I have seen this Anime several times and have read the Manga which hit me more in the feels then any Manga I have read..
I loved how the Anime almost stayed true to the Manga with little being left out in the development of the characters and storyline..
What would make this better would be a short After Story, covering what happens after the festival finishes and maybe a look into the future..

As someone who has always felt alone only because I block away all the people who really care for me I definitely feel for this quote and this movie above all showed me that sometimes it's not just one person to blame but it is our human nature we aren't perfect and we should strive to be better.

Hibike! is another masterpiece from KyoAni, I really am amazed how its animation and cinematography brought out every characters development and emotion. You can relate to every characters' ideals and struggles.
And the music, it's amusing how they were able to create music pieces that goes well with the series, since the story is adapted from a light novel.
I wanted to show this movie to my mom so I can tell her about how much I love this movie and I did just that, we watched it together and after the movie ended, I asked for my mom's opinions about the movie and what she thinks of it, she gave a pretty basic review and thought the story and characters were okay but she tackled particularly towards the ending in which she said that the ending was absolutely perfect because it gave her hope in life, no matter the darkest times we've been through, there's always a light at the end of the tunnel (which was the metaphor of the film) I thought it was nice how my mom loved the ending and thought I should share it with you.
When Shouya's mum found out he was trying to commit suicide I balled my eyes as it opened my eyes to how it affects others.
yeah that scene in particular is really hard for me to watch for... uhh... personal reasons
People who think suicide is the only way out and think that it will make life easier for them and better off without, but in reality it is total opposite you realize.
Unfortunately I learned a far harder way. I had suicidal tendencies all throughout high school and my freshman year of college, but at the end of the latter my best friend ended up going through with it. It sounds kinda bad, but going through the whole grieving process helped me to cope with it and see how it affects others. I’ve not made an attempt since.
I also really like the scene with his mom because it’s portrayed very authentically. She doesn’t try to give a therapy session, she loses her cool and blames herself. Which is what a normal person would do because they don’t comprehend what goes on in the head of one in such a dark place.

@@tdfern1 It really depends. Some people feel that way, but others are just so depressed that they take the blame all on themselves. In fact, as Shoya demonstrates, some people even go out of their way as to cut all their ties with various groups (e.g. cleaning out their locker, closing their bank accounts, cleaning up their room, etc.) because they believe it will be a hassle for those they leave behind to have to do it for them when they pass.

This film is the ONLY accurate portrayal of bullying I’ve seen in the media. The ONLY one. It’s such a beautiful film that I found while in Shouya’s position. You aren’t defined by your past. You’re deserving of love and friendship! I love this film and this analysis!

in general, american films/mainstream hollywood shit,,, don't portray bullying properly. esp american tv shows like ughhhhh. bullying is not "that person is bad this person is good." everyone is struggling, and even the people who arent the active bullies are wrong in their own ways. friendship isn't just drama and romance, it's learning to understand others while overcoming you fear of others by changing yourself. silent voice 11/10, i watch it every year. positive vibes and gives me hope to recharge for the new year, 2021 :)
As someone who was the bully to kids who were autistic, I could relate to this movie so much. Now the funny part is I am losing my hearing, which I would joke kids about the same thing. Now I never tried to commit sucide, but I did go through a time in my life of hating myself. Now the funny part is the person who helps me with many things in life is deaf, but the difference is from me and shoyo is that I was his soldier basically. I would do anything anyone asked without asking why, I would constantly hurt myself over doing simple things wrong as speaking when not to be asked to speak. Now anytime I watch this movie it’s something I can actually relate to, which I hate I relate to this but I’m glad I relate to it. I’m still fixing the things I said and did to some of these people, but this was one of those movies that pushed me forward to do even better things to help those I bullied
“Your Name” just doesn’t personally connect to me as much as “Silent Voice”

Actually same for kimi no na wa,but the kimi no na wa is like a fantasy like animated movie that they will change body and the time is changing...
So a silent voice win in the real life stories.

lare 1 connecting people? The 2 main characters are meant to be connected but we barely get to see how they are connected. The lesbian relationship is the only relationship we actually get to properly see instead of a fast montage that literally skips the whole development of the whole relationship. Your name does connect people who otherwise would never meet each other. But the way they display is crappy.

Can't really blame them. Your Name is an amazing film. Koe No Katachi is still my favorite anime film though i can understand why the majority loved Your Name so much.
I liked both of them but i prefer the environment of your name ,the nature was more realistic ,the success of your name is not only about the story but the music ,art,...,a silent voice is a realistic story ,its beauty is in its caracters and the story itself, still they both are great movies we should appreciate without comparing them

Because Oscars are nominated by mostly white hollywood celebrates, and they would have only seen a few animation pieces such as something their kid wanted to see, thus many entries not even knowing of Silent Voice's existence

The Oscars have as much meaning as you choose to assign them. The meaning found in this film triumphs over any hollywood award show.
Oscars is exclusively USA, not international award. I thank Netflix for broadening my movie and series list.
What first attracted me to this movie was the fact that one of the characters was deaf and that it used sign language. However, when I actually sat down and watched it I was blown away at how realistic it was to how it displayed anxiety and bullying. I couldn't help but cry at specific points. I actually like the symbolism of the Xs over the faces simply because it gives a visual queue of social anxiety.
Also, A Silent Voice is a masterpiece and deserves the recognition of 100%.
The reason I watched this movie was actually because of the x's! I saw the scene where the mc covers his ears and just knew I had to watch this movie. I thought it was such a beautiful way to portray his anxiety!
I started watching the movie because I saw the scene where Ishida and Nishimiya were fighting in the classroom.

Just like Your Name changed your life, A Silent Voice changed mine. As someone who has repeatedly sacrificed themselves for the sake of friends, I blame myself a lot for their condition and if they aren't doing well emotionally, I often feel like it's my fault. I'm working through my issues and A Silent Voice has done a lot to spur that on. Shoya's persistency towards making Shoko happy over the summer as well as Yuzuru's attempt to make Shoko value her life more through her photography reminded me a lot of myself. I had several close friends, including an ex, attempt suicide my freshman year of high school. One of whom I had fought with very recently before the attempt, which hospitalized her. I blamed myself, and still do. So I now put a lot of myself into desperately supporting my friends like Shoya does out of fear of them actually succeeding and leaving my life forever, but it's at the cost of my own mental health. I think I also need to learn how to live without valuing other people's lives over my own. I hope I can also overcome my anxieties in the future and heal.
I understand that you love these people and don’t wish to be responsible for their demise, but it’s ultimately their decision. You can only do so much, the rest is up to them. They are also responsible for themselves and owe it to those who care about them to live on. Suicide is ultimately a selfish act, especially when you have people around you, practically begging you to acknowledge your own value. If someone fails at life even after that, you cant blame yourself. Just discipline yourself to be as balanced as possible.

The true antagonist is humanity and the self. Not exactly that humanity is against Shoya but instead we have something in everyone that is wrong with us. The scene when Shoya call out on everyone's flaws that is the point the veil is torn and show the true enemy. It's us and we have to defeat it.

I love this movie. My fiance was the one who brought it to my attention, and we watched it on a trip to St. Louis. And even though she had seen it already, she still cried, and it shook me to my core. Crying in the middle of the trip really gets people in the car around you to ask if you're okay. "I'm not crying... YOU'RE CRYING!"

i've been avoiding this video because a silent voice really cut through me when i first watched it, bc i was in probably one of my lowest points and it cut deep y'know. and this video really explained why.
also the scene where the Xs finally drop and shouya accepts life, as you put it, really hit me hard. it made me bawl my eyes out as someone who's been blocking out life as well, albeit our circumstances are very different.
idk what the point of my comment is. i guess it's to express how much a silent voice really means to me. it's probably my favorite movie (aside from spiderverse) and i love it more than kimi no nawa, but that's only because of personal reasons. i think both films are amazing and can't really be compared, even objectively BECAUSE their essence is exploring human aspects of, well, people.
I've been avoiding watching anything to do with the movie since I watched it a few weeks ago for similar reasons. I've experienced everything that these characters go though (bullying, depression, anxiety, suicidal thoughts) and just seeing that ending with the X's falling made me cry again.
I'm glad beautiful movies like this exist, and hope everyone can grow and become happier in life and realize it's worth living.
And I think to myself why does anime with narrative writing like this one aren’t nominated in the oscars
Mostly because they've started to let people who know nothing about animation vote in the animation category, and those people mostly vote for the one film they were able to drag their kids to. Some of the people that are allowed to vote haven't seen ANY of the nominated films.
Also because the Academy is a giant joke and the Oscars are a marketing charade.

I can relate to Shoyas social anxiety. Constantly feeling like your doing something wrong or always afraid that you’ll be judged with everything you do. I feel that Shoya began to feel this way cause he felt like a horrible person, and that he was afraid to be judged for what he did. His guilt and embarrassment might’ve been the result of his social isolation.
I was waiting for this video for so long. It's manga made me cry even more.
same here! one of the rare instances that i got off my butt and read the manga equivalent. i understand why they had to cut things and the movie adaptation is still pretty spetacular and does what it wants to do pretty amazingly, but the manga is also a different unique experience, especially the film making part

This anime is beautiful and hands down the best movie I have ever seen. I can relate so much to the main character that when I first saw this movie I was so shook. I probably sat in my room for a good half hour just bawling my eyes out. It's amazing how great of a job they did on the art, the animation, and especially the storyline. There's so much raw emotion and it's simply just a breathtaking movie.
When I first saw it, I cried like 4-5 times for different parts. Mostly when I thought he died and when he finally looked up happily and the X-crosses fell off everyone’s faces cause I could relate to that.
*Spoilers for the film below:*
One thing I truly appreciated about this movie is that it didn't try to justify Shouya's actions as a child. It doesn't put the blame on a bad home life, it doesn't take the insidious route of saying he bullies her because he likes her (I'm not entirely sure when he started developing feelings for Shouko, but either way the film doesn't try to romanticize the bullying). It just shows his actions as truly harmful, and not just to Shouko but to himself as well.
Although you sympathize with Shouko from the very start because she is the victim in all this, eventually you can't help but sympathize with Shouya as well. Specifically because you see he feels immense remorse for what he's done, and because he so desperately wants to make ammends.
Shouya shows that he truly regrets what he did to her, and we see him start to realize just how horrible his actions were when he learns how expensive her hearing aids were. When he sees his mother withdraw all that money from the bank to pay Shouko's mother. When he sees his mom bleeding from where Shouko's mother ripped off her earing, presumably as revenge for Shouya ripping out her daughter's hearing aids and making her bleed. When he's being bullied for trying to throw his classmates under the bus when they refused to admit they also took part in bullying Shouko. When he learns that Shouko was trying to protect him by cleaning his desk. When he freezes up after learning that she transfered schools.
He also goes out of his way to learn sign language, to communicate with her. He goes out of his way to reunite her with her old friend Sahara. He tells Yuzuru he wants Shouko to love herself.
He saves her life on the night of her attempted suicide, and he decides he wants to give her a reason to live, and that he too wants to keep on living.
And if Shouko decides to forgive him and let him back into her life, if she decides to be his friend, who are we to say he doesn't deserve forgiveness?
I also appreciated that the one who is aware of their own romantic feelings is Shouko. She's the one who tries to confess her feelings. Shouya mishears her confession, and I don't think it was solely because her speaking voice was unclear, but because Shouya just can't even begin to consider that she would be in love with him after everything that he did in the past. He's amazed that she forgave him and even more amazed that she would let him be her friend. I don't think romance was even on his mind for much of the film.
Had the film tried to justify or romanticize his past with bullying, or had Shouya and Shouko ended up together as a couple by the end of the film, I don't think the film would have been nearly as strong or as impactful. I believe the end of the manga hints at them ending up together in the future, but the manga and film are first and foremost about remorse, forgiveness, redemption, friendship, and healing, and I think it handled those themes exceptionally well.
Great analysis. Just two points.
1. Shoya’s mother ripped her earring off herself to show her apology and feel what Shoko went through.
2. From Shoko’s standpoint It wasn’t really like forgiving because she had very low self-esteem and always felt guilty for putting so much stress on her family as well as ruining Shoya’s friendship. She always thought it was because of her disability that she was getting bullied and it couldn’t be helped.

I think the connection is that both the MC have a downfall, and slowly have a build back up, and being able to stand back up on their own 2 feet, overcoming the past.

as someone who struggles with depression and social anxiety seeing shoya slowly overcoming it and at the end when he was finally able to see the faces of his peers really hit me hard and helped me push through my struggles a lot i’ll always love this movie so much and it’s so refreshing to see these struggles portrayed accurately in media
I absolutely love their flawed past/present and how they can be redeemed and learn to be accepting of themselves.
The fact that the movie wasn’t about the girl
but it was about the boy that finally accepted himself
It started as a cute love story and as it went along evolved into a reflection of humanity and emotions. The real love was learning to love yourself. 10/10 film

This film taught me what Anxiety truly is! A lot of people think it's about Fear....it isn't. It's about Perception!
I have a feeling that A Silent Voice has a personal connection to everyone when it cames to human emotions. Anxiety, depression, even suicidal thoughts. It's very difficult to get out of this shell that is your past, the things you've done can never leave your mind, it posions your mind with thoughts of self blame and this movie is a hard realization of this and because of this it's one of my favorites.
How funny it is. That im watching this anime when i just realize that i have some traits of social anxiety.thats why i cant describe my emotion while watching specially knowing that i dont care about those deeply emotional scenes. And i could say that the "x"on everyones faces are true because thats what i feel when i need to socialize.

When I saw the community post that you were making a video on A Silent Voice, literally couldn’t contain how happy I was.
Both Your Name and A Silent Voice share my #1 favourite film slot as they both helped me immensely in a dark time when I needed them. It opened up a whole new world of anime and communities for me, and even after reading every manga/light novel for both IPs, I still get goosebumps when I see any image/mention of them.
I hope that as more people talk about A Silent Voice and also the effects of anxieties, depression and bullying, we as a society will come closer to acceptance of those who can’t accept themselves.

As a person with social anxiety myself, I can easily say that this film is equal parts inspirational and heartfelt, and I can’t help but cry every time I see it. It truly is such a powerful and emotional film, and one of my personal favorites.

I really love how they depicted social anxiety because it was done so well and "realistically". As someone with social anxiety I also have a habit of walking around with my gaze to the ground to avoid other people's eyes and my mind blurring out other people's faces/presence.

Man people seems still to love talk about this movie even after 3 years it's been released. Well I did like the movie and most (if not, all) of the characters and how excellent adapts the themes from the manga (which I read the manga even when it was still serializing in Weekly Shonen Magazine, although I didn't think it was gonna be a hit back then as it is now). However, I think the manga does it slighly better.

@@mischief7781 probably when it premiered in your local theaters but yes, it theatrically released in Japan back in September 2016 (Geez looking back 2016 was kind of unique year for anime).
The manga did but i still Take the movie over it any day. The music; voice Performance, animation, Art and feeling is just too good

Thank you for reminding me why this beautiful piece of art is my favourite movie of all time. A Silent Voice will forever have a very special place in my heart and I can see myself rewatching it even ten years from now.

i dont understand why people compare Your Name and A Silent Voice so much. Like yes they do have some similiarities but they focus on completely different things. Both stories have meaningful relationships between two people but Your Name is more about the love and connection itself and A Silent Voice is about the personal struggles of a human and how the people around you can change you for the better.
Probs because its was released in the same year at almost the same period.

The thing that pissed me off the most is the girl with the glasses never understanding her role in the bullying. Like she truly believed her hands were clean bc physically she didn’t do anything to Shoko. Then she had the audacity to raise her voice? Oh hell no. Otherwise, I loved this movie for the very realistic angle it took
Well honestly i dont see what she did wrong. I think the black haired girl contributed to the bullying the most
She's much worse in the manga. I hated that fake plastic bitch.
