Nick: As a physician, this may interest you. Last year I had a difficult surgery, whose post-surgical complications kept me bedridden for four months. Last Christmas was about six weeks into this, at which time I decided to online order an R41 as a selfie gift. I had thought about getting one for some time, but I was mainly interested to see whether I had maintained/recovered enough upper body control to get my laptop connected to the institutional wi-fi, and get to a webpage where I could tap out a razor order. (It was an effort, but eventually successful, & I got a pack of Feathers along with the R41.) Eventually, I recovered more, and decided to get rid of a several months long beard. By that time, I had severe bed head, and the beard was equally wild. I looked like Santa Claus after sticking a finger in an electrical socket. So my first use of the R41 was to take this beard off with a Feather, and happily it was smooth and easy, really a one pass WTG shave, just like shearing a sheep. The R41's a nice razor, and I can't really understand its fearsome reputation. Best wishes for the holidays to you and yours.

For anyone on the fence about buying this razor - don't let people scare you off from getting it. As long as you hold the razor at the correct angle with the handle more toward your face you'll be fine. People act like this thing will cut your head off. Whatever. Go slow and you'll be fine.

I’ve owned the mühle R89 for much longer than I’ve owned the R41(I own multiple razors as well). That being said ever since I got the R41(I believe two’ish years ago) at least once a month (depending on growth), I will do my first pass with the R41and my next two with my R89. I’m not sure where I picked up on that, probably one of you UA-cam shavers, but it is awesome for taking my beard down!
Thanks again for all of the videos

Looks like you had a great shave there Nick. Took my NSV goatee off on December 1st as well. My slim adjustable on 9 mowed through it but boy was that area ever sensitive as well. No other place on my face had burn with the AS but my goatee area burned bad enough I dropped an F bomb. so I hear ya on that. With that said you can get back to feeling good and clean shaven now lol

Sorry you ended up cutting yourself a couple times. One thing I kind of like about it though is it shows that even when you get really good at shaving you can still get cuts every once in awhile so don’t get stressed if it does happen. As always keep up the good work!

It's ok if you have nicks and cuts. After all, it's just sometimes you get one once in a while. About alcohol-based aftershaves, would you admit that they're bad for your own skin type since your skin is sensitive? Balms are more better than splashes since alcohol does more harm to the skin than good

I recently stopped shaving against the grain because I found the irritation wasn't worth it. I'm finding that the more aggressive razors shave me closer (because I don't want to spend several minutes performing a clean up pass on a milder razor). My Fatip Grande leaves a light shadow stubble, but the Ikon Tech gets rid of it (and gives me a shave almost as close as if I shaved against the grain).

Hey Nick shaves use symmetry open comb over r41 as if you have a beard and use r41, r41 feels harsh if you over do a particular portion. It becomes red. Symmetry open comb doesn't feel harsh. Traditional open combs are better than r41 specially for beard or stuble. If I have stubble More than a week I don't use r41 and prefer symmetry open comb. It is more effective.

Jeffrey Ramsower I totally agree. I know Voskhods have a fanatical following, but I've never gotten the shave out of them that I've gotten from Astra SPs or Gillette Silver Blues. Even the Dorco Prime Platinum works much better for my beard. I didn't care for the Voskhods at all, which was really disappointing. I'm just glad I only bought a 10-pack and not 100 of them.

I can't shave with Voshkod either. ... of course in wet shaving everything is subjective. ..

I’m a die hard feather user. By far my favourite, love how sharp they are makes the shave feel really smooth

For me, a Voskhod and a 34C makes for a perfect shave...

Dave M is it sharper than a feather? I’ve never tried it but I heard they are cheaper

I LOVE to shave, but I HATE how I look without a beard. I haven't shaved in two years... so much good gear just dying in my bathroom cabinet.

Should have gone slower with the first pass ..... buffing would have been a better strategy ..... ur earlier r41 shave with full beard was perfect

Makes me feel better when even Nick gets a little bloody from time to time.

Dude, it doesn't make sense. Try to test the shavers with 24h growth bear.

Wouldnt it be much easier to use an electric beard trimmer, and get it down to stubble first, then shave?

you don't need to with safety razors

That's what I do. I'll usually knock it down with an Andis Outliner the night before and then it's really comfortable when I shave the following morning. Like the other commenter said, you don't *have* to do this, but I've found that when I shave (even with a more aggressive razor) after more than two days, there's just more pulling, I have to go slower, and I couldn't pull off a single WTG shave.
