Buffalo Trace is my go to whiskey. For the price and the fact you can get it in any supermarket along with it being pretty flipping tasty, you can’t complain.
I find that at MSRP it is an excellent bourbon, but when they are charging $45+ it isn't competing with similarly priced bourbons. I'm no expert, but when you place it next to a nice 10 yr bourbon you can tell it's not worth that. Don't buy BT at Eagle Rare prices
In PA it's a nightmare to get since it is state regulated. So many people come asking for buffalo and blantons when we only get like 5 cases every 4 to 6 weeks. It's great for the price being hard to compete with. However, if people around here actually tried different things they would find something they could enjoy on a regular basis. Woodford reserve for example is only 10 bucks more here, and personally I enjoy the flavor more. That being said I love buffalo trace and it's a shame it is so heavily allocated here in Pennsylvania.
A fair review and comparison. I really like BT and have always found the Rye note to make itself known in just the right amount, which is a nice option from something really smooth like Makers. Every whiskey collection needs a "daily drinker" which is best categorized as an economically smart bottle, and BT fits that role. And I can CONFIRM that BT is hard to find in the US right now, along with several of their other labels.
Cheers bud! I need to crack my bottle of Maker’s open to compare it, I considered Maker’s my favourite entry level for a long time but it’s been so long since I’ve actually had a bottle I can’t tell you if that’s really still the case. I’m all for some cheaper options in a collection - it’s nice to enjoy something and know you can replace it super easily and at little cost.
Hard to find in the US is crazy, its a regular special offer in supermarkets here, we can always get it at £19 a bottle, we can always get Jim Beam white and JD cheap as well, the big supermarkets rotate their offers.
My go to neat Bourbon pours would be Wild Turkey 101, Buffalo Trace, Elijah Craig, Four Roses Small Batch, and 1792 Small Batch because they are very good values, especially when you can get them under 25 dollars. Bulleit is overpriced at closer to 40 dollars and Woodford Reserve is often closer to 50 dollars, so, I don't recommend those as regular sippers. Every bourbon has a distinct flavor profile, and as long as you don't find something in a bottle that offends you, you can probably find a way to use the contents in a way that maximizes your enjoyment of the bottle.
@@Deezfuggin That’s interesting. It’s so easily available in the UK. It is available in abundance at every supermarket chain. I wonder why it is so limited in the US.
@@andywylde It’s mostly artificial scarcity They limit supply on purpose to increase hype, if a bourbon is sold out everyone will become more desperate for it which increase word of mouth and then sales. That combined with their other marketing efforts, like blantons being drank in John wick and the Buffalo trace soap. Just a whole lot of branding and marketing to increase hype, people here pay 2x msrp or drive hours to get it. Their distillery in general has everything allocated here, Buffalo trace, Blantons, eh Taylor, stagg, old weller, van winkle, all of these have extreme hype here and you should get them if you can for a reasonable price.
@@andywylde Mostly great marketing tbh but Buffalo trace is a great bourbon for the price. It used to be widely available here but I think they limited supply and switch to allocation to increase hype. Allocation also works like a reward system, liquor stores that sell more of the other products from the distillery get rewarded with allocated bottles, which increases their business and popularity.
We get it from $23 to $28 for a 750 ml. here in the New Orleans area. It's readily available. I can get it at my local Walmart and the corner gas station.
In Germany you can get the 40% (in a 0,7 l bottle) and the 45% (in a 1 l bottle) and the 45% one is the hyped one from the US, which is a really great pour. Bought my last bottle for only 22 euros, which is an unbelievable good price.
This seems to be common everywhere outside of the US except the UK! The litre bottles here are also the 45%, but they are incredibly rare to see anywhere. Cheers!
I have to check certain small stores for this, the bigger places sell out the second it hits the shelf. A friend works at the distillery, told me they became too popular too fast and even though they've ramped up. production, they still need it to age in the barrels.
Here in Wichita Kansas it's kind of hard to find. I happen to see it in a small liquor store in a small town close to where i live so i decided to buy a bottle. Very pretty good bourbon and worth $30 a bottle in my opinion. I wouldn't go across town to look for it though, but i wouldn't do that for any bourbon anyway. Neat is the only way to drink it.
I’m with you on the neat only! But that said if you buy any bottle you can drink it how you like. And I totally agree, it’s great for the price but I can’t ever see me going out of my way to get a bottle. Cheers!
Here in the UK it's a great alternative to either Jack Daniels #7 or Jim Beam white label with all three being the 80 proof budget options from three of the biggest heritage distillers in America, if I had the choice (of which I do) I would choose BT over JD or JB on any given day ! Besides the fact that I do currently have three bottles in my collection whereas I don't have either of the JD or JB offerings, that speaks volumes really ! Easy drinking, smooth tasting, and a classic bourbon at a great price (normally around the £19 mark at most supermarkets) which is a great introduction to any new bourbon drinker and makes for a great daily sipper for any bourbon aficionado. The nearest I've ever got to it is the Evan Williams black label, which although it is smooth and full of all those classic bourbon flavours it does however lack that certain something (mainly finish tbh) that BT offers. For me (here in the UK anyway) there is no better option for a budget friendly, low proof and has those classic bourbon flavours than the Buffalo Trace Kentucky straight whiskey. Personally I'd love to get hold of a 90 proof version just to try it and see how it fairs at the higher proof point but alas ! Here in the UK it's a hard beast to get hold of and if you do it's pretty darn expensive. It's a staple in my collection (if you hadn't already guessed that, lol), it's so easy drinking it's dangerous......even at just 80 proof, lol.
For the UK market at least they certainly do, we can get some store picks which are the usual 45% / 90 proof so I’m going to get one of those to see how big a difference there is. Cheers!
@@TheCrumbyBeard i proofed my pour down with a little water to make it 40% and it thinned out became less sweet less honey and toffee notes and the 45% has a bit more peppery spice on the back end. the mouth feel is less creamy as well.
45% 1.75 liter bottle is readily available for $50. 750ml for $25. Grocery store whisky. I can't imagine it more watered down. It would be better at 50%. The fruit intesifies at higher proof.
Cheers! And I totally agree. I managed to get a bottle that was a store pick here in the UK and it was the normal 45%/90 Proof and it’s sooo much better!
I live in Philadelphia and it's pretty easy to find for standard $25 ish.. at least at my local two places I've never had issues. they do have a two bottle at a time limit . It's a solid sipping pour but not worth all the hype to me
How do you compare the Woodford to their double oaked version? I got the double after hearing it was another UA-camrs go too. So glad I got it as I really like it. Just got a Buffalo today from Tesco because they had no Woodford normal. I'm not a whiskey drinker, until this Woodford I've never had any before. Really nice evening sipper to warm up
Woodford regular and Double Oaked are really quite different, I have done a video comparing them; ua-cam.com/video/YxLHzuhhT8s/v-deo.html I think the Buffalo is more representative on Bourbon across the board. I enjoy Woodford but find it quite different to many others, I often recommend it as a good bridging whiskey for going from Scotch to Bourbon or vice-versa. Cheers!
Very hard to get in my area. Very good starter bourbon. Not very complex but has the classic bourbon flavors though they don’t last a long time. I like it and will keep a bottle on my shelf, as long as I can find it for the right price.
Just saw this for the first time at my local abc store, it's coming in at 45% so I probably wouldn't have bought it at 40%, paid about 32.00 usd for it still pretty decent at that price point, not overly complex but enjoyable.
since watching reviews on this i have discovered im not a real whisky drinker lol been enjoying jack daniels and jamesons for decades and thought i would try this. i understand almost nothing whisky drinkers say and still have no idea if i would like this or not. guess i will just have to buy and try lol
Ah no such thing! If you're drinking it, and you enjoy it - you are a real whiskey drinker! Give it a try and see what you think, the UK version isn't the most exciting being at a lower proof, but if in general you enjoy the flavours then looking to their more premium products should be a good route for you. Cheers!
@@TheCrumbyBeard im actually drinking a bottle atm, i cant decide lol i take a sip and think oo thats nice, then the next makes me rethink. then 2 or 3 sips later its nice again lol
Yeah, unfortunately the UK regular is only ever 40% / 80 Proof, however we do have access to some store picks from specialists which do run at the regular 45% / 90 Proof, I'm going to get my hands on one soon and do a comparison. Cheers!
I do wanna point out, Buffalo trace in the states is 26 dollars also it’s 90 proof here and internationally it’s 80 proof. So the Buffalo trace you’re trying will taste different from the Buffalo trace we have in the states.
Something I found out as a result of the comments to this video. I've since managed to find a UK store pick version which is at 90 Proof and WHAT A DIFFERENCE! Cheers!
Have just bought my first Buffalo Trace tonight, had a few goes at it, nice I would say but agree, its immediately noticeable being "watered down". Recent Bourbons I've had in addition to the BT are Wild Turkey 101, Elija Craig Small Batch, Woodford Reserve. These are all way better IMO in the order stated. So far nothing beast WT101, its just too good
BT is a funny one, the difference between the UK supermarket 40% version and a barrel pick at 45% is wild, so if you ever get chance, don't be immediately turned off. That said, Eagle Rare is about the same price as the barrel pick, is also 45% and is also BT product so might be wiser to try that first to see if you actually like BT and the standard is just too tame, or if its just not for you at all. I agree with your ranking otherwise though I must say. Cheers!
Yeah I'd always sip Makers too tbh! I think it's one of those, like Buffalo Trace, that is plenty complex enough on its own without needing to add anything to it. Cheers!
just getting into bourbon myself and still learning.. started on jim beam white label, then a cheap dixie petes, jd ( worst so far), wild turkey 101, markers mark and just ordered woodford reserve.. buffalo trace is next..did polish off a jameson black barrel although not a bourbon it is so far my favorite.. great review, cheers 👍🏻
You're making good progress in to the style! And that Jameson Black Barrel is very under-rated, beautiful dram that is! Be interested to know how you get on with Woodford and also Bulleit when you get there as they are both less in the dominant bourbon flavour profile as many you've tried. Cheers!
@TheCrumbyBeard well the woodford has arrived, fire is lit, feet are up and I'm sipping my first one 😁 mmmm what can I say as a newbie 🤔 it more or less tastes the same as the others 😌 now I've had 2 guiness for starters and I have put some ice in it... would maybe say it's a bit more fruity?.. I will have to rack up 3 or 4 different ones in a line and see if i can really get these different notes and flavours from each one.. saying that I may not be fit for anything by the end of my tasting session except bed 😂 buffalo trace is in the shopping basket for next Saturday.. not a bad hobby this 😅
@@j8oi300 haha, now it’s all personal opinion of course, I find Woodford has more antiseptic and cleansing notes that I personally associate with some Scotch whiskies. It still has the sweet and fruity bourbon hit but I find something a little less easy-going in there, and tbh that’s why I like it! Side-by-side with something else like the BT will likely show this up much more than on its own though.
@TheCrumbyBeard the buff has arrived 😁 also now in my possession, a crystal whiskey glass and a big ice ball maker.. feeling quite posh, is a house coat, slippers and a cigar over the top 😅 buffalow over woodford definitely... the woodford is not sweet enough for me.. the higher the % the less I like it it would seem.
@@j8oi300 haha, go get that smoking jacket, no such thing as OTT when enjoying a dram! I wouldn’t get hung up on ABV, if you’re just starting out then yeah sure 40-45% will feel much easier, but some higher ABV drops are even sweeter, and in time you’ll get used to stronger options and suddenly realise they have more to offer. Everyone has their sweet spot though. For me it’s 50% right now.
Well done. I have had numerous bottles of BT when it was bottled at more than 40%. It's enjoyable but nothing remarkable. Just because Buffalo Trace makes Pappy (which is vastly overhyped) doesn't mean that Buffalo Trace bourbon is anything more than one more STANDARD bourbon. People are so irrational sometimes, especially when it comes to bandwagon bourbon hype.
I was really confused when I first saw people hyping it, I really couldn't quite get my head around it. Sure, it's good - but hype worthy? Nah. Cheers!
@TheCrumbyBeard well that explains why it's so thin. Bummer because the extra 5% really helps it out! I use it as one of my go to mixers and make a cocktail called a 'Kentucky Smoke' with a smoked ice cube. Phenomenal!
I have tried BT after leaving and coming back several times and I know that there is no arguing with taste so i say this. I cannot get into this bourbon although it is certainly drinkable there are a lot of bourbons for less (and slightly more) that are better to my palate. My sweet spot is 100 proof but 90 is fine. I think Evan Williams black or BIB and Wild Turkey 101 are all better than BT and are universally available everywhere. Just my 2 cents.
I'll take a WT101 over the UK's standard 40% BT any day! However, I have a 45% / 90 Proof BT barrel pick and that is a leap above, much closer to Eagle Rare in quality. Though the WT101 is still a load cheaper so it may still win out. BT products in general are quite sweet though so it may just be that. I really do enjoy them, but not all the time. Cheers!
I keep trying but not a fan of WT 101. Buffalo Trace however is a favorite and at $23 retail is a bargain. I've paid up to $32 for it when hard to find but I wont go much over that. On a side note, you're going to LOVE that Stagg. Found one at retail and opened it that night. Whoa. Careful though because it does not drink like a 130 proof bourbon.
I can see why some might not get with WT101 - I really enjoy how much it changes but probably not something all would appreciate. Really looking forward to the Stagg. Had to pay overs for it unfortunately so saving it for a special event before opening but as soon as I do it’ll be making many video appearances 😂
Its not terribly hard to find in Jersey, but in my part of PA... it's still haard to find... but I don't think that will last... went to my local store last month... they had half a trucks worth of cases of it stacked up... I went back the next morning... they were all gone. So it still gets snapped up... but seems like they are producing much, much MUCH more lately... I expect itll be on the shelves here soon. Agree with you... nice, drinkable.... I like wt101 better, to be honest.
Hopefully that increase volume continues and makes it just easier to pick up whenever you feel like it, and that it also gets passed up the line to increase volumes of Eagle Rare, EH Taylor, Stagg etc. Cheers!
That would be incredible! But I suspect because they keep their barrel proof offerings for their more premium brands (Stagg etc), we sadly won't see one any time soon!
It's around £55-60 ($70-75 USD) at the moment but I'm sure when I picked this up it was on offer around £45 ($55) - I have reviewed it and pitched it against some other bottles. Cheers!
Yeah, sadly not here. Though it is possible to get at 90 proof in some specialist stores, but it's not always available. Next time I spot one I'll be sure to give it a go. Cheers!
Used to pick it up for 19.99 but now it’s 26.99 it’s still good at that price but if it goes higher than 30 I’m not interested anymore. I’d rather have wild Turkey 101 for still 19.99 in my area
Oh wow that's a huge difference to here. The RRP on 101 is about double here in the UK, whereas BT is about the same as yours, though at only 80 proof sadly. Cheers!
Unfortunately here OF100 is not the same price at all. I can only find that in 1 litre bottles at double the price of Buffalo Trace. But, I will get one soon! Cheers!
Every Buffalo trace distillery product has become almost impossible to get near me, the one store that I know can consistently get BT gets it once a month and sells out in a day
US version is 45% but international sadly is usually 40%, I managed to pick up a US version a few weeks ago and have a video comparing the two; ua-cam.com/video/69cbeahiszo/v-deo.html Cheers!
46 and Rare Breed are a level up so would expect far more interesting things. I’ll be pitching those two against each other at some point for sure. Cheers 🥃

since watching reviews on this i have discovered im not a real whisky drinker lol been enjoying jack daniels and jamesons for decades and thought i would try this. i understand almost nothing whisky drinkers say and still have no idea if i would like this or not. guess i will just have to buy and try lol
Here in the U.S. Buffalo Trace is 45% or 90 proof. as of Dec. 2023.
Cheers!
@@TheCrumbyBeard another one I would suggest is early times bottle in bond if you can find it
It’s 45% here
Brilliant review thanks
Thank you!
Cheers!
Woodford reserve is regularly on sale is about 25 quid. It's delicious. I'm not as fond of makers.i like makers as a sipper not a mixer.
Yeah I'd always sip Makers too tbh! I think it's one of those, like Buffalo Trace, that is plenty complex enough on its own without needing to add anything to it. Cheers!
My go to here in Australia, love it. ER even better!!
Does Australia get the US 45% version? Or the UK 40%?
40% here like UK
it more expseive in sweden then four roses small batch. and small batch 90 proof. havent tried bt yet tho
I don't think I'd pay more than any Four Roses products for it, assuming it's the regular export 40% / 80 proof version!
@@TheCrumbyBeard yea bt here is 80 proof one. four roses small batch is sure hell lot batter value.
just getting into bourbon myself and still learning.. started on jim beam white label, then a cheap dixie petes, jd ( worst so far), wild turkey 101, markers mark and just ordered woodford reserve.. buffalo trace is next..did polish off a jameson black barrel although not a bourbon it is so far my favorite.. great review, cheers 👍🏻
I would pay up to 50 for it!!! My go to.
Nah. Cheers!
40 or 45%? It's 45 here in the states.
Standard UK / Euro bottles are 40% - we can get the 45% in store picks etc but are very rare to see.
A fantastic and cheap bourbon 🥃
Absolutely is!
Cheers!
its easy to find one the east coast more than west coast
just grabbed a bottle for 21.99 on Sale.
Great find! What did you think to it?
@@TheCrumbyBeard I think it is a great buy. It has something for both the seasoned drinker and those new to Bourbon.
Buffalo trace bourbon should be doing a barrel proof
That would be incredible! But I suspect because they keep their barrel proof offerings for their more premium brands (Stagg etc), we sadly won't see one any time soon!
It’s 90 proof in the US so a little more kick
I've since managed to get a store pick which is at the US 90 Proof and compared them, massive difference!
Excellent bourbon
How much did the Wild Turkey Rare Breed (on the shelf) set you back in the UK, TCB? That's a great pour.
It's around £55-60 ($70-75 USD) at the moment but I'm sure when I picked this up it was on offer around £45 ($55) - I have reviewed it and pitched it against some other bottles. Cheers!
Down at £19 in my local ASDA, what a steal
Nice!!
Eagle rare is same mash bill as buffalo trace and so is Stagg and eh Taylor and benchmark and old charter.
Here in the States - 90 proof
Yeah, sadly not here. Though it is possible to get at 90 proof in some specialist stores, but it's not always available. Next time I spot one I'll be sure to give it a go. Cheers!
Eagle Rare is the same mash bill as Buffalo trace.
Cheers!
@@TheCrumbyBeard I️ wonder if buffalo trace does that because of the scotch market
@@Thompson892 the vast majority of our supermarket whiskies are at 40% so it’s possible, or it may be a tax/duty related thing.
I got a liter for 50 bucks
had buffalo trace for the first time today. think four roses is better.
I don't disagree with you tbh!
It’s all over Southern California for $25
I like it, but no more than any other shelf bourbon. To me, OF 100 is better at the same price.
Unfortunately here OF100 is not the same price at all. I can only find that in 1 litre bottles at double the price of Buffalo Trace. But, I will get one soon! Cheers!
Every Buffalo trace distillery product has become almost impossible to get near me, the one store that I know can consistently get BT gets it once a month and sells out in a day
That's madness! It is good for sure but if it became difficult to get I don't know if I'd put too much effort in to getting it frequently.
at 40% boring .the 45% better. But much better options out there in price range (NZ)
I get it at 45%
US version is 45% but international sadly is usually 40%, I managed to pick up a US version a few weeks ago and have a video comparing the two; ua-cam.com/video/69cbeahiszo/v-deo.html Cheers!
Saw this at my local Vons for $26
For the money its bloody brilliant, is it the best fuck no, but you're be spending alot more to get better
Very good point - though it seems the US gets a much better deal with it being 45% standard vs the UKs 40% abv. Cheers!
@@TheCrumbyBeard we are all ways getting ripped off in the UK it's just standard procedure 😂
Supposed to be 45%
The international version is only 40% on the BT. Managed to find a proper 45% store pick more recently. Big difference!
Not a fan of BT. Would rather pay a little more for 1792, Makers 46, or Rare Breed
46 and Rare Breed are a level up so would expect far more interesting things. I’ll be pitching those two against each other at some point for sure. Cheers 🥃
*It’s 45% abv
In the US it is - 40% internationally, though we can get bottle picks that are 45% - I've done a comparison with those since this video. Cheers!
@@TheCrumbyBeard interesting 🤔
It’s 90 proof not 80.
UK/Euro version is 80 proof / 40% - I’ve since done a comparison between it and a 90 proof version. Cheers 🥃
Bullet is toilet water.
Idk why but bulleit is horrid to me
Many feel the same way, I usually put it down to the high rye content which personally I quite enjoy but I do have to be in the mood for it. Cheers!
He's trying awfully hard to find good things to say.
45% 90 Proof
In the US it is, sadly in the UK the normal version is only 40% 80 Proof. I’m going to try and get a US import to compare soon.
I never knew that, thanks for letting me know. Eagle Rare is even better, I really like the Weller brand but cannot afford to drink that too often. Adios...@@TheCrumbyBeard
Buffalo Trace is 45% genius.
It's 40% in the UK sadly.
