Oh I thought you were going to disagree with his take and say it wasn't a good movie. I think the chi was beautiful but the story was super generic and predictable. Like oh my there's a big ass red demon dragon (bad guy) fighting a big ass blue water dragon (good guy), who will possibly win?? Only redeeming parts were the martial arts. I thought the fight between shang chi and his dad was good but I wasn't emotionally invested in the father character (who I knew was going to be killed by his son shang chi, because it pretty much does everything but tell u how it ends) so I didn't really care if he died or not. I wish they all would've died besides shang chi. Then that would've subverted my expectations. But no, all the main characters live besides the dad who was evil during the larger half of the movie. @@francisabellana445 yeah cause it wasn't predictable at all that shang chi would end up with the ten rings and using them against his father.. what was the title again 🤔?
Shang-chi’s sister was such a bad ass character and I’m disappointed she was just kind of treated as a foil at best. The end does probably sneak in that she might be important in future stories so hopefully we get something that shows her as a main character.
Same I liked her, but I'm confused about the after credit scene like is she going to be a bad guy now and take over her dad or is she just taking it over and use it for good?
I get the impression that she’s going to end up being the “Mandarin” character for the MCU going forward, since she’s taking over the ‘family business’
I think because the American girl is more important that his sister. To an extent. Her sister is now a bigger overlord so she will have a role, but Shang Chi lives in America and his family is still the American Girl. So yeah, they needed them both to be on equal standards

They should get this fight choreographer if they ever do any Avatar: The Last Airbender live-action fight scenes. The way they clearly integrated certain styles of martial arts into the Ta Loa fight style reminds me a lot of how the animators for ATLA did the same. One person even basically does airbending

I would like to just remind you that this movie had an extremely low budget in contrast to other MCU movies, and despite this, it’s still incredible! Happy to see asian representation done right :D
The story is still told completely through the martial arts, which I really, really appreciated. Shang-Chi uses his mother's techniques, not to overpower, but to calm his father. He masters the Ten Rings. Wenwu recognizes this. And Shang-Chi uses BOTH his father and mother's techniques to kill a whole-ass Kaiju. It was the most glorious and heartwarming spectacle the MCU has ever made. XD
This is probably my fav mcu movie just because of the martial arts id give like a 89% because after the first half it does drag a bit before the ending
Tony Leung is one of the greatest actor in Hong Kong. He acted in "Infernal Affairs" which is a Hong Kong Masterpiece. The movie "Departed" which was directed by Martin Scorsese is entirely based on "Infernal Affairs". I'm really glad that Charlie enjoyed Tony Leung as a villain. It puts a smile on my face.
Tony Leung is one of the greatest actors PERIOD. On the level of all the greats of the West if not better. The way he acts just with his eyes ... wow. Plus he is really, really hot! :D
I definitely see what Charlie was saying about the Martial Arts taking a back seat in the latter half to focus on the more magical elements, but I did appreciate that they took at least somewhat of an ATLA-esque approach and made the more CGI-heavy magic fighting still contain elements of the Martial Arts, like you can still see the relation between the martial arts forms they use and the bigger moves.
Yeah I agree, there were times when they were basically airbending and it looked great with the choreography. Even the combat with the actual rings was cool from that standpoint because it looked like martial arts mastery was a prerequisite to using them.
@@macosauruscheese8766 When watching the people from Ta Lo fight like Shang-Chi's mother and aunt, I also thought it looked a lot like airbending. The choreography for this movie in general is really good. Even in the final scenes where the action gets a bit weaker it's still leagues ahead of some other fights in the MCU. In particular, I really enjoyed the final fight between Shang and his father, particularly when they each have five rings. Something about that choreography in particular got me going.
It's great choreography, flat out, but it's also unique. that's what got me. whatever fight choreography have you ever seen that uses ten floating rings? the fact that they had to basically develop a unique fight scene for unusual weapons was a big reason it got me going
Tony Leung is a fantastic actor. If you want to see more of him, you should watch some of Wong Kar-Wai's masterpieces he's in, like Chungking Express, In the Mood for Love and 2046.
Tony Leung's Wenwu was what stood out the most to me in the movie, his character was incredible and he gave me the same type of vibes as Michael B. Jordan's Killmonger.
@@TheHonoredMadman Bro same, Killmonger is way overhyped, he clearly caused a lot of harm and not at one point was i rooting for him. Wenwu on the other hand, had me doubting if his wife really was trapped because of how strongly he believed in it
This really felt like a chinese film with western influences and it shows. And having to remind yourself that "wait, this is an MCU movie" is a good thing and shows how much of a breath of fresh air it is, compared from the usual MCU experience. They really outdid themselves with this movie.
I actually loved it, the reason I loved it so much is because of the physical and melee fights which I love in movies, btw I liked aquafinas performance in this, I liked that she wasen't a push over to the audience and be annoying.
Tony Leung is in many of the classics of Hong Kong cinema (In the Mood for Love, Chungking Express, Infernal Affairs the movie that The Departed is a remake of, etc) Great actor.
Shang-Chi’s sister Xialing I felt that it was kind of the point that people overlook her. Her dad did, Shang-Chi did, even their aunt overlooked her. Which gives way to her wanting to build her own empire and then taking over the 10 rings organization and Wuwen’s connections. So when Shang-Chi returns she’ll be at the forefront and people will no longer overlook her
"Cgi fest" it's literally so dumb when people say this shit. It's a fucking soul eating dragon vs a water dragon. Please tell me any other way to make that. You want them to go get real dragons???
Agree 100% I think, they made it on purpose that each relevant character has its moments. Its not a movie ONLY bout Shang Chi. He is not a 1 man army. They treated the characters with respect, not just as "movie plot objects". Yes, Shang Chi's spotlight might got taken away a bit, in his own movie. But i'm sure his character development in the future will be a joy to watch.
You should check out "The Farewell". It's an A24 movie starring Awkwafina as the lead. It's super heartfelt and shows what Awkwafina is really capable of as an actress. Not at all her typical comic relief style.
This is the magic of Shang Chi. People either really fucking loved it. Or they had a good time and liked it. This is why it has a 98% on RT with 5K+++ reviews.
Actually an incredible movie. The humor was competent, the choreography was a marvel, and the characters were interesting and feel compelling to become invested in.
They knew what they were doing when they had the cast doing the majority of their own fight scenes. Shang Chi has the best fight choreography in the entire MCU, even better than Winter Soldier.
The sister has one of the most crucial roles. In a movie about finding the balance between light/yang and dark/yin within Shangchi. His sister represents the light, the legacy of their mother, who she still can feel connected to. She represents the opposite of Wenwu’s yin/darkness/shadow. White is the color of the dragon and her armor from Ta Lo. In stark contrast to the black outfit worn by Wenwu. The connection to her mother is established when you find out that the father didn’t want anything to do with his daughter because she reminded him too much of her mother. Another reason: the dragon is female; yin yang also represent the masculine/feminine dynamic.
don't overthink things. she is just a "strong/badass female representation" character to appeal to the feminists. nothing too special about her character

Daniel Destin Creston honestly outdone himself with his first big blockbuster like film and especially within the MCU to help really kick off Phase 4. The effort done visually and physically even outta the stunt work and choreography of the fight sequences toped every MCU film by a mile and the cast ensured by their charisma and likable sense to help carry the story well. Obviously there's a ERJB in the end and a full CG final act, but but overall it's a solid origin film that keeps it unique in its own way even if it keeps the same MCU formula. Honestly a dope film
idk the fights between father and son, and nephew and aunt were really good martial arts wise. Magic or not, the movements of the Ta Lo citizens are actual arts. the rings can be replaced with various weapons and the choreography would still match. I would say it transitions from hand to hand martial arts to weapon martial arts.
The hand to hand combat was easily the best part of the movie. I also don't think theres anything wrong with "cartoonishly evil villains" they can be good, but they have to be done right.

Man, I feel curious about how Trevor's voice is in English, because I watched this movie in the cinema dubbed to my native language (Spanish), and I felt lie I was missing something important with Trevor's voice and accent because I can imagine him having a hilarious British accent which would've made his jokes 5 times funnier than just having a generic old man voice in Spanish. 1. Shang-Chi's sister saved Katie's life when she was going to fall to her death 2. She's the reason they were able to escape the prison they were put in. 3. During the dragon scene she used her rope dart (that's what it's called) to take out the monsters that were clawing at the dragons eyes, she's the reason it was able to shake them off and continue fighting. So I mean....she had a few more moments than Katie, most definitely
The reason the bus scene stood out in particular was because not only could you see everything due to it being in the day time, but there were so few cuts. The choreography was really able to shine
Haven't watched the movie yet. But I've been having a good feeling about this one ever since the first trailer. And now seeing all the feedback it's getting I am very excited to see the movie. I hope it will blow my mind!

Shang chi felt exactly the same like Aquaman to me. Protag comes from far away land and gets taught stuff about it while young, then proceeds to live life in the normal world till they're grown up. They then have to go back to the mystical land they came from and fight someone who wants to take over in a war. They eventually get a strong weapon that gives em the advantage in the battle and there's a giant tentacle monster. Still enjoyed it tho and the soundtrack was fire

Especially with movies that are so bad they don't exist like The Last Airbender or DBE. I'm glad you enjoyed this movie and it makes me want to see it even more.

Spoilers. Shang-Chi's dad was basically just "Dad gets telephone scammed by a demon." But yeah, there should've been more fighting in it. I was actually hoping we'd get to see more of Shang-Chi fighting in the club, cause we knew he was going up against his sister anyways, but the bit following that was alright, and Wong's random appearance was pretty fun. That said, the ten rings as a superpower, and the way the animators are playing around with them, so fucking sick. Like, the super-jump and then landing by shooting a couple at the ground to slow the fall, or when he's trying to break down the gate and he takes them all and puts them on one hand to give him a stronger punch, that was really cool logic, I'm so glad they're keeping them for future movies.

i kinda disagree with with charlie, i think the cgi at the end of the movie was some of the dopest shit to come out of marvel in a fat minute. When he used all 10 rings to kill the dragon, HOLY SHIT that was awesome.
Was kinda in the middle, the Ta Lo scene doesn't look natural for me, but those damn cgi slaps, the ten rings glowing inside soulsuckysuckymonsterthing is the most badass vfx ever
And when like he stole the rings from wen wu then uses it against him that was dope
When I killed the dragon with the rings both me and my mom was like “holy shit”
Same copy paste bullshit. Boring. 50% on my moister peter
