The Thematic Duality of Fireworks in A Silent Voice

- A Silent Voice, directed by Naoko Yamada, has many of the visual traits that I've come to appreciate from her work, especially when it comes light. One of my favorite sequences from an audio/visual perspective is the fireworks scene, and I think that's in part why I became really interested in their motivic purpose within the story when they are such a small part of the film. Today we take a look at how one motif that only exists in two scenes speaks to the larger themes of the work.

Damn. It's telling that this sorta artistry is something I completely missed, but all the feelings you explain are things I noticed anyway. She really is a great storyteller.

"Shouko is unable to hear yet she decided to listen opposed to ishida who's is able to hear but refused to listen" Is how i've always put it. Seeing shouya break free from the chains he tied himself with, is just amazing. Ishida becoming the firework for shouko is a very tear jerking moment because he showed shouko that there's someone out there who's willing to be with her without making her feel like a burden. 10/10 A Silent Voice or Koe No Katachi will always have a special place in my heart.
I do agree with that. They are in a way a yin and yang. It's like they are helpless without the other.

I don't get to watch a lot of the videos because they often cover shows I haven't seen, but whenever I do watch them I'm surprised at the connections you are able to find and the understandable readings of the scenes (despite often being different from my own).

Same I've watched it so many times. If it wasn't for UA-cam's wierd algoridom I would have never know about this amazing movie. I probably wouldn't be going through this wierd weabo stage od my life right now. But I'm glad it all happened.
Ever since I watched this film, I get legitimately anxious anytime I see fireworks in any other film or series, regardless of genre
I feel like Yamada has a kind of obsession with motifs, especially the ones that show a duality between different elements of the story. Liz and the Blue Bird is practically all about duality, and you can find this kinds of motifs literally everywhere in that film. But here, you see she has always had that.
Apart from the usage of fireworks, which I noticed like in my fourth watch, and you absolutely nailed its significance in this video, another motif I like in this film is when Shouya covers Yuzuru with his umbrella, when she runs away back to her home. And then, at the end, when Shouya is in the hospital and Ueno visits him everyday, without letting Shouko see him, there's a scene where Ueno is leaving the hospital, and it's raining, and then Shouko covers her with her umbrella.
I love how there's something very similar in those two scenes, not just in a literal sense, but because both Shouya and Shouko are deeply hurted individuals, and they're still able to know when someone else needs their help, or feels lonely, and they act upon that, because they know that feeling better than anyone.
I'm pretty sure there most be more motif like that scattered throughout the film, but that's what I love about it. I've seen this movie like 10 times now, and I can swear I find a new detail everytime that I watch it. Damn, I even noticed with this video for the first time that Shouko left her hearing aid on the table in the fireworks scene.

See these are the kinds of thinls someone like me would look over. I'm glad to know people lile you are there looking deeper into a movie/story makes me want to comprehend things and to really look for a deeper meaning. What's life like without truly findining meaning? Am I right?

I am convinced that this is the greatest movie ever made. Somehow it manages to show so perfectly the human struggles of loneliness, regret, hate, and forgiveness. I’ve never seen anything so filled with symbolism, beauty, and emotions like A Silent Voice. This video was amazing and I love your channel

What a fantastic analysis!! A Silent Voice is my favourite animated film of all time and seeing others talk about it only makes me want to rewatch it more often. Amazing direction, story, and animation--all of it comes together to perfectly highlight the themes
I think it's not a surprise a motif for togetherness can represent seclusion so well. Just imagine being alone at Christmas, New Year's Eve, or when there are fireworks outside the window. This kind of events is all about being together with friends or family, so it's a big source of stress and pain when you're isolated. Like, being alone in a big crowd, especially at something like a festival, with everyone around you laughing and enjoying their time, it just hurts to see. Even if you're not physically alone, but still feel alone in your head.
Yamada builds up on that masterfully.
This channel gives you high quality content, more than a lot of other channels.
Replay Value needs to blow up and get more views. More people need to watch your videos.
I always loved the way shoko and ishida parallel each other, you watch ishida go through an arc in the first half, and then you realize that shoko is going through almost the exact same one in the second half, also how they are both "deaf" in a sense, one is true deafness that shoko was born with, and another is a self-inflicted deafness that ishida driven himself too
5:19 I like what you did here, like Shoya was the equivalent of fireworks for Shoko in that moment
I could watch Ishida cry 1,000,000 times at the end of the movie and I really think I would get the chills every single time.
Often I think in my loneliness, were they really think about A Silent Voice this deep when they make the movie? (But again, the movie really hit me hard in the core)
The 2016 Animated Movie A Silence Voice really means to me is:Bullying,Despair,by helping others,to learn to forgive one another and to bring hope with happiness from one another.

The only person who's more deaf than a person who can't hear is a person who won't listen, with their ears and their heart. I'll always remember how amazing A Silent Voice was and always will be.
I saw it again a few days ago...and I still cried. From the fireworks scene, I knew what happened right after and I couldn't held back my tears. Even after the movie ends, I was still sobbing.

This movie truly is so beautiful, both in how it looks and how beautifully it is writen
Ever since I watched this movie about a week ago I've been looking for someone else who also noticed the firework motif, what perfect timing! :D. I interpreted it at first as representing the transition between life and death, how like a firework exploding suddenly in the sky one small choice can end a life, and send ripping effects across everything they knew. Ishida was snapped out of his choice by fireworks, and later when fireworks gave Shoko the opportunity to make the choice he was there to pull her back. I agree with their representation of solitude and togetherness as well. aaaaa A Silent Voice is so good!!!
A silent voice is honestly my favorite movie.
Even surpassing the Ghibli films.
I could never say why without missing something else I'd want to add later. The characters are so different, some are more understanddable in the manga. For example the red haired guy, who was bullied as a kid and the sole reason he wanted to become a teacher was to teach his bully's unborn son and feel good about "teaching the kid to become good" which he realized was just a revenge plot to get back at the bullies at the end.
My personal favorite Ghibli film was Howl's moving castle, where everything looks so lively. I can't wait to rewatch it again.
A silent voice was too deep for me when I first watched it, I still cried, but only because I felt a little moved at the end, And now these breakdowns of the movie has really made me think again. Damn this movie is definitely my favourite
It’s ironic that in this day and age, despite the fact mental health awareness is more acknowledged than probably its ever been, men still make up 80% of all suicides. As a man myself, I find this horribly troubling, especially since, being a 21 year old college student, I’ve known of 3 people in my life who have committed suicide: the UA-camr Etika, who I’d been a fan for years prior to his suicide, a boy from my high school, and my father’s friend from work. Its a fact that it’s not just a mans issue, but it does bother me that men are more successful when attempting.
Probably one of the factors that greatly affect it is the notion "real men don't cry" which is very stupid. I've dealt with mental issues by myself and it's not great, i tried consulting someone but they made me feel like it was unbecoming for me to talk about such things. It's horribly troubling indeed.
Honestly this video was hard to get through. Its good, just as all your other videos but... this movie hit too close to home in a few places but none so much as when Shoko tries to kill herself and the few scenes immediately after I almost threw up and started to sob quietly. I had to go to the bathroom to wash up and calm down and actually lay down for a few moments because I was mentally and physically exhausted. I feel itd be too personal to explain why this happened but I'll just say it hit me on a personal level and I had to kinda process that whole thing.
Edit: I forgot to say that this movie made me appreciate my brother and best friend even more than I already had and it was a great movie. Despite the emotional troubles it gave me I definitely think it did what it set out to do and I love it for that.
How is it you always find something I missed in the shows/films I watched and manage to raise my view of them even higher than before? This channel is really something.

One of the best videos I have ever seen. I have seen Silent Voice quite a few times and loads of analysis videos on it and I love the fact that so much and I mean absolutely so much can be taken away from it in so many different ways. From its complex characters and their interactions to themes of communication,self loathing, self forgiveness, to cinematography to the craftiness in its sound track flow and sound design and now the artistic usages of motifs like the fireworks you mentioned here showcasing the thematic duality of loneliness and togetherness, all of these give me even more reason to love this movie. Awesome work dude!

I totally forgot about the fireworks from earlier in the movie
I saw this get uploaded last night a bit before I planned to go to bed, and decided not to watch it because I didn't want to cry again at that moment (because I know what this movie does to me). Flash forward to this morning where I'm trying to eat breakfast and tears are streaming down my face. The fireworks scene during the "all is lost" point in the movie has always got to me.

The ost used when shoko was jumping, it's wierd how it creates sense of anxiety. In general it would just have been just an another ost but combined the scene it is incorporated, it's amazing how it created sense of anxiety and every time you listen it again you always feel that anxiety.

Almost 3 or 4 years, I think and you can correct me, since this movie got released I honestly though people would never do any more reviews on it. Thank you at least this such a wonderful movie and everytime I watch it I always find a new element in its art/story. This movie made me cry and made me realize a lot of things about who I am and who I want to become but I will achive that. In all honest it kinda kickstarted the whole weabo state I'm going through but thank you for this review regardless.
Silent Voice always will my most favorite movie of all time, not just Anime but movie as a whole.
I would really appreciate it if you can make a video on the Ending scene of the movie, the way those X's fall from everyone's faces is literally the single greatest shot of the movie, and the whole movie builds itself for that to happen, Please consider making a video on that.

Great video and I really love the movie. I also think the movie is better than its source material. It is able to cut out the fluff that was not needed and padded out the manga.

It's such a shame that this movie got outshadowed by your name when it's hundreds of leagues above it. Probably my favourite movie of all time, been recommending it ever since I first saw it. More people deserve to see this masterpiece.
I know right. Me and a friend of mine got into argument about which is better. He said your name and I said a silent voice. This movie personally this movie had bigger effect then on me rather your name. Your name is more of a spectacle a silent voice is more intimate story and that why I preferred it.

All of them are highly relatable. Yo can not hate Ishida as a kid because he's a child and knows nothing. Can't blame Ueno for hating Nishimiya because she lost something. You can't blame Sahara for leaving because you felt that threat sometime ago. You had Kawai's perception because sometime in your life you acted as a bystander. I could probably go on... But man... This anime is well thought out.
