- Koe no Katachi is about communication, first and foremost. It's a sensuous experience dedicated to the instinctual, complex ways we respond to ourselves and the world around us. Director Naoko Yamada beautifully captures the shape of voice, not by what is said, but what's unsaid. A film I nearly died waiting to get my hands on, Koe no Katachi perfectly expresses what I look for in the medium. Here, I hope to shed light on some of the ways this film inspired me and many others. Enjoy!

At first I thought Shoko's suicide attempt was poorly written and misrepresented a sensitive issue, but I watched the movie a few more times and read the manga and realized Shoko, much like Shoya, connects all of her family's misfortunes inward. She blames herself for her father leaving home, she blames herself that her mother seems unhappy, and she blames herself that Yuzuru temporarily drops out of school. So after her grandmother dies (her only empathetic relative) and the bridge scene (where shoko believes she has made shoya - the boy she loves - chase away his friends); it all compounds to intensify her self-hatred. And the trick of Koe no Katachi is that we are as blind as Shoya is to Shoko's feelings, up until the moment the rug is pulled from beneath us.

“Shoya comes to understand Shoko now in every way he failed to then: hand movement, writing, expression, vibration, touch.” I never consciously realized this while watching the movie, but it’s so true. Such a cool line. At first I thought this video was telling me new things about the movie, but in actuality it’s putting every feeling of love i already had for it into words. Thank you.

This movie was so painful for me to sit through but in a good way, it felt so raw and real that I literally had to take a break like every 10 - 20 min lest I ended up dissolving into a ball of tears and sadness. This movie is a masterpiece and I have no regrets watching it.
Ricardo Valdes I watched the movie for the first time almost a year ago and I cried so much seeing as I was dealing with anxiety and suicidal thoughts abc around about a year from watching that movie I might be going deaf from a common cause of going deaf, noise included hearing loss, and I'm frightened that I might never get my hearing back, and so that happening as well as me having anxiety has now brought back the suicidal thoughts

My only regret right now is how I cannot forget this movie, then rewatch this again, and again, and again.
This movie was so deep and resonated with me that I never thought movies could do. I cried a lot first time I've watched this. I've never felt this for the character's struggle in this movie, specially Shouko and Shouya, than in other movies. My only tip for people reading this comment, is to read the manga first, then the movie after. It will help you appreciate the whole even more. Like two halves of a circle.

this analysis makes me feel dumb. i didnt think like this while watching the movie.
Neither did I tbh but I suppose if I actually decided to analyze it and did my research on my second viewing, I would've possibly made an insightful comment on communication . But really, you shouldn't feel dumb because eventually if you try and if you really want to do it, you yourself can analyze animes in the same way he does by simply taking your time, thinking and being equally or if not, more passionate about this broad medium. Anyone who has a love for doing this and can reason, observe and formulate an opinion will be able to comfortably analyze this film but obviously, it would require time and a bit of effort to audaciously piece together the subtle scenes of films and Animes like this. From reading my slightly odd explanation about analysing anime as if I’m an expert on this , I hope you realize that you don't need to be Einstein to decipher the nuances of this film, you just need time and experience and love for Anime I guess or alternatively, drink alchole. Joking, you don’t need to do that. Lastly, a person analysing Animes would not make he/she smart so don’t feel shit about yourself just because you didn't arrive at the same conclusion as UTS.BTW I'm not saying UTS isn't smart given that he's my bae.
That's the point I think, visual storytelling like this is generally not meant to be noticed. It gets the emotions across wordlessly.

Shoko can only have 1 earing aid cuz during primary school 1 got stripped away and made her bleed, emplying that the part where the earing aid was attached is now damaged
Also because she lost ability to hear in the same ear. That was foreshadowing for 2 things. His mom also losing the earning on the same ear by shokos mom because he bullied her and her losing the hearing in that ear.
I don't get it... Was it her left ear that has been damaged?, I thought it was the right one, And why Doesn't she wear on the right side too?
@@dafaqu694 Shouya ripped the hearing aid out of Shouka's right ear which caused it to bleed somehow. The hearing aid is like an earbud right so idk how it caused it to bleed but the story suggests that it caused damage to the ear. It was shown in a fast scene that she went to the doctors and found out she was permanently deaf in the right ear, which is why she only wears a hearing aid in her left ear 😢 This movie makes you really like the characters, Shouka and Shouya, and it is low-key depressing cause I want to see what happens next lol
@@taelongx shouya did rip her earing aid out of her ear, but the bleeding came from shouko's own ear, you do realize there is a scar around the outside of the ear? Like a nail scar, yeah when shouya took her earing aid out of her ear, I suppose shouya's nail hit shouko's ear and it made her bleed
@@dafaqu694 Well the hearing aid isn't a tube going into her ear so I was wondering how did that cause damage to her ear when Shouya ripped out her hearing aid. Now that you mentioned the nail scar... I am thinking he might have yanked her ear lobe when he pulled out her hearing aid which caused the damage? shiiit that sounds painful I feel so bad for Shouka 😭😔
Some comments:
I don't think Shouko's smile is entirely honest. It's what she uses to hide her self-hatred and try to force herself on people.
Shouya's reaction to what he perceives as Shouko's lack of normal reaction is only aggravated by her constantly trying to become his friend and smiling at him. It's like speaking very calmly and reasonably while arguing with an angry person: that will only make them angrier, not calm them down.
The omission of the teacher is totally revolting, though I get that it's normal in Japanese schools.
It's not honest at all. It's a fake smile. It's clearly explain in the manga, suppressing her feeling and always be kind and smiling was her way to appease people around her.
But in the end it made things worse. It was truly imposible for her suroundings to communicate with her and understand her.
The bullying from young shoya was sadistic, he clearly had fun doing it but in a way it was a failed attempt to communicate with her. He wanted her to express something, that poker face truly disturb him and incite him to double down on the bullying.

Regarding the absence of the teacher, Japan is correct.
I watched both Koe no Katachi and Kimi no Na wa three times. These are entirely separate genres but I'll share with you a bit the differences watching them multiple times in the cinema because it's quite an interesting experience. This is spoiler free for those of you who haven't watched both, and is a bit long so grab a popcorn.
Kimi no Na wa came out in my country long before Koe no Katachi, watched it and absolutely loved it. It was the best film of any kind I've watched, period. It was so good that I decided to take my family with me to watch it, it feels really good that I can watch it again, but I already knew the story so the wow factor was certainly diminished a bit. I still wanted to watch with my friends, so I went for another go. After that, I decided that it's enough. I've got the story, its wow factor isn't really getting into me anymore after that.
Koe no Katachi came out half a year after Kimi no Na wa, and I was waiting patiently for it to air in the cinemas after Kimi no Na wa aired, so at that time I had been waiting for half a year, my expectations for the film was off the charts. The first time I watched it, honestly it's really good, but not what I imagined the film would be. I felt like I missed lots of the details and decided to watch it again to try and understand it better as well as paying more attention to the soundtracks because they're downright genius. Watching it for the second time made me realize that I was indeed missing lots of details I didn't quite get the first time. The film suddenly felt really deep, and It's at this point that Koe no Katachi took the reign of the best film I've watched, period. It then led me wanting to watch it again to further pay attention to how the film plays with visuals and audio. The more details you pick up from the film, the more you understand its beauty. If I have more chance to give it another go, I'd damn give it another go. I really didn't expect the film to have such high rewatch value. I already respect Naoko Yamada for directing K-On with how friendship bonds in slice-of-life can be so powerfully presented, it just makes me admire her much more and I'm really looking forward to her next works.

Kimi no Na wa gave me chills but not enough to make me tear up, even after watching it multiple times. The last scene in Koe no Katachi where Shouya finally finds his redemption and all the X marks in people's faces fall of, I got the strongest possible chills throughout my body and almost made me burst into tears, and I still tear up watching the end of this video. It's the only moment in the film where we see Shouya crying, it really shows how relieved and happy he is. Like what the video says, the soundtrack played during that scene, lit(var), went from a muted piano to full blast orchestra after Shouya uncovers his ears, signalling that he finally hears the beauty of the world around him that he just can't hold up his tears anymore. That one final scene in the film made me almost sleepless for days, I'm not exaggerating that. It then let me to covering the soundtrack, I mean how the hell could I not? It's the best soundtrack in any anime.
And now I see you here! Haha, I literally just watched your latest video. Briefly, I'll say it was amazing. Now as for Koe no Kotachi, the amount of pure emotion and power it brings into it's audience matches the same feelings felt in the film. It's brilliantly crafted and the little additions to scenes also reflect what the characters truly feel, the barriers they face, and what outcome they desire. I found myself questioning what Shouya's motives really were, though I was cheering him on and hoping he'd be able to move past his experiences in the past. The exact same thing for Shouko. I KNEW that she had struggled just as much, if not, more so then Shouya. I could understand that it's incredibly difficult to move on from that sort of thing. "Do I deserve this?" "Can I even move on?" It was clear that the problems they had ran very deep and that what they wanted themselves may have been unclear, even to them.
And don't get me started on the music... Haha, it reflects each and EVERY moment perfectly, being a very simple tune on the piano, or otherwise. And you can hear some sound effects in the background which add the perfect amount of ambiance too. Now, where can I find that OST? Maybe I'll watch your covers again! For the 14th time.
The final scene, with LIT playing was breath taking. I felt the weights of struggle left and fly away, just as I'm sure Shouya and Shouko did too. That scene is above all else, my favorite moment in ANY movie, EVER.

Kimi no Nawa got to me more than Koe no Katachi. But the latter is still a good movie and is more relatable. I do understand the feelings of Nisimiya, that having a disability is a burden to everyone around you. And the theme of suicide is maturely done here.

You really caught the essence of Naoko Yamada's directing style. I want to thank you for showing the community that Anime is not merely a medium to entertain people. By analyzing an Anime you show the community that Anime should be treated as a true form of art, a medium which conveys a message by the artist, here it would be the director with their amazing staff. For this, I thank you.
As a person with Asperger's, I feel connected to this story. Sure, it's not exactly the same as being deaf, but in both situations, you have trouble understanding what other people mean and you have trouble getting a message through. In one situation because you can't hear and have trouble speaking because of it, in the other one, because your brain is wired differently.
Those troubles fade with time as you learn more about the world around you...but they don't disappear totally.
Fortunately, I wasn't as bullied as her. I would never say I had a bad childhood, but I still know what it is to not be understood by people around you and to have trouble understanding them too.
So yeah. To me, best anime movie. (And I would even say Best anime, period, subjectively speaking)
NB. : Yeah, I know every human has this kind of problem, but it's usually a different degree and a different tendency

I have Asperger's as well. For years, I thought that since I could since I had poor communication skills, no one would like to hear me speak. As a result, I isolated myself. Even years later, I still have trouble loving myself and putting myself out there. After watching this movie, I ache because this movie reminds me of the importance of reaching out and loving myself. I want to know people and be known.
thank you is all i can say, i have asperger and i feel guilty for bullying others because of academic excellence and hating myself for letting my body suffer physical trauma from bullying because of what i understand from others and what i say to others, when you are wired differently, you feel as if you should not say anything, instead of the X's on people's face, i see it on my face, my mouth, and i see my body hating me for my actions
The story isn't just about being deaf, it's about having disabilities about understanding people and having disabilities physically (like being deaf) it teaches us that everything is gonna be ok..

I didnt sob during the ending scene. I sobbed after, realizing it was truly over. I was stuck between laughing and crying and one thought kept me from stopping: you can love yourself. This movie was the first to make me want to change my life for real. To not speak ill of myself, and try to love myself. This will always be one of my favourite movies. Helped I was watching it with a close friend who could translate nonsubbed japanese text and fill me in on subtle stuff in the movie... i think we grew closer hearing eachother cry lol.

this is exactly what i felt by the end, when the faint light covered the screen, all that i could think about was that i *can* get better and things *will* be better eventually. I can learn to love myself.
One of the few movies I've seen that I can say is honestly perfect. I was crying multiple times throughout, and flat out sobbing by the end. I'd never even heard of this movie before, but was really intrigued by the trailer on netflix, and ended up being completely blown away by the animation, symbolism, story, soundtrack, *everything.* I'll never regret watching this masterpiece.
That scene in the classroom where Shouko explains in desparation just how hard she is trying has me in tears every time. It's heart-breaking the first time you see it, but it's gut-wrenching when you think back to it after the movie ends. What a fantastic movie.
"I lub moon"..... God that part just breaks me. She's saying "I love you" you twit! But the message got across eventually. What a beautiful movie.

@@janchovanec8624 simpler logic, which you can see by watching the subs instead of dubs : she said "suki" (like) but he heard "tsuki" (moon). Nishimiya is consistent in her mispronounciation, props to the japanese VA and director especially. Her "s" tends to sound like "t", "ts", or "ch". When she told Yuzuru to eat breakfast, she pronounced "asa-gohan" as "atagohan" sort of

Koe no Katachi was particularly evocative for me. My aunt is deaf mute, and she lived in this country during the facism, system that discriminates disabled people. She was put into some bullying situations featuring in the movie, wich remembers me to the stories she and my grandma told me about how they survived and defended themselves, she is one of the most handsome people I have the opportunity to speak to, sometimes I get lost in the gestures she and my grandma make while talking in their language. I thought Yamada wasn't capable of speaking about the past, but whoa, she fucking did it. Thanks Jack, I was expecting this so much.

I still remember when I first heard about this story when CHIBI rant about how he hated the protagonist after reading the first chapter and saying nothing would made him change his opinion. But I got to admit that SHOUYA ISHIDA have become one of my favorite characters in all form of media.

Thomas Fernandez Tamako Love Story is (more or less) similar and K-On is great, both from Yamada. Others like Hibike! Euphonium and Nichijou (wich is great comedy) are also pretty good.
apart from those which are very good suggestions i would add haruhi suzumiya. one of my favs and a superinfluecial and classic anime.
Hot damn that final song when he removes his hands from his ears. It’s freaking beautiful. Not even something I realize first time viewing, but the song starts out quiet and soft, like his muffled hearing. Then he removes his hands and it’s fast, it’s sharp, it’s loud. It gives the emphasis of what he hears for seemingly the first time in years.
That. That is the perfect example for using music to emphasize your movie.
the scene I think for me was the most powerful was when he was in the classroom and and Miki told the whole class what he did when he was younger and he almost puked cause he couldnt face the regret. The shakiness when he said you did it to meant he blamed himself entirely but he was scared of what they would think of him. I've been in situations like that. I won't go into detail but I felt like shoya in that scene scared, nervous, hated.
i like to think that shoya was blind to the beauty of the world. the end is him finally being able to realize the beauty that exists. what gave me this idea was that in the beginning of the film, there’s that dot with light shining through it. at the end, the dot appears again, but this time, it opens up and shows the beauty of the sky. it’s a beautiful film.
For the written words in the hospital, I don't think it was their conversation after they first met.
I interpreted it as Shouya's true emotions resonating to Shouko, as she never knew he was suicidal as well.
Another theory is that Shouya wrote that in the back of the notebook he gave back to her.
Actually, Shoya wrote a suicide note in Shouko's notebook, that was the reason he didn't want her to read it after he gave it back to her (hence it falling in the water at the bridge).
This is slightly more explained in the manga. Apart from that i agree that the written words in Shouko's 'dream' are a representation of their feelings to one another, especially after she realised he does care for her when saving her from her suicide attempt.

This is such a comfort film for me, whenever I get anxious or worried I put on this film. It reminds me how I can change and about forgiveness. I’m so glad I saw this film. It saved my life
I know it's a bit of a meme to call this and Your Name the best anime movies ever, but they are amazingly crafted.
Still haven't beat The Disappearance of Haruhi for me though. XD
The movie is well crafted and connects with the viewer on an emotional level, but it has many shortcomings in details for everything that is even a bit off the main road. Haruhi is amazing, but you need the knowledge of the other parts of the franchise to connect to it.

They are all fantastic films (I LOVE the Haruhi movie) but you need to watch some Hosoda and Kon films. Check out Wolf Children, Millenium Actress, and Perfect Blue.
its pretty ridiculous to call those the best anime films of all time lol. like, films like tekkon kinkreet and honneamise are so blatantly superior to something like your name or koe no katachi on every level its not even up to debate anymore, and the haruhi television show so overwhelmingly stomps the film that it might as well not even be considered

My apologies for the ridiculously long absence! I should've made an update video to let you all know, but long story short, between lab work, a full-time out-of-state internship, visting family, etc., I've had no time to work on videos. I actually wrote this script back in May, but only now finished putting the video together.
I'd like to say this means I'll be back to a regular schedule, but that likely won't happen until I get back to school in mid-August. That doesn't mean I won't do anything between now and then, though! I've already wrote most of the script for a spring video (yes, I know it's summer) and hope to get that out sometime around the last week of July, since next week I'll be on vacation.
Thanks for sticking with the channel over these last few months despite the dearth of content! I have a number of really intriguing ideas ready to go, so please look forward to that! Something about this movie just... Makes me feel proud of being alive... This is the best film I ever saw, aswell as the manga.
Man that eye aversion from Shoya reminds me of myslef. For totally different reasons but ultimately for the same reason. That really hit home when I realized I do the same thing.
As someone once comment this film was said "This the best film human ever made."
The line of story and tears rly connect us, Never being bored of watching this (also im watched this movie since the released of the movie and keep rewatching it when i have a bad day)

My hopes towards humanity is recharged after watching this
Ive read the manga a while before the movie was announced and as it was announces as was really excited about it. Then I watched it and was disappointed because it was not able to present the characters the way they were in the manga. A whole plotline is cut out which was needed to understand the sidecharacters more which I thought was not good. But it was me who didn't get it.
Again and again, an adaptation is solely an interpretation of the source material. And I was totally absord in seeing the beautiful story of the manga adapted that I didn't pay attention to the meaning of the movie as its own entity. How foolish of me.
Thank you UTS for opening my eyes again. It really hit me hard to realise how blindfolded I went into this movie. And therefore, good work! I wish you to widen my perspective in the future. Thank you. And also congratulations to 50k subs. You earned it!
Yari On I feel the exact same way, that scene in the movie where he just dumps on them all for barely knowing him didn't leave an impact because we knew nothing, there was no development between the characters thus making it pointless. This show should have been a 12 episode anime to pace it out better.
Ummm what? Yeah. Storywise this was certainly a problem.
But again, after seeing UTS analyses I see why they did it this way. And now I am glad they did it this way. In a 12 episode series I am not too sure if they would have been able to pull it off the as they did it in this movie. The sidecharacters would have had more development in a series. but then the whole impact of a two hours movie with its astonishining animation that practicly tells more about the story then the characters would be lost. This interpretation of communication would not have worked how it does now. You get my point?
Ummm what? My I ask was there development of the relationship between the side characters in the manga.
Sonic Badass Yes... there was a whole story they just skipped, also they glossed over the childhood scene, it was basically a clip montage. Then flash forward to meeting again like nothing happened after he tried to kill himself...... like duh fuck? In the manga it was coherent, he bullied her, slowly lost his friends, they fought, she moved, and then he became the target for bullying them we flash to him in highschool then he tries to kill himself. The movie just expects you to know what's going on as they speed through all this and expects you to care within the first 10 mins making you think you should care about this guy who tried to kill himself. Then out of nowhere Skouko wants to as well.... in the manga it was established and developed. In the movie it just takes key moments mixes up the beginning and then crams the rest in roughly 2 hours.
Ummm what? You're greatly over exerting the level and importance of their development imo, but to each their own. I felt the film was all the more focused and better for it.
Koe no Katachi was the third anime that have ever made me cried, the first one which connected to me so much and I think to some of us can relate to Shoya and Shoko. Both of them hate themselves for their incapability of communicating with other people. Sometimes we fail to talk to our friends, we fail to understand them, fail to find the right words to say when they are in pain and we couldn't help to blame ourselves for that. This movie is beautiful and it stroke my heart deeply. And thank you, Under The Scope, for making this video, it made me realize how much of a masterpiece this movie truly is.

i cant remember a time when i watched this and didn’t cry
I had incredibly high expectations for this film, and after watching it for the first time in theatres, I couldn't help but be a little disappointed. The pacing was weird, the romance seemed underdeveloped, and the resolution wasn't quite was I was expecting. It still got me emotionally hooked (I was tearing up during Shoko's last apology), but it wasn't exactly what I thought it'd be..... Then, a couple days later, I went to watch it again. This time with a much clearer understanding of the films content and its purpose. I began to understand some of Yamada's choices as director, why certain scenes were framed in certain ways - and as a result - the film resonated with me much more, I thought about times I wish I'd said things, or wasn't sure how to express my feelings....I'm the kind of person who dwells on seemingly trivial interactions from the past, constantly thinking about what I should've said or done, but rarely ever learning from it. I think this film resonates with me because it shows that everyone has the sense of uncertainty about them, as they try to piece together all the nuances of people's actions to try to understand them, and I think that's something you communicated excellently in this video, all the tiny details Yamada used to not only show how the characters were feeling, but how she feels herself.
Essentially I'm trying to say that I loved this video, the editing, the writing, the music, everything. It enriched my understanding of the film, its characters, and most importantly other people, so thanks for that.
MexicanJesus The movie really suffers from cutting SO MUCH content compared to the manga. It even creates pacing issues and plot holes that are not present in the source material. A 12 episode show would have been the better choice.
I haven't personally read the manga, but I've heard this is a fairly common argument among those who have. While I can understand the argument, and I certainly don't think I would've enjoyed it any less had it been a TV series, I do think it should be commended that Kyoto Animation/Naoko Yamada managed to take an already existing story with it's own ideas and messages, and translate it to an entirely different medium - which severely decreases it's length - while still maintaining a coherent story with a worthwhile message. There are definitely ways different elements of this film could've been expanded on (Something a TV series could've done), however I don't think the film should necessarily be discredited because of that. This is Naoko Yamada's take on the story and the characters....it should be expected that taking a preexisting work and giving an entirely different company the task of producing it in an entirely different medium, would change at least a few things. I won't say that this film is inherently better or worse than the than the manga ( as I'm obviously not qualified to do so), but that it's simply different.

The movie has an amazing use of sound, visuals and character acting but the pacing in it is really bad. But it's not a romance, it's more of a coming of age story. You could even interpret Shouko's romantic feelings as her not understanding her emotions due to her past.
Yeah, I was more referring to my expectations based on the scene shown in the trailer...so I was expecting it to be more significant in the film. As I watched the film for the second time I began to understand the point of the film, and it wasn't as much of an issue to me. While I definitely wouldn't have been upset if they'd implemented a romantic element to the story, I understand that it isn't the focus of this film, nor was it intended to be. I do like your point though, as I was having a bit of difficulty understanding the point of the scene, given it's lack of focus, and I can kind of understand how it could be interpreted as a way of demonstrating the idea of expression/communication that the film highlights. And yeah, even with my appreciation for the production values, thematic representation, and characters...the film does still fell a bit disjointed at times, it isn't much, but it definitely has a detrimental impact on the film as a whole.

One part of anime I love is names have meaning. Shoya Ishida translates to "It is good". Which I thought was a fun way of saying he was good at heart all along.

Interesting to see so many takes on this movie, also this video. Although some other themes felt more important.
For instance, the fish seen so much in the movie, are Koi fish, along with the myth and legend of The Dragon River, where Koi fish attempts to swim to the top of a gated waterfall, or head of the river, The Dragon Gate. It is said that among millions of Koi fish who attempt to reach it, only very few does, those truly dedicated and a sense of perseverance, achieve it, overcome their obstacles, and thus transforms into a Dragon. At the very end, we see The Gate in front of Shoya, the entrance to the school festival, when he finally overcomes his obstacle. We see two silhouettes, in the shimmer of light, far away, they have transformed, as they have fully overcome their obstacles, accepted themselves and thus able to truly accept others as well.
Shoya's suicidal tendencies, seemed to be neglected from this video, albeit significantly important, as it also tells us about how most actually plan their suicide long ahead of time, and both in the movie, and manga, does so too, you can actually see Shoko planning her suicide, from the moment Shoya more or less implodes in self hatred, after the Kawai(worst kind of human being) incident. As Shoya had planned his, to do select tasks, before ending his life, he luckily changed that initial fate, thanks to unexpected interaction with Shoko, whom he went to meet, to apologize and at the very least amend a part of his past grievance.
Shoko never knew Shoya had attempted suicide prior to everything. Yet there is a clear sense of melancholy over both, the whole movie, and especially over Shoko midways through, up till her attempt. Which we actually also get a full glimpse of, in the beginning, of Shoya's train of planning, till the day, of the attempt.
Then again, the Manga does a way better job at portraying Shoya's character and his inner thoughts, along with grasping the plights and more importantly, THE WHOLE CLASS WAS BULLYING, including the teacher, and when they scapegoated Shoya, they simply kept on with it, it's a scary thought, and which is also why I HATE utterly loathe Kawai, she is the worst of human beings, which sadly there are many of. But of course there are plenty like her, and only the manga truly attempts to represent, what often goes on in these scenarios, to a more unsettling effect. I suppose they cut off the class being part, and leap of logic people often make, to excuse themselves, sadly too many, most of us have done at least once in life, but there is always a choice, to stop doing it, and attempt to change, or at the very least be honest and truthful to one's own evil deeds.

shoya was scared to let go of the roller coaster rails because its his representation of how hes scared to truly let go of his life the fact that this is placed near the end of the movie before other important scenes where everybody starts hating him again is amazing

10:39 I noticed for the first time that one of her earrings is ripped off that was surely done Shoko’s mom. That was just heartbreaking.
I can never watch the part when they're kids and she wipes the insults off his desk and when they fight and she says shes trying her best without straight up sobbing, just seeing the scene coming gets me teary eyed, she trying so hard to communicate and he doesnt want and refuses to hear her, and shes just trying so hard at life and it's all crumbling.
I also love the themes of duality between the characters especially shoya and shoko, you see her suicide coming because you've watched shoya experience all the same things that lead him to almost committing suicide

What an amazing analysis!
I’m currently on a binge of slice of life anime films that I’ve wanted to watch for some time. Ive seen Your Lie in April, I want to eat your pancreas, A silent voice and now I’m on to garden of words and anohana. Of the ones I’ve seen, this was by far my favourite and in my opinion the best. Probably because of how realistic it is. From the very beginning, the opening 10 minutes I knew I’d be into this film in a way that I wasn’t with the others.
I was gripped by how horrible Ishida treated Shouko and at some points I legit had to pause the film because I was so angry at how such a kind and sweet girl was being treated, all because she was different. And then the fact that despite being the one being bullied, she still apologised to ishida and even cleaned his desk, yet he was still being a cunt to her. “I’m trying my best” when they were in the classroom, legit made me cry
That Ueno chick is a straight cunt and Kawai is the snakeish type you want to avoid in life, had to pause the film during a lot of their scenes too.
I loved the storytelling and the way the film laid out the narrative, it felt like a genuine film, as opposed to an anime film if that makes sense, YLIA had a lot of over the top melodramatic animation and scenes whereas this felt like I was just watching a regular film in anime form
I do wish we could’ve got to see a romance between Ishida and Shouko develop more after the I love you confession, but who knows, maybe that leaves the door open for more Light novels/another film. Great film, 10/10 on MAL and in my top 5 anime

I really like the movie, but i have seen so many videos analyzing the really deep and good parts of the movie while ignoring the shortcomings. Especially the friend characters are missing a lot that makes their action reasonable or at least a bit understandable. They clearly cut a lot to make it fit into the movie runtime (haven't read the soource material).

Yes they did cut quite a bit (I say this as someone who read the manga before watching the movie). That said, the movie did an excellent job at conveying the core themes of the story despite a huge chunk being cut from story. Mashiba Satoshi doesn't feel like a friend, at least not based on what you know from the movie.
That's the biggest blemish I can name about the movie and yet, the movie does the rest of the story so much justice that I overlook that shortcoming.

This movie isn't good, the story is, read the manga, this should have been a seasonal anime.
Ummm what? true I think the movie is still amazing though. the voice actors do an amazing job at portraying how the characters feel. ESPECIALLY shoukos VA shes great at portraying a deaf person trying to speak in a realistic way. Then the pans show a deep meaning along with everything else. EVERY PANEL IN THIS MOVIE IS IMPORTANT. Not to mention the animation is beautiful. I haven't finished the manga but I have enough knowledge of it to believe that they're both good but nothing can top the manga. The movie definitely left a lot out that would've been important to understanding the side characters and connecting with them but I think it was more so trying to focus on the forgiveness and finding happiness after guilt aspect of it
The movie is about finding redemption,forgiveness.They might have just cut parts from the manga but still great anime.

In the manga it's much deeper than that, he was a kid going along with the crowd, but he went too far cuz he was the "leader" then when shit hit the fan they all turned on him and tried to act innocent even though the rest of the class and even the teacher were in on the joke that was the deaf girl. Then when he starts being bullied the whole class is in on it too including the teacher, he felt betrayed by everyone around him which is why the movie tries to shove it in your face that he can't see others as people with a giant X on their face.
Ummm what? I think you have a different Outlook then everyone else. He doesn't feel like he deserves to live because of what he did and is sick of feeling like a terrible human being because of it. He was in grade school so everyone was pretty much dumb and when they got caught blamed it on the one who did the most which led to him being bullied. After a while he felt like an outcast which made him develop strong social anxiety and the BELIEF that everyone hates him when in reality no one has anything against him it's just his thoughts. That's why the X's are over there faces and when they fall he realizes that he's not alone. He meets shoko cause he wants to say sorry before killing himself and in the process develops friendships. Its a story about redemption and believing that even if you made mistakes in the past no one's perfect and you can learn from mistakes. I think both the movie and the manga are beautiful though the manga is better but they all correlate around this story
Kate Anderson And this is why you should read the manga, he doesn't have social anxiety he literally cannot put his trust in another human being. He sees himself as trash and those around him as those who are out to get him. The movie doesn't give you a reason for his "belief" that everyone hates him, you just incorrectly assume he has social anxiety.
