- Guilt-free precious gems - when it comes to jewelry, more and more people are checking the sustainability credentials. Environmentally friendly pearl cultivation and synthetic lab diamonds are helping make this possible - and minimizing harm to humans and the natural world.
For a long time, no one gave any thought to the ecological impact of jewelry. The river pearls used to adorn crowns were often taken from huge mussel beds in German rivers and streams. The species is now endangered and nature conservationist Wolfgang Degelmann is working to save it. "The mussel can look back on a 230-million-year history, when the conditions for it to thrive were just right. Then humans come along and after 100 years, that 230-million-year history was trampled underfoot." Degelmann runs a mussel breeding program with the aim of reintroducing the creature to its natural habitat.
In the Fiji Islands off the coast of Savusavu, Justin Hunter runs a sustainable pearl farm in a bid to save the black-lip pearl oyster from extinction. He’s imposed strict environmental regulations here to create an intact underwater world, a prerequisite for naturally occurring pearls. For their part, the oysters also contribute to the marine ecosystem; each one filters several hundred liters of water every day. Hunter has in the meantime persuaded many locals in Savusavu to get involved in environmental protection - after all, most of the island’s inhabitants live from the fruits of the sea and from tourism in their South Pacific paradise.
In the Austrian Alps, twins Hannes and Gerhard Hofer hike through the mountains for days, venturing into unexplored caves to extract precious gems and crystals from the rock - in restricted quantities. Crystal collectors must adhere to strict environmental criteria.
Jewelry designer Helge Maren Hauptmann uses lab diamonds for her collection. "There’s no discernible difference, they’re genuine diamonds - just cultivated rather than naturally occurring," she says. The synthetic diamonds do leave a carbon footprint, but it’s smaller than the natural gems, which are often mined in Africa using child labor. Lab-grown diamonds are also cheaper. All things considered, perhaps it’s no surprise that demand is rising.

Already love the intro "If you look after Nature, It looks after us" I thank the land I reside on daily since many globally are without a home
So true, but it seems we do a lot of talking but not the actions.
@@SuzyEH prob always not enough we can do but many do try our best! My mother uses an insane amount of plastic trash bags and we’ve spent decades trying to educate her about plastic but I think she’s from a generation that has certain OCDs stemming from unresolved traumas, I’ve found many elders her generation have wasteful or hoarding habits Prob from war/post world war & then I’m from the Captain Planet/Pollution Solution generation 🌍♻️

God looks after us not nature
DW makes the best documentaries. Thank you DW.
This particular documentary was commissioned by Zweites Deutsches Fernsehen (ZDF); Deutsche Welle prepared the English-language version.
Watching this warmed my heart! It's amazing to see the jewelry industry embracing sustainability. 💖💎 The stories of environmentally friendly pearl cultivation and lab diamonds are not just about gems; they're about a more compassionate way of living. Here's to beauty that cares! 🌍✨
It's just a tiny part. Almost all pearls and precious stones use low paid base workers and degrade environment
Thank you for saving these mussels and for this educational video. 😊
Very nice documentary. Nature is just amazing to me. This really shows how symbiotic our natural planet is. One species thrives upon another.
Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment.
This documentary is excellent except that it doesn't show enough of the finished jewellery pieces.
Am a pro life, pro nature advocate of Nigerian descent,i feel happy knowing that people strive so hard to preserve life and nature and i also appreciate the efforts to people put into making synthetic stones for jewelry at least makes it more affordable for earthians
Fascinating how Scientific Ingenuity and a good dose of Moral Consciousness can accomplish for mankind...Nature nurtures best if only humans attain the right balance between ecological heritage and fashion statements.
Great Job DW Documentaries 👏
Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment!
It's good to see people being environmentally sensitive when producing totally unnecessary, decorative prestige products for the wealthy and the fashion industry. 😐
In an ideal world we would be helping the planet without an ulterior motive, but in our world if something is not profitable or enjoyed by elites and the big middle class (pretending to be elite) it’s simply not sustainable.
It’s not the best system but to make the wealthy or superficial pay for an environmental cause is our best shot yet.
@@Orin9139 I can't find fault with anything you've said. How un-UA-cam is THAT? 😐
Getting the wealthy to do something - anything - useful or helpful with their money is an odd and daunting challenge. But, it's worth the effort - especially if they can be made to part with it willingly for whatever reason.
Best wishes from Vermont 🍁

Wonderful documentary.
Brilliantly presented.
They do add a sparkle 💖 to our lives 🎁💎🎻🥂🍾🌝
Thanks for watching and for the feedback!
We have that problem, too with mussels in the Willamette Valley.
Those were harvested to threatened because of buttons.
A lot of old mussels.
Time to reclaim the meadows.
Same in Tennessee. Mussel Shoals used to be called that because of the insane amount of mussels there, making a shoal in the river. It is completely empty now from pearls and the same, buttons, like you were saying.
Blame DuPond and other big corporations that pollute environment
Wonderful documentary, mussels and oysters are so underappreciated!❤❤❤
Beautiful nature
Very interesting as always DW👍👏👋
Thanks for watching and for the feedback!

It's good to know that we can still have nice things without being greedy, destructive pigs.
Very interesting documentary.
I love pearls but I’m dubious about the provenance of them so hold back from buying. I’d like some guidance how to be sure they are environmentally sourced. Thank you for a very informative video
Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment!
Thank you for great content!
Conflict diamonds will become a thing of the past.
Indeed those are great precious things yet hope these will be sustainable and be environmental friendly - as the most precious gem is the single planet that supports life, EARTH. ❤❤❤ 😊
Diamonds kinda seem tacky and gawdy now that pretty much any piece of glass can be cut and polished in the same way.... They make people look insecure...
Great documentary!
Its a very nice video/documentary.
Wow thank you. Happy 2024, @DW! LOOKING FORWARD TO ALL YOUR DOCUS 😊
...interesting. thanks again, DW. ❤
not the kind of topic i would be interested in at all usually - but i can definitely see the value(/interest*), and it takes special eyes to find cases like these. ♥
and by that, i meant the jewelry sense specifically... there is no doubt that, in case of oysters, the filtration that the organisms do have potentially immense benefits, even i know that. :) not to mention the role they've played in the ecosystem for ages...
props to Mr. Hunter, he truly looks dedicated and impassionated with his work... :) also, TIL (or realized) that apparently pearls are not only a natural cycle kind of thing, but rather (incredibly) a way for the organism to protect itself? perhaps? but more specfiically its offspring, if i understood...
[i don't wanna talk bad about the "60 pearls per oyster and then they die" thing, but it seems like the body treats it as a tumor/cancer/foreign threat - we, i suppose, must find the best ways to harvest these resources out of their systems, yet that must take a lot of energy out of it, but then it's sad to consider that the thing not only died for it, but those are basically "tears of an oyster" once it's all done ...]
A wonderful documentary about pearls and diamonds 💎..in nature and synthetic jewelry...thank you 🙏 DW documentary channel. thank you for sharing
Very informative documentary 👍.
wow pretty revealing why the die forelle war so launisch. Also, this doku reminded me of an incident at a seafood restaurant many moons ago, last saltwater mussel on the plate and i urged my German friend to have it. We divided it and i got a pearl in my piece. She has it to this day.
Wow the work they are doing they are like God for those little ones
One of the best from dw. An addict able channel in positive.
Thanks for watching and sharing your positive feedback!
Pretty pretty. “If you look after nature, it looks out after us”.
I had jewelry custom made using lab grown emeralds, sapphires, and moissanite. Tiny tiny fraction of the cost of mined stones which are the same thing
You can't even get jewelery grade moissanite naturally
The Diamonds are only about 30% cheaper and have almost no resale value
@@clivebaxter6354 lab diamonds are closer to 95 percentage off over real diamonds for the smaller ones in wholesale costs
but it's not based on percentage like research papers want you to believe
I would love to know all there business links so we could buy off these small local businesses
Re sale value of factory diamonds almost nil, and not that much cheaper.
Would it be a bad idea to make artificial muscle beds fed from the rivers? Maybe make a muscle bed here or there along it. How much could a farmer make from the oysters and pearls?
Diamonds are not particularly rare especially today, Thanks De Beers for a fake market. In antiquity, gemstones were more often the stones of choice, not Diomands. Jewelry and precious gems are a big racket with one of the biggest profit spreads of a commodity upwards of 500% profit and because of the public's ignorance, they get away with it. Only topped by the Art market
very nice!
Great documentary, but the subtitles have a bug: the word "yes!" is imposed continuously. Can someone remove it? Please!
I'm perfectly happy with my CZs...💎
Good morning and happy New year to you from Kenneth D in Hamilton New Zealand 😂😢😂😢..
My drillers will tell you, "Diamonds aren't just for beautification, and lab diamonds are much more economical." At the end of the day we could care less if the diamonds used on the drill bits were lab-grown or mined.
I love this video. Very interesting and entertaining. I LOVED that they had voice overs instead of subtitles in the non-English speaking scenes. I work on my art while watching UA-cam so it was a blessing that there was no need to the stupid subtitles like the lazy channels do.
100L a day.. WOW, never knew they were water filter like that!
It's like inflicting kidney stone to a creature
You know it's serious when the John Wick theme kicked in
Yes!
Speaking of Dimond why does Google have a German man that deals in Dimond running its security systems?
Sadly lab-grown diamonds have almost zero resale value.
I plan to use LG diamonds for my own brand, along with conflict free main diamonds.
So she is walking around the stream and crushing all the baby mussels...there has to be a better way of keeping track.
He didnt go to Jared?
Can I use that diamond for a cutter?
They said it's the same chemically. So yes. Problem is they also said the process is a secret. So it will take a while for someone else to re-invent the process for cutters. Human greed is still there slowing progress down
What is it with that loud, unnecessary background music in all those documentaries ?
Why Germans are so smart? I love and admire Germans. And also they are kind and generous
They really are good at everything, no exceptions
Imagine that.
Pearls are nicer than mossles, but cleaner water is better than pearls
What is they mean by 'Ethic diamonds'? Original diamonds are not ethic? What a hilarious statement.
Who else is fed up with humans destroying the natural environment?😢
I can make my own crown if I want, from amber and silver.
"Clear conscious"? do you understand the pollution cost of synthetic gems?
wait I didn't know mussels are endangered animal?? they're always on my plate when I order seafood. is this the same mussel?? and I hate them, they taste awful 😭
I think that it's about time for humanity to unite and make one really huge diamond making machine which can produce diamonds which weight at least 50kg and then make faceted Buddha statue out of it !!! It will be marvel of marvels and joy of joys for all the human race !!!
buddha prob deserves 1 ton worth of diamonds to make it comparable to the golden statues.
Thank you for this video to remind me why I should never ever buy a pearl!
Recapture carbon from the atmosphere or flue, and make precious gems.
Easy money.
This would be a very lucrative trade sector for any nation that focuses on high technology.
For fire choose moissanite not diamond
For moderate fire choose diamond
For little fire sapphire
Near zero idk maybe quartz
Btw best diamond simulant is cz (fire near diamond level so moderate)
Best value jewelry is 316L with cz
Personally I purchase mainly moissanite for my family
with starling silver (unfortunately silver is soft )
Mined diamonds should be placed on par with fur coats and cigarettes.
The title is completely misleading. There is almost nothing about artificial gems. This is a northern Europe nature short film and should be described and titled as such. Just trawling for clicks.
The title actually doesn't say anything about artificial gems. It says precious gems with a conscience. This has to do with artificial gems and also artificial environments.
@@Hollylivengood And yet in common parlance and in reference to infamous “blood diamonds,” manmade diamonds and other gems are invariably the items of contrast. The volume of production and the very low profile of the pearls discussed leaves manmade gems as the implicit topic of a video offered for general cosumption. Hence, the title is misleading.
They can filter 100L per day, yes but they also have to cause ground movement to be able to filter... this adds more smaller pearls to an oyster and makes them worthless.
So uuuh, harmony? Far from the truth.
There is absolutely zero GOOD reason as to why you should ever buy a non lab grown gem...
🥂🥂
no need to mine diamonds ..buy less mined diamonds it saves the earth a lot..a 1 kilo diamond is made for elon musk.
Oh, yeah.
Lab grown diamonds are less harmful to the environment.
If you ignore the massive amount of energy and resources that are required to make them.
The only real complaints about natural diamonds have to do with the methods being used to harvest them. Similar methods are being used to harvest the materials needed for a lab to manufacture diamonds.
Why aren't you complaining about them too?
Great doc. Not a fan of getting the kid into that cave, but okay.
It should be returned to India.
Woke DW love from down under
Lab diamonds are NOT natural diamonds
The narrator has a problem with the word Jewlery and not Jewellery
Watch out for Chinese fishermans.
Best thing for nature or environment is just to stop using jewelleries.
DP is a heartless person.
So sad
Natural diamond are real . So say no to zirconium 😊
There are also carbon based diamonds from labs
@@definitlynotbenlente7671 fake diamond 💎 man made..not natural

Hey! You are stealing content from Planet A! Not fair your budget can not be compared with them 😢
It's still fake
