Oh man, that last-minute tip on how to diagnose an AquaClear filter with low flow? That's solid gold right there! Thanks so much for those valuable tips, Cory.
You touched on a subject by saying a cpl words Cory. When you said " being lead by fear" I have suffered with depression and anxiety. Being lead by fear is an awful feeling. Thanks for making me reflect. I have been lead by light...even through this hobby..✌️👍
I super chated 5 bucks about a tight fitting sponge and got a super simple answer.Cut it. My mind was so blown as I didn't have the common sense to think of it myself.lol Thanks Cory.
And I think you need that 20 part filtration series. Always a fascinating subject. Would love to know more !! And don’t water change bacteria blooms... I don’t think I’ve ever had one in my aquarium
Yeah, back in my day, when I first started out, back in the early 90's, there really weren't any sponge filters so conveniently available; and with that fact not withstanding in light of the current popularity, not to mention the overall functionality-- nowadays, I wouldn't settle for anything less. Simple physics, and in essence, does multiple jobs at once. The perfect tool. Cory you and your tream are the elite best in the U.S. sir. Period.
Enjoying these Sunday live streams - you truly are the King of the Livestream! (think of the t-shirt possibilities with that!) I think the question is: Does Dorkula want to have the sportscar??? (no question on the parking spot - she gets it!) Finally someone mentions that high flow is not always good. Nice explanation on exactly how a sponge filter works. You mentioned research papers! Yay!! Read people, READ!!
Timely watch!! Am setting up a 100 gallon high and was wondering what filtration system to be used. Am convinced on sponge filters now as it will be planted with angels, tetras and corys. Excellent video and inputs as always Cory!!
Thanks so much for all the info! I love these informative livestreams. I really appreciate your talent at explaining and your patience with answering some of the same questions over and over.
i have just got back into fishkeeping after 30 years. wow its all changed somewhat. i have watched a few of your youtube vids extremely helpfull and very interesting. your vids i top rate i like the way you talk and explain to the camera in laymens terms making it easy to understand, and good to listen to nice job
I would never be able to work in a customer service environment 😂. Your kind of a full time school teacher too! People dont pay very good attention and dont know whats going on it seems like. Great job coby.
Thanks again for answering my question about ammonia in tap water, looks like I was already doing what you suggested (having plants, using Prime), but I'll definitely have to keep in mind not to feed fish after a water change.
hey cory just wanna say thanks for all your advice on fliters plants and all that good stuff. i recently got stuff from you online sponge filters and a upgrade on my hang on filter. i appreceiate your time making these videos .
Great information as always! I learned some important advice. I am guilty of cramming sponge into my hang on back filter thinking I was hot rodding the filter. And yes the water flow is hindered. Thanks Cory.
The question on the aquaclear being slow helped me today!! Here I thought my filters getting older hence slower, but the tubes were clogged on my filters... THANK YOU CORY!!
I love those double sponge filters for polishing the water in small tanks. My 5 gal was never that transparent until I added it (keep in mind this tank also runs a small canister filter, so I'm an overkill type of personality).
I’m really considering an undergravel filter for planted tanks. I’ve done it in the past for non planted tanks, using Hot Magnum 250 canister filters for powerheads, but I can see how it would be awesome for plants. Not sure about what kind of a filter hack I’d use. I’m thinking of using my hang on back filters in place of powerheads.
Glad to hear that your thinking of moving the Tiger Barbs, always thought there are too many stripes in there! The Archer fish look fabulous, and the Clown loaches too. The tiger barbs create too much visual 'noise', in my opinion anyway. What are you going to replace the Tigers with? Love the talk about filtration, always a fascinating topic.
i have a community tank full of loaches. a small colony of zebras, a larger colony of yoyos, and 6 dojo loaches. i give them PVC pipes. they love the little tunnels and they dont get scratched up. mine are white, but u could get a darker color if you didnt want them to stand out as much. i've never had a problem with them eating floating water sprite. they love to lay on it like a hammock. they'll still dig it up if you plant it so its better to float it.
I know this is a bit late, but with the brown algae. I had the same issue and unfortunately my fix was RODI water. My water was heavy with silicates and by doing the proper cycling and water changes I helped feed it every single week. I figured this out by realizing that the scum I cleaned out of my sinks and toilets was actually the same thing. So it was just in my tap. I went to my county's water report to find the wells where in a sand bed and heavy on phosphates and silicates. I switched to RODI with equilibrium and easy green for the plants and now I haven't had a single outbreak since.
just bought from your store and planning to do only from you because of your informative videos! going to try the pre filter sponge as soon as it arrives.
For the biohome and biogravel to produce anarobic bacteria (the one that converts nitrates to nitrogen gas). They advise to have about 1kg of media for every 100 litres with slow flow with good Mechanical fitration to remove detritus (Course, medium and fine sponge pads). It costs $18.50 per kg so can get expensive if you have a large tank.
Question: A> will my Aqueon 20 gallon back filter on my 10 gallon tank with 6 zebra danios, 6 mollys, 1 serpae, 2 tinfoil tetras and a pleco suffice with weekly partial water changes? B> Can I add a sponge filter also?
With the air filter sponge would making the riser tube taller and putting a long sweep elbow on it then run a pipe horizontal close to the end of the aquarium with small holes drilled in it help with circulation better?
@Aquarium Co-Op Hey i have a pretty simple Question and would like to know what you think. So we have a Sump with 3 liters of Biologic Filtermediavolume inside, the Pump is running with 2100l/h. If we now Up the Filtermediavolume by 2 Liters (so 5 Liters inside now) and reduce the flow of the Pump to 1500l/h, do you think that compensates for the filter performance? Just in theorie if you would know the ratio. Of course, the adjustment would only be possible up to a certain limit. I am looking forward to your answer! :D Cheers Timo
Cory I appreciate these videos and all your time and money invested , hope you are every bit as successful as you deserve .... Glenn in central Florida
That’s a shame,.,.,. Losing your sound. I was looking forward to your input on sponge filters. I’m planning to use poret foam from Swiss Tropicals on my 150 gallon. I’ll check back later. Awesome videos Corey....
That sponge filter is hilarious. Makes Cory look like a midget :D Some good serious points made though. I have always found the technical info on most home aquatic equipment dubious at best. As said in this video giving any filter a water volume that it is suitable for just doesn't make sense.
I was thinking about what you said about a rate of filtration or what you would need. I think you were on the right track when you mentioned how much food you put in. How much food translates into how much waste minus whatever the fish use for their own nutrition and growth. Maybe a fair test or rating of a filtration system would be how much food can you pour inWhatever size tank daily before it gets to the point where it’s so clogged up it needs to be cleaned out. What are your thoughts about that?
did you change lighting? haven't been watching as much lately, but this is the first video I noticed this. Looks very good prolly the best "look" to a video in this room yet.
Hi Corry, Thank you for the loads of info that you give all the time but can't understand why you have no lava rocks as a best media? Could you please talk about it? Thank you!
Lava rock is ok, the problem is depending on the rock some are better than others and they can be extreme hard to clean after they clog up. But they are nice and cheap.
Very interesting to learn you are changing your filtration on the 800 gal. Seemed like you loved the canister with its backflow system. I am trying to reduce nitrates by mechanical means as it sounds like you are (to reduce water changes). I am using filter socks on a sump. There should be other ways to catch the waste before it becomes nitrate. Please invent something.
I watched your show on howmuch filtration however I watched other shows so I went to your web site to check on two items I'm interested in plant food and the sponge filters . but looking from nano to large , it doesn't tell what gallon aquariums to use them in . Thank you .
Watched the whole video as well as many other videos but still not sure if what I'm using is enough for my tank! If you respond to old comments I'd love to know a few things specific to my set up. Just changed some things after several other fancy goldfish died after 9 months. Tank has been established for almost two years. Twenty-nine gallon tank, two two inch fancy goldfish, emporer with two bio wheels, course 2 1/2 inch sponge on each side with floss in front of them, a small bag of bio-rings on one side, peasize gravel and just started tank plants (I bought from your website) and an intake filter sponge (I also bought from your website). I use a 240 mph circulation/wave pump that I move around. Is this overkill? I also have very hard water and my nitrates (40ppm) and pH (8.4 high range solution) are typically high even after 20 to 40% water changes approx every 5-7 days (depending on my parameters), ammonia and nitrates are always perfect. I worry about oxygenation since my kiddos "yawn" often, but never troll for oxygen at the surface. Tank heater set at 73° and feed a variety of food two times a day very small portions but mostly veggies with some protein and occasional snacks (bloodworms). I've been considering switching to a pond pump recommended by Goldfish 911. Sorry so long, hope your able to respond.
HI I love all your shows but i have a Question? nothing to do with filtration. I have a 40 gal. tank with Cichlid , Tiger Barbs, & cory catfish can i put my two Dragon fish in the same tank? I live in Thailand & the fish stores here in Udon thani can't help me they don't know. Can you help.
What do you sell to properly utilize filtration for my Fx6 . I am a novice at fish keeping I have watched your shows and like your thinking . Bye the way I have bought several sponge filters and plant food from you .
Hi i have a 25 gallon tall tank it came with tray top filter under the top with three types of sponges i added a medium size sponge filter. I have gravel on bottom the tank with root tabs for my plants java moss,4 java fern, 1 amazon sword, anubias nana. I have 5 female betta fish 2 zebra nerite snails. I fertilize when needed. water change every week 25 per. Is there any thing else i should be doing. I have had the tank for nearl 2 years i have always had the betta fish and java fern, anubias on coconut shell. i just added the snails and other plants.
Everyone tells me I go overboard when it comes to filtration... I have two questions 1.) is there such a thing as "to much filtration?" 2.) I think it's perfect for my 29 Gallon tank... where can I buy that foam filter you show @ 23:38
Kinda related, but what is a good powerhead for very small (10 gal or less) aquariums? I'm looking into sponge filters but cant seem to find a small, reliable powerhead. Won't a large one like on your website make too strong of a current? Are they adjustable?
I love this angle and lighting of the aquarium. Do you customize the lighting of the aquarium for filming at this angle? No glare and the background looks great!
I have a small hang on back took out carbon added the 100 % polyester fill. I also have a sponge filter that I use with a no clog filter. What I need to know is. When I do my water change do I need to throw away the polyester or just clean it in the aquarium water and put it back in the filter.
i have 1x Eheim classic 600, 1x eheim subfilter 600, 1x spongefilter runned by eheim air pump 400, 1x eheim skim 350, 1x eheim mini up are this to much for my 50 gal tank?
where can I get the large filter sponges you use please I am in the Uk really enjoy your interesting videos so very informative really appreciate you spending soooooo much time
ok I'm gonna be breeding blue shrimp and guppies I have a 20 gallon a 10 gallon and a 5 gallon for this purpose right now hypothetically, if I use a hang on the back filter, what size filter should I use for that many fish in a 20 gallon?
I’m partial to Seachem Matrix for bio-media. It’s worked very well for me the last 5 years in several tanks and I’ve just stuck with it. MarinePure is supposed to be the bees knees but it’s pricey and complete overkill for most setups.
Hey Corey I'm watching TWO years later despite the audio issues! I'm currently running a fully stocked well planted 75 gal.- three angels, 12 diamond tetras, BN pleco, rainbow shark, a couple rainbows. I've been filtering with a hamburg mattenfilter with a QuietOne 1200 pump driving it. I bought an Aquaclear 110, thinking more flow would reduce the surface film. Then I look at the amount of sponge between the two, and wonder if the swap is a good idea. The HMF obviously is more area at 18x20x3" but the surface is gross. The AQ110 moves more water, but has so much less area. What would you do? (BTW, Canisters are out ($$), air pumps are out (noise), and multiple HOBs are out (back of tank rim is occupied by light clamps)....what's the better choice between the two I have??
I have 30+ mystery snails, a dwarf gourami and about 6 dwarf cordydora in a 29 gallon with a large sponge filter and a rated 70 gallon HOB aquaclear. Does anyone think im over/under filtering?
Hi Cory Love watching your vids. Interested to know your thoughts on sponge vs matten filters. Have always bought canister filters in the past but since watching your earlier vids I have combined sponge filters as well and seeing I now have 8 aquariums ranging from 2 feet to 6 feet I am looking to convert to Matten filtration which I believe is just a giant sponge filter. My main concern is I don't thing I will have enough circulation in my larger tanks. All tanks are for breeding guppies and shrimp except for a 5 foot which keeps Goldfish. Cheers from Australia and keep up the great information much appreciated PS: 1st time post cheers
Thanks for your reply. Think I will stick with multiple sponge filters in my larger tanks as my canister filters create too much flow for the babies imo. Cheers
Hi, thank you for this helpful video. My question is about those pre filter sponges. In one of your previous videos where you showed someone else’s fish room, you briefly focused on the use of a particular pre filter sponge. This sponge could be taken out of the aquarium for cleaning and would not release detritus or gunk as it was being pulled away. You see, normally I would need to place a small freezer bag around my pre-filter sponge before taking it out so as to prevent stuff from seeping out. Other people use plastic cups etc. However, the guy you showed in your video claimed he could take his sponge out and nothing would seep back into the water column. Could you tell me which type of sponge was this? Was it the coarse variety or the fine variety? I’ll be grateful if you could let me know when you get the chance. Cheers. Tolga
Aquarium Co-Op - Thank you for your quick reply. It would have been great if someone could come up with such a pre- filter. At the moment, the only thing that comes anywhere close is an external pre filter module. Thanks again..
I'd love to put two of those giant sponge filters in my 30 gallon. I'd have the cleanest tank in the universe. Seriously that's got to be some sort of prop- no way that would fit in an aquarium. Where can I buy them? LOL

My bro went with a fluval canister and all that jazz for his 29 gallon.
I was like dude spoonge filters
Have you ever thought about putting a few of the monster sponges in the 800g? I'd love to see thousands of guppies in there!
Enjoying these Sunday live streams - you truly are the King of the Livestream! (think of the t-shirt possibilities with that!)
I think the question is: Does Dorkula want to have the sportscar??? (no question on the parking spot - she gets it!)
Finally someone mentions that high flow is not always good. Nice explanation on exactly how a sponge filter works.
You mentioned research papers! Yay!! Read people, READ!!

Never realized a fish hobby was so hard so it's not put fish in tank and that's thankyou for your videos
That sponge filter is outrageous. I kinda want one just to have it.
Those were my exact thoughts.
hey cory just wanna say thanks for all your advice on fliters plants and all that good stuff. i recently got stuff from you online sponge filters and a upgrade on my hang on filter. i appreceiate your time making these videos .
Great information as always! I learned some important advice. I am guilty of cramming sponge into my hang on back filter thinking I was hot rodding the filter. And yes the water flow is hindered. Thanks Cory.
I love my API Superclean 30. It's quiet as hell, and completely customizable.
Siamese Algae Eaters FTW! Love them, excellent at what they do, easy to keep, not too expensive. Awesome fish
The question on the aquaclear being slow helped me today!! Here I thought my filters getting older hence slower, but the tubes were clogged on my filters... THANK YOU CORY!!

Ok, I thought the thumbnail was a photo shop, but nope, you really do have a sponge filter that gigantic. So awesome! Lol.
i have a community tank full of loaches. a small colony of zebras, a larger colony of yoyos, and 6 dojo loaches. i give them PVC pipes. they love the little tunnels and they dont get scratched up. mine are white, but u could get a darker color if you didnt want them to stand out as much.
i've never had a problem with them eating floating water sprite. they love to lay on it like a hammock. they'll still dig it up if you plant it so its better to float it.
That aquarium is amazingly beautiful!

Lol I was thinkin my phone was messed up! I was like what the heck is going on!!! 😂 Cant wait for sump to be working & video on it!

Sometimes it needs a break.
I know this is a bit late, but with the brown algae. I had the same issue and unfortunately my fix was RODI water. Where you get this sponge filter so big size WOW
in my GF's HoB filter I have put in two sponges, and extra carbon to help keep it cleaner.

Corrie I use the round sponge to prevent the fish don’t go stok by the suction filter

It only drops out for about 2 minutes then its back on for the rest.
My car cost £150 and has done 5,000 miles in the last six weeks 😂 analogy works though - another great episode.

HOLY CRAP, that sponge filter is huge, is that for real🤔
I'm curious if you could use that giant sponge filter in one of those natural planted pools people are doing 🤔
Probably would do the job
Hi what should I do if the stem of my fern plant is through the sponge filter? How I can prevent my plant going through my sponge filter?
did you change lighting? haven't been watching as much lately, but this is the first video I noticed this. Looks very good prolly the best "look" to a video in this room yet.
Lighting is the same.
I love the goofy analogies! Ha! Good talk!
Those eheim prefilters are OK but I found that the sponge is too fine and would clog up after 2or3 day's but my tanks was a little heavy stocked
Nicely done , very informative :-)
Love the vids.. Don't ever stop lol
Hi from Perth WA

Dragon fish is used for a few different fish. But it doesn't sound very compatible with the mix you have.
DAMN THAT SPONGE FILTER!!! I THOUGHT IT WAS PHOTOSHOPPED WTF
Gotcha! No photoshop here :P
You could biologically filter a pond with that sponge filter....lol..

What about cleaning filters?
Gpm÷ gallons in tank how often does the tank fully cycle commenly x1 inch fish per gallon
Base of what the tank can not exceed just thinking out loud
I have a small hang on back took out carbon added the 100 % polyester fill. I also have a sponge filter that I use with a no clog filter. What I need to know is. When I do my water change do I need to throw away the polyester or just clean it in the aquarium water and put it back in the filter.
Poly fill is pretty difficult to clean. I typically replace it when. It becomes clogged.
i have 1x Eheim classic 600, 1x eheim subfilter 600, 1x spongefilter runned by eheim air pump 400, 1x eheim skim 350, 1x eheim mini up are this to much for my 50 gal tank?
where can I get the large filter sponges you use please I am in the Uk really enjoy your interesting videos so very informative really appreciate you spending soooooo much time
ok I'm gonna be breeding blue shrimp and guppies I have a 20 gallon a 10 gallon and a 5 gallon for this purpose right now hypothetically, if I use a hang on the back filter, what size filter should I use for that many fish in a 20 gallon?
I’m partial to Seachem Matrix for bio-media. It’s worked very well for me the last 5 years in several tanks and I’ve just stuck with it. MarinePure is supposed to be the bees knees but it’s pricey and complete overkill for most setups.
Ok I found the link but the sponge filters that’s displayed is not the really big one I see in ya video
We don't sell the big one in this video. It was brought back from China purely for display purposes.
Aquarium Co-Op oh ok ,I wud really love to have two of those
Hey Corey I'm watching TWO years later despite the audio issues! (BTW, Canisters are out ($$), air pumps are out (noise), and multiple HOBs are out (back of tank rim is occupied by light clamps)....what's the better choice between the two I have??
can you use a under gravel with hookup to aqauclear 110 ?
I have 30+ mystery snails, a dwarf gourami and about 6 dwarf cordydora in a 29 gallon with a large sponge filter and a rated 70 gallon HOB aquaclear. Does anyone think im over/under filtering?
Double sponge filter with suction cups or a single normal sponge filter which is better
I want to go swimming in that tank
Hi Cory Love watching your vids. Interested to know your thoughts on sponge vs matten filters. Have always bought canister filters in the past but since watching your earlier vids I have combined sponge filters as well and seeing I now have 8 aquariums ranging from 2 feet to 6 feet I am looking to convert to Matten filtration which I believe is just a giant sponge filter. My main concern is I don't thing I will have enough circulation in my larger tanks. All tanks are for breeding guppies and shrimp except for a 5 foot which keeps Goldfish.
Cheers from Australia and keep up the great information much appreciated
PS: 1st time post cheers
Matten filters are decent for breeding tanks. But they come with their own set of problems like any other type of filtration.
Thanks for your reply. Think I will stick with multiple sponge filters in my larger tanks as my canister filters create too much flow for the babies imo. Cheers
Hi, Can you comment on Undergravel Filters with plants.
Cheers.
Tolga
No sponge filter can be romoved without releasing gunk back into the water without using a bag or container.

LOL
What about deep sand bed? They say it's houses anaerobic bacteria.
What about it? Anything that is devoid of oxygen would typically house anaerobic bacteria.
where did you buy the giant filter?
