Even after trying a lot of bourbons in the past few years the, basic Buffalo Trace is one I keep coming back to. $25 here in Colorado, for an average 8 year bourbon - It’s hard to not keep a bottle on the shelf. You could say the same for Wild Turkey 101 - and even less expensive, but only a value if you like WT’s flavor profile.
Totally agree with this review, Peter. BT is a really good, but not great, bourbon. That being said, we always have it in stock. A go-to if I don't know what I fell like sipping.
I love a lot of spice and I guess that comes from my love of a good high punching rye although my whisky of choice are single salt scotch expressions - the elegant expressions and the rougher edge scotch expressions!! BT is too sweet for me but I know it's really popular and for many it's a great starter whisky. Elijah Craig Barrel Proof is a go to bourbon for me and I love Wild Turkey Rare Breed as a go to after a long day! Sometimes I use BT in cocktails but I do prefer a higher ABV bourbon and I like some spice! I loved your recent video with your sister! That was a fabulous cocktail - a huge favourite!! Great video Peter! Cheers! 🙂
I need to get my sister back on the channel. She really likes being on. We just need to coordinate our schedule. I'm starting to realize I prefer less spice in my whiskey. Some spice is good, but not a lot.
@@whiskeyisajourney That's so cool that your sister enjoys being on the show! That's awesome! How terrific for a brother and sister to share this adventure! Love that! I hear you with the spice. I have times where it's too much. Mood is a big thing for me and a dram of scotch or bourbon/rye. Terrific video as always Peter! Thanks for the lovely reply! Cheers!
The one other bottle that meets all the criteria you outlined for a starter bourbon (that I prefer over Buffalo Trace) is the standard Woodford Reserve. They are almost identical with regards to mash bill, ABV and price, yet the WR does not have that overwhelming corn sweetness. 🥃 BTW, I heard through GWhiskey that Powers is coming out with a cask strength version of their John's Lane 12 year Single Pot Still. Look out Redbreast 12 CS..!!!
The Powers sounds interesting! I got a Redbreast cask strength for Father’s Day a few years ago. It’s good, but honestly not super impressed. Maybe I’ll try the Powers…
This is a $30 bottle around here (Michigan), and considering where prices have gone, I think Buffalo Trace is a great value for the money. While I prefer Eagle Rare, I always keep a bottle of Buffalo Trace around too.
Buffalo Trace hard to find, was looking for it everywhere, one day it was at Walmart of all places. Bought it, love it, one of my favorites, wish I would have bought a 2nd bottle. Love WT101, but Buffalo Trace to me is better.
I like BT as a good warm-up pour. I have a couple of back-ups of it, though, so I only buy it now if I see a terrific price. Did you see that BT is putting out 5 more bottles we won't be able to find? Their Prohibition Collection. They could solve a lot of the allocated angst for consumers if they weren't producing 1000 different bottles.
This one is hard to find here and when it does show up, its gone in hours. I've gotten a couple bottle when out of town and my second bottle is pretty full. It is a nice to own bottle but not one I ever go back for at the end of the day. I mostly use it for blinds.
I use it to test my palate just to make sure my senses are working. I don't think I have ever not seen it in my area. Crazy how distribution works from state to state.
$28 in the Detroit area. You have to hunt around a bit at times and the smaller stores tend to do the mark up. I almost always have a bottle in the house.
I go back to see the ones I missed before I started watching you. This review is 10 months old but I'm interested in your take on Buffalo Trace which I like. On one of your recent videos I commented that I like your reviews when you do them solo. I have seen some comments come to your sister's defense - so everybody has their opinion. In mine, I say you alone have the best reviews. This 10 month old review only confirms it to me. I do look for your reviews but have yet to subscribe only because it is a hit and miss on if you are doing this solo or as a 2-person video. Thanks.
Found it today at my local SPEC's and bought several of the 1.75 L size for under $40, and that price works out to just about $17 for 750 ml. Hard to beat! Texans, get it while it is plentiful.
Peter, have you ever had a headache within an hour or two after drinking some of your whisky? I was a social bourbon consumer before I started having headaches after one or two drinks. I’m not referring to the morning headaches one sometimes gets after consuming alcohol. I noticed it more with the less expensive liquor. I explained my experiences with a liquor store owner who asked if I ever tried scotch whisky, which I had not. He recommended I try Macallan 12 yr sherry single cask scotch and the headaches stopped. This was how I was introduced to scotch 25 years ago. Macallan has changed over the years and I stopped buying it. Just curious if you had any experiences with headaches? Rob
It could be but I think it has more to do with the malting of the barley. Single grain whisky seems to effect me in a negative way. Some Rye whisky I have tried doesn't affect me as badly. I have a cask strength single grain 26 yr scotch that gives me a headache. I thought it was allergies but maybe not. @@whiskeyisajourney
Same. I also had Blantons and it reminded me of this with a little more flavor and ethanol. I'd rather sip on something else considering how hard it is to find in Texas
Given the choice I would reach for Eagle Rare over Buffalo Trace. $50.00 sounds a little high, but I'd probably buy a bottle at that price If I've never had it and it's hard to find in your area.
Great video, Peter! Tough to beat a classic like Buffalo Trace. While you pick this over others like Evan Williams BiB, are there any other $30ish and under bottles that you would actually pick over Buffalo Trace? Cheers!
That's a great question. Bottles that I have that are in that 30ish price range would be Redwood Empire Pipe Dream, maybe the Benchmark Top Floor or Full Proof, Eagle Rare, and Four Roses Single Barrel. Those come to mind.
For me BT is sweet without being too sweet and it gives me a good idea if my palate is working before I start my reviews, but I don't find myself go to this as a daily drinker.
I use Buffalo Trace as a primer bourbon before moving on to higher proofs. I have many bottles bunkered for that purpose. 🥃
Good solid bottle to have a backup of. Cheers!

Great short review, Peter. I do enjoy your videos.

I prefer ER over BT as well, but Eagle Rare is much much harder to get.
And more expensive when you do find it!@@whiskeyisajourney

Both good bottles, but like you I prefer Buffalo Trace. It's sweeter with just a touch of spice me
I really like your transitions from sipping to speaking behind the scene! BT 90 proof $30 USD for 1 liter in Taiwan....
Please tell me you bought a few bottles at that price. Cheers!
I agree the EW bottled in bond is not a great sipper but it is cheap and makes a great mixer.
It's just going to be a mixer for me going forward. Cheers!
Buffalo Trace is a great sip. I'm more of a Scotch person but this is one of my favorite Bourbons.
It's the bottle I go to to check my palate before I shoot my videos to make sure I'm tasting correctly. It's a good bottle.

I heard that. Just one more thing to be frustrated with. 😞
Definitely a sip. I will always try to have a bottle of BT on hand.
Same here. Cheers!
I actually bought my BT today. Decent price.
I’m going to save it for an occasion. Either, the day I get published or the day I have my first kid.
What do you do that you might get published? Doctoral thesis or something else?
@ I’m trying to write a novella. Nothing fancy.

Good to know. Not every bottle can be a sip for everyone. Cheers!
$28 in the Detroit area. You have to hunt around a bit at times and the smaller stores tend to do the mark up. I almost always have a bottle in the house.
It's a good one to always have a bottle of.
Where I live I saw it today, maybe 15 to 20 cases in the aisle, by the case it is about $22 per bottle. About $23-$24 per single bottle.
I think that's a fair price.

I saw the same thing here at a local AJ Fine Foods. Good deal!
For most of us this is what bourbon tastes like, it's the definitive. Others may be better or worse but, like Bulleit Rye, this is the standard.
Classic flavor. I agree . Cheers!

Fortunately I don't get headaches. That sounds miserable. Good to know you found an alternative. I wonder what caused it. Corn vs Barley?

Fair enough. Is it available in your area or is it allocated?

I can't find it in my area, I just found a bottle of Eagle Rare. $49.99

Evan Williams 1783 or BT?
I have never had EW 1783.
I’d go with 1783 myself. Side by side the EW 1783 makes BT taste very watery and bland. But Seriously, JTS Brown blows away all the bottom shelfers.
The other day I saw this marked up to $60 🤯
Run away! That's way too much.
I'm going to watch this thoughI do not like BT. I've tried. Everyone loves it for what it is ... except for me. I wanna know why I'm broken.
.... continued .... this is, ironically, pretty easy to find in Ottawa, 🇨🇦. I call Basil Hayden a starter bourbon. Old Forester is my daily bourbon.
For me BT is sweet without being too sweet and it gives me a good idea if my palate is working before I start my reviews, but I don't find myself go to this as a daily drinker.
I know they all or most supposed to be harsh this for my taste tastes very cheap and is very harsh.
Good to know. Thanks for sharing.
Fir me its a skip.
Sounds good. Too low proof, too bland, too hard to find?
