You can relate to someone even though they might be extremely different, you know? There only needs to be a tiny amount of similarities for relation to happen. If it's Rick, you don't also have to be a super scientist capable of whatever. Rick is an extremely self-destructive, self-serving, co-dependant and heavily unsatisfied person who sometimes gets a bout of extreme depression and nihilism. He has almost every single flaw you can put into a person. Ofc, some people will find him relatable, they only need to relate to at least one aspect of Rick.
It's for the same reason that Bojack Horseman is relatable to some people. He also has a bunch of flaws in one package. These characters sometimes help these people process their feelings.

I agree, but strip away the sci-fi trappings, genocide, and slavery on a universal scale, and Rick is just an old man that keeps fucking up his life and the lives of those around him, almost in spite of himself and even when he seems to be succeeding in other aspects of his life. That's not a role model, to be sure, but I can relate to that a little bit. He's almost like a murderous Britta.

I think we should all want to be a bit like Jerry- he's dorky and things don't work out for him, but he keeps on going anyway. • @AscendtionArc

It hilarious because the show's about how stupid smart people can be.
Rick's as co-dependent on the family as Beth and Jerry are, it's just he has a way to technically replace that dynamic with a very close facsimile.
He's given up on idealism and is trying to find some value in his life from his connections, but can't admit that 'weakness', though he kind of does at the end of S3, despite calling it toxic.

Regarding the A and B plot thing: the audio commentary on South Park constantly talks about that. On almost any episode that has a single plot, they talk about how they should do more episodes like that. Then in the very next episode, they are right back to an A and B plot, and regret making it like that since each plot had enough material for two separate episodes. If the show wasn't made in six days, they would've had enough time to split it up into two episodes. And the funny thing is, they have literally never learned. Partly Agree. To me one of my least favourite character choices was giving Rick a clearly defined backstory as a motivation for a stupid meta-joke that contradicts his character and creates a plothole.
So I guess Rick isn't really that nihilistic after all since he's out for revenge against Rick Prime, I mean that literally goes against the concept of nothing in life mattering to him.
Then it creates a plothole, in S3E01, it's stated that you can't alter the details of a memory so Rick in a stroke of genius created a new memory for himself. Well, I guess it wasn't that genius as what was stated to be impossible is now possible for no reason.

Heck Infinity War, which is part of the very thing the episode trying to parody that is the MCU, is a better Vindicators than Vindicators!! Most of the characters die due to a character that's clever than the rest, the main flaws of the characters are actually what DO cause their downfall such as the infamous Star Lord scene, there's fights between the heroic characters but not because they hate each other or because of cheating drama (which thanks I hate it Vindicators) but because they're under a lot of pressure to stop Thanos.

Rick may be a super scientist, and the "smartest guy in the universe", but in nearly every episode he always manages to come out on top with little to no conflict whatsoever. He does have flaws, but they don't prevent him from achieving his goals. In other words, he's too invincible. And if someone is too invincible, then there's no sense of tension or investment.
I guess that's why it feels refreshing to hear Dr. Wong's speech at the end, describing how Rick uses "...intelligence to justify sickness". Maybe it's just me, but the show often frames Rick as "correct" when he's suppose to be in the wrong. And those who do challenge him, or his philosophy, are often framed as "in the wrong".

I kidna wish he was protrayed as something like a "underdog demon" that instead of doing "classical faustian deals" he wants to profit from them in style and all theatrical by selling to villains. that sure he can be more powerful than normal humans (hence easily bullying flugg, dementia and the robots) but he is not omnipotent.

@loafhero, the only time I’ve seen B plots matching up in A plots done really well are in anime series like Zatch Bell for example which Mr Enter also thinks it’s his most favorite Shonen Jump anime/manga series, and in other mediums of entertainment I also agree with Mr Enter that a cartoon series, tv series, or movie series if they’re going to going to have an A plot and a B plot than they should overlap each other and being told well. For example in Zatch Bell in one of Mr Enter’s Admirable Animation video he did a video on where how Kiyo’s A plot of being a teenaged Japanese high school honor student he doesn’t have all the time in the world to look after Zatch all the time, so the A plot of the episode is Kiyo making a toy for Zatch to play with until Kiyo isn’t busy with school life to spending time with Zatch, and the B plot revolves around another Madamoo owner that has same thing with their life too except they’re in the wealthiest neighborhoods in Japan until the Madamoo is killed because they’re forced to fight on Earth for every 1,000 years or so, and Zatch after becoming Madamoo King wants to abolish the death match system.

Like we've seen Rick go through heavy character development before remember when he sacrificed his life to pull Morty out of the Schrodinger's cat Dimension. Sure he changed his mind but that was at the very last minute when an unknown variable came into play, before the other caller came into sight he was giving up his life so Morty could continue to live. I'd really only say it was the very first season where Rick and Morty just tried to be a comedy after that every episode in my opinion at least from what I watched could be looked at in two ways the most directed forward way would be to say it's just a comedy show (which is fine). The other way would be to look at it as social commentary through a comedic medium.

16:45 Credited this being the subplot is no excuse for subpar performance, yet it’s a psychology session. Literally the entirety of that scenario involves talking, the ‘telling no showing’ issue. If the dynamic was exclusive to Rick and the psych MAYBE it could’ve been grounded (acknowledged as another antithesis to the show) w/ a more focused script.
In Treatment (HBO) is a great example of relying on the back-and-forth dynamic if interested.

I remember there were accusations that the therapist was a mary sue due to how quickly she had Rick and his issues figured out. At first I was skeptical, I mean, Rick's not a complex guy. I'd figure any therapist worth their salt could have Rick figured out pretty darn quick. THEN I saw a picture of the writer for the episode and it all fell into place.

To be fair, sometimes you have to speed things up, even if it means a lack of realism.

@@Air_Serpent It's not a matter of speeding things up, like I said, any therapist who actually worked for their degree could get a pretty good grasp on Rick pretty darn quick.
The issue, is that THIS therapist looks like a Rick and Morty version of the writer of the episode.

I would say it, at the very least, gave us memes, but the memes it gave us are the scourge and bane of my existence.

It's easy to try to pander to the internet and offer "memes" for it, Scoob tried to do that and you know what it worked... then it quickly faded. Trying to pander to meme culture is essentially offering nothing.

Between Emplemon’s analysis of this episode and now Mr. Enter’s, I can safely say the *Pickle Rick* dragon has at last been slain.
