  • Wind Back Tool amzn.to/3SW7Iem
Today we have a Corsa VXR in the workshop with complaints from the customer for brake noise.
In this case, Marc found that the OSR (Drivers/right rear) Brake caliper was stuck on causing the brakes to stay on and wear prematurely.
The inner pad had worn to the point of metal to metal contact which was creating the brake noise.
You can see by the red colouration of the disc that it had started to discolour due to overheating. When trying to wind back the piston on the rear caliper we can feel how solid the piston is as part of our diagnosis. Alot of people these days use powered tools to wind or push back pistons, i always like to do it by hand as you can feel more for its general condition (in my opinion).
always de adjust the handbrake cables from inside the car before trying to dis assemble the park brake from the caliper as you don't want to risk damaging the cable and you want as much slack as possible for later on when you come to re fit.
leave the fitment of the cable until last, once the caliper is in place as normal, bleed the hydraulic system and pump the pedal to re position the caliper piston. once that is done you can lever back the caliper park brake arm to fit the cable. moving this arm is what engages the park brake, if you move it to fit the cable before the hydraulic side of things is correct it can cause you problems later on.
when you are happy, double check for leaks and ensure everything is tight.
Re fit the wheels and torque to the correct spec.
Always give the car a thorough road test and again check for leaks in the brake system. it doesnt hurt to make sure everything is 100% and you can have piece of mind.

Seems to be a common problem, for some reason. Mine is binding now, just randomly out of the blue.

I wish you was more South Wales, otherwise I would be in with my E Corsa VXR with (maybe) the same issues but not 100% lol

Why do you need to push calipers onto the pads then do the handbrake, piston has got to only go one way thats forward... or does that effect the handbrake? As in if u wind the caliper fully back, then fit caliper over pads back to car, then turn the 13mm nut to connect the handbrake cable this pushes the piston out slightly, why is that bad as its gotta move forward anyway.

If im just replacing discs and pads, can i just leave the handbrake cable untouched? Many thanks

Hi. Correct me if i'm wrong. As i understand parking brakes and "pedal brakes" share same discs to stop wheels from spinning

There are other set ups, but in this, yes it's the same pad and disc that gets applied pressure. It is the means to apply that pressure which is different.
Foot pedal is through hydraulic pressure and the handbrake lever pulls a cable driven mechanism to hold pressure on the brakes.

@@MTMMotorServices Ty for reply. Meriva 1.7 dti 2003 has a similar system and I can't figure out how to increase the parking brake's tension and if it's even possible "without touching" parking brake cable because stretching cable not possible.

Brilliant video but mine have been a night, cant crack the brake line its got aftermarket braided hoses , is it safe to heat the nut

If you heat it, you risk boiling the brake fluid. This will make it less effective.
So make sure you change the brake fluid, that way you know its good.

Did your brake hose tighten down flush ?

Hi, why not restore the calipers by replacing the pistons and all seals instead of replacing the complete calipers?

I think its costs, the kit is as much as buying a brand new calliper, as I am at that stage and not sure if I need to refurb or brand new

@@welshwhoopee Understood. Makes sense. I also replaced mine on my 1.7CDTI. One was seized, the other was fine, replaced both with ones made in Poland which are made of AL.
