'Shang-Chi' Director Breaks Down the Bus Fight Scene | Vanity Fair - Фільми й анімація
Destin: "Yes, the entire reason I pitched Shang-Chi was to destroy scooters."
and high-end BMWs
Indeed.
I wonder what his thoughts were on South Park's episode "The Scoots."
Destin's low energy is oddly, high energy.
Indeed, and i think it's because his passion for the film comes through.
It's grandmaster energy.
He really said the most hilarious things in the flattest voice, love that for him!
Low energy but high vibration
@@mitchell9169 His frequency is indeed mighty high.
The bus fight scene truly is the best beginning of a refreshing action sequence.
Indeed.
💯 it definitely was the best fight shot
Jackie Chan influence for sure since the choreographer is part of Jackie's team.
ummmm, no it was not. it was very cringey with the humor, copy and paste of better fighting scenes, and predictable.
@@kevina3673 so you’re saying you knew that he was gonna swing out of the bus using a mirror and then kick his way back in through a window. Cause I don’t think you did. It’s okay to make homages to other fights. It’s not like it’s punch for punch the exact same thing
That whole scene is really one of the best action sequences in the whole of MCU history. Most relatable moment is that woman screaming "NO!" when Shang-Chi grabs her laptop to defend himself and it gets sliced in half... I felt her pain...
And this is why you always should have backups of your data.
@@petraw9792 is a hard drive the best way to go?
ik i literally had my jaw drop in theater when it happened and my friend started laughing at me... i'm an author if someone sliced my laptop that'd be the end of me
And it’s not like the laptop did anything to stop that knife. Completely unnecessary, considering everything that knife already sliced through, but still good for a few laughs.
What's funny about that particular laptop is the hard drive is on the side of it so her files are safe :D
Notice that Destin was putting some emphasis on Shang-Chi's jacket being reversible? When he and Katy went to Macau, I didn't realize he was wearing the same jacket he wore on the bus, only it was reversed showing the Yellow/Blue inlay. I think Destin was pointing this out to show that the jacket somehow represented Shaun's secret identity being hidden all this time. But when the bus fight scene happened, Shang-Chi's true self was coming out, and his jacket was also showing its reverse side when he used it to fend off the goons. And after he revealed and confessed to Katy who he really was on the plane, Shang-Chi started wearing the jacket's reverse side. If this was what Destin was trying to convey, that's a really cool touch that I never realized while watching the movie.
Or maybe Shaun just hadn't had enough money to buy another jacket so he went for a reversible one, so . . . . (surge)
I saw this movie like 5 times, and I never caught this detail ! It flew by so fast !
Everytime I was like, "hey, this blue jacket is exactly the same as his first red jacket, just in different colors", but only in this breakdown do I see it actually revealed it in fact WAS the same, now.
Mindblown !
And your interpretation of it !!?
Double mindblown !!!
Holy moly. Nice catch.
Nice one, hadn't thought about that actually
“It’s metaphorical!”
-Taserface
that’s a really good catch!
I love how he gives credit to everyone involved, be it the entire stunt team or the people playing the extras on the bus :)
Class act 🤩👍
but he doesn't name any of them.....
@@tubulartuber Except he literally does name a number of people.
Dude gives props to virtually every one including the extras. I think if this breakdown was 3 minutes longer, he would have been thanking their food and beverage department. Respect.
I love Destin isn't acting like a Hollywood big shot. Dude still carries his indie roots and credits a number of people in various shots.
This and skyscraper construction fight, seriously impressive
Scaffolding in Macau, China
Too bad it becomes another CGI show in the end.
@@heisenbergbad5375 yea that almost killed the film for me, I think alotta people when they jump into that dimension. Cgi, jokes all of it fall in quality. Back in the real world, that bar scene it snaps right back to good
@@WaffleCone927 I'm totally lost by now, every third act action scenes needs to be nothing but CGI, it's the same thing everytime even if the CGI is quality.
@@heisenbergbad5375 It took a drop in quality, after seeing it a second time it was a little better. I think the Aunt explaining their world should have been cut. Throws any flow off
Destin trying so hard not to call the blade hand stand in a didlo is great.
😂
I want to comment that the music in this scene is absolutely the perfect match for it. The second Simu takes that first punch in the 120fps and the low modulated bass enters in the bg really made that moment pop even more. It's minimal and effective. Love it! favorite scene in the movie
this movie had an excellent soundtrack, it really elevated an already great movie
I wish they would release the film version of it
@@runthejudes And it the audio was tuned exquisitely for IMAX. Shang-Chi is the movie against which I compare the IMAX audio quality of all other films. It was *chef's kiss*
That low modulated bass when he first punch the guy is so cool to hear on repeat. It's like your about to witness the most badass scene of a movie you're currently watching.
The music ramps it all up. It's part of why I love this scene so much. 10/10.
Every fight scene in this movie was a choreographic masterpiece. Loved every second.
I agree
The MCU needs to this exactly, instead of just quick cuts and shaky cameras
@@saramartinez5872 imagine just one continuous shot of fighting
@@Us3r739 dude that would so cool. I like a continuous shot if it serves a purpose in a fight scene.
@@Us3r739 watch Daredevil, theres one long continuous foght scene in season 3
The idea of a "family drama wrapped in a Kung Fu movie" is what interested me in the film. It came through in the marketing as well. Just overall an excellent job and the first memorable viewer experience I've had in some time.
The bus scene will become an iconic action movie scene. Made me miss 90s action movies.
Love 90s film
He seems SO chill.. the contrast between that and the amazing kinetic action he directed is amusing and very cool as well.
I wish I could see Destin break down the entire movie like this.
Or they could also make a commentary of the whole movie with Dustin, Simu, and one of the other cast members available in Bluray.
Shang-Chi is noticeably (and easily) the Marvel movie with the most committed and passionate set of professionals ever. The way the whole team worked tirelessly to make sure everything would be perfectly in sync and that every take would be carefully planned and thought out and perfectly executed is just so refreshing. We love to see it ♥️
And they did all of this while in the midst of a pandemic. That's dedication!
Lol you people are drinking the kool aid way too much. You mistake your joy of finally being able to go back to theaters after COVID with the objective quality of the movie.
“When I initially pitched this to Marvel. it was just a lot of what if scenarios.”
Ultron: *[heavy breathing]*
😂😂😂😂😂😂
I just realized that Shang-Chi was wearing the same jacket later on in the movie but it was just reversible as explained @4:30
The way I see it, it can also be interpreted as him having two sides that is finally revealed in this scene. Much respect to the attention to details in this movie.
Or maybe that a lot of Asians do wear reversible jackets and this makes it more relatable to them.
@@MrPhilbautista maybe both!
My #1 gripe with Marvel movies is the copy and paste action sequences. This film really shines because none of the fight scene are remotely forgettable.
Oh man, watching the MCU films in bunches really highlight this. Everything feels quite samey, not just the techniques but the overal rhythm of the action can feel quite "MCU".
This broke it up and had the old school, 80s HK rhythm.
I like it. It was like a fusion of Jackie Chan and Jet Li. The jacket was totally Jackie Chan but the physical crispness of the movement was all Jet Li.
Jet Li never had that unique style that makes him different. I get it. Dude was handsome and can fight, but nothing so special like Jackie Chan or Donnie Yen. I think Jet Li style is like hard hit to the weak spot, ruthless and no mercy. Which is why you only see Jet Li in crime action gangster movie like Danny The Dog or Cradle 2 The Grave.
It everything is Jackie Chan, Bruce li, jet li etc. the only one that gets the actual nod here is Jackie Chan for his distinct prop usage which Destin actually points out in the video
@@waterunderthebridge2291 Watch Jet Li in Once Upon a Time in China, where he portrayed legendary hero Huang Feihong. That's his most distinct style he's known for in the non western movie world.
@@waterunderthebridge2291 you haven't watched enough Jet Li films if you don't think he has a distinct style
“Hey, you’re that martial arts guy on UA-cam right?”
“Call me Shang Chi!”
“Ok Shang Chi, do a flip!”
YEAH!!!
I know that reference
same actor too!
I just wanna see how far down Destins shirt goes.
I'm more curious whether he is wearing pants or not
LMAO
Plot twist, it’s a night gown
Destin, You have money now...buy a shirt that fits!
It's shirt all the way down.
It’s amazing how two minutes of a scene can be shot in different places and put together like it was shot in the same place. Amazing 🤩
Ikr! Do you know why they shot some in Sydney? I was wondering while watching the video
@@tessajericho I believe most of the film was shot in Sydney due to the use of all the nature shots in Ta Lo. Since the cast and crew was in Sydney, guess it made more sense to ship two busses to Sydney to the sound stages then to fly out cast and crew to the US. Part of it in the later stages could also be due to COVID-19 as well.
Definitely a Marvel thing more than any other studio.
The bus fight scene was sooooooo freaking brilliant!!! I wish Destin continued explaining the rest of the scene, how they made the continuous shoot of Shang-Chi beating and throwing the three goons out of the bus, and how they shot the bus splitting in half when Katy made the sharp turn. Shang-Chi and Katy are a really great team! These two are virtually joined at the hip. (Even though Shaun was lying to her about who he really was for ten years). I hope we can see more of their teamwork and friendship dynamic in the next Shang-Chi movie.
I wish Destin could also explain the Macau Scaffolding Fight Scene!
Katy instinctually steering the bus to the left and it helping Shang chi get to the top is such a subtle, yet masterful piece of choreography. I didn't even put that together when i watched.
I appreciate that Destin gives credit where credit is due to the team.
really cool film. didn't know the director is such a cool guy himself. Hats off to you, Destin. great choice in casting Yuen Wah and Tony Leung. HK screen legends. Mahalo.
Tony Leung was the most remarkable actor of the bunch by far to me. He really had an awesome presence and pulled both faces, the head of the rings and the father, off really well.
Never knew this Destin guy before Shang-Chi but now he's definitely on my list of top directors. He REALLY blew far beyond average MCU expectations.
Please Marvel Studios, give us more of this, and less of the obnoxious quick cut, shaky cam close up style of editing that literally no one likes. I begeth of thee
That's bc Simu was doing lots of stunts himself. I loved his dedication! Makes an action scene so much interesting when it's not cut and edited every few seconds as you said.
Exactly. The fight scenes were soooo good
black widow had 100 cuts pers fight sequence, this was so refreshing
Yeah, this and Black Widow are in theaters simultaneously where I am right now and seeing BW's fights after these was really disappointing.
The only shaky cam in all of the Marvel movies is in the fight between Bucky and Cap in TWS. It's only there to make it look like they're moving really fast.
There are other scenes may have quick edits and/or use hand-held cameras but those aren't shaky cam. Feige hates it and doesn't allow it.
I can't wait for the Corridor Crew to eventually cover this & the bamboo scaffolding/Death Dealer scene. I also love that (I think) Simu Liu did the majority of his stunts.
Two of the action designers for the film(Chris Cowan and Yung Lee) were on the Corridor couch this week so it depends on when it gets edited for the show.
They have now!
An incredible scene that raised the bar for future films.
This man is a quiet emperor a ruler with such grace and honors everyone he works with
We need him in Hollywood!!!
now make a breakdown for the bamboo forest fight scene between ying li and wenwu!! my eyes were glued to the screen the entire time :D
The way Destin talks about the crew is v humble and heartwarming, what a film and what a scene he has brought us
I love breakdown and analysis videos like these😭😭like ugh we could really stay here and breakdown a scene for hours bruv I love that stuff
Honestly I'd watch them break down the whole movie in this detail 😂
Watch HBO shows.. they have breakdowns like these... at the end.. mostly
he's a great director, shang chi was incredible
I’m so glad he directed this film! He is an incredible filmmaker and, as expected, he completely knocked it out of the park with Shang-Chi. And yup, this bus scene is electrifying 👊
The way he talks sound very soothing.
He didn't talk about the part when Shang-Chi got back in the bus after Katy opened the door for him and he kicked all the bad guys out of the bus while it was going through the tunnel. I get chills every time Shaun gets into position to fight off all the bad guys. The whole bus scene is amazing.
This scene and the fight between Shang Chi's parents are hands down the best choreographed and visually stunning
what I love about marvel films are, they're consistent either about where the prop take place, or like the surrounding that matched inside and outside the bus. I hope Destin keep working on Shang-chi because if it's another director it would lose the uniqueness which made Shang-Chi different with another Marvel film
best fight scene in the entire mcu imo
When is "Shang Chi but it's just my voice" dropping?
When is shang chi but its your voice coming
Ikr, I thought Winter Soldier was on top of my list for the best MCU action scene then Shang Chi just came and grab that spot
Not really imo
It's shorter, but the Cap elevator fight is a beauty.
"You got this, bro!"
"My bad."
4:31 That REVERSIBLE JACKET is the most DOPE, i watched the movie like 3 times and only notic Shang Chi wear the same design jacket in the bus fight scene and when he visit his sister, thought that was 2 different jacket tho... small details that's hard to notice are so beautiful!
We've got lots of movies featuring great martial artist choreographing fight scenes only to be muddled by choppy quick cuts. Snake Eyes, had Iko Iwais yet so many cuts
It takes Marvel to trust the choreographers/actors and stay with the fight scene. The fight is rrallt awesome and reminisce of old cantonese kung fu movies. I wish other movies would do this
Katy: “Does he look like he can fight?”
Shang-Chi: Wow, what are you trying to say?
That dialogue is cringey.
This scene solidified that the action in the movie would be a breath of fresh air and it absolutely was. Much-needed dynamics added to a franchise with action that often feels cut-and-paste.
If you put it at 1.25x playback speed, he sounds like a normal paced person
You guys should watch Destin's other movies - Short Term 12 and Just Mercy. Absolute masterpieces. Glad he's getting more attention.
Just mercy is amazing
Both r great movies. So is Shang-Chi.
Lol at the director's hatred for them electric scooters
Lmao yesss I just wanna know why he hates them so much
@@tessajericho they're there for people to rent and get around town but the thing is, people don't put them to the side. They just leave them in the middle of sidewalks and walkways. They've become such a dangerous hazard
@@ouranhshc100 ooohhh I see ty for explaining I am now fully on board with the scooter destroying lol
Always great to learn about how these epic scenes were filmed. The bus fight is definitely a main highlight of the film. I love how Destin gives credit where it's due
This bus scene will be forever iconic in the MCU just like the famous Airport fight in Civil War... or Hulk vs Iron Man in Age of Ultron... one of those action scenes that really sticks.
this fight scene is one of the most badass ones ive seen in a LONG time
they really killed it with the music choice, too
4:43 Now I know why I loved this fight scenes so much. They reminded me of Jackie Chan and I love his movies.
That fight with the jacket, my brain automatically says that JACKIE CHAN vibes there right there!
This whole movie was so well done, but this scene in particular was one of the best Marvel scenes of all time! Amazing job to everyone that worked on it!
I want to hug him. This movie is immaculate.
Destin really made the movie worth it. Less Talk, More Action. Reminds me of 80's/90's hk,chinese action movies. Totally loving it.

One of the best movies of this year! Cheers to you, and everyone else that helped create this masterpiece. Bring on the sequel! 👊
Did not expect an action sequence like this to draw me into the movie like this one did.
Such a pleasure to see the director explaining this!! Excellent movie man!!!! Thank you for bringing one of my favorite superheros to life 🙏🏽🙌💪
Destin Daniel Cretton is truly an amazing director blessed with a lot of vision...
This scene was truly amazing, but the fight on the scaffolding really gave me goosebumps. I couldn’t imagine being KT in that moment holding on for dear life while people are tumbling all around me and I’m the only one without that incredible fighting skill. Like a kitten in a tree.
why i can't stop watching this movie. The fight scenes all throughout just unbelievable.
That is definitely one of the best scenes in any marvel film
Let me take a moment to say, please watch Short Term 12 (2013), written & directed by this brilliant man.
Masterpiece of a film
Just Mercy (2020) as well
I have seen both Short Term 12 and Just Mercy before Shang-Chi. I loved all three movies.
One of the best marvel origin story to ever be made. Keep it up Mr. Cretton :)
He did such a great job! He made this movie his own.
i love how this guy is shouting out his team so much
As a non-fan of origin movie, I gotta say that this is one of the best and entertaining origin movie that I can follow. As the story progress, it doesn't really feel like a typical MCU movie which is very refreshing after the MCU burnout.
I thought he was going to write “Reveal” but then he wrote “Reversible”
Plot twist
This movie was SO good! Thank you for everyone who were part of making it happen!
I had goosebumps watching this in the theater. Truly amazing
As someone who loves my bomber jackets, that fight part using the jacket was bloody awesome. I mean, the whole scene is brilliant of course, but just wasn’t expecting him to use it in the fight. Great movie! So proud of everyone involved in making this a Marvel masterpiece.
Destin: "We wanted to convey how Shang-Chi and Katie were instinctively a team that worked perfectly in synch..."
One second later: Shang-Chi slams into the doors Katie didn't open
This guy is absolutely brilliant!! This scene is one of the best scenes in any super-hero movie ever.. It's like Speed meets Spiderman 2 train sequence..but better
Growing up in San Francisco, the Muni scene brought back high school times. 👏
every element in this scene is so important and amazing. props to the entire crew who were a part of this incredible movie 🙌🏽
Really hoping Marvel is already working on a Shang-Chi trilogy with Destin as director🤞
Legends. This whole scene is amazing. The soundtrack top notch. Everything. Iconic.
4:07 is it just me or do their grunts match the beat of the soundtrack
It does, that’s editing for you
You're so right it makes it all flow so we'll I love the soundtrack in this scene
That reminded me of Edgar Wright there. His editing style is all about syncing action with the beats of the score.
Watching the video on 1.25x makes it sound like he's speaking at normal speed 😂 (much much love and respect to the man, the crew, and the cast)
I would literally watch something like this as a legitimate show. It's fascinating the minute details that are created for frames. Our brain's pick these changes up and emotions fire first as you get to stay in the movie universe.
So freaking stoked for Destin! Chee! I’m amazed at his directorial skills and excited to see what he comes out with in the future.
Thank you for talking us through all that. Very inspiring as a film maker to watch you explain so thoroughly. Seeing how the basics of storytelling like character beats, story arc and expectation subversion can have a place even in a gigantic complicated blockbuster.
Seriously one of the best fight scenes I've ever seen. Well done everybody!
the bus scene really set the action for the movie and i was really all eyes on shang chi :” props to destin as a director
Man is there a cliff notes version of this long video? Much RESPECTS to All involved indeed!
Short Term 12, Destin's first feature, is one of my favourite films. I was so happy when he got this big Marvel movie.
Kudos to the entire team of Shang-Chi for giving us this incredible film.
Destin looks like a younger Asian Samuel L Jackson.
This scene was SO AMAZING! Everything! Choreography, story development....As a muso, the music was SOOOO AMAZING!
Amazing how the chillest, monotone, expression-void director got some exhilarating performances... for some of the movie.
This man is also gonna direct the upcoming Wonder Man project! and it’s also official that he’s gonna direct Avengers: Kang Dynasty!! IM HYPED!
I love the moment when Shang-Chi first punch the guy in slo-mo and the soundtrack is a low bass. So cool.
Thank you for perfectly explain all this
I really appreciate the driector's notes, wow. What a beautiful soul, thank you~
17:00 Wow, it didn't even register in my mind that Katy manoeuvred the bus to help out Shang-Chi and that she does it instinctually. It's seriously cool that she does it instinctually, but I'm wondering if it would have been more obvious and/or better if it cut to her seeing Shang-Chi hanging out of the window in the side mirror and then thinking and realising for a second if she swerved the bus it would help him out, so they're sort of working like a tag team.
I watched this scene many times and I NEVER realized that Katy swerved the bus to help out Shang-Chi either. I thought it was coincidental - that she did it to avoid a collision and Shang-Chi took advantage of the move. I agree with you. I think it would have been better to show her realising how she could be of help because as it is, it seems that she magically knows that her turning the bus like that would help.
@@Sylphadora yeah exactly, I thought she was trying to avoid a crash too when I saw it initially and that it was just luck that it helped Shang-Chi get on the roof of the bus.
