  • Cars come and go, rulesets come and go too. But one car turned up in Australia and destroyed everyone so hard for three years they had to get rid of it and re-wrote the rule book to suit the 'home grown' cars in the series.
Turbocharged, four wheel drive, four wheel steering and utterly dominant. Dominating the already popular and fast Ford Sierra Cosworths. There's a reason they called it Godzilla!

It never hurt that Jim Richards was driving Godzilla. That man was like a metronome on the race track, lap after lap he would be on the exact same line and the exact same speed. Rarely the outright quickest when I saw him but always the smoothest. Best driver I have ever seen on a racetrack in Australia (excluding the Grand Prix of course).

    • @formulafish1536
      @formulafish1536 7 місяців тому +6

Say what you like, he is the best touring car driver to ever set foot in Australia. No one has ever been as adaptable, consistent, fast and with the longevity of Jim. The closest would probably be SVG, or Scotty Mac.
I mean. Jim drove everything and was competitive in everything. Targa? Won it. Touring Cars? Won everything. NASCAR/AUSCAR? Won. Super Tourers? Won that too. Carrera Cup? You bet.bAnd of course, many years of Touring Car Masters with huge success.
Peter Brock is the King of the Mountain, with Craig Lowndes the Prince. Larry Perkins is the Endurance Man. Glenn Seton the Baby-Faced Assassin, Dick Johnson was Tricky Dicky, and virtually owned Lakeside, but Jim was the King of Australian Tin Tops.

I think his attitude of wanting to be as far away from the limelight is why he's forgotten. There were 3 kiwis fighting at the top in f1 in the 60s, Bruce, Chris and Denny. Denny is the one most kiwi race fans haven't heard of yet he's our only f1 world champion. Every one knows the name McLaren, so many know of Amon thanks to being call the best driver not to win a Grand Prix. But Hulme is largely forgotten

"Godzilla" actually got its name from a local motoring magazine, "Wheels" who back in 1989 gave the car it's moniker on the front cover of its July issue before the car had even made it on to an Australian racetrack, and never has a name been more apt. As one of the few fans who had been following the Gibson Motor Sport Nissans since the days of the Bluebirds in 1982/83/84, Godzilla will always be my favourite Australian Touring Car. The ATCC was at its most exciting in the decade before the start of the Supercar era, it was ruined by the Ford v Holden battles we have been forced to endure for the last 30 years.

Out of the final hairpin on the Adelaide Street Circuit, only the Formula One's and the Formula Holden's (both open wheel) were quicker than the GT-R. Their biggest strength was always the 4WD.

Part of the reason the podium got so rowdy was the track announcer. Back in those days the TV commentary wasn't broadcast around the track like it is today, the track had its own announcer commentating on the race. When the race was red flagged the idiot track announcer told everyone that Dick Johnson had won, so all the Ford fans flocked to the podium only to find out that wasn't true. That's why it got so out of hand.
I was there that that year with a group of mates, one of whom was clued up on racing rules and he suggested that as it had been red flagged the results would be wound back to previous laps. Of course he was right, but we clearly heard the track announcer say that DJ had won and he was doubtful that that was correct. We were legging it to the carpark to get the hell out of there (mostly because of the weather - as is well documented it was a doozy of a rainstorm and it caused total chaos) so we didn't witness the podium shenanigans. Confusion reigned, and as we were driving out we still didn't know who had officially won, but we watched it later when we got home and saw the podium. We all agreed we made the right decision to leave when we did. It didn't turn violent in the end, but it easily could have.

A friend's dad used to work at the Ford research plant at Dunton in Essex. His friend was head of a department and got a skyline "on appraisal" (to go and thrash and see what's worth nicking basically). He took my friend for a test "flight", they screeched to halt in front of me 10 minutes later, my friend falls out dizzy and your man looks at a 16 year old me and says "hop in, your turn"......... Needless to say I'm a complete petrol head ever since.
He was a bona fide race driver too, I'm still crapping myself all these years later.

Fun fact. During the 1990 Bathurst 100, the Nissan team did indeed have 4wd issues as mentioned in the video. They also had a test or "T" car on hand all weekend that was used in practice. So in order to fix the 4wd problems, they swapped all the body panels over to the T car. The TV network guys were especially annoyed since the Racecam onboard camera install had to be moved across too.

IMO the car was the pinnacle of Group A design, as the class(as I remember) gave stairs of tire width per displacement of the engine, with a penalty given for turbo use. And the philosophy of R32 was like(if I'm correct):
    1. R31 was bumped into a higher class with 10-inch tires by the turbo penalty
    2. To better use the given traction, an AWD system was designed
    3. AWD made the car too heavy to be competitive, so the engine was enlarged to increase the power
    4. The enlarged engine bumped the car into an even higher class with 11-inch tires, an entire step of jump from before
To me, it was like the rocket equation of the relationship between payload and thrust: To increase payload, more thrust is needed. More thrust equals more fuel use so a bigger fuel tank is needed. A bigger fuel tank means an even higher payload so more thrust is added. The ongoing chase leads to an overgrown monster that leaps and jumps over anything before it. The creation of Godzilla was inevitable under the ruleset.

The Mitsubishi 3000GT VR4 also featured 4 wheel steering but it came out later in the year 1990. Japan during the 80s seemed to fully believe that 4 wheel steering or rear wheel steering was the future yet so many people ended up removing those systems from their cars to improve handling (or to go drifting).

4 wheel steering is something that have made a comeback in recent decade so i guess it is the future after all, Japanese was just too far ahead of the time. Back in the day I owned an R32 Skyline GTS-25. Fantastic drivers car which felt absolutely glued to the road. That is until a friend of mine let me drive his R32 GT-R. Compared to it, my car felt like it could fly off the road at any given moment. Love the R32. To me it looks timeless. Like, if that car came out today and no one had seen it before, I think it would still wow people with how modern it looks.
Funny story regarding Gibson Motorsport that may be apocryphal. Back in the day when they were still running turbo Bluebirds (or they may have just switched to the first Skylines they ran), they tried to sign John Bowe, because their two current drivers (Mark Skaife and Glenn Seton) we're getting the results that Fred Gisbon wanted. So Bowe turns up to drive their car at a test, goes out and his times are just terrible. A couple seconds per lap slower than Skaife and Seton. So he comes back into the pits and basically tells Gibson "That car is undrivable. Your drivers must be supremely talented to get the times they are. You should pay them more."
Aiden, if you're reading this Glenn Seton would be an excellent addendum to your Unlucky Drivers list. Seton went on to drive Fords, but I don't know a single Holden fan that wouldn't have gladly given up a Holden Bathurst win to see him win it. Excellent driver. Won a couple touring car championships but never conquered Bathurst.
And if you're wondering, I was a GT-R and then Holden fan back in the day.

A brilliant car that is actually fondly remembered by most Aussie race fans. I watched that Bathurst race live and, well Jim Richards was right.
I personally think that the Sierra's and the Skyline were a bit before their time. There is still a lot of love for V8's here, but for roughly a couple of generations the average race fan and streetcar enthusiasts are a lot more open to different ways of going fast and making power happen.

It's a damn shame that all entrants to V8 Supercars that have tried to compete in the two car GM and Ford show have been basically brushed aside and never could get proper footing as the third manufacturer. Nissan, Volvo, and Mercedes-Benz all tried and all ended up bowing out for some reason or another. Now Ford is stumping to drag someone into the series or they may bow out by the end of next season. It kind of draws a bit of a parallel to Honda in IndyCar atm, as they have been willing to help along a new manufacturer to ease the burden of engines it needs to supply only now weighing considerations to leave by 2026 if something isn't done about the costs. And in both cases, the one that seems to be holding both Ford Australia and HPD in America back is GM. Great video as always Aidan.

Gibson Motorsport did such an outstanding job that NISMO knocked back their request to race in the Fuji 500, citing their cars as simply being too fast.

From memory they were invited to race at Macou and one of the other teams racing a GT-R wrote their one off and instead off trying to buy one of Nissan, they went straight to Gibson and offered i think a million for one of their cars, Been a while since i read it but there's a great issue of Motor celebrating 30 years of the R32 in Australia with a ton of behind the scenes infor from Gibson and Skaife on the ATCC cars as well as a deep dive on JUN II amongst other things

due to the japanese gentleman's agreement. Which was broken at every turn, The GT-R was marked at 276bhp. As was the limit of horsepower the japanese companies agreed at. so that they wouldn't get into an extreme spending spree of competing. As well as easier for customers to insure.
Now these cars did not make 276bhp and made much more . When purchased at a nissan dealership they'd slip you a pamphlet on how to pop a seal that would generate much more horsepower. The speedos were also much under the limit. Only being at 180 KPH or 111 MPH. These cars made much more speed then 180 KPH. (also why you'll be difficult to find an R32 with a stock speedo and not a nismo or Mine's aftermarket speedo).
There's a lot of other wacky info of this time, but the 90s was a very interesting time for these sports cars.

thank you for the great vid, aidan! I have a video-idea that might be interresting: I stumbled over 1984, Laudas last title-winning season where he beat Prost by half a point. Curiously Lauda was usually seconds away from Prost in Qualifying and I was really wondering how he managed that.

Lauda always set his car up for race pace whereas Prost (back then) used to set up his car for qualifying. So Prost used to have blistering one lap pace and therefore qualified higher whereas Lauda was slower but more consistent. Lauda also relied on his extensive experience on all of the tracks he raced on to pick his overtaking moments perfectly and he never fully went flat-out balls-out fast unless it was absolutely necessary. Lauda's clinical driving style (and Didier Pironi's career ending crash at the 1982 German Grand Prix where he crashed into the back of Prost's Renault) led to Prost to change his driving style and he became "The Professor" and ultimately became one of the most successful drivers in the history of the sport.

The 2wd was so predictable in a drift (better than my rx-8 or m3) and an absolute sleeper for daily driving (looks like an accord). The gtr was a monster, purely stock, handles better and is way more fun to drive than my current carrera 4. The thought of getting ahold of a gtr that wasn't burdened with safety/environmental restrictions and having some open road/track to run it on is right up there in appeal with a Dormer/Johansson threesome.

Despite a huge mistake in qualifying putting Gordon in the rear of the field, he proceeded to tear his way through the pack and took home a win in such convincing fashion that NASCAR banned it immediately. Wearing a bright red paint job to promote the movie "The Lost World: Jurassic Park", it quickly earned the nickname if T-Rex.

In 1988 Audi entered a pair of 200 Quattros, run by Group 44, in the SCCA's Trans-Am series. The cars were hit with weight penalties during the season to slow them down, but they'd managed to dominate the early season so badly they were champions by the end. For 1989 Trans-AM banned four wheel drive and any non-domestic engines. Audi moved to IMSA's GTO division, where it dominated until outsmarting themselves with development parts that blew engines, giving the championship to Ford. After that, Audi concentrated on European racing

If you're talking about Brad Sherriffs car I see it's being enshrined in the museum. It certainly caused some controversy, but not because it wasn't a Holden or a Ford. Brad got into hot water with officials because Mount Panorama has a 300kmh speed restriction (imposed by the FIA) and he was regularly (and willfully) exceeding it by quite a lot down Conrod Straight. They were willing to let that slide because it was a short race and a great spectacle for the crowd but when the TV coverage showed slow motion pictures of the car lifting the rear wheel under braking into the Chase at well over 300kmh they deemed it unsafe (which it was really, that was a big crash waiting to happen). As it tuned out it didn't matter because the car went into the wall at Sulman shortly after and was out of the race.
It was blindingly fast in a straight line but was pretty unstable across the top due to not having much aero and being essentially a road car chassis with lots of flex, it was interesting to see it drive away from the MARC Mustang on the straights and then the Mustang would take absolute chunks out of its lead across the top and be on the bumper by Forrest Elbow. It was a great contrast between a very souped up road car vs a purpose built race car. Most of the front half of the field were Sports Sedans, all capable of exceeding the max speed allowed (but didn't, because they knew it would mean being DQ'd), but Mr Sherriff flouted that rule and consequently got into strife.
