I’ve been working on persuading my sons to spend more time outside and less on social media or in front of a screen in general. We recently found a grove of wild tangerines in the woods a few miles from home and a huge stand of bamboo near to it. We decided to harvest a few pieces of bamboo while eating tangerines and I found your video while looking for how to treat it. From one life long self taut tradesman who has a similar philosophy on sustainability and independence to another. I thank you for these videos.
Thanks. It’s hard to keep the kids of the devices. I have trouble myself. But experiences like the one you just shared might just be the trick. Thanks for reaching out. Take care of those boys of yours!
I just bought a piece of property on the big island and will be moving there soon. I planned on being off grid but you definitely confirmed my decision. Mahalo
@Veronica yep we made it over from Oahu Feb. Of 22. We landed Hilo side, ended up in Leilani few months then found a house way down in Naalehu. Been working on and coming along great. Just need get some work to finish it. Best decision ever.
I’m literally in the Same position you were! In California and everything 😂I’ve watched this video like 4 times it inspires me and I plan to move out there in 6 months and buy my land. and start my homestead! Thanks for the tips aloha! 🌺
Thanks Sean. I've got a friend in Nawale estates and I'm totally wanting to join you all in the off grid lifestyle! It's just my pressure relief of the moment from working from home, but Hawaii has always been my happy place, and I've long been drawn to the simple life. So thank you for your channel and your videos. They help me get a glimpse of what it's really like. Good for you for getting clear on your goals at such a young age and getting out of the 'rat race'.
@@HomesteadinHawaii well you didn't have Nawale estates in your neighborhoods video....but I'm hoping to visit as soon as your quarantine is lifted (and my lockdown in California is lifted, and my work lets up a bit!) and I'll be exploring these locations for myself. Mahalo for the reply!
Aloha bruddah. Love your videos! I'm moving over there this year I hope and plan to be a handyman/carpenter as I have done for 40 + years. Was wondering if you had insight to handyman trade over there? Mahalo, Paul.
Paul Rabena hi Paul, you got your first client here! I just finished the foundation for 720 square feet permitted house in Paoha.I need carpenter who works with my Budget!
Very informative we have a home in California mountain area tired of the winter season here and would like a homestead in Hawaii we were told you have to have one year as a resident in Hawaii to purchase property is this true
Aloha. Thanks for watching. Hawai'i is a state just like any other state. You do not have to wait a year. But I would suggest it. It's always best to spend sometime where you want to live before you buy. Every neighborhood, or street even, is different. Hawai'i has a tendency to send people back to where they came from. You are either welcomed with open arms or put through the test. I would like to also mention that while Hawai'i is a state, the people of Hawai'i do not agree with it. Their country was stolen from them in 1896 by American Business men. The Hawaiian people never wanted to be part of America and there is still some angst over that issue today. All that being said, Hawai'i is a beautiful place and I feel grateful that I get to live here. Especially during this time of lockdown.
I will disagree about the mortgage I think it depends on how big it is and how long it will take Some of us can't get on the ladder AT ALL without a mortgage Bought my small house last year, got another piece of land year before Going to fix up the house this year when we get the money and use the rent money we pay now to pay down the mortgage before the end of the decade (10 yrs rather than 30) We all need to do it how we best can :)
Nice channel. I’m a new subscriber. I retired at 40. I’m happy. I bought 80 acres in the Ozarks and started a UA-cam channel. I’d love for you to look at it.
Thanks Sean for you really helpful video. I went to big Island 3 years ago and now I'm looking to buy a land near Kalapana but for now I didn't find less then 26k$ for small land. Do you have any tips to find land with better price tag.
Buy with other people. Consider black sands subdivision or nanawale. Can get cheap lots in leilani but that is lava central. Hawaiian beaches has cheap.lots too. Seaview area has been pretty high priced lately. Real estate is nuts right now.
You give some of the most straightforward, simple and best advice out there.
Mahalo. Sometimes I surprise myself!
@@HomesteadinHawaii It's hard for us to recognize our own talents.
Thanks Shawn! My mind is a whirling dervish of possibilities!! Not going to get much sleep, but I'll have a lot of fun!!!
Just go off grid, wherever you are, and keep your day job. It's easier than most people think
You have inspired us sir and we made the move this year!
Hope it goes well for you!
25 years ago, when I started my journey, I was working at Cash n Carry in Pahoa. Now I have SSI.
That’s about when I got here too. I probably saw you a bunch in cash & carry back then when I still had hair 😂

Good luck. It can be a rocky road at first but the endgame is worth the initial hardships.
Will be going soon, very soon. Looking forward to starting a new chapter for me and my wife! Words of inspiration!!
Good luck on this new adventure of yours!

Anybody ever bother you when you first got there? How’s it like in that area? Or does everybody just keep to themselves mostly?
I've never had problems. There are thieves around but they hit easy targets

Woohoo I can’t wait to move tgere
A lot more pricey these days
If everyone live off the grid. This will be detrimental to businesses. I’m older now. Ready to get off the Matrix
Do it!
If only one can get the gooberment out of the way there is so much to capitalise on there. Homemade jellies, jams, chutney, tinctures, etc.....
If only. So many of us want more government when less would actually be better

Epic idea but can’t do it with kids ...illegal to live in a tent or car with kids lol
Is it. People do it all over the place here
