The Thematic Evolution of Isabella's Lullaby

- Опубліковано 30 тра 2019
- Isabella's Lullaby - or at least the melody of it - is an almost omnipresent song within The Promised Neverland who's meaning evolves over the course of the show. This video is a look at each use case, figuring out what it speaks to in each, and then how it evolves to it's final use in the last moments of the show.

I think Isabella insists that Emma give up escaping and instead become a mama because when it was her, she decided to give up and become a mama because she saw no hope of escaping. By making Emma also fail, she reassures herself that she had no other choice, and perhaps the sadness that comes with realizing that she indeed could have found a way as well, is what makes her look so defeated as she looks at the other side of the cliff.
the only difference between Young Isabella and Young Emma is that Young Isabella tried to escape alone, Emma worked with everyone and combined everyones brains and skills and had a plan that was bigger than herself. Maybe we will learn more about Isabella in season 2
But emma escaped with like 20 children It means Load. I am sure ısabella could escape if she had a strong plan but yeah who knows.

She did felt defeated by Emma and fail to make a team to escape...but I think it was too late by Isabelle age to find out the truth to escape.

I never realized that Isabella’s humming while walking Connie was the same as Leslie’s song. The emotional impact from connecting the dots between Leslie’s death, Isabella’s decision to become a mom, her realization that Ray is her son, and now noticing that she hummed it when walking the children to the gate was so complex I find it difficult to explain. By the way she also kept the toys of the children that died in her secret room, I think it’s her way of both honoring those she took to their deaths and reminding herself of the gravity of the things she’s done.
Nit picky I know but she I’m pretty sure she always knew that Ray was her son, she was just surprised that he sang the song
I always think she sings the song to calm her down as she brings the children to their deaths

When Isabelle let her bun loose and wistfully gazed at the forest across her, I was holding my breath. Isabelle always looked clean, precise, and scrupulous in her tight bun. But the moment her long entangled hair glided with the wind, the scene felt raw. It felt genuinely disheveled, gracefully chaotic, and it became clear that her emotions and memories were now deeply intertwined in the core of her character. It was a scene that stuck with me, like a stubborn sticky note, and it truly showed the depth of her character and the quality of the show.

This anime really went in depth with Isabella's character. It's such an emotional thing because while Isabella is a monster who seems to happily and carelessly allow these children to die, she truly does care for them. To her, this is the best possible life she can give them before they're inevitably sent off to become eaten by forces greater than them that they have no chance of escaping from. She decided that her and everyone else's fates were set in stone, and did what she could to survive and to give her children the most ideal life she believed they could experience.

8:24 When I first watched the anime, my first thought was, "Oh dang, is Isabella gonna jump off the cliff?"
This is a great video, I have not noticed how many times the song played. Just one thing, you could use the term "leitmotiv
" insted of "song", that would be more acurrate, given a lietmotiv in music is precisely, a recurrent melodic line that, in a story (originaly opera, but now also film, etc), represents a character, an idea or both, as is the case here. Again, great analysis, see you on the next video. (sorry for the bad english)
just as a remark: 'leitmotif' is the english equivalent of the german (or austrian) 'Leitmotiv'
I think it's really interesting that the song was first about Isabella and how her grief made her give in, because she didn't want to end up like her friends and family; but it turned into a song about Emma whose grief manifested into inspiration to find a way out with her family. Isabella didn't want to put in the effort and took the short way out by taking what she could get, and that's the one thing that separates her from Emma, and what separates the villain from the hero (albeit Isabella is beautifully written and I love her character so much).
This is super interesting. I now see what you mean by enhancing the original work (manga in this case) by animation and sound in an anime adapation; I assume the manga doesn’t mention a lullaby (since, well, there is no sound in a manga).
Great video as always.
The manga did have Ray humming her lullaby, which made Isabella realize that he was her son. So while we can't hear the lullaby, it's there.
Tim Tran I thought this to be the case after making my comment lol else it would’ve been a lot different in the manga.
The only main difference concerning the lullaby is that in the manga Leslie sings the lullaby, he doesn't play

I remember the time when all Promised Neverland osts before the anime was uploaded in UA-cam. The first song manga readers looked for to listen to is Leslie/ Isabella's song. Hearing it at that time, I can already tell it will be emotional

Bruh that cut scene of the lullaby on the first episode was a complete horror, I immediately jumped off my bed when I saw how scary isabella's face was.
*super spoilers here*
Based upon reading the manga, I'm thinking Norman was let go and didn't just slip away in order to start a rebellion. He may be the most intelligent human presence there is as he grows up, intelligent enough to outsmart the demons in many ways. I think the reason that mother and grandmother and many more continue to run these farming compounds for demons is to buy Norman more time to build a big enough force to fight the demons back.
I think he has to betray Emma's promise on saving family in order to save humanity itself.
Even though demons love intelligent brains, I think it will be a fatal flaw and break down their society due to the original brain farmed humans outsmarting them in the end.
The majority of the demon population eat lesser meat with no sense of intelligence what's so ever, only the top and most rich demons eat brains.
that's an interesting way of seeing it, never even had the thought that the mothers and grandmother would plan rebellion
That's an interesting take, but I don't know if that could work considering Peter Ratri was the one who requested Norman and the transaction was out of mama and grandma's hands.
@@Hope-gf6lr so is it possible there is some collusion between Norman and the Ratri clan? Is it possible that maybe Norman's close footsteps with william(aka james) is for a reason? I mean Ratri had killed James and then suddenly Norman is there to take his place. Throughout the series, everyone(although in many places, heartless) had a large reason as to why they had done things a certain way. Although Peter is an antagonist, a good antagonist would have his reasons.
@@MikoSin definitely--my guess is that Norman himself is a Ratri, part of a genetic experiment. Norman's appearance aligns very similarly to the other Ratri we have seen (James, Peter, and most recently Julius) plus his intelligence, manipulation abilities, general shadiness
The Ratri clan is silent about their personal endeavors, they aren't really involved with the farms at all. This is backed up by Norman's comment about how the Ratri has been able to create humans with the DNA found in a single strand of hair for awhile now. If this was common knowledge, it would erase any need for the farms and by extension solve the hunger problem because everyone could have high quality meat (though the Hunger problem is a manufactured crisis made by the elites to keeps the rest of demon society repressed :/)
Because of that, I don't see how the mamas or grandma could know that 1.) James was killed 2.) Norman would escape and by extension 3.) Norman would become William Minerva 2.0. It's a line of logic that is circumstantial, and one the mamas and grandma probably wouldn't reach with their limited knowledge of the Ratri's affairs. It is possible though, and if it did happen it'd be cool.
Norman broke himself and everyone else out of Lambda himself. Him walking in the steps of James isn't a deliberate outcome planned by the mamas and grandma, rather it serves to directly mirror James and Norman, their differences and similarities, and further grow Norman's character.
If I was a kid in any of the farms and I got on top of that wall and someone told me I could go back and be a mother........
I'd jump off the cliff
both endings, emma’s sadness, and normans theme and obviously isabellas lullaby are all incredible
I have a question. (Spoiler alert
It took me 4 hrs yesterday to marathon this series, despite how i loved the story, the only part that i didnt find convincing is... Out of the 3 High Quality children: Emma, Norman, Ray, surely the monster king would want to devour all 3 of them, but Isabella first recommended Norman to become one of the "higher-up's", then she shows intention to prep Emma as a Mama, that leaves only Ray, her own son to be devoured by the King... It doesn't make sense to me, if they are all very smart, she would be more likely to set Ray up for survival given that Ray's nature is similar to her own, that is, to survive with whatever means it takes even if it sacrifices the rest of the family, which contrasts to Emma's belief wanting to save "everyone" and Norman's stance in the middle as he's pondered both possibilities. Tell me if what I said makes more sense.
Just realized it's not much of a spoiler since everything i said was already in the video.
the kids are 'shipped out' according to their age, so I guess Norman is the oldest of all 3, Ray is smart, but certainly not smart as Norman to be chosen ( I am sure the higher ups had the decision to choose Norman, so isabella shouldn't have played a big enough role in that ) and (slight spoiler, if you don't read the manga)
the chosen person wouldn't become a mama but a researcher, so brains are the key factor
@@thu-had5249 thanks for the response, maybe it'll make more sense when I watch how the story unfolds in the coming seasons.
The way I see it Isabella chose the kids to be shipped out in that order to ruin the kids plan of escape. Norman is the smartest one, he plans out the escape, so of course Isabella will need to ship him out first so they can't continue with the plan. Emma is the athletic one, Isabela breaks her leg so now she can't use her strongest ability which is physical strength/athletic strength to help the children run out. Of course will need time to heal while Isabella tries to convince her to be mama. And Ray, well she didn't really need to do anything to him because she knows that Ray gives up easily (kind of like Isabella herself, like mother like son lol). With that it perfectly ruins the children's plan (and hope) to escape. I don't think the demon society picks out who to choose to eat, maybe Isabella who chooses to get shipped out first. Of course the demons will know it will be a kid with perfect score. Sorry if i don't make sense.
@@imdone8518 Hmm I'm somewhat convinced by your analysis in that Isabella intended to break their escape plan. Although if I were her I'd still ship out Norman first to be eaten so that I've completed my duty, that is, to serve a high quality dish, then I'd ship Ray out last for being the higher-up/researcher, even if Ray's IQ is a few points less than Norman's. I'd keep him alive just because it's the mother's instinct to protect their children. But since Isabella didn't choose this way, it could be a way to depict that she has completely surrendered to the cruelty of the reality and thus lost her last bit of humanity? Either way, interesting discussion.
Best song of Winter season.
I want to hear Isabella's Lullaby with just strings. Or even just a good violin version (good audio quality and composition and whatnot)
I learned to play this song on piano and it just sounds absolutely beautiful
God the music in the Promised Neverland made it one of my favorite animes and I extremely thankful that I was able to watch this masterpiece. Hearing the version that Leslie played was amazing, watching Isabella finally giving up and letting her hair down and realizing that in the end....she was never going to win and cutting the ropes all while saying goodbye to the children she raised and loved was beautiful.
This analysis is honestly so deep and beautifully intricate, I don't understand why it doesn't have more views ❤️❤️
This was a really great video!
I love the Promised neverland Soundtrack and am ghlad it gets the attention it deserves
I'm out of words to explain how splendid the song, character, and this series is (also your vid!)
Thank you for making this >_
The song is so beautiful, it always makes me cry and thinking in Leslie that sweet child.
I love when we learned it's origin, when the children scaped, Isabella said "this is my defeat" or something like that and it was because she surrendered to the system while the children fight back and didn't give up. That ending was amazing!
A game of plotting against each other, and seeing who can countermand each other’s plans
Isn't this a bit like a caged bird and their loving owner?
Owner: Isabella
Cage: Grace Field
Bird: The children
ok buy fun fact: isabella also hums the lullaby when walking the kids to their death because she isnt allowed to cry.
this song literally gives me chills 😭😭✋
2:16 my heart dropped. oh my god. honestly this anime is so good and kinda underrated. i cried a lot for norman he was my favorite 🥺
I've been listening to her lullaby while reading the entire manga😂
I loved TPN’s opening song. Looked forward to it every episode.
_"Go on and be careful, I pray that you will find light."_
Wow this was great! You made me look at the show in a different way. Thx for that!
The llubay always give me chills this show is easily in my top 3 of all time :'(
I'm only a minute and 37 seconds in, and I'm already sure I'm gonna love this. Just from the perspective of a musical score geek.
This video was amazing, words can't describe it
Thank you for making this
This explanation was nailed! I love it so much, thank you for this video.
Amazing analysis! Keep it up :)
great video, great topic, keep up the good work
I realized that this lullaby was made for hope and survival so it might for us too to survive the reality, to not lose a battle, be full of hope, never give up and others postive things, these song teach us that, I am really glad for Leslie making this melody and isabella making it a lullaby because it is a now new hope to me which I once lost
This was beautiful and made the show even easier to love, thank you for your gorgeous video.
Here's something interesting I would like to share..:
I was.. never mad at Isabella. Not a bit. When she broke Emma's leg, well, kay, I was mad. But when she suggested to Emma about being a mom, the anger? Gone.
For some reason when she said that, my anger went away. Instead of a bad thing, I saw it as something else. Idk how to explain. When she shipped Norman off, I didn't get mad. Well, I was spoiled so I didn't shed a tear.
When she had her scary, threatening moments, that's all I could see. That she's an enemy. But not a bad person all the way through. I felt the same with the sister. (I forgot her name)
In fact, when that sister died, I cried. When she died, my WHOLE p.o.v, changed. It changed to: "It's all for survival."
Ofc, at that time, I was only referring to sister, Isabella haven't crossed my mind yet. When she called out to her son by saying, "I need to get at least his brain."
I was only amused because she isn't hiding it. But I wasn't mad. When she laughed like a maniac, all I thought was "she's gone nuts." I wasn't mad, nor was I scared either. Just neutral.
You know, I think I saw her humanity when she reunited with the kids Emma left behind cuz, y'know? But it quickly faded away when she went to chase them but it came back just as quickly when it showed the scene of her younger self jumping over the wall.
Before her past was revealed, I always had this feeling.
"I couldn't stay mad at her forever."
When they revealed her past, I finally knew why. All this time, I never thought that anything she did was fake. Those smile, the hugs, concern, everything. Somehow, I saw through the evil aura that enveloped her all the way to that hidden genuinity.
Norman's little story, played a big role. Back when he was sick and Emma kept visiting him, you know?
None of the moments of her there EVER felt fake. I saw her as if she's a true mother.
What do people call this again? A.. girl's intuition?
Maybe.
Anyone else go to listen to this beautiful song after how great of job this video did explaining why it's so good.
I could barely concentrate on what you were saying. Just hearing the lullaby in the background.... Chills. I'm obsessed with how this lullaby does exactly what it's not supposed to do: keep me awake.
you explained it so well that it has brought me to tears 😭
