- The Mayor hires a vampire to poison the adults of Sunnydale with some addicting chocolate that turn all of them into their baddest selves, so that they can kidnap four babies and offer them as tribute to a demon snake living in the sewers. That's what happens.

Buffy’s mom Joyce lost all of her maternal instincts and went full giddy and girly with a thing for bad boys. And Buffy’s mentor Giles reverted back to his teenage self, a chain-smoking street tough nicknamed Ripper. Joyce liked bad boys, Giles was suddenly a bad boy-you know where this is going? No one wants to imagine their parents having sex. Kudos to a hilarious episode!
I hope all you guys don’t have to miss an episode for a while, because a bunch of great ones have started!
You guys have to be in love with the show by now
Happy New Year ! The Normies. 2023!
Never say "no one wants" on the internet no matter how disturbing.
That thick accent Giles uses is Anthony Stewart Head’s actual accent. He puts on the posh accent for the show.
Yeah, in real life he sounds more akin to Spike. Oh and he does have a pierced ear too.
@@Silver-rx1mh which is funny since James Marsters is american
@@crowthewicked8344 Oh I know. I'v met JM on many an occasion. :)
@@crowthewicked8344 yeah James Marsters said he improved his accent as he spent more time with A.S.H. behind the scenes and basically Spikes' accent is an imitation of real life Giled 😜
I believe he said that he learned to speak like that because that's what his parents didn't what him to do and he wanted to blend in in certain groups ( sonmething like that🤔)
I absolutely adore how Chris yells, "Giles is a thug, I love him! I fucking love him!"
Buffy physically removing a cigarette from Giles' mouth and putting it out with her foot when he tried to scold her will never not make me laugh
Oh yeah, we all laughed like hell at the time and I still laugh like hell all these years later. Snyder, Joyce and Giles on the band candy never fail to entertain.
"Whoa summers you drive like a spaz" always makes me laugh. 😂😂😂😂
I know! But they laughed over it and I was sad.
Okay Ripper Giles is fun, but on rewatches, I freaking love Kristine Sutherland as teenage Joyce. Girl's modus operandi was "matronly" for three seasons and then this episode came along and she was clearly having the time of her life.
Since the 10 yr 20 yr anniversary interviews, Kristine Sutherland's named this as prob her fav episode since it really was fun to 'act young', have an excuse to reenact what it was being a teenager. She said she didn't realize that by doing the posturing and behavior of a teenager again, besides the fun feeling of being young, all these feelings of being insecure came back that she had totally forgotten about. Interesting insight into what it's like being a teenager.
She also said making out with Anthony Stewart Head was pretty fun 👌🏼
I love that Buffy can't drive. Relatable
I do too. It’s like the one aspect of her life where the ‘dizzy blonde,’ pre-slayer persona still has a presence.
Congratulations! You've unlocked tai chi Angel
Buffy and Cordy try to prove who is the real Queen Bee in the last episode and in this episode we learn that Joyce blows them both out of the water.
Another great Halloween episode. I loved Buffy's grimace as Joyce hands her handcuffs "Never tell me." lol
This is an absolute favorite episode of many Buffy fans...it's just so fun!
The ep where you realise that Buffy's mom has got it going on! Story goes that the cast and crew bonded with the babies so much they cried when they left the set.
I like how young Giles still knows not to fuck with Buffy.
Not much to say about this episode other than it's great, and their response to Giles makes me sad we never got that Ripper prequel show.
oh man, the ripper show plus the faith show still kills me that was never made.
Yeah, we all laughed at these episodes when they first came out. This one is a classic!
Even though they're called "filler episodes", they always have repercussions down the line.
I know! Buffy gets a sister after this.
Yes. Yes, they do. 😎
@@wizofauzz That just Dawned on me!🥁😆
This is not a filler episode
It's been super fun to rewatch this with The normies. I totally forgot some of the filler episodes.
Band Candy- snyder was the absolute highlight this episode
Re rana's question at the end: I laughed just as hard as you all when I watched this when it aired. I do think you all seem to enjoy some of the 'bad' episodes like go fish more than when it aired back in the day.
Yep. They do a good job of making the bad episodes feel fun.
@@djsosonut Even the “bad” eps usually have some good character moments here and there
@@Crinbo Completely Agree. There is usually something worthwhile in every episode of the Buffyverse. Momnents that foreshow new direction or highlight a character trait/flaw that'll be developed later one. Just sometimes you have to wade through a lot of drek to get to those moments. But Buffyverse drek is above regular tv drek..so it's usually not that much of a chore.
Buffy may be hot stuff when it comes to demonology, but when it comes to her mom, Giles is the Slay-her lol
This is definitely one of the shows best and most enjoyable episodes
Also “Whoa, Summers! You drive like a spaz!” May be my favorite quote from the entire show.
I always forget that Buffy has so many episodes made for TheNormies.
Absolute top-tier episode! Ethan's appearances are always a blast and this is the best of them. Loved seeing Kristine Sutherland (Joyce), Armin Shimerman (Snyder), and ASH all getting to play against type - Ripper!Giles is such a blast, and this is the ultimate Mom/Dad 'ship. And these reactions make even the best episodes better - glad you had the full couch for this one!
(Giles and Joyce listening to that Cream album 😭)
Armin Shimerman was basically Quark in this episode.
Ethan is great cuz since he worships the God of chaos everything he does doesn't have to make sense because CHAOS lol
5:33 As a grown adult I can tell you that yes, I absolutely demolish a block of chocolate in one sitting. Adulthood begins when you realise that there's literally nobody with the authority to stop you from doing this.
To Rana asking if people laughed as much at this episode when it first aired, YES we did! My fav line from this episode is still, " I took Tae Kwan Do at the Y". It inspired us to describe people we thought of as wankers as someone who looked like they Took Tae Kwan Do at the Y🙂
One of the best episodes. Ethan is always fun. Snyder , Joyce and Giles were awesome.
I've been binge watching you guys for the past 4 days watching Buffy and I'm glad that I came across this channel. As a Buffy fan I am glad that everybody is enjoying the series.
Their reaction to Giles and Joyce's moments is so different from their reaction to Xander and Willow's moments. It's funny how opposite they are. xD
As someone who watched this when it aired, I can confirm that I laughed just as much as you guys if not more. This episode is a favorite 😂
This is where I’ve always felt that season 3 really takes off. A lot of people love season 3. I do as well, but I’ve always thought it takes a bit too long to reach its stride.
i have been looking forward to the reaction to this one so much! such a fun episode
BUFFY: So are you just gonna show up once every season to cause general mischief and mayhem?
ETHAN RAYNE: Yep!
Best bit: WHOOAA SUMMERS! YOU DRIVE LIKE A SPAZZZZ!!!!
Apparently in the UK, that is a term for the very unwoke. Tiger had to apologize to the whole country once when he said he putted like a spaz.
@@visarr Boooooooooo.
A definite fan favorite, this episode. SO funny! I especially love Giles and Joyce. So surreal.
Season 3 is the funnest season. It’s got the least heart wrenching drama and the most fun episodes. Absolute banger season!
Funnily enough, the drama is on the bad guy's side. Much as I love Nathan Fillion, The Mayor is definitely my favorite villain in the series.
This is still one of the most enjoyable episodes
This is one of my favorite episodes
17:53 I love how everyone had the exact same reaction as me the first time I saw this episode 20 years ago. 😂😂😂. I love that y’all have been getting into this classic show
Love how much you guys got a kick out of this one. It's just so damn funny, Snyder is the highlight and always will be. The Billy Joel reference made me feel old but at least he is still around having concerts.
didnt expect a Pitch Meeting reference in a Buffy reaction lmao
3:19 the "I didn't know you could do that" is most likely in reference to his current physical state, not Buffy thinking he didn't know Tai chi (I mean she have seen him fight on several occupations).
Always entertaining to watch you guys react to the fun episodes. Knew you'd love this one!
I absolutely love juvenile Giles. Now it also makes sense that he knew how to short-circuit a car. The mother was also great.
Suraj, if you want to watch this version of Principle Snyder watch Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. Quark, played by Armin Shimerman, is always up to shenanigans including sneaking onto random Federation starships like Snyder does at 10:44.
DS9 is the best Star Trek
1:13 Flippidy-dippidy? We also would have accepted “flippidy-do-daw”
It looked like Rana's world was shattered during this episode.
Omg I forgot the premise of this episode until Giles said “freak out.” I LOVE this fucking episode.
I resist the temptation to look up what order episodes aired in, so I can be surprised each week. I was SO psyched when I saw the title. This is one of the best episodes in possibly the best season.
Ben,some ep #'s I remember the title but I did have to look up what ep they were on before I saw the title. I just get giddy all the good stuff ahead this season(and future)
They should watching the ep where buffy can read minds. "You had sec with Giles....on the hood of a car....twice!!" 😂😂
14:24 A great example of using 'British swearing' to get past the American censors. This is not the only time they do this with Giles or Spike.
19:34 I think that must be the most phallic demon we've seen so far.
21:20 I think it's pretty clear from their awkwardness that they already 'did something' before Buffy turned up.
Teachers purposefully messing with how the answers work also doesn't help those multiple choice answers.
The episode's writer was dressed as the lunch lady while Snyder was passing the main cast band candy to sell.
By now, Joyce should assume Buffy wouldn't disappear on a bus because she should know by now it was her saying two phrases that made Buffy do so, and nearly repeat, once she got back ("if you walk out of this house, don't even think about coming back" from _Becoming Part Two_ & "It was better when she was gone" from _Dead Man's Party,_ which, to me, blows all defense of the first quote out the window). Joyce has more to learn about being a parent from this episode (especially when this, combined with the movie, the comic, and the OG movie script, show that Buffy's mom acted like this before S1, and is why she was saying things in S1 like "the parenting books all say I should learn to say no" instead of already being able to say no to a sixteen year old) than Buffy does about needing parents.
The reaction to Buffy driving with the parking brake on and Joyce/Giles kissing, Buffy catching them kissing, and the handcuffs was so great.
Running after Ethan, to me, has always been one of the most noticeable same set scene usages.
I've never seen anyone not happy at Giles reaction to Ethan being hit by Buffy.
Listening to theories on The Mayor is interesting.
I agree that those catalogues taught kids to both be disappointed and about sales at the same time.
I love watching you guys react to buffy lmao y'all crazyy
Ahhhh, I love this episode.
Can’t wait for them to watch ‘Earshot’!
YAY!!!! Been waiting on this episode since like Season 1 when we were first introduced to the notion of "Ripper". I remember it having clicked in my head how just zero fucks a Brit must have to take on the nickname of Ripper. Some in that comment thread thought that maybe Giles didn't fully embrace that nickname....but no, this episode shows that in fact Giles had ZERO FUCKS in his youth. Just an absolute rebel who didn't care what people may think of him embracing the Ripper nickname.
Cause Jack the Ripper hasn't been the only Ripper in English history. But that name is given to their serial killers that prefer to use knives and things. So yeah, in British society it must be in VERY poor taste for someone to call themselves the Ripper. And the person using that nickname is a ZERO FUCKS GIVEN type of person to not care that it's a societal taboo.
Armin Shimerman is such a fantastic actor.
This is one of my top ten episodes.
I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS EPISODE, YES
Referencing Ryan George in a Buffy reaction video is tight!!
I literally went around to the neighbors I knew and sold to them and then I gave it to my parents to take to work. I raked up 🤣
I had to sell these awful clear plastic Christmas ornaments, and candy…yes, I was in band, went on to orchestra, marching band in high school and college, and eventually became a solo horn player w a 52 week orchestra! Gotta love the Buff…!
Haha!! I totally forgot about the New Brunswick reference about the car!! Yeah, it's in Canada. I just geeked out about it because I live next to New Brunswick.
I love this episode ! So funny and epic !!! Love your reaction on this one and Buffy in general. The chocolate have the effect to bring the adults in their high school years. See Giles the Ripper it's enjoyable and Joyce like Buffy before she became the Slayer. A lot of laugh with this one 😂
My favorite fun episode! Been waiting for this one.
As for Angel. He was in a hell dimension for who knows how long...he is seriously messed up but not evil.
Definitely one of the top fun episodes!!
The older actors were so much fun to watch, especially with Joyce and Giles.
ETA: omg Micky’s story about going door-to-door 🤣
I only saw this episode in a re-run, myself, but yeah, I laughed out loud a lot, when I first saw it. :)
One of my favorite episodes!
I sold band / orchestra candy in high school, but nothing like this ever happened. 😉😆🤣
Yes . We laughed as hard as you guys did . Not sure if teens of the nineties laughed as hard but twenty and thirty something’s of the nineties definitely did 😂 Glad it still holds up .
I love this episode.
7:43 Giles and Joyce listening to Cream: Tales of Brave Ulysses.
Remember this. It will be "referenced" much later in the story.
Micky is the first person in any of the Buffy reactions I've seen to point out Giles is in fact wearing eye liner in the hospital. Such a subtle change compared to the rest (his demeanour and fashion sense).
Lol the Description 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Yes, we laughed. I thought it was the funniest show on TV at the time and set a different standard for comedy. Still one of the funniest shows ever.
Hello guys. You know what that means, Buffy is going a sibling😆.
Time to add some classic Burt Reynolds to the wheel.
Comedy Overload with Snyder stealing the show! Band Candy always a fan favourite. Great to see all the adults acting like brat horny teenagers. Funniest part was when Joyce says to Giles 'your like Burt Reynolds' He was about the most famous Hollywood Film Star of the 1970s! That's what makes younger people reacting to this show so entertaining. The part at the end too was also very funny when Joyce and Giles see each other again and turn away embarrassed. Many have said the serious message in this episode was about the dangers of 'spiking' of drinks, drugs etc with the juxtaposition of the adults as teenagers.
Xander and willow cheating is soo Negly
Channeling Aphrodisia, I see. Thanks to you, I'm going to start working this word into my everyday vocabulary (emphasis on the 2nd syllable, of course).
hold up is that bong mug? mug bong?
I’ve always loved Band Candy. It’s fun.
Guys I love it when you try but the phrase is “Jog on” not “Jog off”
Feels like only yesterday I saw band candy
Probably when they're seeing the angel turn in youtube
Do ya have a different opinion about Giles yet, Normies? He didn't get the nickname because he was a Saint. LMAO!!! This episode was/is/always will be AWESOME!!! (IMO that is) Great Post.
Naked Angel is always a pleasure to watch! dont be jealous guys
one of my favorite episodes, no doubt.
Yep, I definitely ship Joyles (Gice?)!!!
hell yes!! Band candy!!!!!!
Thank you.
One of the best!
I would have hung out with young Giles.
@Chris Low brass represent!
Think this is my fav ever buffy episode :)
Toss up with Living Conditions..
While it is not among my favourite Buffy episodes, it's one I enjoy a lot and almost never skip (on re-watches and reactions). It's just so funny, a bit over the top and so crazy in a good way. I kinda ship Joyce and Giles a bit.
I only skip a certain mental institution episode..I’ve always hated the “is it all just fantasy, a dream, they were all dead” garbage…
Idk if you guys actually read these but I watched buffy every Tuesday at 8pm on the WB and yes I laughed more than you guys. Buffy is a great show season 3 is great so are the rest but 6 is very dark and you will see spike again!
2:30 yes, what is wrong with chicago? I am flying to chicago in 18 hours, what is wrong with it? Do I need to get out of there quickly? My friend will be picking me up from the airport to take me down to Indianapolis but can I not stay and look around chicago first? FOR THE LOVE OF GOD TELL ME WHAT IS WRONG WITH CHICAGO?
I think this is the most the couch have laughed in a Buffy episode?
This is a great episode, but I get sad when I remember when "Band Candy" is referenced again ;_; (Hint: it's THAT season 5 episode)
Get ready for Lovers Walk, they thought it was hilarious.
My favorite ship
Joyce is so damn fine.
lol where's Faith in all this
Babies are tasty.
Yea whatever the candy was it was MDMA, THC, and some Cocaine with a bit of black magic.
Ok so Joss Whedon is a pretty shitty person, let's just establish that up-front. He is also a great writer. He writes great dialogue & great characters. His style strives to place comedy & melodrama in the same scene, often happening at the same time. He feels (& I agree) that the mix of those two things is really the essence of life. In this show, his earliest iteration of that style, the juxtaposition of those two elements can often feel jarring but as he progressed as a writer he learned to blend the two to much better & more natural effect. He peaks, for me, in Firefly. That show is utterly hilarious, tragic, ridiculous & dramatic in near-perfect measure.
Yeah, Joss was a genius on his creation. Just not so much with handling people
Trash human being, but an excellent storyteller, and I enjoy what he's created despite his personal shortcomings.
He’s as much as said so himself..I’ve listened to all the extras on Buffy, there were several telling things he said about himself..but from the others’ reactions to him on the commentaries, you’d never know about anything that’s been revealed lately..
