      hey i boght a 5 gallon tank with 2 plants just bought 3 glowfish tetras for the tank waiting a couple weeks before i add a shrimp and snail bc water isnt acclamated enough for them yet. Nitrogen cycle too early. Anyways my 3 fish are healthy and doing well but the lady that said these three were good for a 5 gallon tank are nipping each other. Particlarly the blue one is nipping the other 2. She said the space was fine and 5 gallon was plenty of space. She also said they are schooling fish and are peacful. They do not seem to school at all only if startled and one is being aggressive. What's up with that?

    Thank you Cory so much for answering my question at 23:32 Trying to look for API's E.M. Erythromycin here, no luck so far, it seems I will have to find out if it's even legal to import here. For now I rinsed my tank and cleaned it completely (not including filters) and also started to use API's Aquarium Salt on the tank to treat it for some white spots on my balloon mollies.... I hope it works! Again Thank you a lot!!!

    Cory,
    Whilst many may have at some time in their lives (no matter how brief) experienced some degree of fish keeping, there are some of us who persist and then consider ourselves to be avid hobbyist. Then of course in some cases (like in my case), it is more of an addiction lol - a healthy one at that!
    I have kept at one time up to 9 aquariums, mainly focusing on Tanganyika Cichlids, always keeping that special planted aquascape ‘attempting’ but never quite achieving(or even close to)the Takashi Amano look(RIP).
    Then, there are those who by virtue of their circumstances are simply fortunate enough and able to develop the hobby in dedicated, well designed fish rooms with all sorts of innovative setups and multitude of species. Lucky sods lol.
    But for me, I simply salute those who not only are able to host dedicated fish rooms but progress this into a business. Whilst, some may argue that fish keeping is a Science interlocked with Art, I think that one needs to add to that that a true hobbyist in most cases will have an instinctive nurturing tendency. I can see how you look after your fish and care for them, even if it is also your business. Not many of you around, I must say.
    You my friend are a very fortunate person. Able to enjoy your hobby whilst also making it your business - If only I could do the same.
    A hello from the Rock of Gibraltar on the other side of the pond - I enjoy your videos, keep up the good work mate.

    Thank god for this video. I am new to the guppies and have stratum in all my tanks minus the one ten gallon with regular gravel and I noticed my guppies were not doing well at all I believe from the lower ph. So I just did a fish swap out of the tens. Put my betta in the one with stratum and my guppies in the harder water tank (regular gravel) and three hours later my guppies were looking waaaay better and my beta is so much happier! Thanks for this video so much info I didn’t know.

    My male bettas do better in a tank with female guppies, less color aggression. But Most of my bettas were raised with guppy fry from fry. Guppy fry were younger as they grow faster. Then again, I do have several male bettas that do well in a community tank with male guppies. If the young male gets mean, I put in breeder box at night, release during the day, and do this for a while until he accepts his tank mates, or I move him. So far, almost all my bettas have accepted a community tank with guppies.

    hi cory! I hope you can make a 101 vid on guppies. I get confused with the terms "guppy", "fancy guppy", "endler" (are they the same?).
    I tried to look for it on google but I find some criterias but noting specific... how do you deferinciate between a cobra guppy and a snake skin?, I saw them and they to me have like the same leopard skin pattern.
    Do panda guppies have to be whiye on top/black on the bottom or could it be the other way around?
    Those are the kinda questions I've had and can't get enough info on them to buy strains ergo breed them and preserve pure genetic lineage... since I do know they dont discriminate and breed no matter the color or tail shape.
    thanks for your time cheers!

    • @iSaraSeantae
      @iSaraSeantae 7 років тому +4

      Guppy is a blanket term, like dog - just as there are different breeds of dogs that all remain essentially the same thing, there are different varieties of guppies that are really still the same fish. Endlers are a similar livebearing fish but they are not the same, sort of like a fox to a dog.

    • @AquariumCoop
      @AquariumCoop  7 років тому +5

      I feel like some of this information could be in a video but a lot of it is pretty intricate. Knowing what a good panda guppy vs a bad one is in the eye of the beholder etc. Depends on who is judging etc. Getting emmersed in the culture is the best way to start.

    Greetings! I have seen various UA-cam videos with folks talking/showing off their fish. I've noticed that some folks use sand to line the bottom of the tank while others use gravel. And I have seen a few with nothing more than wood sculptures to make the tank "inviting". What do you recommend, in general, to line the bottom of a tank with? How often do you change it out/clean it?

    • @AquariumCoop
      @AquariumCoop  7 років тому +2

      I think it's personal preference. I like substrate, and I use a gravel vacuum when needed to clean it.

    How much flow does a group of guppies need? I'm planning my first proper tank with something more than goldfish in and i want to ensure i have planned everything properly so i have a good idea of how i can achieve what i want from my tank. Could i pair a betta with a group of guppies or would i be better of keeping a group of neon or cardinal tetras? I want a planted tank so I want something that won't ruin all my plants and that feeds well so any suggestions for pairings would be greatly appreciated :)

    • @AquariumCoop
      @AquariumCoop  7 років тому +1

      gentle flow is what they would like and a pair of bettas with the guppies would be pretty difficult. Cardinal tetras etc like you mentioned would be much easier.

  • @ashleybenson8688
    @ashleybenson8688 5 років тому +1

    In most pet stores they label Fancy guppies as care level easy, but would you consider guppies easy? I don't always, I find it hard to keep certain strains alive. blue/green Moscow for instance do very well for me, as well as hb yellow, and albinos. black Moscow for some reason I just can't keep alive. I bought 5 males recently to give it another try and lost 2 out of 5. 🙄

  • @jody1828
    @jody1828 7 років тому +3

    To answer the question about bettas and guppies together, let me share my experience. I had one male betta who I intentionally put guppies with which ended up breeding. That betta did not seem to even notice the guppies were there. He didn't bother or eat anyone from the smallest fry to the adults. Sadly he passed. So I got another betta a while later and put him into the same tank as the old one, with all of the guppies and fry thinking that, based on my prior experience, everything would be ok. He immediately began hunting the fry and eating them like candy. I moved the guppies, grew them out and rehomed them. Many months later I helped rescue some guppies, put them in the tank with the same betta thinking as adults they would be ok, but NOPE. He literally swallowed a male right up to the base of it's tail. So the answer I think, is that it really depends on the disposition of the betta. Of course you won't know unless you put him with guppies, but have a back up plan if it doesn't go very well.

  • @MonicaWilliams-f6m
    @MonicaWilliams-f6m 11 місяців тому

    I bought several show guppies from Thialand. One came pregnant, but I am unsure of what strain this particular one is throwing. Most are red mosaics and purple mosaics. My best guess is a panda or tuxedo, but I am unsure. They are darker black/navey blue with roundish tail, blue/purple body, white belly, most have dark ventrals. I'd upload a picture, but I don't see that option.

    off topic, i apologize, but if i rescue 2 common goldfish who have lived in a tank at room temperature for 6yrs and i put them in an outside pond, would they adapt to staying in just-above-freezing water for the winter or should i heat it to about 14-16c to make sure they get through? plus theyre quite stunted, small and sickly looking, can that lead to complications during the winter if i let the temperature drop? a heater to keep the 14c would cost me around 400€, thats why im asking.

      @everythingexoticsanna910 7 років тому +1

      Randy Hightower fry are cheaper but if you are wanting to breed and you want older guppies juveniles are the way to go.

    • @hightde13
      @hightde13 7 років тому +1

      Having them breed would be great but isn't the be all end goal at the moment. Mostly just having them grow up at all would leve me happy. I guess in the end I'm deciding on a group of sexable juveniles so I know I have the correct male female ratio but get fewer guppies, or take a chance on fry but have more just in case I loose a few. The tank I have set up is planted and has been going for several months now with snails and recently added shrimp. Everything seems stable and ready for fish but I'm fairly new to the hobby so not totally confident in the outcome.
      Thank you for the comment. It will definitely help in making the decision!

    Frustrated: fish keep dying.
    3 Gallon Marineland Contour Glass Aquarium Kit with Rail Light
    Heater that maintains 77 degrees approx
    1 Anubias nana
    1 Amano shrimp
    1 Nerite snail
    3 Guppies
    Fish fed once a day as much as they can eat in 1-2 minutes
    20-30 % water change weekly
    Water tests consistent:
    Ammonia at 0-.5 ppm
    Nitrate at 20-40 ppm
    Total Hardness at 300 ppm
    Chlorine at 0
    Total Alkalinity at 180-300 ppm
    PH at 7.8-8.4
    Not sure what is wrong. I know my tank is small. I do not have room for a larger tank. I used to have only two guppies with the shrimp and snail, but one kept dying. I would replace and one would die again. Found out that with only two males, one ends up bullying the other, so I got three... down to two now because one died.
    Thought it could be the nitrates, but they are never that high.
    Would appreciate your input. Thanks!

      I purchased the guppies from the local pet store. Not sure how old they were. The first one died after around 6 months. The second one died after 1-2 months. Then the last three died after only a few weeks. I am guessing that there wasn't anything that was obviously wrong in my original post? Do you have any suggestions of other types of fish that would work in my small tank with its conditions?... fish with a longer life span? Thanks so much for your time.

The goldfish do quite well and have grown to about 6 inches and even eat out of my hand. I keep the pond shaded as much as I can to help control algae and temperature. I also keep the goldfish in the pond all winter.

    Is it ok if I keep only male guppies in the tank and females in another ? They breed a lot and I dont have enough room for them so I need a way to stop them breeding. Males are chasing each others but not too much.

    My female guppy just gave birth and I was not expecting it. My question is the tanks where I have them is heavily planted can the fry survive and if they do what should I feed them or dry food is ok?

      They can survive with lots of hiding places, crushed flake works well. They grow to adults in about 6 months.

    Is it possible for a female guppy to be dropping one baby at a time throughout the month and it being eaten? My female has a dark gravid spot, then over night it seems to disappear and she looks smaller, then the spot comes back for a few days and it happens again. I don't see any babies in the tank, but I figured IF she's dropping babies, maybe the other fish are just eating it.

    • @AquariumCoop
      @AquariumCoop  6 років тому

      I suppose it's possible, but that's not how they typically would give birth.

    • @CherokeeMaiden81

      I'm not sure if she was pregnant before I bought her. Petsmart has their guppies separated, but who knows what the breeder did before then. They've been together since the 4th and the male is very....erm...eager? lol
