    I learned what ‘variegation’ means the cute way: during the winter my previously neglected Pothos would look solid green and have no growth (my kitchen is quite dark). After I took it outside, next week all its leaves were variegated again! 💖

    Very good information! Pothos is seriously my favorite plant. I have 7 potted plants and several propagating vases full of them. I personally keep them in plastic because i don't like Terra Cotta pots and because of that i wait even 3 weeks to water them again. I have south facing window but because i live in quite a forested area, the trees the window screen cover s lot of the light so i have no choice but to keep the lights on all day long and believe it or not, they're still growing even in winter. I also have the fan on on low to allow for good air flow especially Because i mist my plants just because I feel tempted to water them. Since they grow for me year round, fertilize them year round with a heavily diluted solution of miracle gro water soluble fertilizer and they love it. I only have Hawaiian, golden and Jade Pothos at the moment but I definitely see myself owning a Neon and a Yesenia Pothos in the future 🌿

    If you let the pothos root too long in water, simply use this method. Use a wide neck vessel of water. Add a scoop of soil every few days. When you need to add water, add dirt too. Eventually, you won’t have room for more dirt. Let it need water twice without dirt, then transfer to a draining pot without shock for root transition.

    my favorite part of this life is hearing you pronounce plant related names

  • @oh.chrysalis
    @oh.chrysalis 2 роки тому +14

    “aureum” and “pinnatum” are actually the specific epithet! It’s a super common mistake, but a species name actually includes the genus as well because some plants in other genera may have the same specific epithet. Since we already know you’re talking about Epipremnum, you could write it as “E. pinnatum”. The specific epithet is also always written in lowercase and both genus and specific epithet should be italicized. Taxonomy is a whole thing in itself lol

    Hi Kat!
    I've gotten rather comfortable with my pothos over the years but still glad to go over these tips with you :)
    I've had 6 varieties:
    -golden
    -neon
    -marble queen
    -pearls & jade
    -scindapsus pictus
    -s. pictus 'exotica'
    in my northern window (Canada!) and they've actually grown a lot more than I'd expect! Maybe a foot in a year. My GOLDEN pothos is throwing tantrums, though, losing leaves weekly!
    My best is my MQ, which is so weird since it has such high variegation! No idea what I'm doing right and wrong with these guys.
    I just wanted to mention that I took cuttings from ALL 6 varieties I have, and everybody rooted in water within a few weeks to a month EXCEPT the neon pothos! It rotted! I had this issue with previous attempts too. I wonder why the neon pothos is so dramatic, lol
    As always, astounded by your channel's growth and super happy for you :)
    Happy planting!

    In regards to your prop boxes, do you have to do anything to keep the humidity in your plastic containers so the humidity stays high? I have one now that I had to put my alocasia frydek in and had to put exercise resistance bands around it so that it would insulate the box better. As soon as I did that there was actually moisture buildup on the inside of the box! I was just wondering if there was a better way to insulate it without the bands lol

    Light = growlight

      @hollypuckett3931 2 роки тому

      Issues presenting on leaf tips is most always going to be a watering concern. Likely minerals and salts in the tap water or going too long between watering. I would bump the humidity as well if you're able, shoot for at least 50%

    • @GoodandPlanty
      @GoodandPlanty  2 роки тому +1

      hard to say without seeing your space! could be the tap water depending on where you live. could also be over fertilizing or drafts.

      I'm too afraid of rot that's why I wait for the older leaves to droop

    • @hollypuckett3931
      @hollypuckett3931 2 роки тому

      @@sallofatani It's impossible for anyone not there to say definitively what it is or isn't but these things are most likely. A humidifier will raise your relative humidity for the whole room but that's obviously your preference.
      Sometimes waiting too long to water can cause rot as well because the roots begin to die off and aren't able to uptake moisture so instead they sit in the moisture and rot. Best to find a happy medium. I think once your soil is dry, you can water whether they're dropping or not. For situations like you described where you can't feel the soil, I like to use a bamboo chopstick and put it in as deep as you can and pull it out. Only moist soil will stick and you can see how deeply down the soil is still holding moisture 👌

    Epipremnum aureum (golden pothos, marble queen, njoy, manjula, etc.) and Epipremnum pinnatum (Dragontail, Cebu Blue) are not real pothos. The real pothos include scandens which is also endemic to my country.

  • @karikristinehaugberg3890
    @karikristinehaugberg3890 2 роки тому +2

    Oh wow, I get so confused when people call Epipremnun aureum "pothos". Pothos is a genus in itself, so everytime you say "golden pothos", my head hears weird incorrect mixes like "deliciosa syngonium", "carnosa anthurium", and "Thai constellation philodendron" 🙈🙈🙈.
    Golden pothos= doesn't exist, it's the Epipremnun aureum, calling it a pothos is super confusing. (Just like some people are used to calling scindapsis "satin pothos" or "silver pothos". No. It's scindapsis)
    The more correct common name, if the real name isn't easy enough, would be golden vine - that doesn't infringe on another plant's genus, anyway.
    I'd love a Pothos, but they just don't sell it most places. Which is so ironic when Epipremnum (especiallyy E. aureum) is super duper common in many regions around the world. But it's not a Pothos. Just, no.

    • @GoodandPlanty
      @GoodandPlanty  2 роки тому +3

      agreed! i was hoping this video would clarify some of that confusion :) plantmeashley has a good video on the topic of actual pothos

    • @karikristinehaugberg3890
      @karikristinehaugberg3890 2 роки тому

      @@GoodandPlanty She does! Such a fascinating history! It does annoy me that people still call Epipremnun "Pothos" even though they know it's a different genus. Like, if it was another name that wasn't another genus it would be totally normal and fine, but every single time someone refers to an Epipremnum as a Pothos makes me cringe 😅.
      People who don't know the difference can't help it, of course - it's not their fault "everyone" calls these wonderful plants by an incorrect name, but people who know - that just makes me sad. And annoyed. But I also get it - growing up learning a name of such a common plant makes it super hard to change! It becomes so automatic.
      But I think it's worth it. Especially considering how fun the real Pothos is! The genus does have a couple beautiful vining varieties, but oh goodness, all the shinglers! So fun!
