Came across this after hearing about that second-biggest diamond they just found a few weeks ago, great documentary with lots of context that I didn't have before. Many thanks DW!
This is simply a well-crafted, informative and highly professional documentary. It covers the historical arc of discovery, mining, production, cutting and social impact of diamonds. And of course there is no shortage of mystique. Congratulations to Ms Helmstaedt and her team for an engaging and informative production.
Amazing Documentary for professionals like me and even for the Gems & Jewellery Entrants Enthusiasts!! Great efforts and very Inspiring Diamond Story! Special thanks to Karin for presenting such an insightful Diamond Journey!!
Because you can make it magical. The owner or whoever wears the diamond, will get magical power. The same thing happened with ancient books, scrolls, they had magical power.
18:09 Incredible doc and deep dive into diamonds! Thanks for having me, Karin and @DWHistoryandculture . It was a joy to talk about the world famous Koh-i-Noor Diamond and share my painting of the Koh-i-Noor.
One diamond that went missing is the Kochubey Blue diamond later on calling it Hetman Mazeppa diamond with a weight of 50 carats . The stone came from Turkey and after 1709 no one knows where it is . Rumours saying it was used in head gear of the Orthodox church a Mitre .
This is truly a high quality detective and documentairy and all credit goes to the wonderful moderatoress Ms. Karin Helmstaedt. What an interesting contribution and what a professional presentation, you notice as a spectator the experience and class of this woman. This is television at the highest level. Many thanks Deutsche Welle and especially Ms. Karin Helmstaedt for your wonderful documentary. It was a joy to see this and above all very informative. We hope for more documentaries from you! This is what makes DW so valuable, an experienced, a fantastic presenter and so interesting topics. Ms. Helmstaedt is a now a star and tradition with very diverse and interesting topics for the viewer. Keep up the good work! Thanks a lot!
Thanks for that interesting documentary. One can see a complex research and a very good presentation with knowledge and charme by Karin Helmstaedt in quite a short time. Anyway no hasty cuts and language wich I really appreciate. Can't stand all those fancy and superficial little documentary posts one can see so often nowadays...

Diamonds are valuable - they are not rare. The supply of them is strictly controlled by a certain “cartel” of dealers based mainly out of Tel Aviv and Antwerp. For whatever reason this cartel is permitted to exist without interference or competition. It’s all very political.
And they are closing Australia's diamond mines, saying they are empty.... pfft! (It's because of the diamond cartels, no other reason!) Apparently the diamonds in Aussie's mines are not rare, are large and come in many types, esp the so-called rare colours!
It's most likely impressive to have blue and red diamonds, it's more like impossible. imagine a 15 carats can cost according to the 4 cs millions of dollars.

Nothing special about diamonds, except for the Debeers marketing campaign. Diamonds are NOT rare, contrary to popular view & let's not forget about blood diamonds!
The rough blue diamond is stunning, I wish I could see it when it finally gets cut and polished.
