    I hate Miki so much because there are so many people like her in real life who get away with their awful behavior and are never willing to learn because of their own ego. If Miki ever dated, I could only imagine how stressful it would be for the other person who has to deal with her toxicity

      And about the fact that after all she gets away with everything in the movie and is included in the group, which a lot of people are angered about in the comments, yeah, that is sadly how life quite often works. The people who are acting like angels in front of others, but have hell on their mind, most of the time don't get recognized as what they truly are and get defended and never have to own up to the bs they are doing. So this is a very real thing.

      she could've been a good character if she had any kind of character growth or if she existed for any purpose other than causing drama (when there was already a much more compelling source of drama and conflict in shouko's family) but alas
      the same applies to ueno

    • @orwellmushaikwa2591
      @orwellmushaikwa2591 2 місяці тому +4

      Miki is realistic because she's your typical bystander, she represents most people who will allow bad things to happen to someone and feign ignorance/innocence when challenged. She is relatable because she could easily be you or me if we let our egos go unchecked. It is also why we can all relate to having interacted with a lot of people like her. Let's be real, I think there's a Miki in all of us. You're more likely to interact with a Miki irl anywhere you go, whereas someone like Ueno you'd only interact with in prison, unless you are really unlucky, then you have to deal with their abuse irl. I get why people would hate Miki her the most compared to all the other characters, but honestly I think it is pretty dishonest to say that of all the bad characters we get she's the worst.

    For a great movie, my ONLY complaint was those "Friends" who did NOT deserve redemption. They did absolutely nothing to even show they deserved to be friends with Shoya and Shouko. Naoka, Miki, and Kazuki not being a part of the group towards the end would have had ZERO effect on the ending in my opinion. If anything, it would have made things better for Shoya if he confronted ALL of them and made them back off and leave him and Shouko alone for good. . . But no, he's gotta be the one to redeem himself despite not being the only person to have bullied Shouko, and a "good" ending is I guess they all have grown up and forgiven each other. My literal only complaint. I really wish those ""friends" got a taste of their own medicine, but sadly Shoya got the short end of the stick.

    • @dreyri2736

      I think you didn't understand the manga(or maybe you haven't read it). Shoko still wanted to be friends with the others, yes, even Naoka, as if the bullying didn't happen. Everytime Shoya starts to become possesive of Shoko it's really due to him not really understanding her. In fact, most of the characters that are protective of Shoko assume that she never understands what's going on around them unless somebody signs it to her, but the Author explicitly states that that is not true. In fact, shoko is often shown to be even better at interpreting and understanding others than even the ones who can hear. Which is why she hugs Kawai back in her chapter, she knows that Kawai is really talking to herself as much as she is to Shoko. Sahara assumes that Shoko didn't hear her but that's simply not the case and we have clues to support it like when Yuzu explained to Shoko after they got home everything that happened at the bridge and all Shoko did was unenthusiastically say 'thanks' and then get up. She's not completely deaf, and even if she can't hear a thing, she can still read the room and it is probably her disability which causes her to be so good at it.
      Then there's Shoya's friends. The irony of Naoka trying to get Shoya and Shimada back together is that Shoya has been doing the exact same thing with Shoko. He doesn't want to forgive them. But Shoko forgave him.

      @aqup_ Shoko wanted to forgive Naoka. Well, she didn't really think she was in the wrong, but she said herself that she thought Naoka was the only one to understand her. And fromt he time Naoka receives the letter, up until Shoya falls, they appear to get on good terms. The manga doesn't explicitly show it beyond a simple wink that Naoka gives to Shoya but you have to understand that the manga is written almost entirely from Shoya's largely jaded perspective.

      I agree with this but I think that near the end, they had somewhat redeemed themselves bc they show that even people that disliked shoya didn’t want him to die. This is shown when kazuki saved shoya from the water when he saved shoko. Also the anime didn’t do a great job explaining this but naoka liked shoya so at least she experienced some crap in the manga. Still an incredible story tho

Only difference is that Ueno was up front and straight forward with her dislike towards Shoko while Miki acts as if she could do no wrong and victimizes herself once called out on it. Even when they got older she still placed blame on Shoya for bullying Shoko and whenever I think about it, I wonder did anyone else besides Shoya apologized or at least reflected on what they did wrong when they were kids? Unless they did it off screen, I'm convinced that they never thought that they were in the wrong even years later

      Agree. In the Manga Miki is much more unlikable than Ueno in my opinion. Though Ueno is a terrible person, but at least she's honest about it in high school. But in Mikis case, even in her high school years she's just denying everything and is putting the blame on Shoya and the others, even on the bridge she still wants to be the one in the absolute right. I mean, instead of sincerely apologizing and accepting that she is not a perfect angel and she also is in the wrong like anybody else, she just tells Shoya not to bully people if he wants to be liked, that's such a stupid argument to say in this situation. As someone who just finished the Manga, it's really cool talk about this character that I see as the most annoying in A Silent Voice.

    • @Mysticist6641
      @Mysticist6641 5 місяців тому +122

      @@DeltaKnight337 Also the way everyone berated Naoka when she got rightfully pissed at Miki. Ueno is terrible, but she still reflects on stuff and acknowledges that her behaviour isn't appropriate. Her concern for Shoya's well being is genuine, and though her blaming Shoko is unwarranted, in the end she admits that although she can't like Shoko, the way she treated Shoko was harsh (it would have been nice if she had said it directly to Shoko instead of telling Shoya, but it's true to her character that she didn't). In fact, in the bridge scene she had tagged along to apologise. Miki on the other hand acts like a righteous saint, when Shoya asked her not to tell Satoshi about his past yet, she gets all horrified and 'heroic' lol. This wasn't her story to tell, she had ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with it. Shoya was trying to be friends with Satoshi and should have gotten the chance to tell it himself in his own time. The way he was about to puke after Miki outed his secret is just an understatement to the mental trauma Shoya has faced, and Miki was still insensitive about it. Her way of apologising wasn't any better, she basically said "I'm sorry for what I did, but you were the one who caused all this." And Miki acted like she was Shoko's bestie lmao, saying that she was horrified by how everyone made fun of Shoko, and said that Sahara didn't do anything when Naoka made fun of Sahara and Shoko. It's like BITCH SAHARA WAS GETTING BULLIED!! YOU WEREN'T! WHY DIDN'T YOU DO ANYTHING? Even Naoka got annoyed after Miki didn't apologise properly. The only likable thing Miki did was defending the group when Naoka was calling them cringe when they met at Shoya's recovery. Ironically, Naoka was the one who was at the hospital the most, even more than Shoko (tho she didn't let Shoko visit either lol) even sacrificing some of her work shifts to stay by Shoya's side the whole time. Not saying she's a good person or anything, but I love Naoka's character.

      @@DeltaKnight337 a teenager isn't a terrible person, they're children stumbling around figuring out how life works and how their actions hurt or help one another. Those are the years that decide and shape the kind of person you WILL be as an adult, so I can't agree with you on Ueno being a terrible person. She's changing, and struggling with it, but still changing. I think it's just a bit unfair to use such strong language for children characters. We give grace to children to learn and grow, it's part of being an adult. The only person Miki is hurting at the end of the movie/manga is herself with her rigidity, there's still hope ofc, there's always hope to change, but it'll be so much harder once she's stuck in her ways and the behaviors she cemented in her teen years. This is a reminder to teenagers: hold each other accountable, self-policing in your age range is crucial to how you'll act and react in the real world.

    • @DeltaKnight337

But second, and that's coming from an teenager the same age, Ueno just comes of as a terrible person. I know that she will change in the future and has in the of the manga. The things Ueno did in the story, for me, are things a bad person does. You don't have to be an adult to see that. I know teenagers do stupid stuff, but in my honest opinion, teenagers my and her age should already know that those things are terrible things and to never do those things.

    Shoya only bullied shoko becaude he saw everyone else do it - everyone, the students and the homeroom teacher, that it was a huge burden for them to evolve their lives + cater to shoko because of her disability. Like if shoko was to be involved, everyone had to either write in her book or just simply learn sign language.
    The homeroom teacher sets the mood + mutters how it was unnecessary, the entire class were against the idea about it, too.
    Then the moment someone took interest, they didn't want to feel bad for not trying - so they bullied the one person who was genuiely interested (she even learned it, inspite shoko no longer bejng in her life after transfering)
    No one wanted to feel guilty or to be blamed, so it was easier to out cast shoko cause evovling themselves with her would mean it was "too much effort" + shoya saw that everyone was tired of her, so he made an a** out of himself to "lighten" the mood.
    Sure, he got a laugh out of everyone, but it genuiely went too far. But no one stopped shoya, some even participated because they were just getting a good laugh out of it.
    I feel the lesson was to take responsibility for your own actions - but i also feel like they should've taught "not everyone can be forgiven - nor do they change" cause no one apologized to shoko. Shoya changed cause he felt awful the moment he was in her shoes + the consequences of actions not only affected him, but his mother too.
    What about everyone else? Do they even know what she went through? What shoya went through? They probably didn't even think twice or even go "did what we did all those years ago really effect you like that? I had no idea" even if they sympathized + empathized, they should of had their moments of either feeling what shoko/shoya felt or realize they were never gonna change - so they didn't deserve to be forgiveness or at least, not be part of their lives anymore + moving forward

      No. In the manga he shouts in her ear the moment she sits down after her introduction. But yeah, he does also notice that everyone gets tired of her. In the case of Naoka, she felt incredibly thankless despite being the one helping Shoko the most. And I mean, Shoko's presence really did disrupt the classroom. I think the teacher really just wished she would have gone to a special school that was actually suited for her, but her mother insisted that she'd go to normal classes (and shoko wanted to do it as well). I think the teacher just ended up being really irritated with Shoko's mother, there's clues that indicate that that is the case. I mean, her mom comes across as a bit of a battle-axe and he probably had to deal with her on more than one occasion.
      Also, it was not "the moment he was in her shoes". He continued to despise her until she left. And if we go back to the teacher, considering some of the things people say about wanting the others to feel the consequences, doesn't that make the teacher correct then when he says that all the trouble Shoya went through ended up being good for him? (I'm not saying I believe that. It's a purely socratic question)

      @@dreyri2736 I agree that kids with special needs should study in special schools. It's not "segregation", these schools were designed for such kids to help them to study and to socialize. Ordinary schools don't provide such environment for them. In my country (Russia), the ministry of education decided to follow the "inclusivity" trend and just lumped kids with special needs with ordinary kids. The result was afwul. For example, I read the story when an autistic child with big behavior problems was put into an ordinary school. He was breaking lessons by screaming and beating the furniture, he was beating and biting other kids, he didn't listen to the teacher, no matter how many times they tried to calm him. And what was the result? This kid was tremendously bullied by his classmates, because he prevented them to study.
      I don't say that it was Shoko's fault that she was bullied, but her mother should have definitely put her in the school for kids in special needs since the beginning, instead of putting her into the ordinary school, which didn't provide her an environment for her study, and then just expect everyone in this school to accept her child. Parents like Shoko's mother do exist in real life. They think that their disabled children will become "normal" the moment they go to the ordinary school, but of course, it doesn't happen and parents blame other children and school for not providing the environment for their children and for not accepting them, instead of blaming themselves for their mistakes. Anime/manga was very realistic for portraying this problem.

      @@peachesandcream22 I should clarify: according to the author, it wasn't Shoko's mother who insisted on her going to a normal school but it was rather Shoko's wish to do so. I learned about this after the comment I made. Regardless, I don't think it justifies anything that she went through. The teacher could have done better (then again, I have no experience teaching. But he definitely did not crack down hard or soon enough on the bullying. However... I do have experience with elementary schoolers and even I know how hard it can be to control them). I just think it's a very difficult situation overall and I think many people simplify it out of anger. We forget that everyone else has their own limited perspective on the world around them and form opinions based on that. We cannot read each others minds. It's like what Marlowe says in Heart of Darkness "We live as we dream; alone."
      Our perspectives are like whole worlds in themselves.

    Ueno at least owned her own faults and as they got older she realized solely blaming Shoya was unfair and wrong. I appreciate her calling everyone out for it on the Bridge. She is a bad person, but I can respect that she is honest with herself and others. Miki makes me so mad. She laughed and had her own part to play, even if her bullying wasn't in a way Shoko would notice. By laughing while saying "cut it out" and not actually standing up for Shoko she fed into the encouragement that both Ueno and Shoya got from it all. She is a "look at me" and "I can do no wrong type" . I get so angry by this character, but I think that's what she's meant to do. The fact that, instead of having a private conversation with Shoya about their past she announced what he had done as a literal child to the entire class was infuriating. She caused him to have an anxiety attack and for him to get physically ill. She that type of person that is good at faking empathy, but when it comes to actual empathy she is void of it. She deserved NO apology from Shoya. None of this is to say Shoya was perfect, he obviously made mistakes, but everyone who painted him as the sole problem was unfair. Though I do love the bridge scene because I think this is the moment Shoko truly realized that Shoya was struggling as much as her, but she unfortunately (and incorrectly) felt she was the cause of his struggles.
    Also re-watching the movie recently, I realized Shoya is the only one who really changed out of all of them. Ueno was still mean and ready to tease Shoko, Shoko didn't stand up for herself or admit how she was feeling, Miki still refused to own her own faults, and Sahara, still runs from confrontation.

    I honestly think her complicity in the bullying of Shoko is the least of her problems. She's extremely insecure and it's almost like she doesn't actually have any opinions of her own (especially when it comes to Satoshi). Maybe she was being honest when she said that she was too scared to scold Shoya because she thought he'd bully her as well, it's definitely understandable. But I think she was also really scared of losing the validation of her friends by going against them. Kawai is a person who sees herself through the eyes of others. This can probably lead to some serious self-loathing. If she perceives enough people hating her, then she will probably start to hate herself.
    That being said, she does seem to change in some way by the end. Whereas before she was always very diplomatic and mild to everyone and especially to Naoka whenever she did something mean, she becomes much more assertive and combative by the end, at least toward Naoka, which is probably the attitude she should have had when she was in elementary school.
    I'm serious. Compare Kawai from 6th grade to the one at the culture festival, the one who aggressively scolds Naoka when she makes a rude remark. Do you think the Kawai from elementary would have done anything close to that?

      that's a good point, she does call naoka out more following the bridge scene. i guess i initially took that in a cynical way - like, shouya and shouko had both almost died, and naoka acted horribly during that time, so i didn't think it was odd for kawai to scold her a bit. but maybe this was the start of seeing herself less through others' eyes and acting based on what she thinks is right.

    • @dreyri2736
      @dreyri2736 5 місяців тому +2

      @@weranoutofgoodusernames3105 Yeah. However, upon thinking about it some more and rereading the manga, I'm left more unsure about her. I don't think she has started to see herself less "through the eyes of others". She still seems to base her personality on what Satoshi wants. BUT... That part where she just says "This is me. This is what I want to do" keeps me up at night. I'm not sure what she means by that.
      Also, her newfound assertiveness may have come a bit too late in my opinion. Or, I feel the author implies that since nobody seems to take her scolding seriously and Satoshi just tells her to let it go already. This supposed change of character is not validated in any way by anyone and she just ends up looking confused, wondering, asking why Shoya, and everyone else, is suddenly ok with Naoka. I just feel like there's a lot of unactualized potential in her. I think that part in her chapter where she monologues to Shoko hints that she has some very strong insecurities about herself. I'd pay to read another story centered on her. I mean, she may be basic and vapid, but that doesn't mean she can't have an interesting story.

    While I do agree with your complaints for Miki (I despised her greatly), I would like to argue that Miki is not only the worst character in the movie, but also poorly written. Note that I will only be talking about the movie depiction, since I have never read the manga.
    On top of her narcissism, inflated ego, and victim complex, Miki never gets development or anything resembling a character arc. No one in the movie ever really confronts her about her involvement in bullying Shoko. I mean, in one scene, she pretended to sing in choir practice knowing that Shoko would be looking for her cue, and ended up making her embarrass herself by singing too early. So, she's not only an enabler, but an active bully as well.
    It would've been nice if Miki got her consequences for her narcissism because that would have truly completed her arc and strengthened her role as the foil to Shoko, who was eventually rewarded for her selflessness and kindness by making up with Shoya and getting new friends.
    But not only do we not get that, but Miki even gets to be included in the ending with everyone happy and believing that they're all friends now. It's kinda sickening to watch, since one could imply that being a narcissistic cow like Miki will not bring any consequences.
    Ueno was bad (and I still think her "development" was lazily written; learning sign language to call someone an idiot does not make you "nicer"), but at least she eventually admitted she was in the wrong. But nope, not for Miki I guess.

  • @vanillaextract4135
    @vanillaextract4135 5 місяців тому +5

    The thing that I think is most frustrating about Miki is that, at least from the impression I got, she genuinely does BELIEVE everything she says. She’s completely convinced herself that she did not do anything wrong, that the bullying was all Shoya. And nothing anyone else says, no evidence they present, is going to make her change her mind. It can’t. That door is bolted shut.
    And honestly, that’s human nature. We all do it at some point. We don’t WANT to think of ourselves as bad people, so we (consciously or subconsciously) twist narratives in our heads to reassure ourselves that we aren’t in the wrong. It’s a defense mechanism, to protect our own sense of self.
    But if you never learn to push past that impulse and really look at yourself, then you never grow. And if you never grow - well, other people probably aren’t going to want to be around you.

    Ngl I think she's poorly written, she has no character arc, doesn't apologize to Shouko, and never takes accountability for her actions. All she does is cry whenever she gets called out. Just because she wasn't as bad as Shoya or even Ueno doesn't mean she wasn't complicit in the bullying of a deaf girl. Plus even Miyoko admits that she was afraid of both Miki and Ueno, in my opinion that says a lot

    I always compare the difference between Ueno and Kawai with Janis and Cady from Mean Girls. Specifically at that one scene when Janis says "at least me (and Regina) KNOW we're mean"

  • @nhihoang8530
    @nhihoang8530 3 місяці тому

    I keep saying this! To me Kawai is the type of bully that’s scary cause no matter how you call her out on her actions she will hide behind all her “nice acts” and pulls out her fake tears or fake hurt feelings which would get people on her side.They’re more manipulative and gaslits a lot. And the fact she got away with no consequences really bothers me. At least with Ueno you can always depend on her to be horrible but with Kawai it’s a mental and social battle with the majority siding with her rather. The scene when Kawai runs up to shoko giving out to her for trying to jump, acting like she cared really creeped me out and boils my blood

    Good I'm not the only one who saw this it's called the Good Samaritan law and I think that can be applied to everyday life if you see something but don't do anything about it you're just as bad and then you're trying to play the innocent card

  • @rachelsato7953
    @rachelsato7953 3 місяці тому

    Dude yes! The movie set up Ueno to be the bad guy saying she wasn’t really sorry for what happened in the past, beating up Shoko, and just being generally kinda a pissy, mean character. But I feel like at least she knows she’s mean and admits to it, and she sorta redeems herself by learning sign language a bit. Miki was always by far my least favorite character always acting like a perfect, kind, sweet girl, playing the victim, and not ever taking responsibility. And like the video said, I feel like she never would have redeemed herself if it hadn’t been for her boyfriend wanting to be friends with shoko and ishida. And now that people are friends again and everything is forgiven I bet she’s going to pat herself on the back for being a good, kind person and being part of that forgiveness and being able to forgive the bullies (since she plays victim). Like I would 100% rather deal with a mean person who knows they’re mean than a person whos mean and tries to act innocent and nice.

    you also forgot to mention how in the movie, during the scene where they're practicing for a singing competition miki purposefully opens her mouth without making a sound when shoko looks over so she begins to sing off key from everyone else before "coming to her rescue". to me this shows how she's willing to manipulate the situation to her advantage so she can be seen as this saint that helps the "unfortunate" while in reality she's nothing more than a two faced snake willing to do anything to save her reputation and herself

    Was Shota guilty of bullying Shoko? Yes. But I also felt that it’s incredibly easy to throw the “ringleader” under the bus to absolve any part any others may have had in the bullying. That also includes any adults who knew and chose to do nothing until it reached a breaking point

  • @barbararab6390

    Ueno at least was honest about being a bitch. She was never really two faced.

    Compared to Miki, Ueno is straightforward & protective, often jumping to defend others, though unfortunately was protective of the wrong person (young Shoya). She misunderstood Shoko as a fake, sly girl pretending to be weak & hiding behind adults. Hence their ferris wheel conversation, Ueno tried to get Shoko to be more 'real' by admitting Shoko has hatred too, hoping to despise her less, but got frustrated when Shoko didn't respond as expected. When Ueno snapped near the hospital, she thought Shoko was willing to victimize herself by jumping, which had repeatedly caused trouble for Shoya. All that said, if Shoya hadn't started the bullying, there would be no 'faking weak' moments, adults wouldn't have to step in, and Ueno and Shoko might have grown up as great friends.
    Miki, on the other hand, isn't quite a narcissist. She lacked charisma, wasn't courageous, easily a simp around Mashiba (not something a narcissist would do imo), & even showed some remorse at the end. Her lack of self-awareness is common; easily seeing faults in others but not in herself. She was more of a brat who thought she was holier than thou, riding on the high of being seen as 'perfect' by her peers. We've all met these kinds of people in our lives, question is whether they have grown out of the high, or grown into a real narcissist
    Overall, I personally find the settings and characters in A Silent Voice pretty realistic. The franchise reflects well on our society and maybe even on ourselves, whether we realize it or not

    As someone who was bullied a lot, I would say that Shoya and Naoka are the worst because of their upfront aggressiveness. I could ignore cowards like Miki and Kazuki. Honestly these two probably wouldn’t be as interested in bullying if it weren’t for Shoya and Naoka who explicitly enjoyed it.

    • @doldfamily9983
      @doldfamily9983 3 місяці тому +3

      I just want to point something out, in case you didn't notice. It is not only that Miki didn't stop the bullying but do you remember that scene where she was moving her mouth during choir when the song hadn't started yet and then Nishimiya, who was next to her, started to try to sing because of this. Obviously, the classmates were annoyed but then Miki actually pretended to be nice and help Nishimiya by saying that Miki will help her sing properly next time. So she *is quite interested in bullying* and in this case, embarrassing Shoko during choir practice, if it helps her look good and has no consequences for her. This particular thing she did in choir which I mentioned just now, *she didn't do because of Ishida and Naoka* , and this is shown as they hadn't actually explicitly enjoyed any teasing or bullying yet.
      Secondly, I am so sorry that you were bullied a lot - that sucks and I hope that your life is better now.

    • @wahoumu
      @wahoumu Місяць тому

      @@doldfamily9983 I didn’t say Miki has no interest in bullying. Miki is highly narcissistic and careful about maintaining her “good person” image. I believe she wouldn’t bother and/ or risk engaging in bullying behavior if there was no enthusiastic audience. Miki bullied Shoko because she wanted the attention, validation and acceptance from certain people, namely her friend Naoka.
      Miki would probably only bully Shoko on her own accord if she had a personal grievance towards her. Shoya and Naoka, however, bullied Miki as a “show” to entertain themselves and their peers. Their open behavior encouraged others to join them.

    Most if not all the class was guilty of bullying , not just Ishida. Not excusing Ishida in anyway but he was made the full guy. Honestly the worst character in the film was the class teacher who openly accused Ishida at the beginning. He not only didn't stopped the bullying by his class he gave them a new target by putting all the blame of all of the students' actions, and his inaction, on the loudest individual

    I actually had a friend like this who after I stopped being friends with her because she started dating my 🍇ist friend she tried to deny they were friends which I knew was bs then tried to make it seem like to trying to make her look like a bad person because I stopped being friends with her got the teachers involved told them a completely different story unfortunately the teachers took her side and when I finally had enough and called her out she told everyone I wasn't actual 🍇 because she asked my 🍇ist if he did it and he said no
    Like girl ofc he is gonna say no, yeah anyways I'm honestly still mad everyone made me the problem when I just didn't want to be around someone like that
    Edit: also the person she started dating knew what he did and still was friends with him afterwards and treated me like I was just trying to ruin his life which what kind of backwards logic and mental gymnastics did he have to do, anyways they still say I lied and very few people believed me but yeah I still am pretty bitter about it
