- How much does it cost to go off grid in Hawaii. I break it all down for you in this video. You can get started with very little, in Hawaii or any community that you find yourself in.
But sometimes to get started you need a little information. In this video I go over the various cost of going off grid, from purchasing the land, to clearing, to building and more.
If a 23 year old kid could make the move to go Off Grid, I know that you can too!

Every little bit helps. Mahalo
Sir ! What is the cost to grade, level ground ? Just $ 1500 ? For each acre of land ? Can you advice me an affordable company, who can level my lot on Big Island ?
you raise a lot of good points. I have been looking at the 3 acre uncleared lots in FFVE for the last 10 years. They were going for $14k then and are up to $27k now.. What are your thoughts? IS this worth the investment? My main goal is to get away from california, be off grid and raise chickens, rabbits, a couple goats, garden, and give back to the community. I am getting older, have back pain issues, and I am less set on the 'bigger is better' when it comes to selecting land.. I watched your video on 5 communities in puna.. I would like to hear your perspective of FFVE and other surrounding areas.. Things are getting bad in california.
@@heathersmith6305 its not easy making the move. Yhe first couple years will definitely make you question your choices. That said, if land's going to get cheaper it might get back down to $20k. We have tons of booms and busts on big island. This looks like another.
Fern forest is rainy, colder, had no soil and can have some bad neighbors. But some streets are great. You will just have to bring in a lot of material to make it farmable.
Your closing lines sum it up for me. Living free. Done with the rat race here. The kid is off in the Navy now and it is just me and the dog. I was leaning to going back to Texas, but the big island is looking pretty nice from what I have been seeing. Yeah, I know it is a bit more country than the rest of Hawaii, but I prefer that. Just subscribed. Keep up this good work!
Mahalo for watching!
Hawaii is a great place but not without its challenges. Whatever you decide I am sure it will be great!
Me too! It's just me. I want to go!
You’re awesome for this video, very inspiring with your simplicity. I’m so ready to go off grid here in Hawaii. You have a new subscriber
Mahalo! The recent Hawaii shutdown puts this lifestyle higher on the list of importance. It's time to for the people of Hawai'i to go back to the roots.
It’s sad that God gave us free rain, sun, land and food. Now man wants money for air, and everything else they can think up. We need to go back to skills and bartering
God also gave us money ;)
I agree, free land & food !
God's way is best.. For He causes His sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous.

Awesome video my man. One of the best I have seen on this topic, quick, to the point with a cool story. Subbed.
Mahalo Brother.
Thank you for your honest and heartfelt stories. You are a great guy, thanks for sharing.
Thanks for saying that
Lovin it man, thanks for the honest info
Thanks for watching
I remember my friend that lives there talking alot
about the cinder infill to level spots and growing in containers,
your video is inspirering ,
I just realized you have to compost and make your own dirt!
Thanks. It's all rock here so it's a little more challenging. But perennials grow well.
your channel is exactly what we were looking for. My partner and I have got the cheap living over here on the mainland down. we're ready and gearing up for the move to Hawaii to put what we've learned over the past 5 years into action. Homestead Hawaii here we come. Thanks brother Aloha
Mahalo. Good luck on your move!
Thanks for the video. The costs listed gives a good estimate of some costs. I recently bought a piece of land on the Big Island in Oceanview.
E Komo Mai! Good luck in OV. I hear its rocky, just like us.
WE are planning on building an off grid community in Hawaii with tiny houses and after watching your story we think this might be doable. Very insprirational. Wow. Thankyou for sharing.
An off gird community of tiny houses is different than one house, but...(it has been done).
Just ran across your video today and was really impressed with how you've achieved your dream. Congratulations, and best to you....

I hit the jackpot! you are my indpiration! Going off grid in Hawaii is my dream! And I was thinking of east Oahu myself!
Thanks for saying so. I don't know Oahu too well, but if you are in the rural parts of east oahu you should be fine, otherwise expect some hurdles to jump through.
Awesome video very informative my father built a container home in kapaau hi years ago I can’t wait to finally go there and possibly stay because it’s my dream as well and thank you so much for sharing your experience and proving the fact that dreams can come true.
Its possible but it takes more grit these days
Great Video! I'm starting the process of homesteading in HOVE on my acre. Thanks for the inspiration.
Good luck!
Good information my braddah! Really appreciate it.

Itʻs a little dated now but Iʻm glad it could help
I wanna go home! I’m originally from Oahu, this is very good info! Anything is possible when you live your truth. Very inspiring! Ty!!
I hope you can make it happen. This video was precovid, a lot has changed since then. The market on oahu is nuts!

Thanks Shawn! My reasons for moving off grid are food safety and travel so this video has given me so many great ideas! Cheers!
Just be warned, prices are very different from what I mentioned in the video. You can pretty much double any price I mentioned post covid
Awesome video brother..looking into taking a vacation this year to look at some property’s in the Ocean view,Mountain view and Pahoa area super excited I found your channel..time for some binge watching this weekend thank you for the great content 😎
Ha! Hope I don't waste too much of your time. Good luck!
@@HomesteadinHawaii Thank you..it’s inspiring me and with your local knowledge I’m definitely learning a lot and looking into things that I probably wouldn’t have..so definitely not a wast of time. In the beginning I will probably do a small Yurt or small cabin at or under 220 sq ft to help with permits.
I will also only be staying part of the year for the first few years..I’m thinking of finding a caretaker for the property or someone local to rent it cheep to help detour the theft issue..what do you think would be a good way to go in that type of situation.
Thanks again for all that you do ! 😎
Thanks man. Very practical ideas.

Very cool video. Super insightful. I’m definitely dreaming of owning a homestead some day on a tropical island. Thanks for sharing!

Awesome Job and great vision!
Thanks
dude...you're an inspiration.
Mahalo! I appreciate that.
Aloha! I'm tryina be your neighbor. I love your story because it sounds like what I'm preparing to do myself. Just get a small piece of land and then gradually build. Coming from the mainland, and not having friends or family who can identify with my vision and my dreams to be more self sufficient in Hawaii it's really helpful to hear success stories such as yours. I'm so happy for you that 18 years in it's all working out so well. Mahalo for all the info and advice.
It definitely was a struggle at first. I was pretty lonely and felt so isolated in the middle of the ocean. But I loved surfing and began building up a network through people I met at the beach. It is an attainable dream, I hope you reach yours.
Have you made any headway? Best of luck!
@@jonathankuhn2180 You could say that! I have been living in town for the past 2+ years and I have a good job. I haven't been able to get a piece of land yet, but just remaining here on the island for this long has been an accomplishment in and of itself, and even without my own homestead I feel lucky for every day that I get to be here!
@@Malini108 Cool, glad to hear! I live in colorado and feel the same way! We might have to be friends, I am feeling the island life coming my way soon. Where are you living or renting? What is the cost for a small room? Are there any places near by where I could be employeed in massage or yoga? What about working on a fruit or nut farm? How is the seafood? Is it affordable, is the fishing good? Thanks!
Thank for all the great info !!

Great video dude!
Mahalo!
Wow I haven’t even watched the whole thing but I’m already inspired i turn 23 years old this year and I want to move to Hawaii grow my own food and learn to surf so to hear that you did it at my same age confirmed for me that it is possible for someone even as young as me🥰❣️ I am excited to watch the rest of the video and hear what you have to say 🙌🏾
While I know anyone can do it, it’s not as easy today as it was 20 years ago. The same $3k lot is now $30k and building prices cost a lot more but it can be done if you’re resourceful and driven. BUT if I was doing it all over again now… I might go to another country that’s cheap and learn how to develop remote based income
@@HomesteadinHawaii thank you that’s definitely true

great video ty 2020
I have watched a ton of off grid videos and had become discouraged. But after watching 2 of your videos I feel encouraged. 1 Acre of land is all I need. Are property taxes high in Hawaii? Access to groceries until/instead of a garden? Medical facilities? Roads are like what?
It all depends on where you are.
Love the break down man mahalo
Thanks for watching
Video idea. It would be nice if you would show us around your property so we could see all the food bearing plants you have planted and how quickly the plants have grown. Are you fully self sufficient with food production etc?

Brother, I love this video. I like how you laid it out, I like how you worked for it. I like how you are optimistic and say to make the dream happen! Any suggestion as to where I could look for land? Like a website, or do you know of some for sale? Is that area safe from the lava? What is the better direction (N,S,E,W) to be located? Also you think they will still turn a blind eye in 2022? Any other places in HI that are chiller like this? If a neighbor calls on you what might happen? Any info on that would be appreciated, thanks!
The dream is still alive. It just costs more. All those questions you asked would require a consult but my best advice, check out puna in person to see if you like it. It is not for everyone
@@HomesteadinHawaii Cool, I have a future trip to the area planned. I have a friend that has was living on the other side of the island and has been out that way. I would consider a consult sometime. Thanks for the reply. I work in Alaska on a farm in the summer. I also wonder if a vehicle would be safe unattended while I am away.
@@jonathankuhn2180 nothing is safe unattended out here. Either the jungle reclaims it or rippers will take it

What are you doing for a septic tank? How are collecting your waste and separating gray water
You must watch more of my videos :). I have a compost toilet and my greywater goes out into the landscape. You can get away with it legally here, you have to prove you can't access traditional sewer treatment and have a permitted toilet.
dude this is awesome!! your website says you raise chickens, i would definitely watch a video about them!! and im always down for eggs.
also whats the beer situation like on the big island?
Local breweries are lacking. Kona brewing just got outed for brewing beer on the mainland. But we have a few others that are good.
My chickens just run wild. I should make a video on how we harvest and hunt
Hello! Lobe your channel! I’m coming out first week of April to visit a friend who is starting his homestead and if all goes well I’ll be purchasing my own place in or around Puna this year! I’ll definitely be reaching out for any questions. One question I do have is I have a 9 year old son. Are there schools nearby or does everyone home school?
There are a few private schools, some charters, lots of homeschooling
Basic living for the basic mind.💯
That's all you really need
You didn’t mention if you had a refrigerator on your solar system! I would imagine that you do, but was wondering if it was a small or large fridge, and if it was a 12-volt type of fridge? Thanks for sharing! We own some lots in Puna, too, but haven’t broke ground on any of them yet, as the wife wants to keep working on Kona side, for now! So, we are renting on this side! Take care!
We do have a fridge. Started of with a solar fridge from sundanzer and now have a more conventional upright fridge we got at home depot, just needed to ad 2 more solar panels.
May I ask what part of Hawaii are you in and where did you search for land? I’ve been looking online but it just seems like such a broad search.
I started by looking on www.alohaliving.com/ or now a days zillow and entered my budget. That instantly narrowed me down to the big island in Puna. From there I found property that was in my price range and double checked it against google maps and lava zones. Then I just looked around and checked each one out. It is key to be on the ground, do not buy sight unseen. Once you are here, you may decide that you like the area north of hill, or kona, or maybe you like a certain subdivision over another? It'll take some work.
Good Luck.
Thank you for sharing this! How's living in Puna? I've heard good and bad. Are there any neighborhoods to steer clear of?
Every Neighborhood has its street. If you find a good road with solid neighbors, its easy to get the vibe just by driving down the road, you should do just fine. There is theft and poverty, but there is also aloha. It just depends on what lense you are looking through.
So cool I found your video! I am planning on doing that right now, and am talking to a realtor about buying in Eden Roc. I would like to live lower down, but am finding it hard to find a place that's a half acre that has no CCWs and will let me use a shipping container.
You can get away with a lot in Puna. The hardest subdivision to have gotten away with bending the rules was leilani, now half of its under lava. I know of people in Orchidland and HPP who have built out of shipping containers. One thing about Puna, they are laxed about enforcing building code. But there is always a risk from a nosey neighbor.
Let me know if you need any more tips. I was thinking about doing a video tour of the different subdivisions for folks.
I live in Ainaloa and there is a shipping container home on the next block over.
@@HomesteadinHawaii Really? Wow that is totally cool. I would hate to buy there though, then have someone complain about me.
@@HomesteadinHawaii Leilani, would be nice, but it is a little expensive for me, and the risk too high that it might happen again and I would loose everything. An acre of lava covered property is going around $14,000 which is too much to pay for rock. I see lots in Eden Roc for around $8,000 an acre, but wonder about the higher elevation for growing.
@@3000gtwelder Personally I am not a fan of Eden Roc. It just feels so far from everything up there. I would stay away from Leilani too. Trust me when I say this, people build some really crappy shacks out here. A shipping container home done right would not get bothered as long as you're not filling the place up with dogs, roosters or throwing drug filled raves.
Hey brother absolutely love your videos been watching for about a year now. So property I'm hearing what your saying but others keep telling me there's alot of red tape and so on. That you can't just buy property and camp on it while you build, what's your take?
It is illegal to camp on your property. Hawaii has the same rules as anywhere else. But for some reason here in puna, you see a lot of people camping on their properties while they build without issue.
Achieve your dream… I love it!
wow great job!
Mahalo! Somehow it all worked out.
