@@BiglumpADV I like to use my main beam as much as possible of course but having a pile of extra visibilty, as Andy just demonstrated, whilst on your low beam is a grea result. In many areas, not just cities, it is very hard to get to use your main beam for any decent amount of time.
@@terenceokeeffesmotorcyclestuff agreed, but dazzling other road users isn’t the answer either. As Andy said there is legality issues with those lights, so I wouldn’t be running them all the time either.
@@BiglumpADV Know what you are saying. If you get auxilliary lights they are legal (in places, I'm sure regs are different all over) as long as they don't dazzle other traffic. They do tend to have a wider spread than fogs though which does defeat the purpose a little.
Thanks Marcus. Absolutely yes. I just decided to go straight to the battery for the sake of (mostly) showing how a 'normal' installation would have gone.
Haha! That’ll do it! The shame is that otherwise i love the bike! I might consider one day swapping out the whole headlight unit. Gets expensive quickly though.
Some difference is an uderstatement. I had the same issue on my Caponord. Dipped lights were ok but main beam was horrible. Fitted spots on to it and the light from in now is awesome.. I actually exclaimed out loud "F'ing hell" when you turned them on. They are awesome. Are they not 'auxiliary' lights? getting around the fog light legislation?
I know right! I was just as stunned! I’m not entirely sure about the auxiliary/foglight thing. I may have to press SW-Motech for more info. Though they are sold specifically as ‚fog lights‘. TBH the fine in Germany for incorrect use is 35€. Vs riding into a tree that you didn’t see!! 😂
@@AndyManCam Yes but who should fine you for having Fog Beams on at Nighttime. As long as you don't distract the other road users with that bright light. Nobody will blame you. I see a lot of BMWs an Audis an so on who drive with they're Foglights on. Looks cool I guess. -Guy from Germany
Impressive. You should try a Honda Blackbird to sample a truly dismal headlight, must be a Honda thing. Nice to see you continuing the theme of only riding when it’s raining.
Definitely a Honda thing, my 2017 Crossrunner has "state of the art high intensity LED lighting", yeah what a joke, the beam pattern makes riding on unlit roads dangerous.
So disappointing. You would think that these things could ONLY get better! But no, the bean counters are always there to suppress the enjoyment in favor of the budget! It should be illegal to put these lights on big road going machines. There’s a max brightness allowed for bikes, so why not a minimum safe brightness!!?
That wattage of the stock headlight? TBH i will be mentioning it at the next service, because i find it hard to believe that the headlight in a modern bike can be SO bad. Not sure about the auxiliaries. I’m sure there are options out there, though i think that on motorbikes at least, the technicalities of the laws still somewhat restrict their use.
@andymancam i see that you are in Germany. I have one question , in Germany you have to use winter tires how is the situation with using your motorcycle in the winter? As far as I know there are no motorcycle tires with a snowflake rating.
Oddly enough, there are no rules, as far as I know, regarding motorcycle tyres in Winter. I think the fact that generally Motorcycle tyres are softer and more grippy than car tyres certainly plays a part. I'm not sure if perhaps that would be different in the event of an accident.
Two-wheeled vehicles are exempt, but you're not allowed to drive around for fun, and if you must use the vehicle, there is a 50 kph speed limit. (See motorcycles.news/neuregelung-winterreifenpflicht-20172018-in-deutschland-gesetzesaenderungen/ )

I'd go for additional ordinary lighting rather than fog lights. SW Motech do seem to produce well made and well thought out products. I think fog lights in anything other than fog are too bright for other road users, especially in rain which refracts the light in all directions. 🤷
With old fog lights, i would agree. But these have a very tight beam and with them also being mounted very low, i don’t imagine them being any more dazzling than the plonkers out there with illegal HID bulbs! Strange that SW only have these or Spots. I think they’re assuming that folks will just use these as additional low beams. They’re covered legally, so users can do what they want and accept the consequences.
I like your stuff. Great vids and a great amount of humor 👍🏻 If you driving near Plauen/vogtland, it would be a pleasure for me to show you the best curvy streets here and Erzgebirge/Tschechien. Cheers and stay healthy 😎👍🏻
They're pretty bad on my CBR500R as well. Biggest problem for me is the high-beam is way too narrow, so you can't signal other vehicles unless they're directly ahead of you, and you can't see into corners at all.
It’s a real shame that Honda have just opted for style and low cost instead of actually putting a useable light on these allegedly premium bikes. I’m very disappointed with their attitude!
@@AndyManCam Yeah it's strange from them. I do like how visible the bike is to oncoming vehicles (except the high beam) with the amber lights always on, and that it's all LED. But not being able to see at all into corners is brutal and they're a bit dim. Figure I should look into additional lights... I've already put a 46L top box on a "sport" bike so aesthetics are already gone anyways!
Haha! Do it then! Stick yourself a nice big LED bar for offroading on the front! But yeah, it's disgusting that apparently headlights are seen as a non essential item. Doesn't matter whether or not people can see, as long as the can sync their phone with the bike! :O
Thats absolutely fantastic the difference of light. I can't believe Honda actually let those bikes out of the factory with those standard headlights, shameful.
Andy I own a 2019 z1000sx. A great tourer and very comfortable with bags of power. However I have always loved the CB1000r. I’m seriously thinking about trading in my sx to get one. But my biggest worry is how the CB would be for touring especially on the motorway. So I’m watching all your touring vids to get an idea of how it is with wind, and luggage etc. I would love to hear your opinion on it. Would you have chosen a different bike knowing what you know now ?Is it worth all the adaptions you have made for touring etc? Cheers mate. 🏍
On the motorway, it's not so amazing. No great surprise there though as it has almost zero wind protection. But for me it's still perfect as I try not to spend tpp long on the motorway anyway! I've been really impressed with the Luggage from SW-Motech and the comfort overall (off the motorway) is no problem (now that I've changed the bars). I would 100% still buy the same bike again. I might try and haggle something off the price for that rubbish headlight though!!
They are impressive fog lights. Still cannot believe how bad that CB1000's headlight is though, especially for a factory LED unit. I'm glad my CBF1000F's headlight is brilliant, it's as good as my cars. Although that does mean on any ride out I'm put at the front to lead the way 🤣
Very much agree with you there John. It's a travesty that they've done this to me! Possible that something is wrong with it, but I doubt that very much. Maybe I should swing by the Honda dealer.

Ah i see! Oddly they changed the shock from red to Black in the newer 2020 color scheme. No idea why, because red looks much better. But no, sadly it’s the same rubbish stock shock. Maybe I’ll Manage to change it next year.
I tend to think of the “rule” situation like this, if you can get away with it in Germany then it will probably be ok in most other countries. As the British comedian Al Murray said “ You’ve got to have rules or where would you be? FRANCE!.... & if you had too many rules where you you be? GERMANY!”😁👍🏻
Yep the stock headlight is proper.........Do they look good on the bike, hmmmmm dunno but I'd have them because they enable you to see at night. WINNER!!
I can't believe Honda let the bike go to market with shit like that on it. It's the kind of thing that knackers a brand's reputation.... Those SW Motech lights on the other hand are bloody brilliant!
Sadly it won’t damage their reputation. It really ought to, but oddly enough none of the large magazine or media reviews ever mention this kind of MASSIVE flaw.
I put them on as I was due to go to the Isle of Man this year and which involved some night riding obviously that was cancelled due to some selfish prick of a virus!!!! Hopefully 2021 they’ll get used, it’s odd though I’m alway back well before darkness on that bike yet on the other which has crap headlights (triumph) I always get caught out 😂😂
I recently bought a XADV and the lights are pretty much horrible.... I do think that Honda does that on purpose, just to sell the acessory fog lights after; I am in the market for a similar purchase;
I don’t understand why massive companies keep putting awful lights on these bikes! It’s not like the tech is now so expensive and complicated that it’s infeasible! There really is no excuse any more!
Massive difference. Shame all bikes don't come with similar lights. It's even worse this time of year, as the crap off the road covers the lights aswell.
I had rather expected that the brand new modern tech in the factory headlight would be that good. Sadly i expected too much. Thank goodness for SW-Motech!!
The lights are fantastic! ...When he starts talking about rules and regulations in EU regarding the use of fog lights, I am so glad to have emigrated out of EU. They really don't have any other problems over there, but to decide if they can take some ransom over a set of lights mounted on a motorcycle. Absolute power corrupts absolutely. People: WAKE UP!
Tis true sadly. I don’t understand how there are so many rules about foglights, but not a basic MINIMUM of brightness for the OEM headlights! I’ve had too many bikes with terrible lights. Years ago, technology was the limiting factor, now they’re just skimping.
@@AndyManCam do you think it's possible to mount these in a way that if you do go down they won't get crushed? I have the same bike, going to do about 20% on gravel roads I have the crash bars, I just don't want to sacrifice the fog lights unnecessarily...
You say SW motech aren’t paying you for the review but they are . They are paying you 292.44 euro to review the fog lights . I’m sure I would like everything they made if I was given it for free. You can’t give an un-biased review on a product unless you have paid for it yourself. The few sw motech bits of kit I own are very good, but they were pre owned because brand new they are ridiculously expensive.
Its quite difficult to review a product without having it, and if I had to pay full price for everything on the channel there simply wouldn’t be any reviews! Don‘t worry, i have to pay 16% VAT and 20% income tax out of my own pocket and then dedicate at least 3 days to making the video. No idea what I’m going to do with the equivalent 60€ a day that SW-Motech are ‚paying‘ me (that i can’t spend). Drugs or hookers is always such a tough choice... Maybe I’ll just stick to making honest reviews of the stuff.
@@AndyManCam I think your missing the point . You have basically said if they didn’t give it to you couldnt afford it ? It’s a great bit of kit but it is too expensive for you to purchase. No denying the motech stuff is well built gear but is it worth the crazy high price tag ? No chance . You can’t review stuff unless you have it , true . You start giving bad reviews on stuff you receive for free , saying they are over priced for example, these companies stop giving you free stuff , no reviews and less content for your channel. This is why you can’t give an honest review. Nearly all the motovloggers are guilty of it . MCN are the same , they rarely slate a bike because they know if they do they won’t get invited to the canaries for a jolly to review the next one .
If i don’t like a product, i say so. The difference is that i don’t tend to accept products that i don’t like. They just get sent back. I don’t appreciate the questioning of my integrity. I don’t care if i upset any brands or manufacturers. If the products are good, they get a place. I care that viewers to my channel can trust it.

Nothing a bit of paint or plastidip can't fix! Sure you could get some cheap Chinese LED lights, but over the years of buying and using gear on bikes in all weather I’ve Learned that if you buy cheap, you inevitably end up buying twice. 7:46 clearly you still don't see anything inside of the corner no matter how bright the lights are... I wish adaptive cornering lights were just as easily available.
That is true. I’ve seen a bunch of replacement LED main headlights from JW Speaker and Highsider that have cornering lights built in. Might be an option for an all in one upgrade in the future. Though it would bring with it mounting problems for the dash, as that is screwed directly to the headlight housing. 🤨. www.polo-motorrad.com/de-de/jwspeaker-led-scheinwerfereinsatz-5.75--8690a2-mit-kurvenlicht-60291200070.html?awc=11475_1607254851_ee2dcfcc625802ebaae10617b7bf6915
Hope it helps, they are really impressive Andy!
Certainly seems like they will! Cheers David!
They look really good, I'd be tempted to wire them into the main beam switch so they're only on when you have a clear road ahead.
You would hardly ever get to use them in that case which kind of defeats the purpose of having them.
@@terenceokeeffesmotorcyclestuff really? Use my main beam all the time.... that’s why there’s a handlebar switch, so they can go on/off as needed
Nice video Andy, could you have put the pos and neg to the T/box rather than the battery?
Thanks Marcus. Absolutely yes. I just decided to go straight to the battery for the sake of (mostly) showing how a 'normal' installation would have gone.
I had exactly same problem last year on honda vfr800 bright on front wheel then darkness the a line of light again I sorted it sold bike😂
Pity we need to do this on new bikes...Surely this has to be a safety issue or do they think we dont ride in the dark???
I totally agree Mick. There is an upper limit to how much light the headlight can throw out, but why isn't there a lower limit, for safety's sake?!
Enlightening. I would be interested about how many drivers flash you when there on.
Badoom-tish! So far none, thankfully. Obviously i tend to turn them off unless really necessary.
Impressive. You should try a Honda Blackbird to sample a truly dismal headlight, must be a Honda thing. Nice to see you continuing the theme of only riding when it’s raining.
Ha! I was hoping that Honda quality would stretch to the headlight. Seems they don't care that much about it though!
Hi Andy. Can't one buy normal auxillaries, and maybe just check the LED headlight wattage. Happy riding. EBC
@@AndyManCam After a bit of research, it's the lumens produced by the bulb , maybe not enougn on low beam or could be the reflector design.
Or both. Tbh the whole unit isn’t very bright at all. Disgusting show from Honda.

A night and day difference, almost! 😉
That’s a fantastic mod shame on you Honda I have crash bars on my Honda adventure bikes, have had the bikes for 12 months and shamefully have never rode in the dark! I promise I give it a go and confirm if my led headlights are as bad as the litre bike you have very good video you are very funny. Malcolm and Diana from oz
Totally agree Malcolm. I have to admit that I too had my bike for a good 4 months before I really rode it in the dark!!
hi are these the fog light model or the headlight model? Thank!
Hi Marco. The main clue is in the title dear fellow. Fog lights 👍🏻
Mate genuinely awesome how great they are. Same the switch is not even dimly back-lit for finding switch. What was causing heated grip cut out?
Dimly lit would be a real plus. Strange that they didn’t think of that. Then again, the normal buttons arent lit either. No idea with the grips, but they packed up completely after this. Currently waiting on replacements. I bet they’ll arrive just as it Starts to get warm again! 😂
@@AndyManCam Aye that would be typical.
The light when on does seem a bit over kill mind you.
I notice you had 3 cables, so still had to plug into battery... Bit of a pain in that respect given you have Thunderbox installed to avoid a tower of terminal connections.
I guess ultimately i could have just plugged the power cable into the thunderbox too. I just thought that going straight to the battery was a bit of belt and braces. 😬
@@AndyManCam Ah OK, wasn't sure if it was necessity to plug straight to battery too due to power demands. Can you tell I'm excited about seeing if Santa delivers a Thunderbox in a couple of weeks. 😂
Are these the fog lights or the high beam version?
Fog lights 👍🏻
Impressive, the lights are perfect for night rides
Absolutely. The difference is day and night! Pardon the pun.
They sure do light up the road
Big time! Exactly what I needed!
These look very good. I have read on some forums that the lenses can fog up or water can get in are you finding any of those problems?
Nice one Andy, I have a 2015 Tiger 800 which has a handlebar fog light/heated grip switch. The fog light loom is currently just "hanging around" waiting for Triumph fog lights to be attached. Presumably I can just adapt the end plug on my switch and connect to the SW Motech loom, can you foresee any issue with that ? (NB. I also have the Healtech Thunderbox - which is a brilliant device - and bought it following your review of it) Thank you for all the great content you put out.
Cheers Mark! I can’t imagine there’d be any problem with that. I have a similar Connector on the CB1000R, but used the Thunderbox out of laziness!!
Thank you for posting. Well, now that the amenities are done, I just have one thing to say. Your username is driving me nuts. There I said it. Each time I see it, it reminds me of Sammy Davis Jr's song title "The Candy Man Can". Which means, each time I see your username, the song pops into my head (not my favorite song by a long shot) and won't go away. Wow! Thats super catchy! I’ll get right on with the changover!
So, It wasn't just a mater of adjustment of the headlight?
No. No matter where it was adjusted, it was still utterly crap!
The Tiger 800 has TWIN LED HEADLIGHTS as standard - and they are good 😂.
Colour me jealous!
WOW!! That's very impressive. Expensive, though, but probably worth it, as your headlight is abysmal.
Definitely. The difference is astonishing. Shame on you Honda!
@@AndyManCam Fair enough. 👍
Hi Andy, they don't half make the differents to the standard head light . Honda really need to do some thing about the head light they put on

Are these legal in the UK? Cheers
Yes they are. Fully E-marked. But they‘re officially foglights, so their useage comes with some caveats.

My CB500X has LED low and high beam, and, yep, they're shite! Will be getting some of these now...
It's disgusting that Honda have done this to so many of their models! Darkness isn'T a new concept!! :D

@@AndyManCam you mentioned that the original wasn't great. And I was doubting it was red from factory. I was wrong

Totally true. Sadly it seems we can’t really get away with anything here! 🤣
Yep the stock headlight is proper.........Do they look good on the bike, hmmmmm dunno but I'd have them because they enable you to see at night. WINNER!!
Yeah, it's a bit of a catch 22. Not the most stylish for this machine, but then what price for being able to see!

@@AndyManCam knowing the Germans, you would probably be fined for the state of the light emitted by the headlight in the dark! Does that make sense?!

Ho ho ho! I guess it kind of happens when their biggest customers are the GS crowd!
I recently bought a XADV and the lights are pretty much horrible....
I do think that Honda does that on purpose, just to sell the acessory fog lights after;
I am in the market for a similar purchase;
This is the way !!!

No idea! It is pretty bright! But then I’ve always found the main beam indicator too bright for riding in the dark too.
Nothing a bit of paint or plastidip can't fix! Well, except that on my bikes there probably isn't anywhere to mount them :/
Edit: actually thinking hat on - I could probably find a way to mount them in place of the indicators and then get mirrors with intergrated indicators instead. Do they even come with a mount that allows for that?
