Sir ! What is the cost to grade, level ground ? Just $ 1500 ? For each acre of land ? Can you advice me an affordable company, who can level my lot on Big Island ?
you raise a lot of good points. I have been looking at the 3 acre uncleared lots in FFVE for the last 10 years. They were going for $14k then and are up to $27k now.. What are your thoughts? IS this worth the investment? My main goal is to get away from california, be off grid and raise chickens, rabbits, a couple goats, garden, and give back to the community. I am getting older, have back pain issues, and I am less set on the 'bigger is better' when it comes to selecting land.. I watched your video on 5 communities in puna.. I would like to hear your perspective of FFVE and other surrounding areas.. Things are getting bad in california.
@@heathersmith6305 its not easy making the move. Yhe first couple years will definitely make you question your choices. That said, if land's going to get cheaper it might get back down to $20k. Cashed in my 401K… took a huge hit, bought 1/4 acre in Puna. Built a 1000 sq ft house, on paved road and on electric grid average cost is $75 a month. 3000 gal water catchment never ran low, freshest greens sold in local farmers markets and fresh fish anytime. Might buy 6 acres with my brother in volcano. Fern forest. Two adjacent 3 acre spaghetti lots. $69k. Good place to homestead? It seems to be thick rainforest. Mostly flat tho. Or flat ish.
A lot of people are moving into that area. It's cooler, wet, and can grow some cooler season crops, but not much traditional tropical crops. Mostly flat with ohia tree forest.

You seem to know a lot. I’ve been looking into property in ocean view. The property is covered in lava rocks. You living there for so long now, is this property possible to farm on? Would I just have them come with the bulldozer and clear the lava rock? Or would they just put top soil over it?
Dozer to rip the lot then bring in many truck loads of soil and mulch or grow in containers. Integer issue there is rainfall. Higher elevations get more rain
Moving to KEAAU on Sept 15th. Purchased a tiny house. Completely off grid. Solar ect. I luckily didn't have to buy land just put it on my daughter's land.
I am looking for land and to go off grid. Where do I find low cost land to build my own off grid small home? And what is the cost of building materials in HI? I’m thinking concrete and concrete blocks, but if wood is available...
If you want low cost, Hawaii is no longer the place for that. Expect everything to cost a least double from the mainland. Time will price you out no matter how simple your lifestyle
Where do you surf less than 1hr away? What about lava tubes on your property? How was the vog during the last eruption and did you have to evacuate? Do you have insurance?
There are a few surf spots in Hilo that I am less than 20 minutes from. But they are getting crowded these days because of the spots we lost in the last eruption. Some properties do have lava tubes, mine doesn't. Most people are able to work around lava tubes, they aren't that common either. I live in Zone 3 for a reason. While zone 1 & 2 were both really beautiful areas, there had to be a reason they were zoned that way, and it showed in 2018. We did not have to evacuate, but the sky was an eerie orange color every night. We only had 2 bad vog days when the winds didn't blow but other than that, we were fine. You can get insurance in zone 3 no problem.
@@HomesteadinHawaii Thanks. Once while visiting the big island, I surfed a break near Kalapama which itself had been destroyed by volcanic activity. I lived on Oahu for about 9 years some time ago and thought about buying land on the big island. One thing I was told was to have the land surveyed and to check for volcanic tubes. Another thing I was told to check was to see if there were zoning plans that would tie the property to water and electricity. You don't think it's necessary? What do you think of shipping containers as an initial residence and how do houses fare when hurricanes blow by the big island in the summer? Also what was the vog like? I would most like to know your annual expenses to live in Puna such as taxes and the cost of living these days. Mahalo.
@@wm2552 many lots are able to connect to the power grid, with a hefty connection fee and then a high monthly power bill. I prefer to just be on solar. Water is harder to connect to. If you are on a main highway you might be able to connect to the county water, but for the most part its rainwater catchment.
@@wm2552 my taxes are around $500/year on .5acre. Vog was only an issue for 2 days during the eruption, never noticed it other than that. Tropical storm iselle dropped trees everywhere, but the mauna does a good job dispersing most of the harmful effects of hurricanes. During hurricane lane it flooded north of hilo but my spot the rain drained right through. Cost of living is what you make it. We live off $1500 a month for a family of 4. We pay no mortgage, water or electric bill. We do have a little propane for cooking. Rest of the money goes to food, gas and misc items.

Enjoyed hearing your story. Especially since you are from Calif. and manufactured surfboards, fellow surfer from Calif. Heard about those pesky Pigs.
If you have a fence, pigs are no problem, plus they taste good. It's been a long time since I surfed California, the waves have gotten PACKED with transplants post covid here in Hawaii, how's the surf on the mainland?
Awesome video brother..looking into taking a vacation this year to look at some property’s in the Ocean view,Mountain view and Pahoa area super excited I found your channel..time for some binge watching this weekend thank you for the great content 😎
Ha! Hope I don't waste too much of your time. Good luck!
@@HomesteadinHawaii Thank you..it’s inspiring me and with your local knowledge I’m definitely learning a lot and looking into things that I probably wouldn’t have..so definitely not a wast of time. In the beginning I will probably do a small Yurt or small cabin at or under 220 sq ft to help with permits.
I will also only be staying part of the year for the first few years..I’m thinking of finding a caretaker for the property or someone local to rent it cheep to help detour the theft issue..what do you think would be a good way to go in that type of situation.
Thanks again for all that you do ! 😎
I have been thinking of doing this move for some time now. I am glad to see you post your story and have a new subscriber.
Welcome aboard!
Thanks! just shot you an email@@HomesteadinHawaii
Who’s the grader you used?
Walker excavation
This is a great video also shows how much you can save by doing things yourself.
Thanks. If youʻre on a budget, you have to do it yourself, there is no other way
Brother, I love this video. I like how you laid it out, I like how you worked for it. I like how you are optimistic and say to make the dream happen! Any suggestion as to where I could look for land? Like a website, or do you know of some for sale? Is that area safe from the lava? What is the better direction (N,S,E,W) to be located? Also you think they will still turn a blind eye in 2022? Any other places in HI that are chiller like this? If a neighbor calls on you what might happen? Any info on that would be appreciated, thanks!
The dream is still alive. It just costs more. All those questions you asked would require a consult but my best advice, check out puna in person to see if you like it. It is not for everyone
@@HomesteadinHawaii Cool, I have a future trip to the area planned. I have a friend that has was living on the other side of the island and has been out that way. I would consider a consult sometime. Thanks for the reply. I work in Alaska on a farm in the summer. I also wonder if a vehicle would be safe unattended while I am away.
@@jonathankuhn2180 nothing is safe unattended out here. Either the jungle reclaims it or rippers will take it
@@marymalko5105 The Jungle I can deal with and understand. But rippers? Guessing that is a term for thieves? That's sad. Not very attractive to live somewhere that is getting eyeballed by thieves.
Excellent job. You are an inspiration to others. Thanks for the video.
Mahalo
Super helpful information! Mahalo bra!
Mahalo for watching
Might buy 6 acres with my brother in volcano. Fern forest. Two adjacent 3 acre spaghetti lots. $69k. Good place to homestead? It seems to be thick rainforest. Mostly flat tho. Or flat ish.
A lot of people are moving into that area. It's cooler, wet, and can grow some cooler season crops, but not much traditional tropical crops. Mostly flat with ohia tree forest.
We are coming and we are excited to start our own food forrest or take over one that has been started already. We shall trade veggies!
Awesome! It's a fun adventure.
you the man... i tried 2 times but i had a great job so i soldout
I've come and gone a few times myself.
Thanks man. Very practical ideas.
Mahalo for watching!
i’m looking to go into maybe Mountain View or volcano area and interested in what size of a solar system do you have to run the whole Homestead? I have a decent amount of money saved up, looking at maybe 2 to 3 acres
It really depends on what you plan on running. Some people can get away with 1, others need 40
Do you have a video on filtering drinking water?
I do, here it is:
3 Way To Make Rainwater Drinkable
ua-cam.com/video/3iWhhRxyRJk/v-deo.html
Sean. You mentioned your solar power setup, didn’t say what size panels or batteries.
I started with 4 220 watt panels and 4 golf cart batteries. Now I have 10 panels a 5 deep cycle solar batteries
Great tips! I was always wondering how much it would cost to start up
Moving to KEAAU on Sept 15th. Purchased a tiny house. Completely off grid. Solar ect. I luckily didn't have to buy land just put it on my daughter's land.
Good for you! The adventure awaits!
Maybe we can grow watermelon 🍉 together 😂
yes i want to learn homestead
I'm planning on getting an acre and building a permaculture food forest homestead. Once my truck is paid off I'm selling everything for the dream.
Good luck, prices are a lot higher these days
Great UA-cam channel! I'm New here . I love it !
You're talking about what you did 18 years ago and what it cost. What does it cost now for the same property and the same services?
Definitely needs a post Covid update
Thanks for sharing this.
No problem. Thanks for watching
Thanks.
So awesome, and inspiring. Keep sharing!
Mahalo
Great channel bro well done with your survival bro . Good on you.
Mahalo
3k - great investment! I am looking and it looks like 45k and up. I want to raise my daughters there. We lived there in 2015. It’s amazing. Looks like you have it set up.
Costs are crazy these days. I have to update this video! Good luck trying to make it happen.
That's an ideal way of life. You are living most mens dream life. Hawaii, surfing, food Forrest. Amazing, congrats
Could be worse! Mahalo for watching.
Would love to see inside your home. lots of great info here - love your simple and small advice.
I have mixed feelings about that. Kinda want to keep the house private.
Wow I haven’t even watched the whole thing but I’m already inspired i turn 23 years old this year and I want to move to Hawaii grow my own food and learn to surf so to hear that you did it at my same age confirmed for me that it is possible for someone even as young as me🥰❣️ I am excited to watch the rest of the video and hear what you have to say 🙌🏾
While I know anyone can do it, it’s not as easy today as it was 20 years ago. The same $3k lot is now $30k and building prices cost a lot more but it can be done if you’re resourceful and driven. BUT if I was doing it all over again now… I might go to another country that’s cheap and learn how to develop remote based income
@@HomesteadinHawaii thank you that’s definitely true
Dude I’m so inspired. I’m totally going off grid and overly excited. Yooooo!!!
Ha. Do it!
great video! i would love to chat with you sometime, as my wife and I are looking to build our homestead. Hope you score some good waves, and your place looks great btw:)

Mahalo for putting out good information and awesome video I plan to get land in hawaii within 2yrs I miss home already🤙
Hope you can make it happen! Market has gone nuts since covid
Thanks for this video, very helpful.
Quick question. How close is the nearest USPS?
5 miles from my place, could be 20+ miles for others
How about sewer? Do you use some super-organic household products and compost the waste? Do you know if septics are common there and how much is it to install one? Thank you so much for the video!
Septics are common and cost between $10k - $15k depending on inflation and all. I have a compost toilet and made a few videos on that.
Price depends on new or used panels and selfinstalled or solar company.
As with all things diy is cheaper
You should show us your homestead

Thank you so much for the information. We planning to move to some places with tropical whether, could you advice me which area in Hawaii is out for volcanoes. Thank you for your time
Just stay away from anything past Pahoa town itself and you should be fine.
I wanted to see your house!
Ha! One day perhaps.
Are there any decent surf breaks near you?
No, they're all under lava. All that's left is junk at best
Great Video! I'm starting the process of homesteading in HOVE on my acre. Thanks for the inspiration.
Good luck!
You are very lucky to have a piece of land in Hawaii that is something I've always wanted to do I don't know if you can help me figure out how to purchase a small piece of land I kind of like the North shore in Oahu but I know it's very expensive
I like the north shore too but do you have a million dollars, if so let’s talk
Ahaha I moving to island from city lady from Brazil to Hawaii homestead , thanks for your videos it’s great help for someone like me.. we will be neighbours I love to meet you. Good vibes 😎
Good luck on the move!
dude...you're an inspiration.
Mahalo! I appreciate that.
Awesome Job and great vision!
Thanks
Your story is inspiring, thank you :)

Awesome!!! I want to live off grid in Hawaii 🤙
It has itʻs pros and cons, I need to update this video
My husband and I are looking in to buy a piece of property in Puna this year! So glad I’ve found you! We live in North Shore of Oahu now. Do you have Septic system? Or do you use composed toilet???
We use a compost toilet. You can check it out in another video I made. An NSF certified compost toilet is legal in puna.
Homesteadin' Hawai'i I watched the video right after I made this comment. :) May I email you for further question regarding off grid life?
For sure. Swjennings@gmail.com
Where would you recommend to buy land that’s cheap and not in lava zone? If that exists?
Cheap, doesn’t really exist, best spot hpp, then maybe fern forest but it’s rainy up there
On the off grid homesteads can you have a milk cow?
If you can feed it you can have it
Just found your channel man. You are a legend 💪🌴 respect.
Mahaloz
Heading to Mountain View/volcano area to look at property in the next few weeks
Good luck on your search!
be very careful of lava zones on the Island, it's cheap for a reason. One lava flow could wipe out your house and land.
Great video dude!
Mahalo!
Hi,
I’m planning to start homesteading in Hilo. I love what you did and want to live off grid using a water catchment m, Solar and a composting toilet. I’m totally new to this but it’s my dream. Would you be willing to be our mentor & give me tips or advice?
I’m totally new to this but am desperate due to my situation.
I’m looking for a place now and am interested in 2 lots but am still looking. I live on Oahu right now but as soon as I am ready, I plan to fly over to check out the lots and would love to meet you and check out your set up. If this is possible, please let me know. Thank you.
Sounds like you already have a lab in place, but I do offer consultations. Feel free to check them out on my website www.homesteadinHawaii.com
@@HomesteadinHawaii thank you so much. 😃
Mahalo! How much was your Water Pump? What kind of filtering system do you recommend? Water Heating?
