      I mean, yeah, it’s cheap shock humour, but it’s there for a reason, most evident by the fact that later on in the episode Stewie drunkenly tells Brian that he only made him do that cause he knew he could manipulate Brian into doing it.
      The way the episode breaks down the two characters flaws and lays them out is why I personally think it’s one of the last “Good” family guy episodes

      Yeah, but there's this one other bit in the serious conversation itself that made me iffy; Stewie calling Brian selfish, while pretty acurate in terms of who he is now, was because of how Brian was considering "sudoku".
      Sure, he may not've seen how Stewie deeply cares for him then (ignoring how he's likely been butchered in that way after this), but calling the "sudoku slidal" one that they're selfish for not considering how their friends & family would feel (as well as any other reason for that matter) doesn't help & just makes the person feel worse! They aren't choosing to feel this way; it ranges from trauma, anxiety, to other mental problems; modern Brian is selfish, but "sudoku-slidal" people aren't, as they're victims of some kind of pain. Sorry for the length!

    I don't think it was a bad episode per se, just a mixed bag. The gross out humor didn't fit in at all, but there was a heartfelt moment between Brian and Stewie. This episode could have worked earlier in the series when the humor was a bit more lighthearted and the characters weren't so awful. In the early seasons Brian and Stewie had a dynamic was that developing and Brian was the straight man of the show.

    I loved this episode when it first came out and for many years……however as the years passed and I’ve grown up, I really dislike the dynamic between Brian and EVERYONE not just Stewie, Brian is extremely unlikable which immediately takes away any sympathy or care that I’d even think to have for him….thus that destroys the tension this story had

    • @_Sage967_
      @_Sage967_ 9 місяців тому +18

      not only is Brian unlikable but it feels like they have to make him progressively WORSE as other characters commit heinous acts and transgressions themselves but often not an intellectual manner which makes Brain feel like the worst. then there's the fact that Brain often brings out the worst in others so they can both either compete for whose the worst or lambast Brian far more than he deserves in the given situation
      Stewies relationship with Brian can occasionally be the worst of the bunch because of this with his pregnancy and Brian giving him Herpies being standout examples

    I was done with Brian and Stewie after Stewie went to college with Brian. For some reason, Brian took a hard class instead of taking an easier class to finish his credits, and was flunking as a result. He let Stewie cheat for him, and then tried to honestly pass after goofing off, only to flunk his finals.
    After flunking, he acts happy about it. He never tried to get his diploma again after that. Stewie didn’t really do Brian any favors by cheating for him, only to fall short of properly teaching Brian the material and helping him properly study to pass his finals. That felt like not only the beginning of Brian’s pseudo intellectualism and increasing of his pretentiousness, but the pointlessness of Stewie and Brian as a duo [to me].

    • @LibraGamesUnlimited
      @LibraGamesUnlimited 9 місяців тому +8

      Didn't Brian take that class because it was the one he didn't finish? As I recall, it was the last class he had left and he needed credits from it to graduate.
      Also the reason he was happy was that he didn't quit, he completed something for the first time in his life.
      I agree though that he should have gone back later to actually graduate.

    Fucked up as this may seem, having Brian eat Stewie's shit wasn't just about making a gross-out gag. It was about Brian sacrificing his comfort and dignity for Stewie's sake. In this case, so he wouldn't get sick from a diaper rash. This, right after Stewie screwed up royally by not using what little time he had left on his phone to call for help. The poop thing doesn’t ruin it for me because it was taken somewhat seriously. Stewie didn’t do it out of spite, he didn’t have a way to clean himself up and Brian’s a dog who eats his own poop sometimes. It was conflict in the context of the episode. The “problem” with most of these gags are that they’re done out of spite by other characters.

      That's kinda why I prefer American Dad to Family Guy. There are tons of memorable cutaways, but not many memorable episodes.

The fact that Brian would even do such a thing to help his friend is what you’re supposed to get out of it, and that tied with the poignant moments after the fact is what makes the episode strong. It shows the two have a true bond and Brian would do anything to protect the little twerp who gets him into whacky shenanigans. He’s a prick, but he’s Stewie’s prick, if that makes any sense.

      I’ll definitely agree that the diaper scene is an unnecessary gag mainly due to how long it’s drawn out, there definitely are better ways to build up to the scene where Brian and Stewie drunkenly argue with eachother, but really Enter’s whole argument here just boils down to a 10 minute video of what can be summed up as “Diaper scene bad therefore episode bad” to me there seemed like no actual analysis or constructive criticism here.

      @diarawisteria2218 9 місяців тому +9

      @@builttoscalevideos No, he made other arguments during the video. You can dislike that he didn't address a potential counterargument without dismissing his other arguments.
      Arguments he made:
      + Diaper scene is forced and ruins the character drama the episode was going for. When an episode of a comedy wants you to take it seriously as a drama, going for an outlandish gross-out scene that makes at least one character entirely unlikable kills the tension, as it is easy to lose any potential investment in the character and their relationships.
      + He argues that it's a bad episode *even without the diaper scene*. Mr. Enter points to episodes that have done more fulfilling riffs on this dynamic (without breaking tone or being preceded by scenes that ruin investment).
      + One of his main points is that the episode feels "empty". That is, it's a difficult format of writing to pull off ('locked in a box' stories need careful maneuvering to be interesting without setting changes and interruptions by other characters), and the sideplots either bored him or were annoying.
      I'd have to rewatch later to be clearer, as I am focusing most of my attention elsewhere, but if you'd like to make counterarguments to his arguments, or point out a, "Hey, I think you missed [X] in your video.", I'd suggest actually engaging with said arguments, and avoiding passive-aggressive diction. What you mentioned about the diaper scene doesn't really disprove or even hinder his arguments, and you even countered your own counterargument; I'd imagine you could have done this in a far less rude manner.

    For me all this episode does is just show how bad Stewie and Brian as characters have become because Brian was nowhere near this depressed or depressing to watch in earlier seasons and Stewie is just kind of irritating to watch now. Stewie used to be a multi-faceted character he wanted to take over the world kill his mother for whatever reason and there were also hints of him wanting to kind of get over that and he couldn't make up his mind as to whether or not he was gay or not because it came and went with whoever was writing the episode at the time. But now Brian is just constant depression incarnate and Stewie is just the gay baby who sometimes is super smart. The most interesting thing about this episode is how many alternate versions of it there are cuz there's a version of the episode that outright points out that Dewey is a genius who invented a freaking time machine and he should be able to unlock the bank door and the Stewie's just like I'm not a miracle worker or something along those lines and it's just so dumb. While I do think that funny adult cartoons can pull off sad moments that actually make me feel really well (Simpsons and Futurama are some examples), Family Guy just isn't that show. When Family Guy tries it, it just comes across as really emotionally manipulative because those so-called serious moments are based on moments that were previously portrayed as funny. Seahorse Seashell Party was the perfect example of this, all the sudden the audience is supposed to feel guilty for Meg, despite 10 seasons of her being the butt of the joke, was super jarring and inconsistent with what Seth MacFarlane had been showing his audience all these years. In fact, I could really say the same thing about Season 10 in general, which got really dark and dramatic out of pretty much nowhere.

    By distilling everyone down to tropes, they've left Brian as the only serious character on the show, and that's not a role he can carry. He used to be Peter's straight man, and his intellectual angle worked there to balance out Peter's stupidity. But put against Stewie who started as a baby genius it just comes off as pretentious, and having seen that they've leaned into it, which makes the problem even worse. You absolutely can have a character who is in the right and the wrong equally often, but it takes finesse to do it well, and you need to not have these absolutely egregious character moments because it recontextualizes how we see the character.
    Imagine if after the rock opera episode of Bojack if the show kept the tone of the earlier episodes, and that's what Family Guy feels like.

    It really feels weird to see an over the top show with an episode that is more down to earth. However, not every show can go there in the right way, and Family Guy is the perfect reason why.
    This show is known to be trolling, even in the episodes that they are describing meant to be more serious. Not All Dogs Go to Heaven, Peter-Assment, Seahorse Seashell Party, Life of Brian and ESPECIALLY Screams of Silence. Taking a show like this in a serious matter is impossible, because even then they kill the mood or shoving their self propaganda into our face when it certainly isn’t needed or even harmful. And yes, this episode is counted too. The diaper scene is enough to show that even in this episode they just have to keep trolling. This is why I despise this show with a rotting passion.
