, "Sssssssmokin'!" and then raised his leg and zipped away just like the Mask.
When this came out, I misheard him and thought he said "Spoken". I had no idea what he meant by that. If you listen to his pronunciation, you can almost hear a "P" sound.
Somebody *stop* me!
Little fact
The big teeth The Mask had were only supposed to be used in silent scenes, but Jim Carrey learned to talk with them in
He also saved them a fortune in CGI because of how much he could do with his face
Ouch
This movie's script was written EXCLUSIVELY for Jim Carrey. When Carrey read it he said "This seem like the perfect script for me." The writer said something like "I hope so, I had you in mind so if you said no to this we'd be in trouble."
Cameron Diaz
“Is this her first movie?”
First mainstream movie 😏
Yes, it was her first movie.
@@nathancruz9172 woosh

Fun fact: the comic book this was loosely based on... it was R-rated. Like, _really_ R-rated. People getting dismembered and stuff. It was a really interesting take on a pretty easy concept, and the movie was nothing like it. It could've failed miserably since it's not even close to the source material, but it became an instant classic.
This movie almost singlehandedly started the swing revival in the mid-late 90s.
And ex-Stray Cat singer, Brian Setzer and his Orchestra were part of that revival. Along with the 1993 film, "Swing Kids".
Cameron Diaz in this was definitely my sexual awakening 😂
Same here buddy.
Her and Trinity from the Matrix.
I was way too young to be awakened to be fair 😂
Congratulations on being swindled by MTF's 🫵🤣
yep her early career was smoking hot, until she became a scarecrow. But early movies, spectacular. Also doing xrated nude movies lol.
She looks absolutelly amazing ín this.
@@rytterl Funnily enough for some reaon I never found Trinity hot until almost two decades later, when I rewatched the original film after a long while (it was her scene at the club that sold it to me). However I did find Carrie-Anne Moss quite hot from the first time I saw her in Memento. Maybe it was just me not fancying her overall look in The Matrix.
I say this every time because it STILL blows my mind. Jim Carrey just exploded out of nowhere. The Mask, Ace Ventura AND Dumb and Dumber all released in 1994. That's more success than some actors entire careers in one year! Not to mention Cameron Diaz is absolutely stunning in her first movie 👀
The effects are still good 30 years later!
@@FriendZone75 can't believe he lost best special effects to forest gump which just did video overlay
@@sandrasnow-balvert7766 Seriously? that's absurd
wasn't Camerons first movie.
He wasn't from "out of nowhere," he was the token white guy and most talented cast member of "In Living Color" for four years before this movie came out.
Originally, the VFX artists were worried about the amount of effects that would be needed to "animate" Jim Carrey's movements as The Mask, but Carrey ended up doing a lot of the movements on his own which saved them money. All they had to do was slightly alter him for cartoony effect.
He was innovated
In the original comic, The Mask was much more violent and nihilistic, it was Jim Carrey and the director Chuck Russell who brought in the homages to classic Looney Tunes…
And as you wrote in the title, Jim Carrey is perfect for this role 🤩
It makes me want a requel where it combines the graphic violence from the comic with the comedy from this movie.
Hopefully one day we'll get a proper Big Head movie.
@@fynnthefox9078with Jim Carrey too
@edwardthompson4600 I doubt it'll happen, the comic's too niche to bank on it as a selling point, and people would see a dark remake as trying to be edgy and reject it on concept.
As much as I'm looking forward to Deadpool & Wolverine, I would LOVE a Deadpool vs Mask movie.
“I don’t blame her at all” (her being Peggy betraying Stanley) is *WILD*. Preposterous. Anyway thanks for the puppy love.
Yeah... that was the first time I suddenly stopped and said, "Whoa... Addie may just be a terrible person"!
She always seemed like a nice kid up until that moment.
Funny how small things can give profound insights.
Yeah most people would think handing such a nice guy over to known violent gangsters would be vile and toxic.
I guess she just gave us a bit of an insight into the female perspective.... Believe All women when they tell you Exactly who they are.
You don't blame the reporter for betraying Ipkiss? I thought you were more wholesome than that, Addie..lol.
Wholesome? In this economy?
Yeah that was brutal, her true color came out there. Apparently a guys life is worth 50K to a women.
@@janekotoole8751 The economy would be fine if everyone was wholesome not greedy.
I mean $50,000 then is about $105,194.10 now. I don’t like what she did but I also understand.
@@randocalrissian1980 Well if it was found out what she did she can pay that 100K in legal fees when she's in court for almost getting a guy killed. Wasn't so worth it then.
All of the cartoon effects are specifically in the style of the great cartoonist Tex Avery. The "Cuban Pete" number is a song that Desi Arnaz, as Ricky Ricardo, had performed on an episode of I Love Lucy; I understand that he had previously performed it in a movie in the late 40's.
21:12 "je t'adore, je te window, i dont care!" 😂😭😭

Addie in the lore of “The mask” comic, the powers basically let you do anything you want as long as you find it humorous. Since in the movie Stanley likes watching cartoons, he becomes a real life cartoon.
Yeah, it’s like your id takes center stage and you can do all the things you’ve ever dreamed of
Toon Force, same power as Bugs Bunny and Roger Rabbit.
it only works at night as well
according to Lore, the mask changes the wearor into their inner character. for example: Stanley a Cartoon character, Dorion a Demon & Milo a.... Cartoon Dog
So the mask removes the mask you live
@@SwiftJustice exactly
I knew you'd love Milo. He's such a lovable doggo. And definitely provided some great moments
Cuban Pete will live in my head happily for the rest of my life.
Fun fact: those huge white teeth was only supposed to be for one scene, but after they seen how good they looked they used them the whole movie😊
Jim learned to speak with them, thus keeping them in.
Addie, you are just rolling with the 90s nostalgia! Haven’t seen this one in so long and it brings back great memories…this was Carrey’s second big hit of 1994, came out after Ace Ventura but before Dumb & Dumber
Milo's name was Max. And this movie was the closest thing to a hit that he did. He was such a great actor, I'm surprised he didn't get more work. He improvised the biting the frisbee scene, and not letting go.
A dog....improvised....uh huh...

Hey Addie, nice reaction. This is one of my favorite Jim Carrey films. I used so many lines my freshman year in high school that I was quite annoying to others. "Can't make the scene if you don't have the green, I better make a little stop." "Waste not, want not." "Look Ma, I'm road kill, Ha Ha Haa!" "It's party time, P-A-R-T-Why? Because I gotta!" This movie never gets old, there's a sequel, if you choose to see it.
The friend/bank co-worker is Richard Jeni. He had a special that easily is in my top 5 favorite comedy specials called "Big Steaming Pile of Me" in 2005. Sadly, 2 years later, he took his own life. Such a tragedy and loss. He was brilliant.
This was the first film to seamlessly blend CGI elements into live actors
16:06 Sally Field's 1980 Oscar acceptance speech
32:11 Edward G. Robinson impression from The Cincinnati Kid (1965)
This is a very well done film that mixes both serious and comedy. This film shows the whole breadth of Jim Carreys talent. Also, note the great Ben Stein plays the psychiatrist in the film. Stein was an icon appearing in films in the 1990s. He began with "Bueller, Bueller". 1994 was a big year for Carrey. He also did Dumb and Dumber and Ace Ventura. You should definitely see him in another serious role "The Majestic" a great 2001 drama where he plays a Blacklisted Hollywood screenwriter in 1951 California, who lost his memory. A great romantic drama. He stars with "Walking Dead's Laurie Holden, along with the late David Ogden Stires, the late Martin Landau, the late James Whitmore and the late Hal Holbrook. A wonderfully written film from Frank Darabont, who directed "Shawshank Redemption" and "The Green Mile". Thank you for the reactions Cassie.
Peak Jim Carrey.
The Mask has a great soundtrack. Some of my best friends used to swing dance and we loved the music.
RIP Richard Jeni, I still have his comedy specials on dvd.
01:51: Yes, it was. Good Bad Flicks has an "Exploring" video on this movie. The production was looking for the right actress, found model Cameron Diaz, everyone knew she was absolutely perfect, they offered her the role. . . and she said no. She wasn't really interested in moving from modeling to acting. They had to work hard to convince her to take the role, then to convince the studio to hire her. The rest, as they say, is history.
14:35: "I was hoping we'd have a cool dance number!"
Oh, hold on to your hat, sister!
24:22: That's, I think the, greatest concept in the movie. The idea of masks, wearing metaphorical masks to present the person we think will serve us best among others, and how wearing a literal mask can free us to be ourselves, because we hide our faces. Stanley's kind of a goofy guy, so the Mask unleashes all of that, and he becomes a Looney Tune. Dorian is a monster, so the Mask turns him into a monster.
This is Diaz's debut
21:58 That's the cutest "uh-oh" I'ver heard.
The actor Peter Greene play as a bad guy every time. For example: The Mask, Pulp Fiction, Blue Streak & Judgement Night.
Also Training Day
The Usual Suspects too.
He also plays a supporting bad guy in Under Siege 2, alongside Eric Bogosian's antagonist character.
@@alancoy5305he also played the villain in that Halle Berry movie called “The Rich Man’s Wife”
Will have to check it out.
It's so different from the comic book which is very violent, but this movie is brilliant and a classic!
I'd forgotten how much goofy fun this movie is. RIP, Richard Jeni; I'd also forgotten that he was in this movie.
Check out the movies Major Payne(1995), The Nutty Professor(1996), Richie Rich(1994), Austin Powers: International Man Of Mystery(1997), and Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me(1999).
20:12 Hahaha! "If I tell you, you promise to leave my office right now." :D
I was a few years older than the characters in the year this movie takes place, but the surreal world it lives in felt really real to me. I feel like they were people i knew growing up.
lol, “legs for days,”. It’s nice to be reminded some turns of phrase are timeless.
I can't believe you've never seen this. It's a classic. Absolutely know every word by memory haha.
Interesting tidbit - The filming location of the auto mechanic shop was the very same used in Ghostbusters for the interior of their headquarters. It used to be a firehouse in L.A. (of course, for the exterior shots in Ghostbusters, they used a New York firehouse)
Ace Ventura 1& 2, bruce almighty, liar liar, Me Myself and Irene. All must see Jim Carrey movies. Also the live action How the Grinch Stole Christmas, but thats for the holidays.
Could stand to do without that first one
I can't help thinking that Milo didn't show up to help Stanley, per se... but because he was waiting for dinner, and was willing to do whatever he had to. 😂
Arguably Carrey's finest hour showing his versatility in slapstick as well as dancing like a demon. The salute to Tex Avery 'toons is the cherry on the top and nice job Ads re: Jessica Rabbit vibes on Cameron Diaz' introductory role. Sadly Richard Jeni committed suicide :(. And yep Milo is the true star of the film D:
My freaking childhood ❤ Jim Carrey is a living breathing cartoon! An icon! He was made for this role and I love him so much ❤️💖🥰 thank you for watching this , I love your reaction! This movie is so much fun!
5:06 Fun Fact...AND Continuity error: The "loaner" car Stanley picks up at the mechanics is a 1951 Studebaker Champion. However, the car that falls apart on the bridge is a 1950 Studebaker Commander.
Bonus Fact: Studebaker's first modern automobile factory was established in my hometown of Hamilton, Ontario in 1947, in an anti-aircraft gun plant purchased from the Canadian government.
End music reminded of a movie..I recommend watching Dutch, starring Ed O'Neil..fun wholesome road movie of a spoiled boy and his moms blue collar boyfriend :)
(If Addie was spelled with a 'Y')
It's Addy time! A-D-D-Why? Because we...gotta!!!! 😁🎭
2:18 - “Jessica Rabbit vibes” - amazingly perceptive for 5 minutes into a movie that turns the main character into every classic cartoon character! Also, I never thought of Jessica Rabbit… good catch!
Nobody could have played that role better the Jim Carrey!
The look on Milo's face when Stanley rips the mask off is priceless. Yes!!!! Milo is the best part of the movie! Fight Me & Probably Addie too!
This movie introduced me to Richard Jeni (Stanley’s best friend), a hilarious stand up who unfortunately passed away in 2007 due to suicide. If you’ve never watched or listened to his standup, you should. I haven’t listened for a while so I don’t know how well it holds up but I used to play one of his specials on repeat as a teen and I could probably recite most of it from memory with a little prompting.
I never checked him but it's true his few lines were very well delivered for a second role
Fun fact - Jim Carrey is been in a movie with Clint Eastwood - Jeff Daniels has also been in a movie with Clint Eastwood
And both Carrey & Daniels playing Dumber Dumber
There is a sequel to this film starring Jamie Kennedy that was made a decade later. It’s really weird, Jamie Kennedy finds the mask and gets his wife pregnant while wearing it and the child is born with the mask’s powers. Alan Cumming plays Loki who is looking for the mask and his father Odin is played by Bob Hoskins (who was Eddie Valiant in Who Framed Roger Rabbit). The only returning actor from the first one is Ben Stein who was the guy that Stanley visited to get his professional expertise on the mask.
A real delight watching your reaction to the 1994 film, The Mask.
27:03 I love how Milo is looking at the sleeping cop as if to say "Don't wake up. Don't wake up."
Great reaction. I have the day off work so I’m just having a relaxing birthday laying next to my dog in bed and scrolling through my Facebook, instagram, and UA-cam pages.
Mlio's breed are one of the most fun and smart dogs you can own...My surfing/skateboarder pal had one who rode every wave and sidewalk on the front for years. Loved Carrey's rubber-face and body moves...He was literally the comic character come to life, they couldn't have found a better guy to do the role.
Those dogs also have way more energy than their size suggests, so you really have to make an effort to tire them out every day or else you're going to end up with an unhappy dog (and a big mess).
Milo the wonder dog steals the show in this one. And imagine how hard that would be to do against Jim Carrey!
Is fun to think that Jim Carrey with his face wrap powers save a lot of money for the special efects departament, much more than he was payed for the role on the movie
Yes! That’s what makes him the best comedian ever. It amazes me how stupid alot of people are… because they just dismiss him as “just another comedian.” Uh… no he’s not! He can do physical things that no other person can do
Absolutely iconic, but "Once Bitten" is probably my favorite Jim Carey movie.
Painful place to be bitten.
Why? He wasn’t even famous yet when he did that movie
@@nsasupporter7557 Contemporary fame has nothing to do with fun, that's why!
@@brucemaximus3797 I mean, Once Bitten was probably his most famous “Non famous” role, if that makes sense
Perfect role for him. Even without the mask, his face is so rubbery ^_^ OMG Cameron Diaz is stunning here! I'd forget all my words if she walked in.
28:36 Fun Fact: Garrett T. Sato and Jeep Swenson perform Dorian while wearing the mask.
Another fun film with a dog character is "K-9" (1989) starring Jim Belushi. A police detective is reluctantly partnered with a police dog with a mind of his own. Sort of like detectives Riggs and Murtaugh, they just don't get along.
When you're a cartoon reality is no limit and you can kiss as good as you imagine!
I LOVED the joke the Nostalgia Critic made when Jim Carrey made himself look awkward in front of Ben Stein with the former's gesticulating. He pretended to be Stein by saying *"This is why I don't believe in evolution."* 😆
Thank you beautiful Addie for sharing your reaction. I needed this today ❤
Milo is the real hero of this story.
The mask emphasizes the wearer's inner id. Stanley was a cartoon, the villain was a monster and Milo was a fierce dog. ✌️❤️🌹
For most of my life, thanks to low quality tv's, I always thought the condom was a fish. The "moist" noise it makes helped reinforce that thought lol.
I forgot just HOW fun Milo was in this :D
Hey, Just you know, the name of the dog that played Milo is Max. Jim Carrey loved working with the dog so much that he adopted a Jack Russell after the film was made.
Even after all these year I’m still pretty dumbfounded over the scene with Milo going stealth mode for the keys.
Hello Addie!😊 The Mask is definitely ahead of its time! Everybody loves Milo in this film!🐶❤ Yep, this was Cameron Diaz's first film, back when she was sporting some young curves.😉 Great reactions to this very well made Jim Carey classic, Addie!!!!🎬👏👏👏👏
If you haven't seen The Truman Show, it's a great example of Jim Carrey in a dramatic role, and probably my favorite of his.
The cat claws things at 11:19, Addie! That should've been your thumbnail! 🥰🥰🥰
I liked Milo too. Especially when he put the Mask on. Thanks for the super fun reaction.
this movie jumpstarted my love for puns. i love this movie and Jim Carrey in general
Immediately when I saw this posted, I knew Addie was going to fall hard for Milo ❤
And just a few years later, Jim Carrey had another great dog co-star, Max, in "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" (while wearing another green mask, oddly enough).
I would've loved to have seen how Jim Carrey would do playing as Dr. Evil in Austin Powers if he had taken the role since he killed it as Dr. Robotnik in Sonic.
Yeah, I heard about that… Mike Myers wanted him to play Dr Evil. But he couldn’t find another comedian/actor to play him so he just said “screw it, I’ll just play him too”
I'd love to see you do The Core, which is a lil' different, and a disaster movie, but maybe you'd like it? Love your work Ads! ❤
I'm on board with you here too. #TheCoreForAddieCounts
Years ago, when this movie came out, I had a friend who was getting married in Mexico City. On my flight there, the plane played this movie in Spanish. The scene with the dog accidentally getting the cheese instead of the keys didn't survive translation. "No queso, la llaves!" I had already seen the movie in English, so I knew what the joke was, but if anyone was seeing it for the first time, I wonder what they thought of that.
I quote this movie on a daily basis! "Somebody STOP me!!"
I have no idea how much they promoted it in the US, but in my country they went wild with the promotion for this movie. Terminator 2 and Jurassic Park levels of wild.
Milo is my favorite movie dog ever 😍
"The Mask" was originally a dark adult themed comic book/graphic novel series.
Addie I agree with you besides Jim Carrey Milo was the star of the movie and If I had a dog I would teach him /her to help me find my keys and to get a glass bottle from the fridge.
You should check out Man on the Moon with Jim Carrey
In a deleted scene Mask Dorian kills Peggy Brandt by throwing her into the printing press in a nod to how violent the original comic book series was. It was only a rough cut version that had to be pieced back together for the special features however. I guess they thought it was too dark for PG-13 and the muffler's up the butt scene was enough dark humour.
My mom wouldn’t let me see this when it came out and I was so distraught.
Ace Ventura: Pet Detective and Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls are next. Although the former is the better. But I do like them both!
Milo (MAX) is a great actor UwU
Max acted in some movies back in the day w
The source material for this movie is A LOT darker. In the original comics, the mask is evil. There are several wearers through the series and most of them start out using it for more or less altruistic reasons but after a while they basically just become serial killers that make cartoony jokes out of their victims. I much prefer the way the Jim Carrey version went.
THE MASK GREAT MOVE
This movie and Aladdin's Genie made me wish I had cartoon superpowers as a kid. Ah the good old days.
It’s funny you say that because both characters are played by the greatest comedians of all time… Robin Williams and Jim Carrey 🙂
@@nsasupporter7557 both of them are the best part of the reason :)
Dogs are pretty much always cute in movies but Milo actually really was a good little actor too !
(a _very_ silly movie but part of Jim Carey's "miracle year", I doubt many have had a run like it since)
It's a good movie, such a shame it doesn't have a sequel

Harlem Nights with Eddie Murphy and Richard Pryor is a great movie with an all star cast I think you and your subscribers would enjoy.

If you'd like to watch another 90s comedy (with some horror elements), and a funny death scene, you might want to look at 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer' from 1992.
The movie is not related to the later TV show, but both were created by the same person. The movie was rewritten to make it more light and funny.
