I had a midwife and it was amazing, as everything on my “birth preferences” list she already supported and encouraged, and were routine in her practice anyway. Examples: intermittent fetal monitoring ad opposed to continuous, active and upright labor, upright pushing & delivery as opposed to lithotomy position, water immersion during labor (and also delivery), my water to break on its own as opposed to artificial rupture, minimal cervical checks during labor, dimmed lighting, aromatherapy, birth affirmations on the wall, delayed cord clamping & cutting - preferably until after placenta was delivered, immediate and extended skin to skin, no bath or even wiping down of baby to take off vernix, placenta encapsulation, etc. This list is not too much to ask for, but so many people I know have had to ask permission and from their doctors and nurses to do certain things and fight for what they want, and have even been scoffed at for expressing preferences. I loved that I was not looked down upon for preferring a more physiological birth experience rather than a highly medicalized one, but rather applauded and 100% supported 😊
Nicole Andromidas I’m glad it was helpful ❤️ It’s so empowering going into the birth of your child with knowledge, the ability to make informed decisions, and feeling like you have a voice 💪 I recommend reading book Babies Are Not Pizzas. It’s pretty eye opening and will leave you feeling empowered to be your own advocate during the process. The author is the founder of Evidence Based Birth, which is another wonderful and informative source for all things birth! 😊
1. Your energy and personality is amazing 2. This was a HUGE help. I am only 17 and a half weeks with my first and had absolutely no idea what a birth plan even was so this was great
Hmmm 🤔 my preference would be to have you as my nurse/midwife haha your amazing ❤ im 39 weeks today and super excited to meet my little man 😍 just wanted to say a big thank you for all your tips and tricks and for always having such a positive energetic vibe. The world needs more people like you x
Anxiety about the possibility of not having any control over labor is a huge part of what has kept me from having a child, so this video is hugely helpful. I know I can't have full control, but my biggest anxiety is doctors and nurses doing things without permission, me being pushed around, no one listening to my preferences, etc. So it does make me feel better to know that I can lay this information out and have it to refer people back to.
Don't be anxious! I'm currently expecting my first baby, and truth be told, I was in your shoes. Not having control is the one thing that freaks me out about the whole process, but I took a childbirth class (Bradley Method) and it's given me tools to help cope with pretty much any outcome but mostly a focus on natural childbirth, which is what I'm inclining toward. There are actually many aspects of your birth you can control, and knowing that gave me peace of mind. You just really need the right tools and information so you know exactly what is happening and can make an informed decision that will leave you feeling empowered REGARDLESS of what kind of birth you're going to have. There are also many different childbirth classes out there. Feel free to find the right one for you. I recently read an article where a couple actually took said course pre-pregnancy and it helped them get into the mindset to have a baby and later got pregnant. You could always try doing something like that and see how you feel about the process.
I have a very hostile attitude towards hospitals and doctors and all things hospitals. Sounds, lighting, smells, literally everything. The esthetic of hospital rooms. Hospitals are for sick and hurt people and that’s always been my mentality. I’ve always seen birth as something so beautiful and spiritual. And trust me I get it complications are very real thing. I just have a hard time accepting that fully? I know I’m so hard headed. Idk what to do I dreamt of a homebirth but I’m low income I don’t have money for that. I’m grateful I have Medicaid and have not paid a single penny for any prenatal appointments. I’m praying taht I can go in the hospital relaxed and trusting, and I pray I get really sweet nurses that will respect my birthing preferences within reasonable means
Yes there are a lot of goodies in the cord blood so it’s also good to point out delayed cord clamping so that baby can get all those good benefits instead.
Wow! SO, I NEVER wanted to give birth, always planned on adopting because of several sexual traumas...Life happens, now, not only I am TTC as an older woman 43, which many are against, but I'm actually considering a non epidural vaginal birth after reading about how much healthier baby is! I just thought I would have to constantly manage anxiety or triggers, because surprise vaginal pain IS a trigger for me! I never thought I could put it in a Birth Plan about my trauma and have some control over being covered, male nurses, etc... Thank you SO much!!!
Thank you! I'm due with my 1st any day now and this gives me a lot more confidence. I'll definitely be making a birthing plan now. This is a good quality video. 🙂
I have 3 videos I’d love to see, 1) moms who are plus size/ overweight 2) moms going into labor who have cptsd/ptsd from previous trauma, 3) mamas giving birth with pcos
Thank you so much for your videos Sarah! You literally address ALL the questions in such a detailed manner and again...with humour! You are so caring and encouraging! I wish all the nurses were like you! ❤
I really pray my care team has as much care and passion as you. I totally plan to do this but I am also nervous that they will be not receptive of it... How can I advocate for myself/husband nicely asking to use these preferences for awareness? .. welp you answered my question about 14:25 started with my doctor "flex and flow possiblity..." Lol "kinda where my head is at"
Interview doctors first! And watch the staff hun cause my butt would get up and leave if I wasn’t being heard at all, I’ve seen a lot of people go in and have police called on them because they weren’t listening to the nurses and what they wanted
This was so helpful, thank you! I suffer from panic attacks, and doctors/hospitals always trigger my anxiety. I will definitely be adding this to my sheet! God, I just learned about AFE the other day, and I'm traumatized/terrified now. All I pray for is a healthy and safe birth with pain management.
Alicia Luoma praying for your labor! In my birth I really learned how Birth Education was a must to help with eliminating fear, especially the fear of the unknown.

Sitting here with my pen and paper writing this all down lol! 31 weeks tomorrow can't wait to meet my baby. This will be my second vbac and I want to try without an epidural this time!! Thank you so much for your videos they've really been helpful to me to prepare myself for the birth of my baby. Thanks so much Sara!!!!:)
@@zehranehar7892 Find a supportive provider, first of all. I didn't have a doula but that would probably be a great idea! I'm going to have one this time. And trust your body that's one the biggest things you can do. With my csection I got induced three times and was pregnant almost 42 weeks I didn't dilate at all. With my vbac when the doctor checked me at my 40 week appointment and I wasn't dilated I immediately felt disappointed! I thought oh here we go again I'm never going to dilate and end up having to get another csection. Well my doctor wouldn't let me give up! He told me to have patience, we wanted to allow my body to go into labor on it's own and if it didn't he'd induce me at 41 weeks. Well at 40 weeks 2days I started having contractions 5 to 10 minutes apart! 2 days later I delivered my precious baby boy vaginally without being induced!! Trust your body! YOU CAN DO IT! I just have to say how grateful I am for your channel. I had my third in October and had been binging your videos for about four or five months before. My labor was completely different than my first two and had all the fun interventions (after two prior unmedicated/minimal intervention births). I kept reminding myself Flex and Flow, flex and flow. My hospital staff was amazing and because of all that had to happen, I was so glad I’d learned from you about how to ask questions. Thank you for sharing so much with us!
Wow!!!!!!!! I wish I saw this 6 years ago when my daughter was born!!!!! I had such a traumatizing experience... I didn't realize the nurse's perspective. I love your videos. Thank you ♥️🌹♥️🌹♥️🌹🌼
Hi Sarah! I love, love, love your education!! We’re planning on starting our family this year and I want to buy your course as soon as we (hopefully) get pregnant. 🤞🏻 Anyway, I would love to learn more about delivering the placenta. I feel like there’s a lot of information out there about pregnancy and birth but I don’t know what to expect when I comes to that part of the delivery experience! I videoed a friend’s second birth last fall, and after the baby was born the midwife pressed on the mom’s belly which apparently was to help the mom’s uterus contract and deliver the placenta? The mom was cringing and said it’s the worst part of labor so I’m just wondering if that’s normal or if there are other options? Do you have a video about this already or could you potentially make one? 😃
I made a birth plan and I had like I wanted to be able to walk, shower, move about, listen to music ex... and when I got to the hospital and asked my husband to give my birth plan to the nurse she cringed and said " ugh can you just tell me and not give me the paper" I looked at her puzzled and she said that it was like a curse to have a birth plan and told another nurse walking by the door not to come in my room bc I brought a birth plan. First time laboring in 2019 first time everything and I felt like I had no support and my sweet husband had no clue what to do with that or even when I was laboring and they kicked my mom out of my room bc my blood pressure was high. It was horrible thinking for the next one of getting someone like you to help
My husband and I will be TTC baby #1 starting in July. I love watching your videos in anticipation and preparation. I'm a major planner and I always need the reminder to be flexible. You are great! Keep doing what you're doing.
Thank you so much for all of these videos! I’m a third time mom, 39 weeks pregnant currently. I have learned so much through your videos over this last trimester and I wish I had found your videos sooner! Working on our rough birth preference sheet tonight. Thank you for the guidelines, as I’ve never had one before! ❤
Mamas remember it is your birth and your body and you can refuse ANYTHING. Make sure your OB/midwife has this by 32 weeks to ensure that they will follow your preferences. Then give another to the nurse at the hospital. I told the nurses over and over that I didn’t want pain meds with my first and was laughed at and mocked and pushed for an epidural.
I’m 35 weeks now! So glad I watched this video I learned a lot specially to prepare my birth preferences. I don’t really know what to expect. Thanks for this very informative video. Keep up the good work Sarah.. 🥰😍
I love your personality. Very personable. One thing I would suggest would be to slow down with the list. I did have to keep rewinding to catch everything. But no big deal just a little suggestion 😊
Thank you so much for this video! I'm due May 29th with my first baby. And there are so many preferences for birth that I hadn't even thought about yet. Especially considering most birthing classes near me are on hold with the coronavirus going on.
Thank you for your advice and videos Sarah! Your nephew is so cute🥰and your sister is beautiful! FTM here due June 25, 2021and very nervous...😨 Quick question: How should I submit my birth preferences to my doctor and nurses before labor?
My birth plan I have had for 3 of my 4 births were pictures with small sayings under them. Every doctor/nurse loved it. I didnt find the template until my 2nd baby.
I had everything respected up to after baby was born! Everything happens so fast and they kind of do things very fast while you are in a love bubble and don’t really care what’s going on.
Hi Sarah, I want video about placenta encapsulation, please. Im interested how it works in your country? Do you have specific laws about that? How it goes for women who are giving birth at hospital?
@@sarahlavonne def won’t have any good luck in that category I live in a very very small town and the health care system could not be worse here … it’s very disturbing that The nurses and doctors will tell anyone and everyone all of your information and medical history, share what medicine your on and beyond… I personally know all of this because I am a color specialist at a salon below the hospital and here everyone talking about the entire town. It is absolutely horrible.. I am scared to beyond words to have to go to this hospital
I would love a video on the effects of birth control on your fertility later in life. I’m seeing more and more women struggle with infertility and although I don’t want children for a few years I’m worried that my HBC use now will affect my future fertility.
Yessss! I really wish I would have known that it can take a bit for your cycles to come back or regulate. I went off the pill at the beginning of October(2019) and didn't have a period until Thanksgiving. I had 3 periods between October and now, and it's really stressful to be trying when you have no idea when you're fertile. Ovulation strips helped identify, but it was really emotionally taxing.
YESSSS, I’d love to know the risks and benefits of the multiple options for bc after having my first child. I DO want to have more children, just not right now. But being that I’m already 25 and so many women are having infertility issues younger and younger, I’d like to take the safest route.
Postive story: I started hormonal birth control at 11years old to help regulate my cycle. I stayed on birth control until just passed my 24th birthday (September is when I came off). I had my period within the week. My first cycle was a nightmare, every symptom in the book, it was wild. I was used to hardly any symptoms! The next cycle I was pregnant. I used the app clue to roughly track my cycle as I am very forgetful and previously relied on the pills for that. I am 31 weeks tomorrow with a baby boy 😁
Yes I would like to see this as well as women developing intense anxiety from it im almost certain that is what happened to me as my anxiety came out of nowhere in my early 20s and never got better
I have a question about feeding new baby. We had a traumatic birth experience first time around and have decided that we will formula feed this time around. I'm not opposed to expressing colostrum in the weeks before birth and had a great supply last time. How much colostrum would I need to express for the first 24 hours? Nutritionally is it worth it to freeze and defrost then feed to baby? Would that kill off the antibodies?
I’m actually allergic to the medication that goes into the epidural so is that something I would need to specify as a reason for not wanting it I’m also allergic to some other pain medications as well I realize it would be in my records but would it also be helpful to add into my birth plan just so there is no confusion or would that be less helpful because it’s already in my medical history
I’m so glad I didn’t have an exact birth plan with my first. The most important things to me were no c section and no epidural. I went into labor at 34 weeks so I needed IV antibiotics 4 hours apart. While waiting all I felt like doing in laying in bed. I thought I wanted all the natural pain management positions and shower. I thought I wanted just my husband and I ended up with my parents there also most of the time. If I would have had my mind set idk how happy I would have been with the experience.
Hi I’m 32 weeks with my first baby and I’m having a boy. My baby is in a cephalic position and Idk what to put on my birth plan I haven’t even thought about this till someone mentioned it to me
In europe tgey dont give enemas. Peeing/defecating by acciident during pushing is natural!! They have gloves; they will whipe it andwash and reglove up!
Can you give your birth plan to your dr. before truly selecting a dr. I don't want to have exposed myself to a bunch of drs. before finding one that my birth plan will work with?
Hello Sarah! Something completely is not planned, but could happen is that the hospitals where I live might be so overwhelmed by the corona virus and I might be forced to give birth at home (not only because of the number of patients, but they don't protect the doctors enough, so that many of them need to be quarantined and potentially some departments need to be shut down)!!! It's f...ing scary!! Can you say something about home birth and what to do if there's no midwife present, or maybe have to call emergency afterwards to cut the cord, or what if we can't even reach the emergency?!! What to do if there is some complication like cord around baby's neck, etc, just things to be careful if a home birth should happen. Many thanks!!
With my first born, I told my doctor I wanted to discuss my birth plan with her. She said she doesn't deal with birth plans and it will go how it goes ... I didn't even. Get skin to skin :(
If a birth plan is important to you and a doctor won't even acknowledge it, you could think about switching doctors. I've heard of people switching at 8 o 9 months. It's hard but if you are feeling unsatisfied it may be an option to consider.
Ok when you talk about newborn preferences the first things you mention are a vitamin k shot and a urethra vice? I looked it up for a newborn and it's not telling me anything can anyone help me? Also what is the jelly that they put on babies eyes?
Is requesting female care takers only realistic? I know there is a chance that if my doctor can not deliver my son that another doctor from her practice will do it. That does not bother me, but I don’t want a male nurse if my hospital has them. Also would putting that no one hold my son expect his father and I during the first hours he’s born be okay? My hospital is big about skin to skin for an hour, but i’m not sure when they do that. I want to do that before my baby is passed around
It's a low-dose epidural, just to take the edge off rather than numb you out. You typically can't actually walk (even if just for safety reasons), but you may be more able to move yourself in the bed, you can follow your contractions better, it wears off more quickly
I’m so glad I found you! I’m on baby number 3 but both times I’ve been in L&D I felt so weird to ask for things. My mentality was Docs and Nurses know best so I should just let them handle this. So long story short some things happened that I wasn’t completely comfortable with. I feel better knowing that nurses do want to hear my wants. Do you have any suggestions about prayer? As in having a quick prayer before we start the pushing and after baby is out??? Thanks in advance!
It might be really difficult if you're in transition and the urge to push is kicking in, to stop and pray. However, doing a prayer after is definitely doable.
Thank you for this video! I'm planning to have a doula for laboring at home as long as possible then go to hospital when baby is coming. I only live a mile from the hospital so in no rush to get there if not an emergency. I agree to keep it to one page simple, to the point highlighting your most important concerns. Do you recommend to have it just typed out or bullet format? What are your thoughts on the layout of your birth preferences?
Unfortunately I had to give my baby formula right away as she wouldn't latch she was 37 weeks and couldn't keep her blood sugar up so the fact that I couldn't do it the first hour they forced me to use formula which I think was the right thing but it did affect my supply and I couldn't do more than 3 months of breastfeeding it was never exclusive 😕

First time laboring in 2019 first time everything and I felt like I had no support and my sweet husband had no clue what to do with that or even when I was laboring and they kicked my mom out of my room bc my blood pressure was high. It was horrible thinking for the next one of getting someone like you to help
Oh my goodness this is so upsetting. I’m so sorry she disrespected you like that. You can always change nurses in the future! 🤍🤍🤍
Yes on the placenta video!
I need this! lol Due in about a month and unsure what to do
My husband and I will be TTC baby #1 starting in July. I love watching your videos in anticipation and preparation. I'm a major planner and I always need the reminder to be flexible.
You are great! Keep doing what you're doing.
Janell Martiny major planner too! 👋🏻 such a great idea to do before a huge event like birth!
Very informative thank you!
Please discuss high blood pressure and preeclampsia after 35weeks of pregnancy what to expect what to do about managing it ?
I would love info about placental encapsulation
Mama dr Jones has a video on the subject, look it up. ☺️
Me too! I'll check out mama Dr. Jones, but I'd love Sarah's point of view. I love the way she explains things 🧡
Great video ☺️ thank you so much. I'm glad I found you.
Love your videos! Realistic expectations and “flex and flow” are so essential when learning about laboring and birth plans! ❤️
I would love a placenta encapsulation video!
You have an amazing energy, thank you for this helpful tips 😊
I want a video on the placenta. Is eating it or consuming it in someway really beneficial, what effects does it have, etc.
Thank you so much!! I'm four weeks from my due date and needed this help! I'm a first timer and I feel like I'm might miss an important note.
How did it go? I'm 5 weeks out and im also a first timer
Just from your energy I want you to be my nurse for real 😭😭😭 but thanks for the great information!!!
I didn’t even know where to start or what I could actually ask for for my first birth. Thank you so much for this information!
Much better video than the other popular one I saw. This is more straight to the point and gives great information. Awesome job. Thanks!
Amazing video! We’re due with our first any day now and I’m so grateful you posted this. Thank you!
Alicia Marstall congrats and best wishes on your upcoming birth!!
Yay!!! It’s finally here. Excited about this one!
I love your channel Sarah. It was a great resource for me when I was pregnant. New sub here.
I’m binging your videos... just wanted to say I love your makeup. So pretty. Love your vibe.
My birth plan I have had for 3 of my 4 births were pictures with small sayings under them. Every doctor/nurse loved it. I didnt find the template until my 2nd baby.
Can you please share it with me??
I'll try to find the original link that I used.
Yuh I found this to initially ! Thank you though!
Thank you! I found on google typing “Visual Birth Plan”
I had everything respected up to after baby was born! Everything happens so fast and they kind of do things very fast while you are in a love bubble and don’t really care what’s going on.
Hi Sarah! Can you do a video on pros and cons of water births?
Such a helpful video!! Thank you!
Are you allowed to control who is in the room medical staff, visitors, support team and where they are allowed to be in the room?
To save y'all time, she starts at 4:42
Writing my plan up today!!😁😁😁😁 37 weeks on Thursday!!
Hi Sarah,
I want video about placenta encapsulation, please. Im interested how it works in your country? Do you have specific laws about that? How it goes for women who are giving birth at hospital?
I love your videos!!!!! I am pregnant with my 3rd baby and your videos are so educating I'm not to worried about it!
Can you cover controlled cord traction, please? Your videos are very helpful and I am due in two weeks.
So helpful ❤THANKYOU so much !!! Wouldn’t we all love if she was in our labor room!!!
Hopefully you get a taste with one of the nurses I’ve trained! ♥️♥️♥️
I’m so glad I found your channel! You have been so helpful ❤️ I’m due with my baby girl in November
This was so helpful thank you so much 😊
I have a question about feeding new baby.
Emma Biles I think As a nutritionist I think it would be so worth it!
This video was so helpful!
This was so incredibly helpful! Thank you so much! ❤
You should totally think about selling the Birth Preferences Plan separately! It's hard to find a good template out there!
It actually is for sale! It comes with my hospital packing list 😘😘😘
@@sarahlavonne omg! You are literally UH-MAZING! Just purchased- thank you sooo much!!! 😍❤
Sorry but where can I buy the birth plan?? I definitely need one .
@@sarahlavonne Hi! Is there a link where I can purchase ypur Birth Preferences Plan? :) Thank youuuuu
www.bundlebirth.com/product-page/hospital-essentials-birth-preferences-packing-list
I love this but idk how to fit this all onto one page!!
So flipping helpful!! I absolutely love your videos!!
Hi! Loved this video. I am 12 weeks and I’m wondering when is the right time to start actually making and presenting my preference list to my midwife?
Make it whenever! And bring around 35-37 weeks! 💖💖💖
Sarah Lavonne Thank you!
I had what I felt was a really reasonable birth plan. Then none of that happened 😂 but I feel really positive about it anyways
Great vid as always!
Soooo helpful 🙏🏾
I love your vlogs❤️ I wish there wud have been some1 at the time when I delivered my son in 2014. I watch all you videos. Your so cute Ma'am
Hi I’m 32 weeks with my first baby and I’m having a boy. My baby is in a cephalic position and Idk what to put on my birth plan I haven’t even thought about this till someone mentioned it to me
i have found you very useful
Wish all nurses were as nice and accommodating as you
I love this! I’m a first time mom who’s really nervous. This helped me so much. PS: You kind of sound like Mika Kunis! I love it hahaha
I would love a video on encapsulation please!
Can you use enema when you are in labor so I would not have accidents during delivery?
In europe tgey dont give enemas. Peeing/defecating by acciident during pushing is natural!! They have gloves; they will whipe it andwash and reglove up!
Can you give your birth plan to your dr. before truly selecting a dr. I don't want to have exposed myself to a bunch of drs. before finding one that my birth plan will work with?
I love your videos!!! Do I have to get an iv when I go into the hospital?
Queen Lewis I believe so or at least just the hep lock..had this question too.
Yeah just incase something happens
Does your hospital essentials pack have all these points laid out pretty simply?
Shellfish's revenge shes discusses her views on home births in past videos :)
With my first born, I told my doctor I wanted to discuss my birth plan with her. She said she doesn't deal with birth plans and it will go how it goes ... I didn't even. Get skin to skin :(
I’m sorry that you had that experience that should have never happened
If a birth plan is important to you and a doctor won't even acknowledge it, you could think about switching doctors. I've heard of people switching at 8 o 9 months. It's hard but if you are feeling unsatisfied it may be an option to consider.
So sorry... i would have had ran to another ob!!!
My birth plan/preferences will basically be moving to your city so you can be my labor nurse. 😂
Ok when you talk about newborn preferences the first things you mention are a vitamin k shot and a urethra vice? I looked it up for a newborn and it's not telling me anything can anyone help me? Also what is the jelly that they put on babies eyes?
Vitamin k for bleeding/clots. Eye stuff is to help prevent infection
My doctor says I need to be induced at 40 weeks and I want baby to come naturally is she allowed to do this?
Is requesting female care takers only realistic? I know there is a chance that if my doctor can not deliver my son that another doctor from her practice will do it. That does not bother me, but I don’t want a male nurse if my hospital has them.
Also would putting that no one hold my son expect his father and I during the first hours he’s born be okay? My hospital is big about skin to skin for an hour, but i’m not sure when they do that. I want to do that before my baby is passed around
What is a walking epidural? It's been brought up before im curious
Brittany Sanchez I believe it is a pain killing shot given through your IV. Doesn’t last as long as epidural but instantly starts working.
It's a low-dose epidural, just to take the edge off rather than numb you out. You typically can't actually walk (even if just for safety reasons), but you may be more able to move yourself in the bed, you can follow your contractions better, it wears off more quickly
Whear can i find a willing participant?
I wish I had the money to buy some of these classes :(
My birth plan is two pages and have headings for pregnancies. I included CoVid 19 into it.
When do you give them your birth plan?
Thank you for this video! I'm planning to have a doula for laboring at home as long as possible then go to hospital when baby is coming. I only live a mile from the hospital so in no rush to get there if not an emergency. I agree to keep it to one page simple, to the point highlighting your most important concerns. Do you recommend to have it just typed out or bullet format? What are your thoughts on the layout of your birth preferences?
Do you think it’s unreasonable to request a female only staff?
can i have the one page birth plan please ?
Unfortunately I had to give my baby formula right away as she wouldn't latch she was 37 weeks and couldn't keep her blood sugar up so the fact that I couldn't do it the first hour they forced me to use formula which I think was the right thing but it did affect my supply and I couldn't do more than 3 months of breastfeeding it was never exclusive 😕
Dont be so hard on yourself.. you did what you could. Your baby/child turned ok?
@@NikkieRoxxx I know thank you for your kind words. She did ,she's now 4 years old and beautiful. It was just hard for me at that time because I wanted so badly to have been able to EBF but about two years I had my little boy and he did EBF for 1 year. Both are wonderful and I'm so grateful to God for blessing me with a family. When I wrote this I was a new mom and have grown so much since. Thank you for checking on me. God bless you xxx
