      and the GTR caught it up after being left in the slow pack behind. Thats the memory that lives on.
      Its hard to imagine how the Seirra driver and the GTR driver were in a league above the slower competitors of this series such that they'd lap the last place drivers.

    • @Anax100
      @Anax100 4 роки тому +2

      @Honda Fag The Sierras were carrying lead ballast at this point in time to try and handicap them and make the v8s competitive. It wasn't enough to stop them winning but it made them more dangerous to drive. I don't think the Nissan had ballast as the skylines had always been so-so competitors in previous versions so they got a pass. The 1990 GTR shocked a lot of people, especially those used to seeing the earlier models fight for a placing.

    • @brantleyfoster021

      @@Anax100
      LOL, it just went straight to the lead & opened the gap up by over 1/2 a minute within the first few laps.
      No one had seen a car do this before in Australia.
      It's mainly because of the GTR's advanced AWD system, the Australian racing teams managed to get it generating far more lateral G's than the rest of the world.
      It had far superior control as a result.
      The RB motors have a very broad power band with the twin turbo setup.
      Even with all the penalties in 1992, it still generated 600hp due to some clever tuning.

    And then the rule makers got salty and slugged the GT-R's with stacks of weight.
    By this time though, Group A was on its way out due to escalating costs and lack of manufacturer involvement; bogans were crying, upset that a 6 cylinder turbocharged Japanese rocket was beating their heroes (never mind that the Gibson GT-R's were developed to an inch of their lives and were the fastest of their kind on the planet), the Brits were moving to the Super Touring era and touring car racing was going into somewhat of a dark age.
    I was a diehard Holden fan but I was always partial to the GT-R. It led me to the Japanese JGTC series which became Super GT. The racing there is awesome.

    I think from my memory I saw a black Sierra with mag wheels at Bathurst once but oh so long ago. The 90s it must have been. Up until now. The only Ford Sierra I have actually seen with my own eyes. Apart obviously from the ones racing out here back in the day. Popular in England and Europe. Fast. So they thought why not race them here too ?

      Yeah haha 😂, though it's a comfortable thought that Moffat turned a RX7 into a track monster. Such a blessing to see the old timers with the slick skills to handle those cars ☺️

    I forgot about this period in Bathurst history. Sierra v Skyline. Where are the commodores. A mate of mine owns a Tommy Kiara GTR 32 inspired and personally engineered Monster. He won't let me try her at Willowbank

    No Izep, the GTR was designed and built to compete in Group A,the sedan and coupe variants came after.
