It kicks the originals ass, from the characters, story, acting, even music to some degree. The few bad things are Leto and the fucking posters that look like i've made them in 2-3 min.'s.
i really like Chauncey. he never fails to add a very nuanced and respectable opinion on the art of the narrative. his perspective is unique considering he’s dead, and thats the type of diversity that i believe is sorely lacking in film criticism these days.
He’s better than the New York Times critic in the Birdman movie. Waaaaay better. He’s a caricature of the method and once again tries to pinch the movie. My small favourite slice of acting was gosling’s police lieutenant (robin wright She was marvellous. )
Brandon Keller i can't really blame them, 3-hour-long slow-paced scifi noir is not for everyone. The original also flopped in box office, but at least this one got critically acclaimed from the get go. At least, with this flopping, we won't get an unnecessary sequel, (a problem with the movie I had was the fact that some subplots kind of ended abruptly and seemed like it wanted to be explored in a sequel)
Primo yeah. I realize it's a hard sell, but I still think it deserved a lot better. It's what happens to niche films, I guess. Shit, I wish you hadn't put that thought of Dune not happening in my head.
The 80's was the best for dystopian tech noirs. Blade Runner, Terminator, Robo Cop, Road Warrior, et al all reflected the fatigue of the Cold War and economic recession, the the unease brought about by the expansion of automation and computers, and a general fear of the future in a rapidly changing world. But to me, nothing came close to the feeling that Blade Runner managed to impress upon my psyche. Blade Runner created a world of sight and sound that was so visceral that you could smell, taste, and feel too. It's such a rare work of art.
Another well thought review Paul, glad to see you dedicating yourself to this channel. It's a shame this film is failing in the box office as everyone that has seen it seems to love it. The only thing I can think to blame for its failure to reach its box office goals is a shoddy almost non existent ad campaign for its release.
Fostersause Ferdinand Excellent point. I don't watch a lot of TV, so maybe my opinion is shit, but even aside from television, the campaign for this film is seemingly non-existent.
I think part of the reason for the trouble is the movie viewing audience is having some serious fucking sequel fatigue. And a sequel to fucking Blade Runner? That just sounds dangerous. Maybe things will pick up now that reviews are saying that it's actually good.
TheGreatYukon Good points. That said, how many people of the younger/millennial generation actually even know what the original Blade Runner is/was, or had seen it? Probably not many. I mentioned my excitement for the sequel, and most of my younger friends (I'm 30, and really, even many people my age have/had no idea what the original is) had no idea that there was an original. It's a cult classic, legendary among sci-fi lovers, and I think (?) it did okay in its original run at the box office, but it's not like we're talking Star Wars. Imo it's one of the greatest films of all time, but that's a cult opinion, and a movie critic opinion, more than a globally recognized opinion. At any rate, great pfp. That's one of my favorite Earth albums (perhaps their best).
Guess I just thought it was better known. Also, yes, this album is killer. It's the first Earth album I ever listened to because that album art just grabbed me. It's so intricate and beautiful. Nice to see another fellow Earth fan, I run into more of those than I thought I would.
TheGreatYukon Same here, it was my first Earth album, and both the title and the album art drew me in as well. It took a while for me to love it tbh, but it really grew on me. I think all of their music has to grow on the listener. It's the kind of music that continues to reveal itself over many listens. It's fantastic for road trips/driving btw, if you've never listened to it on travels. Cheers ✌🏼
I thought Leto was fine. The film overall is amazing. It’s a shame so many people aren’t turning out for it at the theaters. Great review Paul, keep up the good work! (And maybe put a good word in with TJ to get DP on track again)
I didn't see Wallace as a "mustache twirling evil baddy" he's a megalomaniac and creepy as hell for sure but not evil for the sake of evil. "every great civilization has been built on the back of a disposable workforce" and also "seven planets we've colonized, our planets should number in the millions!"(or sumthing to that effect, i've only seen this film twice so far) his character has a "greater good" motive, all for the betterment of mankind. This film is the best film of at least the last two decades! Can't wait for it to come on blueray so I can watch it as many times as the original.
No being old and stale will be the end of dp trying to revitalize something like dp is a good idea they all gotta get tired doing it all the time it gives them a chance to recharge before the next episode
That scene at the beginning where K goes to arrest Bautista's replicant character. In the cinema K's sidearm sounded fucking amazing when he executed the replicant. It sounded really powerful. A really compressed yet solid "THUD!" that you could feel like slap against your chest. Awesome film. A worthy sequel.
There's a lot of hidden gems in the abyss, kinda like unknown bands that are more talented than famous ones. I've had my channel up for 8 months or so. I put hours topped on hours day in day out into my reviews to make sure they're of good quality and all I've got is a measly 81 subs. I'd love to review films for a living, but that dream is looking less possible each day.
He needs to do more new movies if he wants to get more attention. No body's youtube searching Clown reviews. He needs to be more relevant if he wants the channel to grow.
Great, well-spoken review, and I agree one-hundred percent. The film is sublime. Some people have complained about its running time, but I could have kept watching it for the rest of the afternoon. I didn’t want to leave its world. I agree that Leto was the only weak-link, but just like you said, he only has about ten minutes of screen time. His dialogue was over-written and too grandiose. I’m actually surprised that Villeneuve didn’t direct Leto to be more subtle, as Villeneuve has always been mostly subtle with performances in his films. I can’t wait to see it again Tuesday night.
This movie is soooooo fuckiiiiiiing gooooooood! I did not think this would be the case but it's actually a worthy sequel to the original. I'm so fucking happy that this is actually the case.
So I should watch it? Ok it’s a long one to commit to and I just didn’t want to be disappointed... I love your channel and binge watched tons of your vids this past weekend. Keep up the awesome reviews!
I know Leto's pushing 50, but he looks barely over 30, I can't take him seriously as some mega magnate. I heard David Bowie was originally cast to play Wallace, see now THAT would've worked great!
Dude...SPOT ON with this review. Even with the Leto annoyance and the very minor missteps elsewhere, this film is a full fledged fucking masterpiece and my jaw was hanging open through half the IMAX showing I went to. Luv was the best villain of the year, the visuals and world building rivaled the original, and the film itself is easily the best of the year. New subscriber here.
Wow, I feel like the only guy in the room who thought this movie was over the top at times. I didn't hate this movie but those fight sequences were just silly to me. I loved the slow first half but the second part just fell to piece for me too.
I'm sure I'm not the first person to mention this but you and kerik from ACG gaming look and dress almost exactly alike. Nice review. Enjoyed the video. Keep up the awesome work.
I had to watch several of your videos to realize you weren't TJ. And the fact that you're not him was the main reason I liked, subbed and continued to watch. Also, your content it pretty good. Mainly cause you just talk about cinema which is quite a concept (crazy right?) In a UA-cam world where every semi-intelligent person feels a sense of duty to tell me their innermost thoughts and feelings about God, the universe, politics, their sexuality, what drugs they or do not use, and a whole host of other perspectives, which have nothing to do with the stated purpose of the channel, and frankly, I couldn't care any less about, it's refreshing to find someone actually keeping the subject matter on track and not treating the audience like this is some kind of free therapy session where I'm supposed to give a damn about all your personal shortcomings in life, of which I'm sure there are many. So, thanks for keeping it real dude. Chauncey is 100 times less irritating than TJ. I'd keep him cause it's working.
As someone who has never seen the original Blade Runner, I came into this movie with no sentimental attachment. This movie blew me away, easily one of my top three for the year. It's not often a long movie like that can keep me entertained, but I can't wait to watch this through again. Bluray purchase for sure.
I wasn't very excited about seeing this movie, because I thought I would hate it, but I saw it right when it was released anyway and it became my favorite movie in years; so many years I can't even count them. I can't recall a movie that outdoes this one.
I completely understand that sense of apprehensive dread before it started....Such a wonderful relief that they honoured the legacy of the original and managed to add to the legend. I don't think Leto is as bad as suggested though. This is a truly modern sci-fi classic.
Well... I'm going to watch it now. I've never actually seen the original Blade Runner, so I had no particular incentive to see the new one. Based on your review, I'll definitely give a watch, and I'll make sure to watch the original as well. Great review, as always!
I just went and saw it yesterday and it did not disappoint! It actually FAR surpassed my expectations. Like, I never buy blurays, but when this comes out, I'm picking up a copy of it. As well as the final cut for the first one.
I didn't mind Jared Leto in this....a bit over the top for sure but I thought Wallace added a bit of dimension.......good review bud....subscribed.....
Brilliant review , will definitely go and see the movie this week. Prefer your reviews without the sunglasses, easier to see passion for your subject when I can see your eyes.
I like all aspects of your review but you left out something kind of important: the plot. What did Paul think about the plot? Was it gripping? Did it force you to rethink about your own presuppositions about a human/Android coexistence? Did you leave feeling different about anything? You poured into your own psyche on the mother! review. And the clover field Lane review left me with little doubt about your feelings on the character arcs. But this left me feeling unfulfilled in terms of dialogue/plot/Paul's baseline feelings. I enjoy your reviews. This was just my thought on this particular review.
I feel like, if you're going to go watch a Blade Runner movie, those elements should be discovered by watching it. But, I see where you're coming from.
Excellent review. Couldn't agree more. The only other film to portray a dystopian future so ominous and beautiful is Akira IMO. Blade Runner and 2049 as well as the accompanying anime shorts have such beautiful design behind them and Akira is honestly the only other thing I can compare it to. Even though the stories are vastly different the setting is similar.
First time for me that I delayed watching reviews because I wanted to see the movie first without having it spoiled and it paid off. I'm not much of a cinephile, but I really love this one. I think this is the first time in my life that I would have an answer to the question what my favorite movie is. That is really weird to me. This is embarrassing, but I had this weird "hobby" of cutting especially cool and beautiful scenes out of movies and collecting them so I could from time to time watch them without having to watch the whole movie. It started out when I was a teen who was into Martial Arts a lot and I would cut and collect the best fight scenes from Jackie Chan movies and stuff like that. The point of me boring any potential reader of my comment with that is to say that in this movie, I would have no idea what to cut out and keep, because it is so beautiful and satisfying to look at from beginning to end. The only scene I didn't like as much was the 3-way, to be honest. That seemed a bit cheesy and... well... very "French", like something Luc Besson would put into a movie. Besides, "Her" already did that, just without the holographic element to it. I think if this movie would have to be trimmed, the hologram subplot would be the one thing it could lose without losing too much. It doesn't really explore the subject matter much anyways and if it would, it would probably feel a bit derivative after "Her" anyways. even if it came to a different conclusion, which it did, I think. At leas I interpret that scene on the bridge, when he is confronted with the giant advertisement version of his love, in a way that he realizes it was just an illusion and she was just a piece of software, designed to make him feel what he felt, that he loved a non-sentient thing and that the realization that he never really had a life anyways is what gives him the final impulse to sacrifice himself, or at least to join the rebellion.
I've watched it 7 times now, Leto's role may not be perfect, but when he talks while in his cool water room, it reminds me of how a priest sounds in a large church while speaking to the mass. The echo to his voice is creepy awesome. Love your reviews by the way, i'd like to hear you make fun of Last Jedi lol!
I really cannot put into words how worried I was about them just completely f****** up one of my favorite movies as a child but aftwr the opening scene with Dave Bautista...I was fucling blown away and I knew I was in for a fantastic film! Cheers to Gosling too! I never really cared for hom until this movie
You know what I like about Blade Runner's Dystopia? I like how the big oppressive entity in charge doesn't have Big Brother levels of intel. I like how if you want to find someone in Blade Runner, you actually have to go out of your way to search them. It's not too difficult to disappear. I never once had the "How are they able to go outside with the Wallace Corporation on their tail" because besides sending someone to sniff them out, they can disappear without a trace.
Sit in a movie theater for 3 hours? Are you out of your Vulcan mind? Maybe if they give me my own personal pause button. But that's not going to happen, now is it?
I love how the twist is heavily foreshadowed very early on. They say that two children were born on that day with the same DNA. A boy who got lost in the orphanage program (K) and a girl who supposedly died of a autoimmune disease (Dackard's daughter).
James Bond villain and sidekick... The one thing I miss from the first movie is LA, in the original, the city is the main character for me, and it's so empty without it in this film.
So glad I saw this movie on the largest screen I could find ... and I even liked the 3D effects. Otherwise, yeah... great flick ... but then again, that's what I expected from Denis Villeneuve after Arrival. Too bad it didn't find a larger audience. Just like Dredd, here's one rare re-make/-boot/late sequel/whatever that would've deserved success and a sequel of its own.
For me I was likewise pleasantly surprised by this film. While I do not share the disdain for Leto's performance, I would like to suggest it was a near perfect bookend to the original. Also, as a fan of the cyberpunk sub-genre, I felt this film was like watching a William Gibson Sprawl novel come to life.
Definitely on the top 3 comeback/remake films I have seen. Dredd is another, and there are of course many others, like the italian job, king kong, gone in 60 seconds and the departed. A lot of my favorite films are remakes from either before, or just around the time I was born, so naturally I missed the originals when they were big, and seeing the remakes have made me watch the originals, letting me discover lost gems, so it`s a win-win really :) Apart from all the crap that is :p
Wow, one of the very few things I didn't like about this movie was the... BAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH, then a couple seconds later... BAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH! Love Hans Zimmer, but what the fuck. BAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH! You got goosebumps? Well, I guess everyones got their cup of tea.
For some reason, I didn't think of Jared Leto's character as a "bad guy" I guess I thought of him more of a materialization of a force or something. I don't know, I suck at finding the milk when it's in front of everything.
David Bowie was originally intended for Wallace, but sadly he passed away. Jared Leto pissed me off with his tainted Joker that I can't stand watching him in anything else these days.
SEE THIS IN IMAX. HONESTLY. IT'S LIKE YOU'RE REALLY THERE.
Ashley's Ego Cheers man, will do
I saw it in Imax. I was so impressed. Best movie I've seen in forever.
Ashley's Ego I saw it twice in imax. It was that incredible. I'll always regret not going more than that. A true instant masterpiece.
Skullknight _ Hey is a little too dead pan for me but I see what your saying.
"too dead pan"?? You bigot! #deadlivesmatter
Hes still a white male :(
Yeah, I see why you'd say that.
He’s better than the New York Times critic in the Birdman movie. Waaaaay better.
And sad to say I’m one of the idiots who prefers the voiceover version with all its clunky exposition and unintentionally comedic moments.
Loved it and always will.
2049’s Leto is awful. Awful. He’s a caricature of the method and once again tries to pinch the movie. My small favourite slice of acting was gosling’s police lieutenant (robin wright
She was marvellous. )
I don't remember ever feeling so tiny watching a movie. The atmosphere is just so involving and gigantic.
Fucking amazing.
VK Produções wouldve like d the premise of replicants fighting replicanta
Lol he thinks love is a better character than Wallace
Love that Dr. Robotnik has find a new job review movies.
Damn. That is too true.
OH MY GOD I CAN'T UNSEE IT
this movie was INSANELY good
A triumph from David Villain-newwaver.
XDDD Denis
The only reason to be cynical with this movie is that it's doing shit in the box office.
I think the audiences are why Hollywood sucks
Brandon Keller i can't really blame them, 3-hour-long slow-paced scifi noir is not for everyone. The original also flopped in box office, but at least this one got critically acclaimed from the get go.
At least, with this flopping, we won't get an unnecessary sequel, (a problem with the movie I had was the fact that some subplots kind of ended abruptly and seemed like it wanted to be explored in a sequel)
Brandon Keller though I suppose this flopping may also affect Villeneuve's Dune, which I'm hoping he still makes.
Primo yeah. I realize it's a hard sell, but I still think it deserved a lot better. It's what happens to niche films, I guess. Shit, I wish you hadn't put that thought of Dune not happening in my head.
The general public dont like to have to think when they go to the cinema, it is why movies like this do poorly and movies like transformers do well.
Hollywood sucks because they have no originality
Finally a positive look at Bladerunner 2049’s brilliance!!! Awesome video man !!
The 80's was the best for dystopian tech noirs. Science Fiction is the most unAmerican of all genres, not surprisingly it is helmed by foreigners!

Nice review. Enjoyed the video. Keep up the awesome work.
I am crying with joy. Thank you for this review. Shame I'm going to miss it on the big screen.
Your "The magic is back baby." at 1:00 was Danny DeVito nailed.
It’s so dense, every single frame has so much going on
Fuck you, Rick Berman. You ruined this, too? Stop ruining... Wait a minute. That ain't Rick Berman.
“Tickleing peoples’ nostalgia nipples”!! Likely the best line ever uttered by any film critic.. brilliant!!
I'm so glad I had the chance to see it in theaters. A masterpiece. Thank you Denis Villeneuve.
Completely agree about jared Leto. Very uninteresting
I wept... this was like a religious experience for me. I am a HUGE, HUGE fan of Blade Runner and the sequel blew me away!!

The way you pronounced Denis Villenueve - a severely french name - as a latino name was pretty funny.
Another great review. I do think if you like a film this much you should show the director the respect he deserves and get his name correct.
Watch it, interlinked. Watch it, interlinked. Watch it, interlinked.
You hit the nail on the head with this one my guy
I never wanted to watch this movie just because I told myself, how could it be any good? But your review has added this to my list. Thanks!
Why do you hate Leto so much? I thought his performance fit the movie perfectly.
@Luka Hays Lol ok geek
That opening joke..... killed me HA. yeah... I'll go kms now
I'm glad to hear your insight on this. Personally I loved this movie!!! I completely agree with your high and low points of the film.
hey tj, love you guys. great video
Now this was a great and accurate review. I don't think Leto was nearly as annoying as some would say.
I can’t believe he brought in Rachael the replicant for commentary
Saw it on a rainy night. Absolutely perfect.
Look everyone it’s this movie you loved ..again..the magic is back baby !!!
Fantastic movie, love yout channel man, greetings from Sweden!
Paul...not that you need my validation...but this video made me subscribe to your channel. Just wanted to say that. 👍
Paul love the new set, hope the move is treating you well.
i can not believe i missed this movie in the theaters. seen it twice on small screen.
“Hello this is Karick from ACG...” lol
Saw it five times by now. Best movie of the decade.
Gorgeous film. The sound track blew me away in the cinema.
Very much so
Your spanglish pronounciation of Denis' french name was on point.
On that note, did his ancestor start a town, or something?
Sit in a movie theater for 3 hours? Are you out of your Vulcan mind? Maybe if they give me my own personal pause button. But that's not going to happen, now is it?
I love how the twist is heavily foreshadowed very early on. They say that two children were born on that day with the same DNA. A boy who got lost in the orphanage program (K) and a girl who supposedly died of a autoimmune disease (Dackard's daughter).
James Bond villain and sidekick...
The one thing I miss from the first movie is LA, in the original, the city is the main character for me, and it's so empty without it in this film.
I saw it in theaters and got goosebumps as well in some of those awesome epic scenes.
Blade Runner 2049 is one of the best sequels ever made. Up there with Aliens , Mad Max: Fury Road, and Terminator 2.
You are my favorite new film critic.
That beard lookin good Paul! Stay Salty.
Leto always just channels himself in the roles he picks.
Love was actually terrifying. Such a good movie
Hey, Paul, do a review on "V/H/S" It's another one of those horror anthology movies, give it a shot!
Definitely on the top 3 comeback/remake films I have seen.
Dredd is another, and there are of course many others, like the italian job, king kong, gone in 60 seconds and the departed.
A lot of my favorite films are remakes from either before, or just around the time I was born, so naturally I missed the originals when they were big, and seeing the remakes have made me watch the originals, letting me discover lost gems, so it`s a win-win really :)
Apart from all the crap that is :p
good review... one little nitpick though, i'm pretty sure the director's name is french(-canadian?) and not spanish 😂😂
Its a shame it did not make splash in the box office. But I fucking loved it. Leto was cool too.
Jared Leto pissed me off with his tainted Joker that I can't stand watching him in anything else these days.
agreed, was a great film, i felt a strong sense of tragedy during the scenes when Joy and K interacted.
This video still hasn't shown up in my subscription feed. Thanks UA-cam!
Imo, one of the few sequels in recent memory that has actually surpassed the original. Easily one of the best movies of the 2010s
You kidding me? OG BR is a masterpiece. A classic that stands the test of time. 2049 is a mediocre movie - already forgotten.
Spot on! I am ever so excited to see what the director will do with Dune.
Is Rachel even mentioned at all in anyway in the film? Is there any Sean Young at all?
Nastassia As long Darth Vader isn't the father...lol
I think Joi being named Joi was not a coincidence haha
How can a machine be a slave? WTF Great now I feel like I'm exploiting my Microwave.
