Although Steamworld Quest isn't a roguelike, it's the game that got me into this genre. I've put 100s of hours into slay the spire and Monster train is catching up. I've enjoyed a lot on this list. I need to return to griftlands sometime and can't wait to grab inscryption when I get through a little bit of my backlog.
I like Monster Train and Slay the Spire, but I am totally hooked on Dicey Dungeons! It's just so much fun and so varied. I hope there will be more updates or a sequel. I keep coming back to this game.
Slay the Spire was a slow but steady burn for me. I definitely struggled to build a long-lasting deck at first, but the mechanics really started to click after 5-6 hours of progressively more successful runs. The amount of drama on my first successful "finish" was insane. Single digits worth of HP was the difference between me vanquishing the final boss, and having to start the entire run over 😅
Great to see Nowhere Prophet on the list. Slay the Spire and Monster Train are #1 and 2 for me but Nowhere Prophet is definitely in there at #3. It's very tough but some great mechanics. I'd never heard of City Wars so will check that out next!
Im glad one step from eden made this list, I've had the game for about a year now and i still find it very fun, addicting, and challenging. I definitely highly recommend this game to play.
I know it's not a rogue like, or even a dedicated deck builder, but I do like the deck building elements in other games too, like Ooblets. You can even consider Pokemon as "decks" in a way. I just really like that kind of strategic gameplay, even if it's sometimes lighter.
I've put hundreds of hours into slay the spire on multiple consoles (mostly switch), but I played monster train for roughly four hours. I "beat the game" or got a credit roll on my first playthrough, and never went back because of a perceived lack of challenge. I will jump back in based on your passion.
I haven't played Monster Train yet, but you probably are starting from a point of expertise in the genre thanks to your Slay the Spire experience. I had a similar experience with Dicey Dungeons. I've probably put in about 10 hours and haven't lost a run yet. I have over 1200 hours in Slay the Spire on Switch. I'm up to Ascension 1 on Steam and haven't lost a run on that platform yet, but I still regularly lose runs at Ascension 20 on Switch of course. That said, I have heard that Monster Train is easier overall than Slay the Spire. But I'm sure there's still plenty of challenge at higher difficulties.
There's a few on this list that will probably change your views. These games are seriously addicting when they click with you. And there's enough variety that it's very likely one or two will really click for you.
DungeonTop is a favourite of mine, occasionally bugs out though. Wish there was some sort of expansion or side game that focused on like a story or randomized labyrinth.
roguebook rules. the map is genius on it and such good fun. i cant believe it only made number 10, especially as the other nine look so bad compared to roguebook. slay the spire looks sooooo terrible i cant bring myself to get it. im just hoping there is another roguebook. faeria also amazing.
I guess nor deckbuilders, neither roguelikes are not my genres, I just feel too much randomness in a game where go back right to the start if you fail. However, Roguebook looks beautiful.
How many of these are actual deck builders. This loose definition that has been adopted makes it super difficult to find actual deck builders. Deck builders have the mechanic of modifying your deck during play session, for example (and certainly not limited to) Dominion. If you are modifying your deck before and after, it isn't a deck builder. You just have a standard tcg/ccg/lcg. Edit: None of these are deck builders. :/ What a waste of time.
Ever since the days of “Magic the Gathering” back in the 90’s I’ve been intimidated by Deck Builders. The closest I ever came to one in 30 years was “Gwent” during the Witcher game. Just recently however I picked up “Inscription”. This decision based off of both the great reviews (not least of all SwitchCorner) and the “if you’re intimidated by deck builders, this is a great starting point” compliment many reviewers gave. It is now at the top of my queue and I genuinely excited to play it.
Just buy Dicey Dungeons!! It's like £1 on sale. Slay the spire is also fantastic and i would wholly recommend. Haven't played any of the other games but it looks like I need to pickup Monster Train tho
It's my absolute favourite. Like many, Slay the Spire got me into the genre, (If you don't count the old MTG game, forget what it's called,) but Monster Train is exactly what I love about the genre.
Slay the spire is amazing. Nowhere prophet a hidden gem. Like yours and SwitchUps Christmas videos, you edge it for me because it’s slightly less mainstream (in my opinion) focused. 🎉
I still like the gameplay of DungeonTop which is also regularly super cheap but it does lack any sort of story. I don’t feel I have explored this genre enough. Griftlands and Inscryption look compelling to me.
Interesting list, with lots of great games. As a huge fan of the genre, I would have put Roguebook quite a bit higher (probably fourth for a general audience, although it's third for me after StS and Dicey Dungeons). Monster Train is enjoyable and quite popular for a reason - it just doesn't click with me as much as the others I mentioned (though it would still be fourth on my list, as I do enjoy it from time to time). I feel like too many people slept on Roguebook at launch, since it really didn't get much attention. Hopefully more people will give it a try, as it really does do something different with the genre and offers countless potential combos/strategies thanks to playing with multiple characters at once whose cards interact in various ways, plus variations in how you upgrade both the characters and your cards that are different from what I've seen in other card-baed roguelikes. It's one of those "easy to learn, super fun to master" type of games. Great stuff overall.
You just need to keep playing and trying new things. Eventually you start to discover synergies and begin to understand what makes you successful. It also really helps to learn the enemies and to know what to expect. Just takes time. If you want to take a bit of a shortcut you could watch runs by other players and learn from them. But a lot of the fun comes from learning on your own so I would encourage you to just stick with it.
What did you miss? Good ones: Banners Of Ruin. Dungeon Top. Neoverse. Monster Slayers. Not sure: For The Warp. Castle Morihisa. Deck Of Ashes. Neurodeck. Rise Of Slime. A long Way Down.
Honestly Monster Train is a masterpiece, StS is right there too, just something about Monster Train that when I am in the mood for a relaxing, great deckbuilder, MT always gets the pick now a days. I HOPE they expand on what they've done, be it a whole new title/direction or just MT2.. I keep my eye on pretty much every rogue deckbuilder, sadly none have come close to the quality.
Nice video, but it's the end of the year which means it's almost time for one of the rare Nintendo first-party eShop sales. These other games will have to wait.
Alex, thank you for this. I finally figured out this is one of my favorite genres and thought I knew about all of switch’s deck builders. Adding several of these to my wishlist!
I love Slay the Spire and have been playing the crap out of Monster Train. Glad to see they took the top 2 spots. One I’ve been investing a lot of time in is Pirates Outlaws. Pretty similar to Slay The Spire, but it’s a good time.
Listen game gods we players want magic the gathering on our switches and don't charge us for the cards just make the game 60 bucks and it always updates with the new sets of all cards and I do mean all the sets and cards a truly promised and devoted forever updates and devoted servers for online play and updates forever we would actually pay a small amount each time a new set is released like 20 bucks for the new entire set all the cards and we could all play online together forever.
I'd say 2 of my favorites are guild of dungeoneering and deck of ashes. Really great games. But I've just started playing floppy knights which is pretty good too
Wish these games had better aesthetics. Slay the spire has an ascension-like charm to the primitivism of it’s art, but all these other games just seem full of visually unappealing modern corporate art…
I started playing STS a month ago and it's really great, wouldn't have thought that it would take that much of my time. Think it's one of my most played games on switch already. Dicey Dungeons is also nice. Thanks for this list, I might try a few of the others
My favourite Genre by a country mile totally agree with the list. When I seen Slay The Spire at number two I was like ‘get in’! Monster Train is top of the list. Dicey Dungeons is also a must imo. The only one missing for me was Castle Morihisa that would definitely be in my top 5!
Interesting I've not seen many people recommend Castle Morihisa. It looks just like a STS clone. (I mean more so than others) However I'm glad your recommending it. I may have to check it out.
I’ve never been much of a deck builder gamer, I played Lost in Random recently and had a lot of fun, it’s not necessarily just deck building but it has this element, and that got me more interested in the genre. I wanna play Dicey Dungeons next.
There's definitely a ton of them. Guild of dungeoneering is a underlooked one and is pretty fun and challenging. Monster slayers is pretty good also. The fifth game looks pretty good I'll have to see when it gets on sale again.
I have all of these except Iris and the Giant (which I am going to rectify now thanks to you) I watch the eshop like a hawk so that's impressive that you found one that I had never heard of, so thankyou so much!

Great list! Many of my favorites of the genre are here.
Some of my favorites that are not on the list are Banners of Ruin, DungeonTop, and Neoverse.
Good call
Those are great games! Banners of Ruin has great character design
Neoverse looks janky but can be a lot of fun!
I know it's not a rogue like, or even a dedicated deck builder, but I do like the deck building elements in other games too, like Ooblets. You can even consider Pokemon as "decks" in a way. I just really like that kind of strategic gameplay, even if it's sometimes lighter.
Pokemans? Bruh.....

It has 25 covenant difficulties
So yes, it has challenge alright.
Meanwhile it took me 40 hours just get off the 2nd floor of Slay The Spire lol 😆

Never heard of City Wars: Tokyo... after seeing your segment I went to look for it and it's actually on Sale! Thanks for the recommendation.
Not particularly my favorite genre but, at least, now I know what's out there. Thanks for sharing.
There's a few on this list that will probably change your views. These games are seriously addicting when they click with you. And there's enough variety that it's very likely one or two will really click for you.
My switch have no deckbuilding games at all. I plan to get into this genre at some point though. Thanks for the recommendations 😊
DungeonTop is a favourite of mine, occasionally bugs out though. Wish there was some sort of expansion or side game that focused on like a story or randomized labyrinth.
No love for neoverse ? I loved that game played it a lot while it was on gamepass
He features it in deals videos sometimes and it's one he does recommend. Just didn't make his top 10.
A genera that i fell in love thanks to slay the spire and yu gi oh,thanks for the variety.
Does Banners of Ruin fit this genre? I've heard maybe the switch port was not very good?
It does. And it is a good port
Never played Rogue like Card games but they Seem pretty cool if you really Like them
Want to get addicted to a game : Play RUFF GHANOR
Slay the spire is so great, but it's been months since I last played it because if I do I know I wouldn't be able to stop playing it .
roguebook rules. the map is genius on it and such good fun. i cant believe it only made number 10, especially as the other nine look so bad compared to roguebook. slay the spire looks sooooo terrible i cant bring myself to get it. im just hoping there is another roguebook. faeria also amazing.
I expected Slay the Spire to be top pick, so to my surprise it wasn't! Inscrytion looks like my kind of game.
Slay the spire is the obvious stand out on this list but don't sleep on griftlands. Excellent deck builder with tons of charm
I guess nor deckbuilders, neither roguelikes are not my genres, I just feel too much randomness in a game where go back right to the start if you fail. However, Roguebook looks beautiful.
Totally wanting to get Inscrtyption one day.
you should show the gameplay more not trailers because they dont show the phisical game sometimes just for couple seconds…
Playing Rougebook as i watch this
What's the card game for complete beginners?
Snap
SteamWorld Quest would be a good place to start. Though not a rouge-lite.

slay the spire just hits different.. really fun and addictive game
I only wish we could have gotten the 4th playable character on Switch 😮💨
The Watcher? Is definitely in the Switch version.
Such an incredible game. I was playing it 3 min before watching this video.
My favorite genre, especially for handheld.
Agreed
@@datsunmedia91
we have 4 characters for switch. 🤓💃🏿
One of my favourite genres! Mark

Not a roguelike but the card collecting and the quests in witcher 3 is real fun too, its what made me keep playing.
I love that Griftlands artstyle. Never played a rougulike deckbuilder but that seems like a fun one to start with
Just buy Dicey Dungeons!! It's like £1 on sale. Slay the spire is also fantastic and i would wholly recommend.
Haven't played any of the other games but it looks like I need to pickup Monster Train tho
Great to see Monster Train getting some love, totally an underappreciated game of this format and deserving of more praise.
It's my absolute favourite. Like many, Slay the Spire got me into the genre, (If you don't count the old MTG game, forget what it's called,) but Monster Train is exactly what I love about the genre.
I finished Monster Train three times in less than 30 heures. Got me hooked real quick.
Would like to finish the Last Divinity DLC though
Slay the spire is amazing. Nowhere prophet a hidden gem. Like yours and SwitchUps Christmas videos, you edge it for me because it’s slightly less mainstream (in my opinion) focused. 🎉
Thanks Daniel! Got a lot more to come the next few days, I have like 6 deals videos as well lol but the sales still not live in the US
Agreed, Alex and the SwitchUp guys are the absolute best!
If monster train had android with fast swipe they'd have a chance to beat out Slay the Spire. Agree with your top 2.
For me Inscryption looks interesting. I don't play deckbuilder games but I saw Inscryption so many times that I want to try it.
I have several in my backlog but am more addicted to solitairica for mobile right now.
Roguebook does NOT play well on my switch, it's very slow and porting errors everywhere. It's cool but super laggy
ive been playng it a ton but it does crash and lags like crazy
I still like the gameplay of DungeonTop which is also regularly super cheap but it does lack any sort of story. I don’t feel I have explored this genre enough. Griftlands and Inscryption look compelling to me.
Slay the spire was my top game for the year again as well as my played for 3 years.
Definitely one of the best games in the past couple of years

I have been looking forward to this video ever since you mentioned making it! Very nice overview!
Slay the spire is Michael Jordan of deckbuilders
I am sooooo bad at these games. I have monster train and I have put like 5 hours into it and I suck hahaha. Never know what meshes any tips?!

@@TCG_Opening_DE but he may have forgot. Everyone forgets Banners of ruin and Dungeontop
I really enjoy Monster Slayers. Different classes with differing cards, boss fights, skill trees. Such a fun game.
Eden is so dope, need to pick it up the bigger grid is a smidge intimidating though
never seen/heard of city wars. It looks super interesting. Kinda sad Banners of Ruin didn't make the cut, but the rest of the list is great
Honestly Monster Train is a masterpiece, StS is right there too, just something about Monster Train that when I am in the mood for a relaxing, great deckbuilder, MT always gets the pick now a days. Really love Monster Train. I finished it three times. Have to beat the Last Divinity though
Omg I didnt know monster train made it to the switch! Im getting NOW! Thank for that info and great list!
Lol 😂 Well tbh it was released to little fanfare and very few channels covered it, which was a shame.
Slay the Spire was my first experience and it's really hard to put it down. And I bought it with your gift cart Alex, so thanks a lot!!
Its a slightly cheatin to put Slay the Spire in the list which called "Games like Slay the Spire", dont you think ? )
I love Slay the Spire and have been playing the crap out of Monster Train. Glad to see they took the top 2 spots. One I’ve been investing a lot of time in is Pirates Outlaws. Pretty similar to Slay The Spire, but it’s a good time.

Everyone should own slay the spire.
I've tried some other deck builders like dicee dungeon, but they just don't hook me like slay the spire
have slay the spire and roguebook, spire is king, roguebook is close behind. Interested in on step from eden, may check that out
I'd say 2 of my favorites are guild of dungeoneering and deck of ashes. Really great games. But I've just started playing floppy knights which is pretty good too
Good to know that someone likes Deck Of Ashes out there. 👍😆
Wish these games had better aesthetics. Slay the spire has an ascension-like charm to the primitivism of it’s art, but all these other games just seem full of visually unappealing modern corporate art…
Didn't watch the full video yet. But I'm sure monster train and slay the spire is top 2 I bet.
I prefer Roguebook and Monster Slayers over Slay the Spire and Monster Train.

Deck building, not my genre, just here to snag that OLED baby‼️
Great video! Monster train is also number 1 for me, and I think you should check Banners of Ruin.
Monster Train is probably the best one besides Slay the Spire, but I do find it much easier to beat.
Great list! Seems like half are on my wishlist and half I'm hearing about for the first time!
What an oddly specific genre. I'm surprised that there are so many games in it!
I think monster train is my favorite new one that I played this year.
strange slang.
for example at the start. he says his name is alyx.
My favorite is Slay the Spire. I've only just tried 2 on the list though lol Slay the Spire and Dicey Dungeons.
Same here. I'm so satisfied with Slay the Spire though that it's hard to give other ones a chance.
Here for the switch oled giveaway!
I have all of these except Iris and the Giant (which I am going to rectify now thanks to you) I watch the eshop like a hawk so that's impressive that you found one that I had never heard of, so thankyou so much!
I was looking at RogueBook...
Super Bullet Break is fun too
Not my genre at all, but you might want to check out Deep Sky Derelicts. SciFi deckbuilding…in spaaaaace.
I really enjoyed Dicey Dungeon. The art style is so fun!
Agreed! I had way more fun than I should have with this game.
Never been able to get into deck builders. Played the Witcher Throne breaker a bit, but just haven't had that drive to complete
I need to give Slay the Spire a chance. I've been thinking about buying it multiple times, but you might convinced me finally :)
This was a genre I never would have considered until I saw some of your reviews and now I own a few I love dicey dungeons! Amazing American circus is great too just because it’s so different
I love Slay The Spire. That's what got me into deck building games.
Not may genre Alex but I’ll take that OLED of your hands x

Which game?
Nintendo is so criptic, at least Metroid Prime Remaster is real and we can enjoy it on our switch 😄
Slay the spire was a banging good game. As a person who is not into deck building I was really addicted.
Monster train is legit
None for me today…
Great #1 pick. I also keep coming back for all of the permutations.
Wow-that’s strong praise for monster train! I will be checking it out
