My Indonesian wife said it was preparations for a circumcision ceremony … the other guy said he had stayed in the house since he had kids. I am learning Bahasa so I like the small conversations with subtitles.
Yes, it is a cricumcision ceremony. I think for women in this case. I think they were aware that this may be a very sensitive topic for foreigners and, indeed, many Indonesians. Thus the negative vibe in the reception. The horses that the kids will ride on post sunat (circumcision) is pretty common across the archipelago, though I have only seen it for boys' circumcisions.

A tip for your Bahasa Wayne , as you are asking a lot , if you can look at something, you should use the word “boleh “ instead of bisa . Boleh means … may I ? Or am I allowed or do I have permission. Boleh saya lihat ? May I look ? Boleh saya masuk ? May I enter or go in . Boleh saya Duduk disini ? May I sit here They will answer with boleh , you may . 🙂
Hi Wayne, look out, stirred up a bit of controversy. I hope this won't start you editing these mishaps out, as it is in fact, a reality of life. Not everyone is friendly or nice. My take is you started a conversation, someone didn't like your face and insulted you. That would never happen in Oz. You did what was best and walked away, what else could you do? It would be good to know what was said though. If people want a rosy coloured look at everything then they should move on, there's plenty of other tubers doing that. I like your videos because I feel I am getting an honest look at the places you visit, the good, and not so good. Keep on keeping it real mate! 👍
I've come in for a lot of criticism as well as some rudeness, but this is what happened rightly or wrongly and is an honest account of my interactions.

Hi Wayne,hope you are feeling better today. I think it takes a lot of will power and determination to approach people regularly&given it is not part of Asian culture for them to approach strangers, yet they mostly adapt to expats. Of course there is judgement a lot of the time,moreso if solo,older&female. The Balinese are obviously more used to such interactions and it is a shame when people are not open to people trying to speak local language. In Rome I got lectured for my poor Italian, however in Sicily it was warmly embraced that I was trying at least. In Cuba I sort of wished I could not understand at all as sometimes ignorance is bliss¬ everywhere has warm or welcoming locals, however people are generally nicer outside of tourist hubs unless in culture where people are expected to be polite. I think the young expats have their own groups&most do not go out of their way to interact with locals outside of necessity. I really appreciate your ability to comverse with strangers&see why Bali is a great reset place as I understand how challenging it could be. I expect you are thinking of your next move by now&do look after yourself and be proud of your achievements as I am truly impressed. Stay well
Absolutely. I speak Indonesian and there is a big downside to it. Not all Indonesians are pleasant individuals. And if you let them know that you understand they have disrespected you it can escalate.
Another nice vlog Wayne. With the bad vibe situation, maybe they just didnt like westerners there. You get that anywhere. Interesting that you called the home made 3 wheeler bumblebee. Were you referring to Lavi and Ollies bike that they rode around the world? I followed them for the trip and had the pleasure of meeting them and riding with them for 12 days through Sri Lanka a few months back. They are currently in India. If you weren't referring to them, then most of what I have written will make no sense to you hahahaha. Cheers
Ha! No, I was referring to Transformers the film which had a character named Bumblebee. The ride through Sri Lanka sounds like a good twelve days.Thanks as always, Phil.

Bahasa means language. Therefore English is also bahasa. Its not like Tagalog which is the name of the dialect. By all means check to see if I am correct. Thanks everyone.
True. But plenty of Indonesians refer to Bahasa Indonesia as 'Bahasa' too. Saying Bahasa for Bahasa Indonesia is just shorthand and has become pretty conventional worldwide now.
@DYTIII true but its an adaptation for foreigners. It's not offensive but I'm a bit pedantic when it comes to respecting languages and culture. It's just another example of how adaptive, kind and understanding Indonesians can be.
@@DYTIII Thats incorrect. If you think about it Indonesia has hundreds of dialects so between themselves they never use just the word bahasa to describe Indonesian as that would be totally confusing to them. Lets say you want to learn a dialect like Batak, you will have to use the term bahasa Batak otherwise how would they understand? Its an adaptation for foreigners only because they understand the intent is Indonesian, commonly foreigners in Indo who use just the word bahasa are beginner language learners.
@@ian-f5f What part of what I said was incorrect? Plenty of Indonesians DO use Bahasa to refer to Bahasa Indonesia. And saying Bahasa to refer to Bahasa Indonesia has become conventional outside of Indonesia. Not the majority, but a sizeable amount of Westernised Indonesians do. Yes it's an been adopted from an adaptation for Westerners - so what? Yeah, Indonesians usually use the term when they're interacting with foreigners, like in Bali. And it's more common with Indonesians who have studied abroad. And it's also common in places like in Jaksel. Interestingly, something I have noticed is that often Indonesians when speaking English to one another will refer to Bahasa Indonesia as 'Bahasa' when speaking English, but not when they are speaking Indonesian. It's a bit of a 'Do as the Romans do' sort of phenomena.
Correct. Bahasa means language. I study bahasa indonesia every day. Saya belajar bahasa indonesia setiap hari. I'm 71 years old and living in Bali. Some people here are very fluent in English. Tapi banyak orang tidak berbicara bahasa inggris.
Been reading the comments. Sad to see that even in a generally friendly and supportive environment, there are some people who get in petty squabbles. Also happens in Lombok😉
It's tough trying to cultivate a positive and supportive environment. A lot of my time is taken by deleting comments and users but it doesn't seem to matter as there are always others to fill the void.
I think someone laughed at the girl because you asked her what Sunatan is, I was laughing too watching the video, Can you imagine a man asking the girl what circumcision is in a small village in Indonesia. A language barrier can definitely lead to misunderstandings. I think most Indonesians like foreigners.
You know its a bad day when the goats won't talk to you haha. Looks like you stumbled into a awkward position with the ceremony, after reading the comments I see why, no fault of your own but certainly a sensitive situation. Just a suggestion here from the peanut gallery, I really dig the conversations but maybe change it up sometimes and focus on some of the cultural aspects of Indo, I'd be really interested in learning about Gamelan, the different instruments used for it and so on. I remember the American woman on the Indo forum years back living there, she had 10-12 instruments and had people over to play. Just a friendly suggestion, I can see the comment section gets to be a nasty place.
Bit of a blunder on my part really, I think. i should have been more sensitive, less ignorant, as to what was going on. Learn and move on. It was a less than ideal day all round. Thanks, blue.
Selemat Malam, Wayne. When I was walking with the naked, Dani tribesmen who were wearing only their kotakas/penis gourds, I could hear them making very elicit comments about my body. I was laughing all the way on the hike. They joined in and off we went to look at their unbelievable gardens and pigs. Brush it off. They do but its not that hard. The ones who find it hard are those trying to abuse the system which it seems this guy was on his "investor kitas" which has been abused since Covid with many visa agencies forming non active companies to sell visas to foreigners - but now they make investors pledge to invest 10 billion per investor or the company cannot apply for Kitas...therefore putting a stop to such inactive fake companies. Going to affect many, but those many are abusing it anyway.
Getting a KITAS / KITAP is not that difficult if married and I am not aware of any changes in the rules for a long time. Retirement visas are a different story.
Actually it goes back to the days when the Dutch were in Indonesia.the Dutch men would marry Indonesian women just to buy up all the land so when Indonesia got its independence it changed the laws to stop foreign males buying up the country through marriage. That’s also why Indonesian women that move and live offshore are not suppose to own freehold land. The rules are easier for women marrying Indonesian men.

Yeah, they are definitely less friendly. That said, Balinese are pretty unique in their friendliness. A lot of ethnic groups are hospitable and polite, but Balinese go out of their way to put people at ease.
I think ..a better way to understand the difference is that Balinese are lets say more diplomatic with words but lombok people are direct..no filter.^^
It's not easy doing street photography. Or in your case, travel vlogs. Not everyone likes a camera poked in their face. I used to experience that in my press photography days back in Oz. Trying to engage locals and having their picture in the paper, many would baulk. You do a fantastic job engaging and getting people to open up, especially in their native language.
I got the feeling that Wayne was having a real tough day at it here. In the past I enjoyed the street photography of Bill Cunningham & of street interviews Andrew L. Urban. Recently though it's Wayne work that attracts my attention.

Don’t worry, in Bali most Balanise got very rude so lots of Tourists started to go to Lombok, looks like Lombok people r becoming too Rude and cocky. If they don’t watch out Tourists will go to different countries.
@ My 1st visit in life was 1985, since then we stared going to Bali, 1st incident we were in a hire car waiting for light to change this Balanise guy in his Temple Attire on a bike came from the side so hard dented our car door, guess what he got out of the car n kicked our door in 🤷♀️ then got really aggressive, we just drove off we were so scared. In our another visit one of our family member got bashed in the surf , we walked in the shop n we didn’t buy anything,just looked n they abused us n told us go back where u from.how many more do u want to know. Good for u, u r lucky u didn’t experienced anything bad, we did.They try to rob u every way they can, if that’s ok with u , good for u. So we stopped going to Bali some of our friends says go to Lombok, so we go there, but they too r becoming greedy now . I can see tourists going to stop going there too.
I've been living in Indo for 5 years, currently in Salatiga, Central Java. It's a nice little town. I love Bali and Lombok too. I play guitar / make music it's great to have a hobby like this 🎸
I’ve been to Lombok a couple of times predominantly Muslim as much as you won’t like it the people don’t like westerners I was stopped and the people demanded a donation for the new mosque won’t go back
Thanks for your video . Some people from Lombok are not very friendly. There are horror stories about shit that goes on there. Best to stay away from ceremonies and girls and police on the take. Just sayin
Just spent three weeks there. Never going back. Btw, I was told ten years ago a foreigner was kidnapped by local men and taken to the forest and tortured with a machete until he got them money. I know everyone wants to be ultra positive about everything now. But there is also something called reality.
I also wonder watching your videos if you get permission to film people. Just a quick "are you OK to be filmed". Some people seem a little withdrawn, maybe they don't want to be filmed...
Talking about language learning, in anther channel someone had posted that he was fluent in Indo (he used the term bahasa too) and that the word for foreigners in Indo was "orang bulan" e.g. moon people. It was obvious that he had continually mistaken the term "orang bule" which is the term for white people for orang bulan. In the interest of accuracy I corrected him politely and he then announced that was it, there was no other term for foreigners, I was lying and he promptly blocked me in a hissy fit. Of course "orang asing" is the term for foreigners Sometimes its like misheard lyrics, we think in our mind thats what it means for a period of time and it becomes embedded. Thats even happened to me in the english language, I have misunderstood words for decades sometimes until corrected. But some people amaze me sometimes, we can all learn something new, I may be good at speaking Indo but Im useless at understanding the mind of a woman, I can definitely use help there. I did have a go at Chinese but the 50,000 alphabet defeated me.

Lombok people are a little different to the Balinese, I think - maybe a bit rougher around the edges sometimes.
Yeah, they are definitely less friendly. That said, Balinese are pretty unique in their friendliness. A lot of ethnic groups are hospitable and polite, but Balinese go out of their way to put people at ease.
You are adventurous. But be careful. I follow you 2 channels. Be careful. I laugh sometimes. Peace.
I laugh at myself often as well. :)
Kuta Lombok is not what it used to be. Love your videos.
Thanks Lisa. It has changed in places I'm familiar with. Thanks for dropping by.
I'm always concerned for the animals. Was I just imagining it or was there a skinny goat lying on the sand near that family? Did you notice?
I've said it in other videos that the animal situation is the hardest part about being here.
@@fiascodagama1 yes, true. Maybe it will be a catalyst for you.
Hi Wayne, Lombok doesn't seem as friendly as Bali to me Thanks for the Video .....
I think ..a better way to understand the difference is that Balinese are lets say more diplomatic with words but lombok people are direct..no filter.^^
It's fair to say the Balinese definitely have a unique warmth to their nature. :)
I spend 6 months a year in kuta lombok, no locals are really your friend, the name of the game over there is rip of as much as you can from the bule
Thanks, Dave. Appreciate it.
I got the feeling that Wayne was having a real tough day at it here. In the past I enjoyed the street photography of Bill Cunningham & of street interviews Andrew L. Urban. Recently though it's Wayne work that attracts my attention.
@@blueyonder1233 Astute observation, blue. it was a tough day at the office. It's not a bad office though. :)
Getting nasty remarks comes with trade. Some folks are just like that.
Yes, unfortunately some people are like that.
7:00 35 Years traveling throughout Indo, and I have NEVER met a BULE that eventually gives up and goes elsewhere. Fed up with the Beurocracy, and the Never ending out of the pocket expenses…. The ones that make it, are very few and far between….
That's very good sir. I'm Elvis Willas channel 😊
I already like to subscribe this video😊
Hooee 50,,000 idr a kg for topnotch fish,, i was just at woollys 350,000 idr per kg pinky schnapper
Yeah, it's hard to make a comparison, I guess.
@fiascodagama1 haah how about ikan bills in rich crispy noodle n peanut sauce, I try to tell my lokal pal , it's white bait hihi 'bait' being the operative word! but it's ok
I will prefer Basa Ketah to ensure local variety.
Lombok !! Doesn’t seem too friendly,
I think as someone else may have mentioned people in Lombok perhaps aren't as exposed to tourists as much as Bali perhaps. Most people are fine.
👍
How the naming system works in "Bahasa🇮🇩"
England= Inggris
English = Bahasa Inggris
British = Orang Inggris
Scotland= Skotlandia
Scottish = Orang Skotlandia
Scots = Bahasa Skotlandia
But ,
United Kingdom (UK)= Britania Raya
😂😂😂

Aussie= Orang Australia

The fisherman said that he inherited the land. (Waris = inheritance)
Ah, thank you so much, Cheryl. Brilliant!
Don’t worry, in Bali most Balanise got very rude so lots of Tourists started to go to Lombok, looks like Lombok people r becoming too Rude and cocky. If they don’t watch out Tourists will go to different countries.
I've been going to Bali for forty years and I don't find them rude.
Hey, new subscriber. I hear you're a little handy with a guitar... Be nice to see a little bit of that 😊
Maybe next time i come across a guitar. Thanks for the sub.
Just sayin
if you know the history you understand why
Bit early Wayne.
Do you need a couple more coffees? :)
Just spent three weeks there. Never going back. Btw, I was told ten years ago a foreigner was kidnapped by local men and taken to the forest and tortured with a machete until he got them money. I know everyone wants to be ultra positive about everything now. But there is also something called reality.
Lombok has got a reputation for being a dodgy place at times.
@fiascodagama1 be careful there. There are guys there that don't know what planet they're on. It's not Bali.
Call me judgemental but some of these people appear a touch surly.
I also wonder watching your videos if you get permission to film people. Just a quick "are you OK to be filmed". Some people seem a little withdrawn, maybe they don't want to be filmed...
Yes, I ask permission. I need to pin this answer as it gets asked pretty regularly.
I went to Lombok at the end of the 90s and would NEVER go back. I did not like the Vibes there at all……
It's fair to say there are a few people who prefer other parts of Indonesia.
I remember being in lombock back in 90s and an Irish dude got kicked in the market for no reason we could see ,wierdos
There have been some stories over the years that aren't great.
🇺🇲👍
Run hahhahaha
Not married hahahhaa
Yeah, not married. :)
Sasak kuno masih banyak yang berkaki ayam, walaupun negara Konoha dah merdeka hampir 1abad
what does 'berkaki ayam' mean?
