this method absolutely works .stuart is correct inmentioning to check all solder points.what i also suggest is to stretch the springs out a bit, five years later my clock is still working.
I couldn't wait until weekend. I just did the process, first tried only cleaning the contacts, it worked for a few seconds, then I proceeded to reheat just the 4 resistors and cleaned thoroughly with an electronics cleaner., and it worked as a charm, finally until many years the clock is back on. Hopefully it will stay on for many more years now.
