- Dog food for diabetic dogs is hard to come by and those that seem appropriate may be very costly and end up spiking your dogs blood glucose levels.
So after scouring the internet and finding food that I needed for Nyx to ensure he stayed healthy and were in the low band on the glycemic index I have created a few lovely homemade recipes using a slow cooker so it is very little effort.
This is the first of many recipes and I will share them all with you :)
Recipe:
1/2 cup red lentils
1/2 cup brown rice
Sweet potatoes
Carrots
Apples
Lamb lung
Garlic (2 cloves)

I have a huge problem using any rice, been or lintel, they all contain carbs. They are low on the index assuming your dog is active. Most senior pets don't have enough activity to burn off the carbs. Fresh green, yellow and red vegetables, lean meat, fish, bird some pork, eggs things the dog would find on the wild. Cooked or fresh prepared with love and care
Yes my 12 year old is still very much active we swim multiple times a week and he is walked every day at least 40 mins
There is no reason to stop activity with your older dog as it can cause more problems with muscle wastage which leads to other issues. Best to keep them moving and keep them strong
No apples, sweet potato or carrots, all high glycemic index
But surely rice, lentils etc are very high in carbs - not good for diabetes ... ? I give my dog meat, poultry, courgettes and quinoa
You are able to give your pet a small snack during the day, otherwise their super level plummets. I give my dog a few tablespoons of the homemade food.
Awesome!!! Great job!!
The sweet potatoes and apples have sugar don't they?
Dogs dont actually need any carbs.....
Wow!!!! ❤❤❤
Good for u ☺️
How many times a day does he eat this and how much does he eat
2x a day
8:30 am and 7:30 pm
He has about 200-220grams
I have a smaller dog - 8.2 kg. Would this work for him? How long will this food keep.
My dogs BG is running real high like in the 700's...ive been using Ucal homecooking..i dont feed him per instructions cuz it alit of food for a 20 lb dog ..but he still runs real high..im scared to feed apples, carrots, sweet potatoes any advice
Stay away from anything that has carbs or natural sugars in it (potatoes and apples etc) and where you can after meals get him out for exercise as this will bring his levels down naturally as he will use the food he eats in his exercise as opposed to the body trying to convert it.
Does he have insulin?
Also 700 seems like insanely high - my dog is considered high when he is in high 20’s?!? What are you testing him with??
@@FlawlessPaws I have Alpha trak 2 ...he takes 6 units of Humulin N 2x a day...I also test his pee ..I don't know why his BG is all over the place..this morning it was 673 and just now 322..ketones went down to 5 ...I take him for 2 -20 minutes walks everyday..I feed him lean 97 percent ground turkey 90 grams..47 grams of green beans..50 grams of brown rice with vitamin supplements and a spoon of pumpkin...same time everyday..we are coming up on 2 months since diagnosis..I feel like I'm doing everything I'm supposed to do I can't understand why he's still running high
The vet told me not to give them anything that’s sweet, so apples, sweet potatoes, and carrots. I’m afraid he does not want to eat those kibbles that the doctor prescribed so instead of gaining some kind of weight he’s losing a lot more because he will not eat.
In general vets are not well informed on Diabetes and what dogs can and can’t have. Diabetic dogs require a higher fibre amount. Apples are a great fibre source with some other amazing benefits with great nutritional content.
When cooked the sugars dissipate into the entire meal and many are cooked off so sugars are not something to be concerned about.
@@FlawlessPaws Vets know about as much health/nutrition as their big pharma overlords allow. Which is not much.
Yes, My dog does not eat those prescription nibbles. I guess you can omit rice. That's high in carbs. My dog is allergic to grain.
Can I get your diabetic dog food recipe written out so I can
Dogs aren't supposed to be fed any garlic or onions.
Garlic they can eat and many people have this mistake regarding garlic.
It is actually extremely beneficial for dogs and can also aid in flea repellent.
Onions absolutely not - never feed your dogs onions
Can I get a written out recipe for the diabetic dog food my hearing is bad and I cannot understand what you're saying
It is in the description❤
What meats did u put in there?
Lung or lites were the main protein source in this recipe. Raw fish was added as well.
Not only is it super cheap, it has low protein, low fat, low salts and sugars
You feed your dog all this at one meal?
No
The usual amount you feed your dog is taken from this
Our Vet tells us potatoes, including sweet potatoes are too high in starch for our diabetic dog????
Potatoes should be avoided
Sweet potatoes is a safe, healthy, and natural treat for dogs, offering a range of health benefits (and a sweet flavor they'll likely love). For example, sweet potatoes support a healthy digestive system thanks to their high dietary fiber content. They're also low in fat and contain essential vitamins like B6, C, and A. The vitamins support eye health which as a diabetic dog owner knows that cataracts are nearly a given once your dog is diagnosed, so every little helps.
Only one sweet potato is added to the recipe as they cannot have too much but with it spread over the entire meal it will be no problem
Hope that helps
Did u say…..lung???????
Yes!
Lung is a very low calorie and low glycemic protein type which is great for diabetic dogs.
Rather disgusting to deal with but my dogs eat all sorts so we are used to it all
Absolutely no rice, beans, grains or fruit of any kind for a diabetic dog !!!!
Dogs shouldn’t have garlic,
Ahh common mistake - they can! Just not in large quantities. It has actually been proven to help those with diabetes to keep glucose levels in check
YOU are wrong!
Sweet potatoes are not good for diabetic dogs
It has nutrients and low glycemic index.
