  • Aquarium plants are a vital aspect of creating a thriving aquatic ecosystem. Whether you have a no CO2 planted tank or a low-tech planted tank, these plants offer numerous benefits. The deep substrate system plays a crucial role in sustaining their growth and overall health.
    Aquarium plants not only add natural beauty to your tank but also provide essential oxygen for your fish and other aquatic inhabitants. In a no CO2 planted tank, you can enjoy a lush and visually appealing setup without adding fertilizer either. The deep substrate provides an excellent source of CO2 and fertilizer. Low-tech planted tanks are perfect for beginners, requiring minimal maintenance while still supporting a diverse range of plant species.
    The deep substrate system fosters root growth and nutrient absorption, ensuring your aquarium plants flourish. Creating a balanced ecosystem with thriving aquarium plants contributes to the overall well-being of your aquatic environment, making it a fascinating and rewarding experience for every aquarium enthusiast.

      @@BarityOne as of today it is thriving. before i had to gravel vac once a week im never gravel vacuuming again. got the sand substrate over the gravel and its going great! so i always had plants in my tank believe it or not i had them in small pots of gravel on top of the gravel substrate now i have them all planted directly into my new substrate. its wonderful. i just couldnt mentally break the chains of the way i always done the hobby since like the age of 12 until i binge watched father fish videos during work. the way he broke down how nature at the end of the day is the best really put things into perspective for me of things i always knew to be true but couldnt implement.
      sorry for the rant but yes the 2 inches of black sand ontop of my old layer of 1 inch of black gravel in a planted tank looks beautiful. my betta and his tank mates are in heaven. i recently added leaves from a local river bed into my tank 2 days ago or so as well.

    I really like this channel, I am very lazy so having an aquarium that takes care of itself is perfect. I barely have to touch mine and its great! Not only that but my aquarium looks 20X better than most others, I got into the hobby through the plants since I loved terrariums, turns out an aquarium is just a very wet terrarium if you set it up right. The great thing is that many of these aquarium plants are great in terrariums when grown out of the water.

    I've never known plants grow like it outside of a CO2 injection system, stems and crypts have been growing at about an inch per day (so much so that I can cut them once per week and spread them around the tank, we went from 5 crypts to 18 in three weeks) , amazon swords have been putting out pups within 3 weeks of being in a brand new tank. My hairgrass hit 4 inches within 2 weeks and is spreading like mad and even pearling. Everything is growing like a weed! If this was common practice 12 years ago i don't think I would have stopped.

I was debating whether I should add a liquid fertilizer or not after seeing one of your videos in which you discussed not planting too deep to force the plants to grow their roots to reach the nutrients. Although I didn't know about your supplement package I did do some additives such as finely pulverized egg shells and compost. About an inch and a half of soil, an inch and a half of sand capped with another inch and a half of natural stream gravel. Methinks I'll hold off using a fertilizer.

    Dear Father Fish I have a question. I have a small 5 gallon of which the largest inhabitants are shrimp, there are no fish in it but a huge variety of critters. It is completely covered in plants. Now I have the following problem. Over time my PH always seems to keep on rising until it starts to affect the life in the tank. Recently all the snails have died and I measured the PH at 9.5 in the late afternoon. My tapwater is around 8 but I mix it 50/50 with reverse osmosis water. It used to be stable at around a ph of 7.3 to 7.5. With some googling, my hypothesis is that the ph rises due to co2 depletion. Do you have any suggestions on what I can best do now to remedy the issue?

    • @FatherFish
      @FatherFish  9 місяців тому +1

      Yes. Start building a food web./ The leaves will force the Ph down and reduce buffers. The problem is increase in buffers.

    Hello @Fatherfish
    What if I want to lower my pH? I keep (German) Discus and I have extremely high pH 7,5-8 (hardwater). With CO2 I lower the pH to 6.8 and the plants seem to like that and the Discus lay eggs at about 6.8 pH as well. I only know how to lower it with CO2 (and keep it steady because of a pH sensor that supplies more or less CO2)
    As soon as the CO2 supply stops, it slowly goes back to about 7.5 and swordplants / hydrocotyle / vallisneria dont seem the like it as much as near neutral pH.
    The tank is more than 1 year old with about 1.5-2 inches of natural mulch plant fertilizer, capped off with about 2 inches of white inert sand
